getting 5 hours of sleep (11pm-4am) is proven to damage your brain across the board. Your chances of getting Alzheimer's disease, regressing long and short term memory, and congestive heart failure all go up. Don't believe me? do some true and honest research yourself. I agree that more time in the morning is so helpful, and coffee definitely makes you forget that you are lacking sleep. I wish we all had a few extra hours in the day. But it simply is not healthy. Especially for those with brains still growing. If you are under the age of 25, your brain is most likely still growing. around 8 -9 hours of sleep is needed for those with growing brains, and 6-8 for those brain is not growing. Like I said, do your own research.
A new study has discovered that when people sleep, special lymph channels in the brain called the “glymphatic system” actually open up and drain dangerous neurotoxins from the brain into the cerebral spinal fluid. One can only imagine what 2025 standards will be like for the highly motivated people... If you don't wake up an hour before going to sleep! you are losing the game of LIFE!!
You make a good point though, besides the humor. The world does seem to be getting faster and faster and we're all trying to pack more stuff into our lives. I think I heard that a fairly large percentage of people in Japan have been dropping dead from exhaustion, due to over working. Productivity is great, but maybe we're too focused on that and not enough on taking it easy and "smelling the roses" so to speak. I guess I'm trying to say that most of us, or at least myself, should be striving for balance in life.
I like this mindset, I really do, but in practice we know that 8 hours of sleep is *essential* to a healthy body and a healthy mind. Waking up at 4:30 means being asleep at 20:30, maintaining a social life or giving time to your family is almost impossible in this time frame. Don't let this mindset fool you guys, sleep is just as important as training or diet.
Same sleep is important for my body recover, I train bjj and wrestling and workout most days. I get injured more easy when I don’t sleep enough. Good concept. Extreme for some I think most just need to move it up some. But each case is situational
I go to bed around 10ish and wake up around 6am without an alarm clock. I do get a couple of hours of productive time and/or gym (I exercise in alternate days) and some reading, before going to work. In the video Casey says he uses 3 alarms, it is a sign his body needs more rest.
New research suggests that lack of sleep allows the brain to develop Alzheimers. Both Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher boosted that slept 6 hours a day, then they both suffered from the same brain disease. Also training 3 hours before bedtime increase your core body temperature, that also interferes with the quality of one's sleep. Going off the research, Casey is sadly leaving himself short in later life just to be productive today. Time will tell.
Lmao i feel you. not every people fortunate enough to work at 10. Mine starts at 8 and ends at 8 pm (12 hours/day for a week). wish i could lived in better country with better work regulation :/
Well, it might sound funny, but I really feel myself more tired, if I sleep 8 hours. I wake up at 4-5 am, feeling fresh, and if I'm like "I dunno what to do, I should go sleep back", then I'll feel myself not that good.
@@uilmandala8609 Part of that is recovery. Getting less sleep than you need is like lifting weights or doing hill sprints. Your body gets tired and needs to recover. But, it's good at ignoring it as long as you keep pushing. That moment when you sit down (or, in this case, lie down for more than four hours), your body moves into recovery and it does not want you going anywhere. Sleep for 7 to 8 hours a night every night for a month and you will be changed forever.
@@Argonnosi, I was sleeping exactly 7-8 hours and felt badly, until changed my lifestyle and the way I eat. And I'm waking up 4-5 am before alarm now, because I feel myself absolutely recovered. And can't even stay longer in my bed, it's just impossible. :D
sleep is not about how long you sleep its about how effectivly you sleep. while sleeping you are not actualy recovering 100% of the times. som people actualy have a rare condition that makes them recover 100% of the time they sleep so they get away with 3-4hours no problem sleep. abusing sleeping meds can allso effect your bodys way of resting. iv had periods of my life where i could only sleep for 2-2,5hours per night while wakeing upp every 20-30min but still be able to go about my day working out, playing video games and going to work. i allso had this one week where me and my friends did amfetamin and ADHD medicin for 8days straight. no sleep minmal food like i ate maby 1skittles bag of candy during that time.and tons of water and drugs and then i whent to work and worked (you do feel exhausted in your body but you still have energy from the drug to push on) the thing is the human body adapts to what it needs to do
Jocko’s line of reasoning holds up and can be applied even without getting up at 4am. He utilizes the foundations of habit building to become the future self he wants to be. Casey seems to work hard for the sake of working hard…to tell people he works hard. Tho, he is more entertaining than Jocko.
