    I work in a store which is known for their testers. Theyre out so that people can see the true colors, give it a smell, some test it on the back of their hands. If you wanted to try the lipstick on your lips, we have a completely different set that is hidden away for swatching - skin never touches those lipsticks, always giving the customer either a cutoff with a little spatula or applying with a new makeup brush. I've never seen anyone just openly trying out all of the lipsticks on their lips - seems way too gross even pre-pandemic. I think this is both on the customer for being publicly daft but also on the staff for not pushing for a hygienic application sitdown.

    I'm a doctor and I really appreciate the way you discuss herpes. It's SO common, and people feel so guilty for it, because there's this culture of guilt and shame around "sexually transmitted diseases" that just makes life harder for everyone!

    • @cleoldbagtraallsorts3380
      @cleoldbagtraallsorts3380 2 года назад +156

      But if you're a doctor, why not point out the different types of herpes and different methods of transition. Genital herpes is not the same herpes that causes cold sores, chicken pox or shingles. Most forms are not sexually transmitted. From what Is talked about in this video it seems to be the cold sore form, not the genital form. So stds are not being discussed in the video.

      @@cleoldbagtraallsorts3380 but there really is no need to give a distinction when cold sores can also be transferred to the genitals as well as genital sores being transferred/manifesting as cold sores... if somebody has cold sores (or even if they don't presently have a sore but have HSV1, the type of herpes *usually* associated w cold sores) & gave somebody oral sex, the person receiving the oral sex can get herpe sores in their genitals, even tho it is still technically HSV1 (again, the type of herpes associated with cold sores, chicken pox, shingles etc). they will still have to deal with the sores possibly reoccurring in their genitals for the rest of their life. it is also possible for HSV2 (type of herpes *usually* associated with genitals) infection to be transmitted to a person's mouth-in other words, you could develop a cold sore if you perform oral sex on someone with genital herpes (HSV2), although that type of transmission (HSV2 being transferred/appearing as cold sores on the mouth) isn't as common as HSV1 (cold sores) being transferred to genitals. but it is indeed possible for cold sores to be transferred sexually & if you saw someone with a cold sore, you'd have no way of discerning whether it was HSV1 or HSV2. same with genital sores, there's no way someone would be able to tell what type of herpes (HSV1 or HSV2) it was just by looking at the sores. & to the person who receives genital sores - the distinction between whether its HSV1 vs HSV2 doesn't make a tangible difference in their life, they will still have to deal with mouth/genital sores for the rest of their life & the stigma associated with it, even if it is just HSV1. &either virus can be transferred to either region regardless if the person presently has active sores. herpes is herpes, it is a virus that is transferred between skin-to-skin contact &/or saliva & other fluids. & for most people with either HSV1 ORRR HSV2, herpes doesn't impact their day to day life AT ALL besides the stigma attached to it. the only real difference between HSV1 & HSV2 is the stigmatization between the two...

I thought this was common knowledge. I’ve had cold sores before, especially when it’s hot out, and I would never allow anyone to use my lip products. Same reason why I would not walk into a makeup store and try on their stuff. I believe the same warning was passed along when sharing eyeliners and mascaras if someone had a sty. She put the caps back on all six bottles, put the bottles back on the shelf, and went about the rest of her shopping. People are nasty. Use utmost caution when shopping for anything that may have a safety seal, and don't use "common use" testers without sufficient decontamination between users. Also avoid Wal-Mart whenever possible.

      Agree - great humour with you. Thanks. The cosmetic industry (and others) are not likely to disappear but people are doing the little extras as they can afford them more so now maybe. Imo. It's a riding high industry with people discovering how important self care and pampering may be to over all well being. Many love to dabble in make up and for others it's a great career. Hygiene and sanitation are part of self care. Larger companies are surely turning enough profit to offer individual samples or to get demo pods for promoting their products. Consumers are now paying for these- which was not norm not so long ago. They can write it off as advertisement expenses probably. ? And may he doing so anyway even with the charge to customers. I think I might be tempted to ask the rep trying to apply a community Lippie on me to be so kind as to demonstrate the product on themselves for me.

    Horror story - I used to work for a well known beauty brand and as always we were pushed to do demos on people's skin to demonstrate moisturisers etc. A coworker was demoing a cream on the hand of a women and noticed it was covered in foundation. When enquiring about this the women had told her she had just been sampling in another store but the colleague noticed that she had a number of weird bumps on her skin. A DAY LATER - she has to call in sick. She got scabies and was completely covered with it! She had to boil all her sheets and clothing and had to be off for weeks to recover. Beauty retailers and customers - be very careful with coming into contact with other people's skin!

