awesome video man usually i prefer mono for most of the style of fishing i do which is either wharf, beach or the rocks. easier to manage, easy to get and less hassle unlike braid
Great video! I can agree with everything said. I used braided for years thinking its the best of the best, but truly not the case after years of fishing the Indian Ocean and Red Sea. The elasticity is great with mono and I have lost several fish due to them darting under coral or a shipwreck with braided. I love the series.
I have heard from a few people to keep a small lip balm tube in your tackle bag, if you get a wind knot to smear some on the knot before you pull on the braid and most of the time it will slip undone.
I had never tried braid until very recently. I was amazed how much further it casts! I fish from the shoreline of lakes in Pennsylvania with jigs and crank baits. For me, the added casting distance is what appeals to me about braid. I decided to back the spool about halfway with some monofilament to offset the cost of the braid. So far, so good. I about to put some 6lb braid on a vintage Penn 722 backed with a thick rubbery flyfishing line because I think that will work best on the plastic spool. I’m new to this and still experimenting but overall for lakeshore fishing mainly for bass and panfish braid seems like an obvious win.
Great video, the format is great and I enjoy watching the whole video. You are needed to be here to help young anglers and inspire. I fish salt and fresh water in Texas. When people start asking to many questions, I send them to you. Thanks for being here for us.
Great video as usual. Good comparison of both as well. Only thing for me is the line capacity. Being a freshwater fisherman (not casting more that 50 feet usually) I have no need for double the capacity. I personally have become a fan of Flouro. But you are 100% right on Braid and pulling hooks out of fish's mouths. I have watched Crappie fisherman fishing 10lb braid and losing fish constantly due to ripping the hook out. Anyways like I said great video and always very informative! looking forward to the next one.
I prefer braid. It has longevity over mono over time braid has less much less memory. . But i always use a mono leader to save the braid. I have found that a mono shock leader helps from snapping off lures and weights on hard casts.
Before using braid on any fishing pole, make sure the eyes wont be cut by the braid. I've used Mono for both fresh and salt and I've never had a problem. I only use Ande Mono line, on all my reels. I've tried braid and it just does not cast as far, or maybe I'm not using enough weight.
You need a better / less than a junk rod... Braid does not cut unless - 1. You use it in salty... and don't clean it. or 2. the rod is now heading toward the junk yard. Braid lets you know immediately as soon as a fish snaps, while a mono may not...
Hey Victor love your sit and how you are doing what you love. At your age it's awesome to see that in young people love the videos keep it up. Have a question do you rinse your reel's off after you fish in salt water. Keep chasing the dream.
Headed to Bradenton, FL. Probably take a party boat in the gulf. I assume no wrecks, but rather reefs. Hoping to catch some grouper to bring back for dinner. Those boats typically load the senators with mono. I to setup my own rod and bring with me, but not sure what pound test mono to use. Thanks Marty O. Love the channel.
I've used mono my whole life. I've caught fish my whole life. I've caught big fish my whole life. Don't need anything else. I use it for fresh and salt.
Same. I tried braid for 2 years but after countless wind knots and mysterious break offs as well as mid flight break offs I have since switched back to mono
@@dylanclay2741 I only just started using 20lb Yo-Zuri blue superbraid on a spinning reel I have because someone let me try the same setup on theirs. I actually liked it for what we were using it for. Other than that, I use mono on everything.

In South america a lot of people just use 40+ lbs monofilament on handlines from the rocks and catch all sizes of fish with natural baits, fishing shows in the USA is just commercials for all kinds of gimmicks
I personally disagree on the cast ability of braid, as a bass fisherman I prefer the cast of mono. larger diameter so better control on a bait caster, plus ive always found it more difficult to prevent blow ups with braid when fishing light soft plastics. I do prefer braid for heavy rigs like an Alabama though, or large soft plastics like the Osprey baits.
Victor, thanks so much for this comparison between mono and braid. I searched your videos. It occurs to me that a wire leader, maybe even a very short wire leader, might be very helpful to prevent break offs. Could you provide a short video on when to use wire leaders and when not to use wire leaders? I think that'd be very helpful. And if I missed one you've already done please direct me to it. Again thanks so much for your Channel, for your videos and for your partner!
