I still think it's kinda sad that they removed the option to give your Drake a Swim Speed and Waterbreathing as part of the Bond of Fang And Scale (Level 7 Ability)
I don't know why they removed it as they showed it in the Preview for D&D Celebration.
@@SquIDGAmiG62 It might have been to not step on the toes of the new Beast Master Primal Companion option from Tasha's? Like maybe they didn't want to give this summon everything, because otherwise why play Beastmaster? That's the only reason I can think of!
Fair enough, although I was looking forward to playing a sea dragon DrakeWarden for a Saltmarsh Campaign coming up soon.
Love the content by the way, your enthusiasm is quite infectious.
@@SquIDGAmiG62 Well, ask your DM. Maybe they're generous enough to still allow it? 🤷
Hexblade dip would break this class even further than it already is. No?
Imagine how awesome would playing a kobold with this subclass be. Extra points if the DM lets you fly on the dragon when it's medium size, because kobolds are small
Yeah! Thought the same!
I was thinking the exact same thing. A kobold with any kind of summon is amazing because of pack tactics.
Saaaaaame
Just need an exotic saddle, mastiffs are medium, so its RAW that it can be done
This is exactly what one of the players in my campaign is doing lol
Wizards of the Coast: “Hey guys, we just developed a new ranger! This one gets a dragon which is immune to one kind of damage, has an AOE attack, and in later levels you can fly on…”
Beastmaster: *flips table* “WHY DO YOU HATE ME!”
An that’s after the buffs in Tasha’s lol.
Beastmaster has more flexibility though.
@@robertbeach71 Absolutely, a beastmaster's animal companion does have more flexibility than a drakewarden's dragon. For example, the beastmaster's companion can... um.. swim.
@@ShamusOFox The drake can be given a swimming speed instead of a flying speed( your choice) so yeah.
There are also more beast master utility by having a companion that isn’t a giant fire breathing fuck you to sneak and on second thought yeah they really won’t give beast master a leg to stand on
I dont know if you've done this before but a relatively funny way to counter spellcasters is with the 14th level illusionist wizards ability that could let you make an illusion real for a minute. If you create an illusion of the enemy spellcaster wearing armor they arent proficient in then they can no longer cast spells.
That's hilarious I'll definitely make that! There's so much you can do with that ability, I shy away from making combos about it because it feels too easy to be like "make a bridge, run across, then make it fake". This is both genius and hilarious and is definitely worth making, thanks!
...
Good thing I'm playing a Forge cleric then
@@DnDShorts other things you can do with that ability: 1) incase the enemies legs/ wings in sold metal to stop the from moving. 2) put soft foam around there weppons so they deal less damage. 3) incases there arms in sold metal so they can't attack. 4) put a metal chain around there neck to stop them from breathing. 5) make tnt. 6) make a nuke. 7) drop a block of sold metal on there head. All of these can be done with the first level spell silent image.
@@matan8074 None of those are supported by game mechanics, though. It's entirely up to the DM to either allow or disallow the effects.
@@backonlazer791 have you read the illusionists abilities?
I quite literally bought this and immediately made a Drakewarden Kalashtar hybrid where the dream spirit manifests into a Drake. Now I just need a DM to take the bait.
oh shoot thats actually a really awesome concept..... might yoink that for a future character of mine...
One simple idea I had already was a kobold who just stole the egg and is now best friends
I had an idea of a young dracolich who’s phylactory you are holding hostage. This could also raise the opportunity for levels in warlock if anyone thinks of using it
Here my Italian drakwarden ranger, Mario and his drake, Yoshi!
“Hey guys, wanna role play as Eragon?”
“Sure! What’s the build?”
“First, you go into Ranger-“
“And like that, you lost me”
Yeah, but rangers match eragon perfect, especially if your dm let’s you take/make some spells to match what he could do.
Ranger is much better now though
@@mysterkr5495
True. Just playing along with the stereotype
@@couragew6260 xD nah I feel you
thats actually a perfect idea I didnt think of this
Getting a pet dungeon is easy. Tame a mimic, feed it whatever your party kills, and once it gets big enough have it burrow underground and make itself into a literal dungeon. Drakewarden and Dungeonwarden rangers in one party. Mission accomplished.
Super easy... barley an inconvenience.
@@wittyjoker4631getting a pet mimic is tight!
@@scarlet1508 wow wow wow... ... ... ... ..wow.