    Herpes can remain dormant for YEARS and recrudesce in times of stress. Some people may have it and never even experience an active cold sore. So really she can’t prove it’s Sephora’s fault at all. Thank you! My thoughts exactly. There is no way to know if she got her herpes from the lipstick - a lot of people get it from relatives as babies. On top of that, as the experts said in this video, herpes is a fragile virus and it is very difficult to catch it from objects.
      Theoretically if you took a lipstick from someone directly after they used it and used it yourself, then maybe some of their saliva would be on the lipstick and the virus could survive long enough to transfer. But from a tester? Very unlikely.

    Back in the '80s, there was a cosmetics store in the local shopping mall, that didn't have any lipstick testers on display, although they did have them for complexion products. If you wanted to try a lipstick, you had to ask someone from staff and they would give you a tiny plastic blister pack and a tiny plastic spatula. But this was at the height of the AIDS paranoia, before anybody really knew how it spread. I wonder if something like this would work now. I can't imagine that stores could give them away for free like they did then, but they could probably sell them for a dollar apiece and call it a good compromise. In my case I feel extra furious because I NEVER put the testers on my mouth but the woman at the counter INSISTED and showed me how she sanitized the lipstick thoroughly and how she sharpened the lip liner and sanitized it as well… what I wasn’t expecting was that she’d use a vile impossible to sanitize liquid lipstick on me when my eyes were closed (for the reveal) … I’m now permanently affected and when I went back (not to fight or threaten, but make them aware of the problem and to demand that they throw away the tester) the (same) woman had the audacity to tell me that it’s not that (had gotten a diagnosis) and that I should try some natural products (she recommended some…) to heal and that it was for sure stress that caused it…. This b***h didn’t even remove the tester… I waited around for another employee to show up and told her EVERYTHING and demanded that she damage it out in front of me. Im so upset about this but I feel like there’s nothing I can do about it. I have this forever and she took away my peace of mind and my ability to kiss my little boy for a few days out of the month, my ability to blow on his food when it’s too hot and then just look at me like I was an idiot and ignore my concern… was just the icing on the cake… 🤬 a big F U to that lady. You can go your entire life with the virus in your system, and never have a single symptom. Likewise, you can suddenly develop symptoms years after contracting it (often when going through a physically or mentally stressful time). That's why it's so incredibly common. After taking that class, I just assume everyone I meet has it already, even if they think they don't.

The Sephora employee took the mascara out of the packaging, opened it and swatched it on her own hand. She told my mother the color and closed it up and put it back in the box and then handed it back to my mother. My mother and I couldn't believe what we just saw. I'm pretty sure that my bottom jaw was on the floor. Needless to say that we left without the mascara. It hurts, it affects more than the "spots" that show up. When I have a flare up it coincides with a ton of other symptoms like sciatica pain, cramps, upset stomach. It affects how well I can walk, how well I can take care of my kids. I'm angry that I have it, because I never should have, but I cannot imagine if I thought I had caught it from some makeup sample or artist how angry I would be that they gave it to me. We're supposed to be able to trust these companies, and for them to have such shit standards when we KNOW what unhygienic products and tools can do to someone is disgusting. I hope they had to pay SO much to the people who have gone after them for this.

      @Courtney Parker I don't see how I am feeding the stigma, when I'm sharing my story instead of hiding it...? People should know what it can be like to have herpes from someone who isn't afraid to talk about it, so that when they feel or see symptoms they can go get checked out instead of feeling ashamed and not getting checked. You're entitled to your opinion, but I really don't see how sharing what this disease does to me and how angry it makes me that I have it 'helps to increase' the stigma around it. Even if it was just sores, it's not like it's a pleasant disease to have, and damn sure not something that I would want other people to have to deal with regardless of the severity of their symptoms. At the same time I'm not ashamed that I have it, and no one else should be either, so I talk about it fairly openly.