I try to keep it really simple; most of the time I fish for bream and I use a rig with a running sinker that is allowed to run right onto the hook. Here is the rub; bream fishing usually costs you a lot of terminal tackle. There are snags and rocky bottoms and these are the best spots for catching the fish. I want to be able to tie my line onto the hook directly. I am told that I can't do this with braid, that I need a mono leader. This complicates my rig. I would need a new knot in the line to connect the leader to mainline. Apparently braid requires new knots - my old favourites won't do. This is something I wish this otherwise excellent clip had touched on; braid doesn't knot so well (so I am told). Anyway, I scare easily. And like many folk I am very resistant to change. My son is a keen braid user and he carries a special tool for cutting the line. Huh? Teeth won't do? Ahggggggg!!!
Braid holds a knot much better than any mono. It is thinner and "sinks into itself." However, I understand your position. I like and have had great success using braid for its strength, then tying to a swivel, then using a couple feet of fluro or mono as a leader. IMHO, you get the best of both worlds. The strength of the braid and the stretch of mono/fluro. I use this setup if I'm fishing fresh or salt water.
Up here in the great lakes (trolling for salmon and steelhead) we use mono on down riggers because braid likes to slip out of the rubber gator clips off the ball, and braid is used on slack lines more or less, like using lead core and copper wire line, and dipsy divers we use spiderwire stealth. All leaders are mono or flouro though as it gives a bit of a shock effect.
I completely respect the braid and have a use for it on occasion, but the things that I do not like are when you are using braid and fishing next to someone with mono and lines cross. If you're the one with the fish and you're the one with the mono, bye-bye fish. Many boats do not allow braid to be used so people do not cut off other people's fish. Yet another issue with braid is when you get stuck on the bottom or with anything else, that usually means a very difficult task of breaking it off and leads to either cutting it off I'm losing a lot of line and money or cutting your fingers. I completely understand the love for braid and the use that it brings, but for me it's cold polymer and fluorocarbon leaders.
Thank you for the information. I’m starting to use conventional reels for surf fishing and I want to get some distance. I’m getting a lot of mixed answered. Like using suffix titanium plus and 30-50 yard top shot of braid. I see people spool a whole reel with braid for distance also. If you have any extra information that would be great.
Hi the way i see it and what helps me alot is i spool my reel eith thin like like 10lb braid mono should work just as well then i have a shock leader just to cast on usualy 15 or 20lb mono a bit longer then the rod just to get the power down without snaping the line once the 9foot or hoe ever long the leader is done traveling through the eyes the smaller line have so little resistance on the eyes that the weight just keep going but it has to be thin diameter or els it rubs on the eyes more and resist the line from flowing freely thus reduce the distance thats why i have 10lb braid on and about 3 wide arms lenth of mono leader to cast trust me it feels weird the first few cast but once you understand how it works you will love it. Good luck and hope it helped you out.
Nice vid but your referring to saltwater I've got family in Florida but not myself around me are freshwater lakes and ponds so it would be catfish bass crappie I believe I'm gonna stick with monofilament line personally.
I would really love to know you have color changing braided line, but I thin a 4-5 foot mono leader and braided line works the best and gives you stretch and sensitivity
So if I fish for Blues & Stripers off the beach in New Jersey throwing, Plugs, Poppers, Swimmers, Darters etc... I should use... ??? (I recently lost a nice plug due to mono line breaking)
so much to learn after I got to "The Sunshine State", before in Indiana I only catch bass , catfish ,and sunfishes, and I get skunk 8 times out of 10 lol
I do braid on small spinning reels, mono backing on big spinning reels to save some money and I do mono on my conventionals with braid backing since I usually target bigger things on them
I dont think i agree with the strength. Ive used 50# mono forever. I switched to 40# braid and that stuff breaks like 12 # mono. I have to use 80-100# braid to get the same affect as 50# mono. Now it is true you can get a lot more line on the reel with braid but i do not believe is equal in strength.
