  • About TEDx, x = independently organized event
    In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
    Sharks have been maligned in the media and because of this the world does not seem to care about the ongoing slaughter estimated up to 100 million individuals a year.
    William will be giving a personal account of his first shark encounter and the turning point in his life with regards to sharks and how they have been portrayed. This will include his close encounters with the tiger shark as well as the great white shark.
    William will also touch on the critical role of the shark in the marine ecosystem and what we, as individuals, can do to lessen the pressure on the over fishing of these magnificent animals.

    Sad that this is still relevant in 2019. The mass killing of sharks is heartbreaking

    got to admire the man's sincere love for such a powerful and misunderstood animal.

    That was motivating, If you consider your self caring for animals, then you should care for them as a hole, not just kittens.
    Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!

    Now in 2022 we are wondering how it all could go wrong and bad still without asking the really big questions in life.

    As an apex predator - sharks are just as dangerous as lions or bears - but a professional experience wild life expert diver can swim with sharks more safely than a regular human because he is familar with shark body language and how not to provoke a predator response. This video does not disclose or review shark body language or how to swim with sharks but only suggest it is possible..

      @heather-xz9cu 7 лет назад +2

      not necessarily. many people have ran into sharks underwater before, even he shared the story of the first time he did & he didn't know anything about them. he explained it all in the talk. sharks are scared of us. they won't eat you, weather you're experienced with them or not.

    • @CallOfDerzy
      @CallOfDerzy 5 лет назад +1

      if you watched the full video he clearly states that he is an experienced diver and doesnt recommend jumping in the water with sharks because there are risks that he is able to mitigate from years of experience.

    I resent the use of the word "us" here. It's East Asians hunting sharks to near extinction. I had nothing to do with it.

    As a young boy I spent a lot of time spear fishing.
    I was good at it and really enjoyed myself.
    In my teens I decided to become a professional fisherman. I obviously have seen a lot of sharks in the fifty years I spent as the skipper of my own vessel. After viewing first hand what they were capable of doing to a carcass, I got out of the water and have never put so much as a toe back in any ocean, river or lake since.
    Call that an over reaction if you want but the fact is, the people maimed and killed by sharks over time is no small number.
    Whether they were attacked in error or not is of no importance to me.
    Without going into specifics, I have been an adrenaline junkie all my life and have participated in many risky pursuits that most of my friends and aqaintences have suggested are too extreme from a safety point of view but always have they been things reliant upon my decision making and physical abilities. Never would I put my faith in a creature that has demonstrated time and time again to be unpredictable.
    Its possible also that the image of very experienced spear fisherman minus the lower half of his body that I had the misfortune of seeing, reinforced my resolve to stay out of the domain of sharks.
    His mistake it seems was to not have the presence of mind to confront it and foster a feeling of mutual respect
    by initially intimidating it.

      An average of 10 people die from sharks each year. More people die of coconuts!! Sharks are amazing but of course when under threat they will strike back. It DOESN’T happen often!! Sharks are beautiful creatures but we need to keep them there.10 humans get killed a year and we kill 100 million of them. I’m pretty sure everyone can figure out what that means. They are at risk, not us.

    • @Kamadev888
      @Kamadev888 3 года назад +1

      ridiculous. Where'd you get the info from? TV? Did you not listen to the talk? Less than 10 people a year die from sharks, more die of peanuts. Please stop being paranoid and enjoy the sea. The other commenter said it better than me.
