I really appreciate that you told the socket and wrenches needed makes it a lot easier to take everything under the truck for us guys that don't have a lift! Also glad you did everything without editing it together so we have an idea how long it takes to pull the trans. Thanks so much for being detailed.
Man I wish I had found your video first. Would have made this transmission removal so much quicker. That was the best mechanic instructional video I've ever seen. Exactly how it should be done.
Having watched you work for less than an hour, I have liked and subscribed. I have a seal out in my 1998 GMC Jimmy transfer case, that I am going to start in on. Like the old truck or I would junk it. You just gave me all the information a man could ask for, just in the event the clutches were damaged and start to slip in the future. Good job showing all the steps. You make it look easy which shows skills. One thing that would be helpful is more light in the dark areas. Thanks for sharing!
I would like to thank you for making this video very helpful I was able to take off my transmission from my 95 2 door Tahoe following every step you did it was my first time taking out a transmission now I’m off to rebuild my own transmission hopefully it goes well god bless 🙏
Lt’s Transmission How To If I may ask where do I buy a rebuild kit for my transmission my 1st 2nd gear and reverse work fine any recommendations? Thanks
You can get them on eBay. You can search around and get a good price. I’m sure your 3rd and 4th clutches are burnt. Be sure to replace the reverse shell while you’re in there.
Awesome video. Any tips on lining it back up and getting it bolted back in? Some suggestions were using studs to line up the bolt holes on the bell housing.
It's always good to know what size tools are needed. For me the longest part is finding the tools that I have scattered about. Good tip is every tool needed put in a bucket or box away from all other tools so that the same tools be used for install. I have also found after many fights of breaking my 95 4x4 that the t case and cross member can be slid back with drive shaft still on it. Tranny will clear coming down. 2 wheel drive no.
Thanks again for sharing this. I have to take out the motor transmission and transfer case so it was great to see what I am going to be up against. Keep up the great videos.
Great Video! Can’t get any better!! Did you ever make the rebuild video? What do you do to the torque converter on your rebuilds of the transmissions? Thanks for the time.
I get rebuilt converters from my parts supplier. I don’t rebuild the converters myself. I have a rebuild video I don’t have it published right now. It’s hard to get my camera man to stand around that long or I would have a few of those

Man good video, getting ready to pull one out now! Is there anyway to check a transfer case when you have it out of the truck? Like put it in Low and the front shaft and back shaft turns. Then put it in High front shaft and back shaft turns. neutral nothing turns? I hope you show how to change out that baron on the transfer case too. GREAT VIDEO!!!!!!!!!!

First off, like your videos. Very informative. Second, I have a 2009 Chevy Colorado 4x4 V8. Looking to do an upgrade to it. Using Superior kit 4L60E-K-V, Corvette servo and billet 4th gear servo. Upgraded my trans cooler as well. That was first. What would a shop typically charge (ballpark) to install the kit and servos I mentioned? Thanks for your help.
If someone brought just the transmission to me I would just charge like a normal rebuild. Around 750-800. I put a corvette servo in everyone I build. I like to put a sonnax tcc regulator valve and a sonnax actuator feed limit valve in the valve body too. Also make sure you put a hardened reverse shell. And all new bushings. I like to get a sonnax wide bushing for the rear sun gear. They’re bad about wearing a spot on the front planet hub.
Heck yeah brotha . Thanks alot and keep rocking . Stay safe . Thanks for sharing. Im stuck on the bellhousin bolts on a 454 4l80e . But havnt tooken out transfercase and tranny . Didnt want to go that far . Just taking the engine out. But makes ut seem alot easier. Its on a 1999 k3500 . Thanks again . Too you and your pops
Thanks man. I’d say those bell housing bolts will be hard to reach without lowering the transmission. Anytime I put an engine in I usually pull the transmission. It’s a little more work but I’m a lot better a pulling transmissions than engine so I figure the more I get out of the way the easier it is for me to do the engine swap.
@@ltstransmissionhowto5158 worked out. I found it easy too get the motor mouts loose. Jack engine foward. Slide transer case under cross member. Then tranny fell enough to get the bellhousing bolts . Took tranny out. Engines free. Thanks brotha
@@ltstransmissionhowto5158 So I got it mostly back in. I've been struggling with getting the upper cooler line back in. Do you have any tricks to pop it in?
They’re tight. If all else fails, I will put a little pressure on the line with a pry bar and move the line around. It will usually hit the spot and fall into place
@@ltstransmissionhowto5158 I tried the pry bar. I couldn't get it. I replaced the inlet. Attempted for hours. My brother in law came over and had it in in less than 3 minutes. Good deal. Glad I could help. Those lines can be a pain. Sometimes it’s best to walk away for a little while. Usually when you come back they fall right in.
You can usually get it out without taking out the exhaust. After you unbolt the bell housing you can usually jack the transmission up a little and bring it up over the exhaust.
Nicholas Robinette I cant really say I’ve seen many of them. I’ve rebuilt a few of them but I’m sure they lasted a while before I built them. It should be a good transmission. If you have any questions while putting it in feel free to ask. I’ll help you out any way I can.

