Freni never vocally caricatured Cio-Cio San’s age when performing Madama Butterfly, something great sopranos like Scotto or Sass did to the point of obnoxiousness. The text already indicates her naïveté, the voice doesn’t need to, even with Puccini’s parentheticals.
I find the engineering of this masterpiece disappointing. Her voice, the emotion, the skill throughout is evident ...if you can hear it over the orchestra. Karajan handles this piece wonderfully...I'm sure it is not unawareness of Ms Freni on his part, but rather the way this was engineered to be recorded.