Anyone else living through your childhood Eragon fantasy? 😂
Yeah dude. Was my favorite book earlier
I playtested the ranger, sadly only to level 6 but specificallyto play an eragon character...
But I loved every moment of it. I had a wizard who helped enlarge it for me and loved every moment of it.
Really felt like Eragon while playing it
Im right with you
@@jamescrawford8538 I panicked for a sec, thought your first name was Jeremy 😅
It’s a shame we don’t have a Fireball spell so we can yell out “Brisingr!”
what the beast master should have been all along 🧡
I like the Tasha's beastmaster, but this is a really good addition as well.
@@malmasterson3890 Agreed, Tasha's beast master is fantastic, been having a blast with it. All of the new 'companion' mechanics all work very similar now too, just with different abilities and buffs/bonuses. Tasha's BM, Drakewarden, all the new summon spells from Tasha's, etc.
I'm really loving the Feywild Ranger. I took the Entertainer background, and went 4 levels in Rogue to Scout subclass. I now have expertise in 5 abilities plus my wisdom and charisma to charisma based abilities... I can persuade, deceive, and intimidate, stealth, acrobat like a boss while still doing survival, nature, and perception amazingly.
I actually did the same! I threw in a little trickery cleric for more spells and a little more diversety however
Imagine if Travis' character for C3 is this. I would die on the spot
I hope someone uses Summon Draconic Spirit once they get access to 5th level spells.
Fortunately, you yet live
Lmao
My favourite DnD channel around rn!
Even against campaigns I'm following, your content is giving off that constant quick dopamine high i need and making my dnd plays much jammier! Thanks dude 👊🏽
It's not just a big puppy. It's a big, scaly, talking puppy. Kind of reminds me of my Gazer Familiar, but the Drake's like a Golden Retriever and the Gazer was like a grumpy Bulldog.
I think the flight comes in online way to late.
Personally I'd up the size by one category for each stage.
Medium at 3rd, large at 7th (and allow mounted flight), and huge at 15th (allow for multiple passengers)
At 7th level you can get your Drake to grapple you to be able to "fly"
@@xogdo5260 since you and it are still the same size, it can drag you, but I am unware of any rule where it can now carry you. The closest rule i can think of that shows this mindset, the arakokra can-t fly with medium or heavy armor either due to weight or being hindered, so I generally rule that a flying medium PC can't fly with a medium PC. but for roleplay they can maybe catch an ally while they are falling to their death, and then slowly descend to the ground, but not ascend as the weight is to high, and they are too awkward.
Rules as intended you are definitely not supposed to be able to fly with the drake, but if the players want to be imaginative then a few things might be possible. maybe a reduce spell? I understand if a different DM rules otherwise, but for me i am rules as intended, and its clear the Companion is not supposed to be ablet to carry its rider normally, especially not in a way that fits in combat. I do think they should have ultitlity and out of combat problem solving though.
@@aaronwilliams8887 Laughs in Halfling (Small creature)

Paladin Summon Greater Steed parity
Pet dungeon . . .Labyrinth Warlock: A sapient demi-plane has chosen you as it's steward.
Honestly a dungeon building subclass of an artificer could be really cool. Like you get to summon maritals for free and can build whatever you like as but it takes time.
You could build a 100 room dungeon as your party’s base of operations and watch as the dm tries to harm you only to run into all of YOUR traps as he tries to reach you. I would play the shit out of that
Awesome video man. Loving your coverage of new content! A lot going on at the moment.
Also, i'm loving the adventure you gave out in your last video !!!
I appreciate the humor and entertainment you provide in here vids, you make it fun to learn about these newer subclasses!
I super appreciate your videos and the comedy in them! It makes my day daydreaming about building characters around your crazy, awesome, gamebreaking ideas!
Honestly I feel like this is just wizard of the coast making it up for Ranger so now people will actually play the class
Getting a “pet dungeon” is being a level 11 Wizard and casting Guards and Wards over a building every day for a while, and using Glyph of Warding cast at 5th level within it to cast Conjure Elemental or Animate Objects whenever enemies set off the traps.
This is ridiculous. I love it.
Ask your druid friend to grow some trees into the shape of a building. Guards and ward the fuck out of it. Awaken said trees. Profit?
or... be a druid and cast druid grove?
So happy I found this video! Gives me some amazing ideas for my Ranger, who I'm planning on doing Drakewarden when I get to that level. And since I'm playing an Aaracokra, this will be super over powered with what ideas I've got now!