    • @aestheticallysad_3016
      @aestheticallysad_3016 2 года назад +42

      @Courtney Parker just because that’s YOUR experience, doesn’t mean someone else with it doesn’t struggle really bad with it. Foh with that “feeding into the stigma.” I don’t think people with it should be shamed, especially those who contracted it from a partner that was too careless to tell them. If you have a disease that is spreadable, you should ALWAYS tell someone before having sex. (And you’d be surprised at how many people honestly don’t care if you’re honest with them!) but at the same time, it’s not like we should be looking at herpes as a “positive thing” or a “normal thing” or something that “if we contract it, it’s okay.” Which is what you sound like you’re implying when you say “feeding into the negative stigma.” It has a negative stigma, because it is a negative thing that can negatively impact someone’s life in a HUGE way. I’ve seen the judgement, the way people look at you, the way people think of you, the way people talk about you, they think your dirty, your just “fast” (for lack of a better word) and that’s why you have it, they’re scared to drink from the same cups as you, honestly they’re scared to share ANYTHING. They think if you even touch something that they have touched, they will get it. I don’t personally have it but my best friend of many years does so I know allll the details of what comes with it.. not only does the person that has it get shamed, their friends get shamed. Their family gets shamed. They think that if that one person has it, their whole friend group and family must have it too. Now THAT is the negative stigma that has to change. The stigma that you must be “dirty” if you have it. Or you just sleep around and that’s why. The stigma that you will spread it to everyone around you as if it’s airborne or something. And the massive amount of misinformation that comes with it.
      And before she got on medicine for it, it was VERY PAINFUL for her. And still is very painful during a flair-up. Thankfully with the medicine she doesn’t have symptoms/flair ups nearly as much, in fact she rarely does, but when she does she goes through hell.

Since I have memory my mother always told me to NEVER share or use personal hygiene products like hairbrushes, hair ties or beaty products if they touched the skin or even clothes. And I had a good reason to listen her, she is a doctor specializing in STD's.
    But I belive that her showing me her big medical encyclopedia with detailed pictures of every STD imaginable to me when I was like 5 was what did the trick, since my childhood I won't share my glass or water bottle even with my parents and I know they have nothing but I guess it's part of my normal behavior at this point.
    Will I do that to my kid if I ever choose to have one? Absolutly yes, not sharing your lipstick with your bf and be seen as somenone not so ''bf'' is better than having herpes or worse.

Lipsticks were never applied from the tube, had to scrape off the bullet with the stick of the q-tip and on to back of hand as your pallette, from there dip in the clean cotton end of q-tip and apply to client's lips. Didn't leave much room for artistry or precision, but back then makeup looks were still pretty soft and natural, especially at Clinique. The Dior muas would roll their eyes at our lack of brushes. I mean that sounds tragic, but at the same time more like a freak thing. What I mean is, how many school plays and such have happened where kids all had their makeup done together with no incident? That was I think the usual practice for how makeup was done in school plays, and honestly, while stories like this may be more common than I know, this is the first I have encountered in a lifelong (I'm in my 50's) of school plays doing just that with no herpes cases.
      Maybe herpes is just getting more to be an issue even in young children now, and what was a rare case like this is becoming a regular concern. Regardless, I still think something like this is an instructive lesson. Why needlessly risk a child's health and future, when there must be practical solutions, like 'bring your own makeup' and a pre-play convo with parents as to what makeup exactly their kid will need and where to get it cheaply.

    80% of the population has the virus that causes the type of herpes that cause cold sores or fever blisters in their bodies. It can be dormant for years even decades, and most of us get it as children for the first time thanks to a relative who may have had then transmitted onto us. WE usually have a first cold sore outbreak as preteens that to stress and puberty. What many don't know it's stress is the largest factor of reactivation of the virus, so it's any sort of dental work due to the dryness that occurs to our lips, and a high salt diet. She possibly kept having these sore reemerge so often because she was not throwing away lip products she applied directly to the mouth while in active infection, and as she said herself always being inner constant stress, in my opinion this is a 50/50 fault situation. She should have known if the risks of using those testers and Sephora needed better warning signs and ways of testing safely.

I would always let people know about the disposable wands we had and I'd sanitize with alcohol the stick lipsticks they would try on (this was before Covid). I remember I saw two women using a mascara tester and applying it to their eyelashes. I kindly reminded them of the disposable wands but they did not care. After they left the store, I took the tester out and made a new one.
    I also remember one little girl asking me if the Too Faced chocolate collection was edible! (Haha!!) Of course, I told her no, and that makeup was not edible. After some minutes, I saw her licking the tester palette! Thankfully, the mom was around and scolded her. Again, after they left, I took the palette tester out and made a new one.

The remover near the testers isn't there to imply you should apply it directly to the face rather it's just a way to remove the swatches you apply on your hands/arms. While I feel that it's not the store's liability if you choose to misuse the tester I do think more supervision and signage would be helpful to bring attention to how unsanitary and unsafe applying unsanitized shared makeup can be.