Casey works hard because his hard work produces stellar results. The guy is one of the OG creators on YT and has retained a massive audience over the course of like 10+ years.
You should try to get Jonny Kim on. He's a Navy SEAL Pointman/Sniper/Combat Medic that served under Jocko's Task Unit Bruiser. He later graduated from Harvard Medical School, and then became an actual NASA Astronaut. His story from childhood to now is incredible.
Great video. As someone who was in the military for over 20 years, I can tell you that starting early in the morning is tough if youre not used to it, but over time you get naturally conditioned to it. It works folks. Also, wash off in the shower in cold water!
Read the book 'Why we sleep' and you'll never want to sleep less than 7hrs again. Strong links to not sleeping enough and Alzheimer's. The brain needs its recovery time.
Isnt this funny?? I have two sisters who arr doctors. They have the shittiest sleep, social life and diet because of their work and responsibilities but they have to help others
Will Zay that’s 9pm ure taking about going to sleep , which is def not Practical for a family life. Even if ure single and alone 9pm is incredibly early for sleeping , def don’t agree with a 4am wake up
But he is not sleep deprived, he goes to bed at 11pm and wakes up at 5 that's solid 6hrs of sleep which is perfect for an adult 28+ 🤷🏻♀️ it's just that he goes to bed early
+vinniesmyyth. I can agree with the idea that the early hours are the most productive for some, for others it's the late hours. No matter when you decide to sleep, you should try to get your 8 hours. Casey is getting what now? 5.5 hours between 11 pm and 4:30 am? In the video they try to make it sound like discipline creates more time, and to a certain degree it probably does, but at the end of the day Casey is still sleeping 2.5 hours less than he should, which is proven "HORRENDOUS FOR YOUR HEALTH!" to quote Awesomeness Hippopotamus. The problem is that they're making it sound like it's a positive and healthy thing to skip sleep.
No, 6 hours is NOT enough (read Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker). The thing is - the lack of sleep affects you (and your performance) even though you don't realise it. It's like when you're drunk - you think you're not nearly as drunk as you really are. Get 7-9 hours. And yes, that 1 hour makes a difference.
Kamron Darkshani at your age you should be getting 9-10 hours sleep it has great benefits for muscles, brain, height, happiness, health, if you work 14 hours a day I’m very confused on how you function, along with fitting school, and since you seem motivated extra chores, maybe toss in a sport or volunteer work to get ready for college and there’s just no way your alive Rn.
Shelashi EU no he won’t. When it is 4 am in New York it’s already 10 am in London. So naturally he should be waking up way before Casey. That means he must sleep past 10:30 am every day.
xD was a joke, you can see it either way, but youre kinda right, I mean 4am is 4am in London and New York (same sun position) just one is later because earth rotation, Time is local (depends on the position relative to what we measure, sun in this case) thats why we have UTC. Its arguable that we are both right and wrong xD
Sucks ass to get up but you’ll feel better for doing it, it all starts from small things from making your bed to getting up and doing something productive
If getting less sleep is such a good idea, why sleep at all? I appreciate the overall message, but this "sleep is for the weak" mentality is dangerous. Good sleep is essential to a healthy body and mind.
I agree on this. You have to sleep at least 8 hours. Still if that means removing those 2 hours of sitting in front of your computer like I am exactly doing right now, It's worth it.
x1plus1x Dr McDougall has some great literature on the effects of sleep and actually its depressive effects. He breaks it down and has studied people who switch to less hours of sleep and they have improved mood and energy
I HATE these "waking up early is the key to everything" rhetorics. Getting such little sleep is TERRIBLE for you. The "discipline" is getting up at the same time every day. IF that is 5am, great. IF that is 8am, great. Getting 6+ hours of sleep is important. YOUNG PEOPLE: Get enough sleep, and be disciplined enough to get what you need to get done accomplished.
"Maybe it's not my fault, but what can I do about it?" This is perhaps the most powerful line I've heard in my life. I was constantly abused through out my adolescence, and I sometimes drown in my memories to the point I can't even function well for simple daily tasks. I never knew an answer for my anger and rage, until I heard him say "Maybe it's not my fault, but what can I do about it?" It's indeed not my fault that my parents are both shit, but feeling sorry for oneself is the most useless thing you can do for yourself. It's time for me to ask myself, "What can I do about this situation?"
Yes; absolutely yes. My parents were shit too and at some point you have to take responsibility for your life regardless of whether or not your problems are your fault. That's just how it works in a free society. That's the price of freedom.
Up at about 0430 and then bed at say 2300 (if he sleeps at the gym). That's 5 and a half hours sleep. Less than 7 to 8 hours sleep a day WILL reduce your immune system. If you want to be getting up at 0430, you need to be asleep by 2100.