best braid is more abraision resistant than best mono with same diameter and if you take one moment, it's no reason to don't take braid with the same diameter than mono cause you have the same line capicity and with the same diameter and 50% of the lines is cutted on a rock, the mono will probably break, but the braid after that abraision have the same or more breaking power than the mono before it hits the rock. topshot is an different thing, but even their a very thick braid can be better if you don't need stiffness and stretch. cheers
I have had problems with braided line. spiderwire is the line I am using. but when I tried to pull the line to test my drag the line spins around the spool without the drag moving . I thought maybe the line was not tight enough around the spool, so I took it off and respond it tighter and after a few uses the line does it again. Was wondering if you had any problems like this or suggested how to fix it
When you go to tie your braid to the spool, leave a long tag end and lay it along the spool and wind on the first several wraps over that tag end, this will help the line grip. Doesn’t need to be neat and perfect, you just want the first several wraps of line to be in contact with that tag end. And when you spool up the reel do it under a decent amount of tension.
I had the same problem recently with braid on a shallow plastic spool for a Mitchell 300. I thought I had lost the drag washers or something as the whole reel of braid was spinning on the spool. I decided to take off the braid and fill the spool halfway with mono and then the rest of the way with the braid. So far so good. I think the mono just sticks better somehow, especially on a plastic spool.
Good video . I wish you added flourocarbon to this convo. I recently ordered a new reel and decided I was gonna fill it with 12 lb floro for reds and trout.
Hi, i fish in sweden after atlantic Salmon in saltwater sea! Do not fish in freshwater. I have a shimano ultegra 5000 reel. Should i use mono or braid? What is best to use to get more salmon fish?
Mono, especially for the weaker of us has another good thing! With they'r stretch they eat a lot of the energie of the fisch. The fish is faster exousted and you are not as fast. Oh he mentioned it seems like im not needed here. 😔
Great video! Fishing braid youll have less line issues but land less fish. Mono you’ll replace regularly lose cast distance but pull less hooks = land more fish. Ide never run straight braid or mono though. Braid to mono leader gives you cast distance without getting spooled plus flexibility on landing fish.
Hey Vic I am curious on some areas to find pilchards to use as bait I usually catch mine at the pier but I haven’t seen any bait there for a couple months now I’m just curious if there is anything specific I should look for like types of structure I fish out of port Everglades and I’m just trying too see if I can get some tips on good places to find pilchards thank you for your time and love the channel 👍🏻
My question is, and I seem to be running into problems with....is it effective to cast and crank with braided line? All the videos I see when people are using braided line when they're reeling in their fish you can actually hear the sound of the line against the pole. If I'm casting a deep runner in heavy current is it making that noise as im reeling in the rapala?
Ok so here’s the thing, using straight braid for casting (in my opinion) is a bad idea for conventional reels. If you backlash, you will burn your braid and have to change it more. And yes it runs against your guides when reeling in (if you have crappy guides it can start to crack ceramics or degrade them in general). What I do in California (Bc that’s where I live) I always do about 75-120yards of mono topshot. I fish 40lb mono topshot, and 80lb braid typically for casted. Just give it a try and figure out what you like, I do this Bc I fish from piers in cali for thresher sharks, and this works fine for it.
@@HyperFaultic thank you. Yes the very day I started using braided line I stopped catching fish. I started using it because I got a gigantic brown trout on my line using mono and it snapped my line. Pissed off, I vowed to never lose one again so I put some braided on and now nothing
*Have used the braided line for several years **enjoyable.fishing** recommend both for salmon in the summer as well as walleye through the ice. Can’t beat it for the price!*
I caught my biggest bass over 8 lbs on mono but lost bigger ones because it stretches lost more than handful of it going to new line that's held me back from huge bass over 10 lbs
Was it you that bought all the line off of bull buster dammit I was gonna get some 2500 yards of 30 lb test for this spring breaks blacktip migration and it's sold out
Actually just talked to our production lead and we can have the 2500 Yard Spool Of Yellow 30Lb available by tomorrow, put it up on the site for you just now
Hey thanx for the video i made the switch to braid purely on line distance and it sure make small fish feel massive but im thinking of switching back to 10lb mono with leader still need to test out the feel and the impact it will make on landing fish but i had a look today 10lb mono is the same diameter as 30lb braid its scary to think of it that way. My question is would you recomend switching to 10 or even 6lb mono from my 10lb braid i do love my braid and never gave me any problems but i feel the cost for what im fishing is bit exteme would i make a mistake going down a size and using mono i always have loose drag anyway i hate snaping line
Do not forget to warn people about braided line's ability to cut people far worse than monofilament. We old school Cuban yoyo fishermen accustomed to dragging monsters out of bridge /reef/oyster structure with 100# mono know about line cuts as anyone else knows what a drag line cuts can be; but braid is another story; it's a lot more dangerous to work around.