Small error you made on the level 7 ability, it displays piercing damage when in fact the drake deals it’s chosen elements extra damage
I started to think this class was just good. Damage resistances, and immunities are nice, but the damage was bad. I didn’t even think about basically having a long range extra action, or working with the party to get better results. Great vid.
who cares about damage when you can summon a dragon
@@ceiliannbaldwin5592 also it's bonus action damage... So you basically get 3 attacks as a ranger after level 5
Even if the damage was bad your party has a huge wall to block any elemental attack did the dragon just blast fire at the wizard have your dragon ready a action to block that attack for 0 damage
Seems like this is the dragoon class, I'd just recommend being a haregone for its jump damage and lowered fall damage.
Think about this, to ability to ride on your companion is based on how big it has grown to. With a single level in wizard, sorcerer or artificer and a high enough real life "persuasion roll" on the DM, you can mount up as early as level 4. Just cast "Enlarge/Reduce" on your Drake Companion.
I dont know about optimal but for roleplay, multiclassing into necromancy wizard with this would sound pretty fun.
Riding a dragon at the head of a skeleton army? Reflavoring the dragon as some kind of reanimated or composite beast?
That or just being a necromancer trying to create a dracolich that's under their control
The grappling dragon friend can combine the wall of fire bit with the cheese grater strategy from your other video. The Ranger can concentrate on Spike Growth themselves.
Wouldnt the fire burn the spike growth?
@@bakedpotato7201 Nope. For comparison, you can look at Web; in the text for the spell, it mentions that the web is flammable. Spike Growth doesn't have that.
But won’t the dragon take damage from spike growth?
@@SmollerRadish Not if the dragon is flying over it. Like Ridley grinding victims across the floor.
WotC when making the Drakewarden:
“Hey, you know the beast master subclass we made a while back?”
“Yeah, the one that allows you to have some animal that helps you out.”
“What if we replace that chosen animal.. with a dragon?”
Great video! I'm glad to have a great new sub class for a class that needed a win! Now if they would only do that for the Monk...
Ahh yes, the "other subclass". We don't talk about that one
As a BM hunter fan that has felt underpowered. This is amazing. If i ever get to step out form the DM screen and play this will be what I play. Well done.
That f***ing "we win" ..I'm dead🤣💀
It can't fly while you RIDE it. But can it fly while it CARRIES you? Sitting on its back vs hanging in its claws.
Honestly I love to combo this with the Samurai Elven Accuracy Sharp Shooter combo. Just use your dragon as a barricade while you pelt your enemies with arrows from afar. For other feats I prefer Metallic Gift and Mobile. If you are having your dragon be a front liner it is good to have some extra movement speed, and if you are fighting side by side, it is good to be able to give a little boost to your dragon's AC.
Just completed my first campaign (Curse of Strahd) and we're about to start our next one and the DM suggested I go with the Dragonborn ranger drakewarden. Really looking forward to this next adventure.
I am literally setting up this class for my first campaign ever.
Going into my campaign as a half dragon fairy with a breath skill that matches the dragon that im an half dragon with extra breath for a d4 and one of the draconic gifts as a passive makes this class for me so exciting
yes, best ranger subclass. As a ranger main who often plays dragonborns because I like dragons, this class is perfect for me
If you buy chain barding for the dragon you can have someone cast heat metal on the armor and then have your fire immune dragon grapple people and they take the damage. Similar to wall of fire but lower level. Also, if you have two casters you can just do both and watch your scaly little Hague violation melt through enemies
ohhh thats a GREAT IDEAAA
That ad hook was god-like
Honestly, in my campaigns I would scale up the damage of the drake every few levels, to keep it balanced with the party. Not sure by how much, as I mostly do that type of stuff when I see something start to get less useful damagewise
When the updated beastmaster came out in Tasha's I batted around the idea of a kobold with a drake (beast of the land) or little dragon (beast of the skies) that was a naive member of the cult of the dragon with no understanding of their actual goals. Now Fizban's come along & said "Here's the subclass you want."
Just came across your channel! I love your editing style!
My daughter has been playing a tiefling drakewarden from UA for a year or so and loving it.