Waking up 4am will not get us anywhere, without knowing why. I believe PURPOSE and PASSION is the source of why we do such things like waking up early.
People who labor all their lives but have no purpose to direct every thought and impulse toward are wasting their time - even when hard at work. ~Marcus Aurelius
That's why I set two alarms, on each side of my bed. Had to set a third one that's out of my reach because I would still manage to shut them off, fall back to sleep and not remember any of it.
Why We Sleep: The New Science of Sleep and Dreams I love the video, but not every one needs to wake up at 4 AM, if 9 or 10 AM works better for you and you can be productive at night (when people are asleep and social media is dead etc.) you can do that too. Don't feel too pressured by this video.
puremonk216 exactly! People have different circadian rhythms and are productive at different times of the day. Many people are much more suited to getting up later and going to bed after midnight. Plus every individual has a different minimum amount of sleep that they can function on. Getting up early on 5 hours sleep is only going to work for certain people. I’ll take my advice from a research psychologist that specializes in sleep, not a Navy Seal.
i agree with you, there is a great piece on the new york times about night people who get more work in the night that in the day... this is really not healthy, or a generalization for everybody.
This exactly. I used to work 8a-8p shift at the clinic with documentation due by 7 am the next day. So I'd stay up late doing it rather than risk running into problems just as things were due the next day. Getting up at 5 wouldn't have been enough. I'd have to get up at 2 to start my day. (And yes. All told my work day was frequently 16-17 hours long). Now I have a baby. I still would rather stay up late doing stuff and sleep in as late as possible instead of trying to get up super early before her. If I do that it's like ive worn myself down before the onslaught of toddlerhood even begins.
Frankly arguing that everyone can function on 5 hours sleep a night is a bit ridiculous and against scientific evidence... most people are VERY unproductive (even confused I would say) on that amount of sleep... it is not weakness... it is how their brains work and the amount of sleep they need. Unhealthy advice here Casey.
Yep.... plus some people are wired to be night owls and are actually more productive at night. I don’t think there is one right answer... basically - we just need to be less addicted to distraction and more connected to ourselves.... the timing is irrelevant. :)
Mentally I function better the less sleep I have as someone who has had insomnia from age 10-26 plus had a baby as a single Mum and bub also had sleep issues. Physically though I always feel best on exactly 9 hours but I wake up with so much brain fog haha
I've had the honor of working with Jocko before and he is everything as advertised! He's honest, intense, awesome, freak'n badass! Just being in the same room with him and you'll get fired up to take on the world!
Yes you're so humble but look down on the guy in the video because he's not in the same line of work as you. Let me tell you something, that's the definition of being arrogant. Opposite of what you call humble.
There are people who look up to Neil Armstrong as well as other influential figures. If someone were to say that they look up to Neil Armstrong, would you advise them not to since you don't need advice from some guy like Neil Armstrong? Hence, why I called you out on being arrogant. The guy in the video is successful in his own right and people can choose to follow him. No need to be condescending. On the contrary, we don't all "put on our pants" the same way. Some of us in this world don't have enough to put on anything resembling pants and others have enough money to put on designer jeans/dress pants. Point being, we all lead different lives and go about them in different ways. So sometimes it's helpful learning from others.