I’m starting to get in to shark fishing. I’m getting a tyronos 50lrsa and I was thinking of just spooling it up with strait 80lb braid. Comment your thoughts. Cheers James

Ide never run straight braid or mono though. Braid to mono leader gives you cast distance without getting spooled plus flexibility on landing fish.
C H how long should the leader be???
Hey Vic I am curious on some areas to find pilchards to use as bait I usually catch mine at the pier but I haven’t seen any bait there for a couple months now I’m just curious if there is anything specific I should look for like types of structure I fish out of port Everglades and I’m just trying too see if I can get some tips on good places to find pilchards thank you for your time and love the channel 👍🏻
thank buddy great video
I fish both
My question is, and I seem to be running into problems with....is it effective to cast and crank with braided line?
Pissed off, I vowed to never lose one again so I put some braided on and now nothing
great info very informative thank you
Can you use green braid for.dropshot in a blurry mossy freshwater? Or mono leader at end is better?
*Have used the braided line for several years **enjoyable.fishing** recommend both for salmon in the summer as well as walleye through the ice. Can’t beat it for the price!*
Having braid with fluro leader
Awesome video
Can I tie my paddle tail lure directly to the braid?
Should mention tangles mono much easier to untangle but more likely to spring off a spinning reel if it's new
Good piint
You didn’t mention braids longevity over mono. Mono might be cheaper but it doesn’t last as long.
Aaron Garrett That's very true. But at the same time, you've got the ability to buy lots of mono for cheap.
I caught my biggest bass over 8 lbs on mono but lost bigger ones because it stretches lost more than handful of it going to new line that's held me back from huge bass over 10 lbs
thats really nice but mono freezes and snaps in the cold . like he said they have their place and uses
What are the differences (use and qualities) between flouro and mono?
From what you’re say, mono for the win. Braid only for large mouth
no

But which is better for the environment? Mono or braid?
Uh, I'ma say mono. It's more abrasion resistant.
Hi bro i wanted just alittle tip off you. I was going for blue marlin and also a king fish what was the best premium rod with reel for these fish?

What would be best for big catfish?
Thank you for this video! :)
My question is would you recomend switching to 10 or even 6lb mono from my 10lb braid i do love my braid and never gave me any problems but i feel the cost for what im fishing is bit exteme would i make a mistake going down a size and using mono i always have loose drag anyway i hate snaping line
just use mono backing, if you want to save on braid
Well done Vik ! :D
What is the best line for shark fishing
Good information
I like braid but good video
Do not forget to warn people about braided line's ability to cut people far worse than monofilament. We old school Cuban yoyo fishermen accustomed to dragging monsters out of bridge /reef/oyster structure with 100# mono know about line cuts as anyone else knows what a drag line cuts can be; but braid is another story; it's a lot more dangerous to work around.
Braid is my go to line
Do a updated rod and reel arsenal
What about a stripers teeth vs braid ,should i put a mono leader
I was told that I should use braid for wahoo, and mono might stretch and over a little time, will break. Is that true?
ThePrimeGameProtector Braid lasts longer, you might need to change out mono a little bit. But it should do some time.
Thanks for the info ,
Hey man I'm wanting to get a spinning set up for sharks for vacations what's a good set up for sharks in sc
Top video thanks alot
I’m starting to get in to shark fishing. I’m getting a tyronos 50lrsa and I was thinking of just spooling it up with strait 80lb braid. Comment your thoughts.
Cheers James
Is that bull buster braid a 4 strand or 8 strand braid?
I would use 8 braid its stronger and it wont saw in to your eyes of your rod