This sounds amazing
Hellyeah, I'm loving the first usable Ranger class
The kobold ranger in the game I'm running picked this and with pack tactics now has advantage on most shots with her longbow
Me skipping to the tactics section right away and being greeted with "FUCK YEAH IT IS"
seing toothless mercilessly drag a koblod through a wall of fire was... interesting
Love it 😀 and great channel bro keep it up
Drakewarden married to an illusion Wizard with Mansion and Guards and Wards gets you your pet dungeons and dragons at once
I'm currently playing a Drakewarden/bard it's amazing
title alone literally sounds like Eragon from Inheritance
Give your dragon bro a wand of fireballs, and tell it to fly around the battlefield and shoot at any target you call out. Makeshift predator drone.
You had me sold at "artichokes"
hyped for the dungeon ranger
Hello, my name is consistent damage output.
Any enemy that only deals one damage type instantly becomes a nonthreat and you can spend your entire turn pommeling it arrows.
Awesome video
As someone who is currently playing a Drake Warden Ranger, I promise you it is just as fun as it sounds.
I just want to ride it and use a lance so I can live my dragonlance fantasies!
The dragon can also take the help action, giving you advantage on, I dunno, a sharpshooter attack
I'd rather use natures veil as a BA, let the Drake Dodge. Still get the advantage and have both my Drake and me be disadvantage to attack.
RAW, you can actually fly as soon as it gains a flight speed. You can have your dragon grapple you because it’s at the same height as you.
Huh so you can basically use your dragon as a glider although you may have to make checks to not go unconscious
it states in the book that it has 5+ 5x5 lv HP but also in brackets it can have your level x 10d HP dice
you could also add cons bonus to its hp per level so it doesnt seem to be a shitty pet
Jesus Christ, that sounds pretty good damage
@@mariocolina3621 nah thats just his hit points, but for damage wise, like he said, juste combine spells with the creature, change the terrain around it to bring out the best in it
I made a dragonborn drak warden last night it was awesome!😈🤘😎
My favorite subclass is the Horizon Walker. I know it's not the best mechanically but it can have so much flavor added. Plus being my first character I played a whole campaign as helps a bit
love tha sub class
now get the book
Dnd shorts show us a good multiclass combo with a dragon mount 💪
Finally the Dragon Chef dream shall be possible..
There’s also feats to add. Mounted Combatant is obviously gonna help a lot here. Also, you can combine that with Sharpshooter to be able to go around and provide a lot of good cover.
Also your ability scores don’t really matter your dragon has pretty good ax and high health so it can tank for you a few hits not counting it’s immunity and the resistances it can give you so you can pick up feats and max out dex and be fine
Ok but here me out: Architect Artificer.
It would revolve around building structures and making traps or Dungeons a dungeon based class like this will really complete DND
Can't wait for your DM to reveal dragon eggs to your party and let you raise them up and train the babies? Well, pish tosh to your DM. Just become a Drakewarden and win the game! No longer will your story be dependent on the others at the table. Cuz fuck those party poopers anyway.
"Falcor, this is wonderful !!!!"
So what I'm saying is: DMs, you did this! More ponies for prizes. Or who knows what else we might see? Hoow bout a Wizard subclass that wrangles a kirin? Or maybe a cleric that rides humanoids/undead with a tiny spectral saddle. "Embargo ON!"
Muilticlass idea; take this subclass and take three levels of blood hunter, take the order of the lycan. A werewolf going into battle while riding a dragon, I don't think anything could top that.
Thanks to this video my first character is going to be a goblin with a comically large chicken
I want it. I love dragons and all my characters have Draconic.
time for some dragon riding
If you have a Dragonborn dragon ranger who took a 2 level dip into draconic sorcery multi class you essentially have three breath attacks with this combo. And if you chose 2 different dragon ancestors for both race and sorcerer class three different resistances.
I might play ranger just for this
Now this is cool
Rangers here we come
Dragon companion LETS GO!
There is also the new Dragonnel which Paladins can summon with Find Greater Steed.
See it says whenever you summon the drake you can choose it's essence so if you're taking that at face value it makes you super useful in every situation, bonus points if you know elemental weapon
In my sunday game I play the archived version of the Drake Warden so this was before the drake was the draconic spirit in the form of a drake and not how mine is an actual drake that I hatched and raised and can magically summon
So, I have a home brewed version of the beast master subclass which focuses on casting the summon beast spell and buffing those beasts.