This should be pretty much the same. In 93 they swapped from 700 to 4L60. If it’s the 700 you will have to take the kick down cable loose. It will be close to where the plug in is on 4L60. As far as removing the transmission there’s not much difference.
Lt’s Transmission How To thank you for the reply. I subscribed to your channel, awesome content. I have one more question, I’m on a budget how do I know that the Torque converter and/or transfer case aren’t the ones that went bad? I’m afraid if they are bad then can ruin they new tranny I put it. Should I replace them all?
It’s probably not your converter. It’s more than likely your 3-4 clutches are burnt. And the rest of the transmission is just wore out. I would for sure put a new converter in it. All the dirty fluid in the transmission is in the converter. And is the transmission is wore out the converter probably is too. As far as the transfer case goes I would just drain the fluid. If chunks of metal come out it’s bad. If not, they don’t give that much trouble. If you are doing 4x4 burnouts or mud bogging everyday you might want to open it up. But just normal driving your transfer case should be good. I would change the front seal on the transfer case. It should have 4 bolts and a seal. Just take the bolts out pry that piece off and change the seal. Silicone it and bolt it back to the transfer case.
Lt’s Transmission How To Do would you happen to know any good websites or bookstores where I can buy a repair manual? That would be cool to learn by the book and well as this videos help a ton! Thanks 🙏

I(will) have 2 ventures and 2 century's, each with its own parts car. When replacing the Transmission, besides filter kit, drain pan w/plug and fluid, what would I need from the parts store? Loyal to my GM..Rebuild em till I DIE!!
Changing the filter and fluid is probably all I’d do. I would have them all scanned for codes. If any of them show a code 1870 max adapt long shift. They have enough wear on the clutches that they will start giving problems.
@@ltstransmissionhowto5158 I'm about to get my hands on a 300K 97' Tahoe. You think that codes popping up with my all points inspection? This is going to be a personal sale inspection & I'm the buyer... The seller is sayin' that the previous owner rebuilt the tranny 3 years ago and did HD mods to the solenoid that was causing the issue.
ivan for the transmission just check the fluid. Look at the color. But with that many miles I would check the front end. Idler arm, pitman arm, ball joints, tie rods.
Is that a 4l60 or 4l65 ? Is there any difference when pulling and install ? I have a 2003 GMC Yukon Denali xl 1500. Could I install a 4l80 ? Is there a big difference. I’ll donate if can help save me from putting her in the shop
The 03 will be just a little different, not much. The cross member is different. You will have to take the exhaust out. I’ll try to post a video on the early 2000’s. There is a big difference in the 4L80. There will be a lot of changes. Too many to mess with in my opinion.
Lt’s Transmission How To I just had a rebuilt trans put in last yr. since the mechanic didn’t have his certificate up to date so I lost the warranty from company I purchased the trans from.i spent $1900. $1300 for the trans. $600 to have installed. I ended up having to take my truck back even though I had the money to pay mechanic. He decided he was going to keep my truck. So I spent a whole day driving around trying to find my truck. He had went across state lines 23 miles from were he worked on it. And got quoted $2200 to have this one rebuilt and another $600 for rear main seal. I don’t want the headache again. I have the air tools and would really like to do this my self
You can do it..not that bad really just take your time and make sure you get everything disconnected before lowering it down. I did mine by myself with $100 harbor freight trans jack. If only it goes back in as easy as it came out!

I had one at the shop this week that would go into limp every once in a while. The only code it was showing was throttle position. I’m not real sure. I do know a throttle position sensor being bad will mess the shifting up. And can cause the transmission to fail.
I see. Well I did the transmission swap and I’m still not getting 3&4 th gears. And still have codes of circuits electrical on all solenoids and torque converter. Any clues what I am looking for to fix this?

