It's so infuriating to me that companies like Levi would rather jump through all of these hoops than actually hire diverse models. It's embarrassing how far people go to avoid accessibility and inclusivity. I hate to say I'm not surprised...

    • @mile_851
      @mile_851 Год назад +60

But what would be the point? It's better to hire models that come to be diverse than to hire models for being diverse. It's weird. Instead of being judge for your professionalism you are judge for race, color, hair texture, etc. It's the same as know but now you'd be disqualified if a company has "enough" of you.
Exaclty what Victoria's secret did and it was terrible.
It's asking for a fake "inclusivity".
That doesn't mean that I like the AI generated models even if I still like the idea of being able to create someone that looks as close as possible to me and see how everything would look with my skintone, body shape, hair color and hair texture. But still, are not the actual clothes. I've seen that with skincare brands and it's terrible, feels like false advertisement to me.

@@mile_851 you're definitely making some very good points. It's hard to come across diversity that won't feel "fake" to at least some I suppose. French here - the law you mentioned was just passed and was about influencers in general with a general definition of what are influencers with paid partnerships. The law was about regulating paid partnerships with the same legislation we have for publicity, as well as banning paid partnerships for cosmetic surgery, selling alcohol, scamy medication for diseases or gambling games. the thing is I don't trust an AI model to realistically portray clothes a body. We know that in photoshoots they will snatch waists, pad models, remove panty lines, etc. to cover up a badly made, ill fitting, or cheap fabric, and more. Now all of that can be done even more easily with virtual models...and then I feel we'll still need to have reviews where people list their body measurements and if a white fabric is see-through...Especially with two men founding this i highly doubt they have a good board to give feedback on the things that people really want to know about the clothing when they already got their bag.

AI models aren't it. On top of Levi's missing the half the point of having more diverse models for their campaigns, I'm just not going to believe that clothing shown on an AI generated model is going to accurately reflect how the clothing is going to wear on that particular body type. Obviously pictures will always be edited, but I think we can still usually tell when a picture has been photoshopped to bits, but it will be harder to tell on an image that's engineered from the ground up, imho.
    Just hire the models!

They put in fancier cosmetics and perfume right at the front of the store and you have to walk through all the stink to get to the boring drugstore behind it. I am not sure who they think they're competing with, but it sure the heck isn't Sephora. At least there is always a lovely person in that area, so if you want to just get your mascara and go, you can pay right there.

I think companies defiantly need to show a lot more diverse models in their advertising. But I think if AI was used so we, as the consumer could change everything to match ourselves individually (in my case it would be a white women who is a UK size 20 and is 5ft tall) this would a good thing. There is no way any company is going to be able to get models to represent every single combination of sizes, ethnicities and abilities, so AI would be a good way of doing this. But this needs to be done alongside the companies actually using real life models in their adverts who can represent as many different people as possible and AI can't be an excuse for companies not doing this.

The airport changes are fantastic! I frequently travel just with carry on bags, and I’ve adjusted to packing limits for makeup and skincare, travel size packages, etc, but what sucks is that when I’m away I like to shop for skincare and makeup things I can’t get where I live, and usually with a carry-on suitcase only, it’s pretty limited what I can buy. Even if a product is less than 100ml, it may not fit in my 1 litre bag with the things I’ve already brought/bought. Excited for more shopping in the UK! I believe Spain is introducing this soon as well. I think the high grade scanners can scan liquids differently to detect explosives, meaning the limits will be unnecessary.

Funny enough, Boots was bought by Walgreens group years ago. They tried to be the new Sephora (if you look at the new Boots they have all those kioks for brands and stuff) as this is what brings the big money, not the pharmacy itself, like it used to be waaay back in the day. As n7 is mostly used by elderly women (when skincare didn't have many options (again, many years ago) Boots tried to come up with a more modern approach on their own brand and brought back even 17, as we are more willing to spend money 😅

On the Levi's thing, I had the same knee-jerk reaction as you. Eff that! You don't get credit if you aren't even hiring real models. But it sounds like the idea is to get every variation available for every item. Not here's our black girl, heres our heavy girl... but I understand it to be more like "show me this item on a biracial skintoned, heavy set, transwoman" and I get to see how it hangs on the different hip type and against the right skin tones. It really would be entirely too many combos to actually photograph.

James, I’ve been loving your content lately with these series and your personality just makes it a pleasure to watch 😊
I was about 5yrs old when we had this store in our small town , called JCPenney. It was 2 or 3 stories with an escalator and I remember my mom buying me my first few pairs of Levi’s. She let me pick out 2 pairs and they was pastel pink & yellow. This was in 1985, and I just loved those pants so much. We literally lived on the same street about a block over. It’s our police station now. Anyways , I told my mom about your Levi tweet and she kinda didn’t understand and I explained it to her and I’m going to send her your video as well, but she was so angry it was cute. I have a picture of my mom wearing a white pair of Levi jeans and a black tank top from the 70s. We loved the brand…but it’s really is something I feel is not moving forward socially. We’ve came far, but not far enough when it comes to diversity and now they want to use AI models!? No thank you! My mom and I have those memories, but if Levi does this we will not buy the brand and I will donate my Levi’s I do own that aren’t vintage to a shelter and the rest will be put away only because they do hold meaning to me. I’ll never wear or but Levi’s again. That just isn’t what I stand for and it will put so many Models out of work! They already have a McDonald’s in LA ( I think that’s where it is ) that’s completely run by AI and I have family that literally has been working at McDonald’s since she was 16 and now is a manager and her husband is the maintenance at all of the surrounding McDonald’s, they honestly make decent money. So this kinda sh!t is putting people out of work. My cousin and her husband have 2 little boys ages 8 & 6yrs old to take care of. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I do love Sephora too, but the Ulta pricing has a great price range across a wider array brands than Boots (in my humble opinion)! I feel like only the large Boots and Superdrugs have a good range whereas even a smaller Ulta back home has better budget options across a bigger array of brands. I do love that there are cool forward thinking brands in Sephora though, so I’ll have to check out a UK branch soon! ✨

Levi is only thinking the point is that people see someone that reflects themselves in the campaign but that's not the entirety of it. Part of why people want to see someone of their likeness included is because they then can imagine that those opportunities are possible for them too. It's not just the opportunity to wear the jeans, it's that you can see yourself as the model. But if no model has been given that position, that defeats the purpose. It's the same as if there was a woman president in America, it doesn't just make women feel reflected in positions of power and there for increase a woman's perceived value in society, it also makes women think they could actually achieve the same goal.

If I’m not mistaken, to be able to successfully file for a trademark you have to actually use it in commerce or have concrete plans to use it in the future. It’s meant specifically for protecting brand elements. So people can’t go trademarking anything and everything solely to prevent other’s from using the words. Copyright is a bit of a different thing, it means you can’t profit off of someone else’s creative work without their permission, and you don’t have to have a business to have copyright.

That's what Canada's two major pharmacy conglomerates did, first, Shopper's Drug Mart about 15 years ago, then Rexall about a decade ago. Huge store overhauls where they each respectively massively expanded their skin care and personal care inventories to be more reflective of what you'd see in a Sephora or Ulta Beauty. They really amped this up online during the original lockdowns as well.