Basically the beast companion ability is replaced with an ability which lets you cast the summon beast spell for free without concentration or verbal, somatic, or material components a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per long rest with the casting level equal to half your ranger level maximum of 9th level. At 7th level your summoned beast attacks become magical and benefit from your favored enemy or favored foe ability. At 11th level your summoned beasts gain an additional 10 HP per spell level above 2nd, and can be size small, medium, or large. At 15th level your beasts now benefit from the abilities of every type meaning you basically roll all the land, water, and air beast abilities into one super beast.
So, don't forget to summon a flaming sphere with the wall of fire for extra damage.
While the damage isn't crazy high or anything, don't forget that it's only a bonus action and that it can be anywhere on the battle field that you want it to (especially with a 40 foot movement speed). Ranger's usually only end up using their bonus action to cast spells, but with with Favored Foe from Tasha's now that's just part of an attack to replace Hunter's Mark (since it's concentration). That 1-3d6 + proficiency bonus is honestly not bad for a bonus action since normally that would require feats and fighting styles to be that effective with an offhand weapon (and you still only get 1 weapon damage die from those), plus this way you can either 2hand a weapon or use a shield and still get a bonus action attack.
This book is DELICIOUS.
Are you gonna cover way of the ascendant dragon at some point? its such an awesome subclass and id love to hear your opinion on it
My idea for a build with this: 16th level ranger (drakewarden) and 4th level fighter (arcane archer). Take bursting shot and shadow shot for the arcane archer. Use your bonus action to command the dragon to take the Dash action directly upwards. Make sure you have the sharpshooter feat and a longbow. You can now rain down areas that do AOE damage from up to 600 feet in the air without suffering any disadvantage, and even most ranged enemies will have trouble hitting you. It takes a few turns to set up, but the idea of a bomber plane ranger sounds fun to me.
The reason for shadow shot is that it makes the target unable to see further than I think 5ft if I recall, meaning that even if they have something that can reach you, there’s a good chance they won’t be able to see you to target you, or in some cases they will just be at disadvantage. Either way it makes you really hard to hit.
I have a ranger, and in the campaign, I made an series of underground passages and rooms, and it has monsters in it. I have a dungeon
5:50 - interact with an object and using a magical item are not the same thing. Using a magical item requires you Activate it with the Activate an item action. That's why drinking a magical potion takes your full action. You aren't just uncorking and downing. You need to activate the magic in the elixir with a few words or some kind of flourish. This is RAW in the PHB under Magical Items | Activating an item. It specifically says the line:
"If an item requires an action to activate, that action isn't a function of the Use an Object action, so a feature such as the rogue's Fast Hands can't be used to activate the item."
Basically, you're limited to the drake tossing a necklace of fireballs. But it definitely can't use a wand of magic missiles. As always, a DM may rule differently. But RAW/adventure league, you can't.
I love this
the bite dont suck when you realize that its a BONUS action attack on your part for 3d6 a great sword is only 2d6 and its melee dose become magical too
Having allowed my entire party to repeatedly collect and hatch dragon eggs until they had 3 white dragons, a black-red hybrid, and then one blue and one green, this is so much more balanced. When I finally let them have their dragons back I actually couldnt stop them lol. It was ridiculous. But useful for killing 5 abyssal princes and their armies in one giant battle
I apologize if this has already been asked. Just wanted to see if someone might be able to explain some of the mechanics behind the drake companion for a drake warden ranger. (And possibly site sources)
1) can you heal the summoned drake companion/ does it heal on a long rest?
2) does the drake companion get attacks of opportunity if the ranger hasn't commanded it to attack.
3) with an intelligence of 8 and the ability to think on its own with the ranger unconscious would it continue to attack the same target until it finished the job or does it have to be told every turn?
I was hoping for something a little more substantial than, "talk to the gm about it." I understand they get final say.
if you have the majic reality staff thingy, then yes, you do have a pet dungeon and dragon.
I fucking knew my DM was wrong saying my drake couldn't grapple!
Yey finally a usefull pet for my cavalier fighter!
Gotta dip at least 7 levels into the ranger - best early - for that to be worth it.
My next character is gonna be multiclassing this with a paladin to make a final fantasy style dragoon
I really think this book highlights who the new worst treated class is now. Poor monk... After getting my copy yesterday though I've been very pleased with everything else the book has to offer. Love to see the gem dragons finally being brought to 5th edition.
It's a fantastic book yeah! Best one since Tasha's imho
Beastmaster ranger players (Including me) seeing the final nail in the coffin as there is a new subclass that gets a freaking dragon