Changing the filter and fluid is probably all I’d do. I would have them all scanned for codes. If any of them show a code 1870 max adapt long shift. They have enough wear on the clutches that they will start giving problems.

I'm about to get my hands on a 300K 97' Tahoe.
You think that codes popping up with my all points inspection?
This is going to be a personal sale inspection & I'm the buyer... The seller is sayin' that the previous owner rebuilt the tranny 3 years ago and did HD mods to the solenoid that was causing the issue.
The code 1870 usually comes up on the 4t65e. So not on the Tahoe.
@@ltstransmissionhowto5158 Very much Appreciated. Any other tips on the all points inspection that I should ask the mechanic to do?
ivan for the transmission just check the fluid. Look at the color. But with that many miles I would check the front end. Idler arm, pitman arm, ball joints, tie rods.
How many do you do a day?
Boss says “never enough”
Should the transmission be in parked or neutral when removing... or it doesn't matter?
It doesn’t matter
I need to change one today on my bosses truck and I have no clue how to do it I watch this 4 times already
Well if you have any questions that I can help you with let me know.
What fluid replace the transfer case do you know by chance ???
Depends on the year. The earlier ones was ATF. The later got into that synthetic stuff. What year you working with ?
I called autozone,Napa,Oreallys nothing but reference I need what duplicates 01 Chevy s10 4,3l transfarecase
Nice work
It’s probably just regular Dexron III. If it’s has the automatic 4x4 i believe you use the auto trak II.
Lt’s Transmission tnx that’s what though that was my second choice!!! Keep up the good work.!
Great vid. Can you do one with install
Yeah man. I’ll make a video this week
Ok, man, I’ll make a video as soon as I get an early 2000’s in. I usually do a lot of them so should be in then next week or so.
Very Good Video! Im about to pull mine .
You can do it..not that bad really just take your time and make sure you get everything disconnected before lowering it down. I did mine by myself with $100 harbor freight trans jack. If only it goes back in as easy as it came out!

Do u just pull the shifter cable off?
Yeah it pops right off
GREAT details but lighting is a nightmare.. just like the ol 4l60e
Were can I find the installation video
I messed up the video and didn’t get it uploaded. I’ll make one and get it on here before long. Been hard to make videos lately. I’ll get back at it. Any questions I’ll help you all I can
Where u located at ?

@@ltstransmissionhowto5158 Hey what part of Kentucky ? I have a 2006 Silverado 4X4 and at some point I'm going to have a full tranny rebuild (before it goes bad, got 180k miles) and I'm gonna want you guys to do the work. I'm in Illinois but i have family in Owensboro and Stephensport... you guys are the most professional I've ever seen !!! thanks
I’m down close to bowling green
@@ltstransmissionhowto5158 ok thank you !!!!
Can the throttle position sensor really can cause a limp mode. ?
I had one at the shop this week that would go into limp every once in a while. The only code it was showing was throttle position. I’m not real sure. I do know a throttle position sensor being bad will mess the shifting up. And can cause the transmission to fail.
I see. Well I did the transmission swap and I’m still not getting 3&4 th gears. And still have codes of circuits electrical on all solenoids and torque converter. Any clues what I am looking for to fix this?
So it’s showing multiple codes ?
Lt’s Transmission How To yes
I would start with checking fuses. Next check your plug in on the transmission make sure it’s plugged in good. Something is up if it’s showing several codes. Possible computer.
Thanks
👍
Great vid!
Where’s the follow up video for reinstall?
Well I haven’t made a video on the reinstall on this model. I’ll make one the next time I have one in the shop
Wouldn't hurt to wear some safety glasses 🤓
That’s true. It’s a hard habit to get into.
goomer payles little brother
Now do it slow without the clothes.
Why you talking about a transfer case it says to remove a transmission assuming it's a two-wheel drive these kind of videos are just ridiculous
Well this is a 4 wheel drive so I have to remove the transfer case to get the transmission out. If you’re working on a 2 wheel drive you can skip over the transfer case part and just watch the rest of the video
why you talking from your nose
Just the way God made me. Please do not feel obligated to watch if it bothers you. I would never want to put you through the discomfort it may cause you.
Thanks for sharing bud..helped me big time..fixin' to put mine back in this weekend.
