I love how your productivity advises change throughout the years. Not only does it show what works for someone might not work for others, but also what works for you now, might not work for you later too. Good stuff!
I’m a fan of the no alarm clock life as well. I feel like I wake up so much more peaceful. It feels good listening to the body instead of telling the body to listen.
Matt is one of the best at giving advices. It seems like he has been doing great. Somehow we all need to limit our screen time as much as possible. It can certainly make a huge difference.
I have a alarm/light that simulates the sun rising for 30 minutes, and then when it's time for the alarm, the alarm is bird song. It's a life-changer! No more being scared awake, and it feels much more natural.
@@SilverHawk214 I don't know what brand the OP has, but it must be something like a Philips Wake-up Light, it matches the description perfectly. I also have one, and chirping birds is one of the alarm sounds. Very relaxing, even though I'm always already awake before the alarm even goes off, because of the rising sun simulation lol.
@@SilverHawk214 It IS a Phillips Wake-up light, though it's an older version (I've had it for quite a few years). If you Google "wake up light" or "Phillips wake up light" you'll get lots of options. I'd be sure to also say something like "nature sounds alarm" if you want to wake up to something nice. :) I don't know what the other brands are like, but I can recommend Phillips, based on the one I have.
@@Jimmyvb98 It's such a struggle, because that's the point of the sunlight simulation, but if you wake up say 20 mins early, it's like, "Do I get up, or sleep for 20 mins?" which kind of defeats the purpose LOL.
Is it just me, or is Matt-Nat a legit believable hippie character? Either way, I think this is amazing & I wish I had the lifestyle to support it. I try my best to not set my alarm on the weekends but during the week, despite being a morning person, I wouldn’t get up in time to get the things accomplished pre-work that I want to do. I try to ‘front load’ my day with working out etc, take time for myself before work, because I’m much more energetic and focused earlier in the day.
This video is great as always Matt but as a 7-4 Monday to Friday employee it isn't super practical! For my 9-5ers, parents, pet owners, etc, if you try no alarms on your off days (if you get those) but end up oversleeping that's from a BAD SLEEP AVERAGE! Your body is trying to make up for lost time (and who can blame it!) If you have a poor and inconsistent sleep schedule (5 hrs one day, 2 the next day, 10 the next) you are not going to wake up feeling great with or without the alarm. The consistent hours every night create higher quality sleep and a more pleasant wake up, not the other way around!
Best thing you can do to prevent laying in bed vegetating for an hour after waking up is to move your phone away from the bed. I put mine on a charger across the room. Go back to a traditional alarm, or use a smart device such as an Echo to run your alarm schedule. Also, don't change your sleep habits (much) on the weekend; It makes Monday that much more difficult.
If you should ever decide to have kids, I would love to see a re-make of this video. They are alarm clocks without snooze buttons that ring at random times throughout day and night surely produce an interesting sleep chart :-)
Love the topic! When living alone, using a wake-up light helped me so much, haven't heard an alarm clock in almost two years now! Those sounds can only drive one crazy. Programming a smart light bulb to slowly wake one up is another option and you don't have to buy an extra wake up light - minimalism!
Matt 6AM in Australia here. Thanks for another great video! I realllyyyy can't wait to see your videos if you and Nat decide to have kids. Much of your advice will change in light of the struggles of parenting.
Good to see you handle this topic. I’ve had the fortune of living w/o an alarm for years. For the past couple of years i had to return to the dreadful alarm sounds of my iPhone. If i may suggest a tip, what’s far less annoying than an alarm is the way my parents used to wake up in time, i.e. by setting a clock radio (station). At least you wake up with the sound of music and/or voice(s).
Lmao quality content Matt n Nat. I obviously do not set an alarm on my days off but dang my body sure does wake up as if it's time to go to work 😔🤷♀️ so yes, I agree no alarm is needed as long as your length of sleep is adequate 👍🏼

Love this video for many reasons 👏 Recently I have been winning the mornings starting the night before. I think the reminder for when you should be winding down, has helped me a lot. And Consequently, been conscious of how much sleep I’m gonna have to win the day.
Anyone that still wants to use an alarm, I use the default android clock app on my pixel and the alarm sound is a spotify playlist of nature sounds. I have the volume max but it gradually increases. It's different every morning and wakes me up somewhat peacefully. When i used a normal alarm i would literally jump up out of bed with my heart racing.
I switched to a smartbulb in my bedroom that slowly lightens in the morning. It's helped me, especially in the winter, to wake up more calmly and naturally.
Love ya, but, are you basically saying that you don’t need an alarm clock except on the days you actually have….work commitments at a certain time? Like 90% of people do every day?
Yeeeeah this one was kind of a miss for me. Wish I had that privilege, I love Matt so very much, but wish he'd at least acknowledged that. People have multiple jobs, long schedules that they don't choose, and require alarms to peel themselves out of bed instead of the luxury of waking up without anxiety
Okay, the time has come for me to do this as well. I've been having sleep issues forever and usually if I let myself just sleep without an alarm, I end up sleeping 10 hours or even more. But I've never been able to stick to the "no alarm" thing for more than a week. So this time, I'm doing this for real. It might mean shifting my whole schedule around, but fortunately I don't have any early morning commitments and can choose my work hours flexibly.
Very nice one! I've recently started going to bed earlier and even though I set an alarm clock, I end up actually waking up earlier because I got my full rest. And it has been amazing! Loved the video Matt!
I set my alarms late and usually wake up an hour before it goes off but on those occasional days I do sleep in I appreciate the extra hour and I appreciate the alarm making sure I'm not late for my day plans.