If you don't wake up an hour before going to sleep! you are losing the game of LIFE!!
and by 2040 everyone has heart problems from lack of sleep
I don't think they say sleep less, just go to bed earlier if you wanna wake up at 5 to take advantage of the early hours.
had to reread it twice xD
Rambling Ramul jocko’s book sales jump 40% by the morning! Next week Tesla arrives for Candice 😂
Stef Otten underrated comment
Arnold S. Said to just sleep faster
In the video Casey says he uses 3 alarms, it is a sign his body needs more rest.
then sleep at 10:00 and wake up 5:00. Seven hours are not bad bro.
5 hours of sleep?! ok so now I understand why Casey wears sun glasses during the day :D
Tf🤣
You mean st 4:42 AM lol
Hahahaha
🤣👍
New research suggests that lack of sleep allows the brain to develop Alzheimers. Both Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher boosted that slept 6 hours a day, then they both suffered from the same brain disease. Also training 3 hours before bedtime increase your core body temperature, that also interferes with the quality of one's sleep. Going off the research, Casey is sadly leaving himself short in later life just to be productive today. Time will tell.
Your right, nobody else is up. I like the early quiet mornings. Gives you time to read and go over everything happening in the World !

You need to wake at 2am 😂
whenever i get up really early then when 11am comes it feels like it should be 2pm
Exactly.. dude likes like he works for himself. Makes his own hours.
I think 4 hour of sleep a day is perfect. Then I won't feel tired until I get my 8 hours of sleep during the night.
😂😂😂

REMINDER:
SLEEP DEPRIVATION IS HORRENDOUS FOR YOUR HEALTH!
Then go to sleep early
VinnieSmyyth I’m guessing they’re talking about Casey’s 6 hours of sleep...?

Why is "health" in quotation marks though? It's an irresputable fact that sleeping less than 8 hours a night has a negative impact on your health.
Go to bed earlier
There are many studies that proved that you don't really need 8 hours of sleep. You're good with 6...
x1plus1x Dr McDougall has some great literature on the effects of sleep and actually its depressive effects. He breaks it down and has studied people who switch to less hours of sleep and they have improved mood and energy
Great video! The start of anything is just getting up and getting started. Don't quit!

Bruce Wayne I disagree Batman
Me too.
Yes; absolutely yes. My parents were shit too and at some point you have to take responsibility for your life regardless of whether or not your problems are your fault. That's just how it works in a free society. That's the price of freedom.

Why We Sleep: The New Science of Sleep and Dreams
I love the video, but not every one needs to wake up at 4 AM, if 9 or 10 AM works better for you and you can be productive at night (when people are asleep and social media is dead etc.) you can do that too.
I’ll take my advice from a research psychologist that specializes in sleep, not a Navy Seal.
puremonk216 you should make a book.
Love you.
i agree with you, there is a great piece on the new york times about night people who get more work in the night that in the day... this is really not healthy, or a generalization for everybody.
Agreed. You can do just as much in a day but moving you schedule to later during the day...
5 hours of sleep a night is unhealthy. Burnout and depression is what comes from those sleep schedule
Yep.... plus some people are wired to be night owls and are actually more productive at night. I don’t think there is one right answer... basically - we just need to be less addicted to distraction and more connected to ourselves.... the timing is irrelevant. :)
Super unhealthy to function on that amount of sleep. Im an electrical engineer, if i go to work on 5 hours of sleep i could cause someones death.
