AIC were a metal/hard rock band. They were the only band labeled as grunge that didn't reject the label of metal. Soundgarden and others would always just claim to be a rock band and wouldn't even acknowledge metal influences. AIC on the other hand always said they were basically a metal band and acknowledged Black Sabbath, Maiden, Metallica, etc. as huge influences.
Not arguing, not disagreeing. Just saying that none of the Seattle bands liked the "grunge" label. And Alice felt like they belonged to a metal genre mostly. Long live AIC! Whereas Nirvana labeled themselves as "pop/punk" or "punk/pop", and they frequently said some of their main influences were Metallica [Cobain was crazy for Ride the Lightning/Whiplash], Black Sabbath, Black Flag, The Knack, and the Bay City Rollers. Whatever that makes them. :>)
Hard disagree here. Layne's voice was more suited for Rock. Layne is one of my favourite vocalists ever, but he wouldn't hold a candle to Bruce Dickinson when singing metal.
Alice is metal but okay. Love hate love is all the proof you need. Layne's huge range and heavy distortion is a lot more metal than Bruce's singing style in my opinion.
It's weird to see how many other singers with BIG names have tried to sing L.Stayley's stuff ,using all their experience and technique. And no one sounds as good... just technically not many can sing this stuff with ease... Layne did though... high out of his mind even... he did so naturally, those insane vocal parts... So few can do that... of course original is always better and Layne wrote what works for his voice and all, but still as a singer myself i find his style, technique and way of writing one of a kind... and to me it's something u gotta be born with... can't be taught to do all that... I don't think he got the recognition he deserved as one of best Metal/Rock singers of last 2 decades...

Meanwhile, since Layne has left us, I think Jerry has been focusing in on his unique mid-high range. One of my favourite concert recordings is MTV Unplugged with Alice In Chains and in my opinion he wasn't near as good back then. He has since learned to try to cover Laynes impressive range, while Phil has focused lower, and the two combining make a strange but unique mix. I think Phil finds it hard to find an octave below Layne, but its a cool adaptation. PS I'm pretty high btw lol .

For those not aware by the way, this is pitch corrected. When the original gig happened (before the video aired) there was an audio bootleg and he's much more out of key. Them Bones was the more solid of the two performances if I remember correctly. Phil's voice had actually improved a lot by the time Over the Under was recorded, so this gig came a few years too early.
I feel like Phil put alot of heart into this performance. The rough around the edges style really works well, hes really feeling the music and its evident. plus he holds his damn ear the whole time so he looks so pained to be singing haha.
when you do that with passion !!! no matter the voice you have still great...... the diference is that layne had passion but also he got one of the greatest voice of ROCK of all time never reached but still great
It's a shame that screaming tore Phil's voice up, because his smoky, dark tonality would've been perfect for this song. 25 years ago he would've killed it. Here he was straining for every note and it shows. A for effort, not so much for execution. But I listened to Superjoint's second record this morning and with all that screaming it's a wonder he can still talk. It's a killer record.
Phil got a incredible range back then like Mike Patton. He could scream, yell, rap and sing really great. Fucking amazing seeing Alice, Duff and Phil together....
Fucking Amazing!! Philip H. Anselmo killed it and Layne would be proud as they were good friends. So R.I.P. to Layne, Mike, and Dimebag!! A.I.C. and Pantera 4 Life!!!
Looks a lot like Phil Anselmo didn't have proper monitors and couldn't hear very well. His timing is way off (not the video sync, but his voice in relation to the band), but his usual singing is very percussive and grooves. It's still in the wrong key for him. Better than Hetfield though, because Anselmo gets the anguish.
Phil does a fairly decent job here.. Its hard to cover Layne's vocals. But Phil's voice actually harmonizes with Jerry's decently. My one gripe is that he isn't hitting that note during the chorus like we're used to Layne doing. But he is getting older, maybe he could've gotten closer in his younger days. This collab makes me imagine what it would be like if Jerry and Dime played together..
Phil still has some of the great voice left on here. He never shoulda started smoking. Might still have some left. Sad. Still a great frontman, though.
Besnik Sadiku i think he did great on this myself. His voice doesn't have the range anymore.. Obviously.. And this song along with a bunch of pantera Songs are hard for anyone to hit that range and sustain it
***** Yeah, back then when he was younger, but I seriously doubt if he has that range now that he is pushing 50. That is true for most rock singers. Look at Robert Plant, or Rob Halford, they can't hit them high notes like that anymore, Some lose it earlier than others. Some like Paul Rodgers of Bad Company still have the range to sing most of their material. Paul Rodgers says that is because he belives that singing way high, or with to much gravel in your voice will make you loose it quicker-and he took care of himself during his career, he never had a major alcohol or drug problem, he didn't smoke, and he exercised. I think there is some truth in that personally. Because he is over 60, look good for his age, and still can sing. A lot of rock stars end up partying themselves to an early grave.
Well he does not hit every note in the right way, bit its true, his voice is fucked up today, really sad man. he was a fuckin beast with pantera, but i think he still has it today, not that much as in the past but he still has it. saw him 2 times live last year with down and the illegals and both were great!.for me phil is still a badass man and always will be!.
I'm one of the biggest AIC fans ever and this is absolutely straight up bad ass. He's feeling it, he knows it and respects it. His vibe all up in it, freaking fantastic!!
Dirt Cobain no is not? Phil was off key the whole time. James did great, only problem were the high notes which he tried to sing instead of scream. This sounds off.
Layne is actually smiling now, after horrid efforts from other prominent vocalists like james, one person does justice to the song.I see a lot of similarities in them, both had it all, lose all due to addiction and sang about their inner demons, tortured soul so its not a surprise to me that Phil will sing this song from heart while he is no match to Layne's skill(Layne to me is in top 3 rock n roll music ever had, with Chris Cornell and Freddy)he will sound good cause it is honest to the core.Andrew ,Layne and Starr is having a beer and saying "Good job Philly".Dime would join in the conversation with a pint and a dive-bomb.
people complain about DuVall yet if Phil would have been picked I would not have liked it at all. Least William actually is a good fit for Jerry's vocals.
GrakAttack nah, you have to at least be able to harmonize against Jerry's vocals. Originality comes second when you're trying to keep the bands sound intact. Which they were, my whole point is I see why Jerry decided on DuVall.
You can tell Phill REALLY didn't want to screw up this song because he keeps clutching his in ear monitor. The end result is a solid performance!
Are you tone def? He should have just sceamed the whole song. Shit i say
True that
THE SITE it's shit
Actually I think he isnt wearing a monitor so he is clocking his ear to actually hear his own voice.

First time watch here, this is so friggin' cool. Phil suits the song very well, splendid performance!
Los 90's en algo más de tres minutos.
PD: esa canción merece hasta el Nobel de la paz
The Only Phil Anselmo 👑
0:15 "That nobody is John Wick on drums."
Best performance. Hands down. I never thought that anyone realistically do what he did but he did it!
hay muchas personas diciendo que phil lo hizo mal , pero comparado con james hetfield lo hizo 100 veces mejor
Definitivamente es la mejor interpretación de would y no lo hizo mal para nada es su estilo y punto los demás esta hablando segada y media
Phil got a incredible range back then like Mike Patton. He could scream, yell, rap and sing really great. Fucking amazing seeing Alice, Duff and Phil together....
The other guitarrist, is he Duff Mckagan?
Carlos Periañez yes
Yep!
Amazing how this was in 2006 and first time Phil performed since 2003 after his physical therapy and stuff. Legendary man🤘🏼💯👊🏼
No one else was available so they asked him to Phil in...
He was trying VERY hard to match Layne in those ear monitors, I promise you. His concentration was do or die. He did.
Andrea Pirlo is the drummer!! D=
Phil´s vocal performance is awesome here! When was this?
well, he sported the same style in the diary of a mad band, wich was in 2006, so around there I guess
I think most of us here agree with you. I bet Jerry Cantrell was pretty impressed with Phil's performance too:)
Phil has Massive vocal range and power. He did a great job controlling it and belting this song out!!
Phil still has some of the great voice left on here. He never shoulda started smoking. Might still have some left. Sad. Still a great frontman, though.
Even on Reinventing the Steel gives you goose bumps, ridiculously good and original voice. Don't know any alike.
7rixee I can only agree. his vocals on goddamn electric, revolution is my name... so sick... maybe the best..
Those harmonizing vocals with Jerry sound great. I would love to see them do this again.
phil sounds terrible in my opinion.
his voice is on top (my opinion) has a heavy voice that keeps him up up upppp
Besnik Sadiku i think he did great on this myself. His voice doesn't have the range anymore.. Obviously.. And this song along with a bunch of pantera Songs are hard for anyone to hit that range and sustain it
Corz Illa Listen to the James Hetfield version of this song-that's terrible!
*****
Yeah, back then when he was younger, but I seriously doubt if he has that range now that he is pushing 50. That is true for most rock singers. Look at Robert Plant, or Rob Halford,
they can't hit them high notes like that anymore, Some lose it earlier than others.
Some like Paul Rodgers of Bad Company
still have the range to sing most of their material. Paul Rodgers says that is because
he belives that singing way high, or with to much gravel in your voice will make you loose it quicker-and he took care of himself during his career, he never had a major alcohol or
drug problem, he didn't smoke, and he exercised. I think there is some truth in that
personally.
I appreciate this. But Phil seems to be singing it a little slow
yeah , he was still recovering from his back surgery and didnt sang as good as he wanted
Mrcrap555 kinda yeah. But still it was awesome and better than hetfields version.
Dirt Cobain no is not?
Phil was off key the whole time. James did great, only problem were the high notes which he tried to sing instead of scream. This sounds off.
@@H.E.M. hes fucked up
Layne is actually smiling now, after horrid efforts from other prominent vocalists like james, one person does justice to the song.I see a lot of similarities in them, both had it all, lose all due to addiction and sang about their inner demons, tortured soul so its not a surprise to me that Phil will sing this song from heart while he is no match to Layne's skill(Layne to me is in top 3 rock n roll music ever had, with Chris Cornell and Freddy)he will sound good cause it is honest to the core.Andrew ,Layne and Starr is having a beer and saying "Good job Philly".Dime would join in the conversation with a pint and a dive-bomb.
people complain about DuVall yet if Phil would have been picked I would not have liked it at all. Least William actually is a good fit for Jerry's vocals.
Agreed this version sucks I like Phil but he butchered this
Phantom Limb He's not Layne. He has his own style
GrakAttack exactly, and his style is not AiC.
It's not about matching the style of the band. It's about originality
GrakAttack nah, you have to at least be able to harmonize against Jerry's vocals. Originality comes second when you're trying to keep the bands sound intact. Which they were, my whole point is I see why Jerry decided on DuVall.
Best vocal performance of this song since Layne passed, hands down. Thanks Philip
Am I the only one who thought this kicked ass? Fuckin crazy comments.
i did just cus its phil
