Battling with my ADHD and being overwhelmed with my stressful full time job makes things difficult sometimes but watching this video is just what I needed as a motivational boost.
I know that I eventually want to create an RPG game about shapeshifters. One where you go through a story and fight enemies and collect loot to get stronger and stronger for both your main form and your shapeshifter form. I haven’t seen a game like that yet and I know it’s something I would love to do as my eventual big future project. Just need to practice making smaller games first lol

110% agree with your point on the unique/weird gameplay. It's why I like playing indie MMOs; the devs usually don't feel bound by needing to appeal to a huge audience, and as a result a lot of fun, interesting things can be created.
I think I've mentioned this before, but I found Fantasy World, and as a result you and the rest of the Firith team, because I one day started trying to look up footage of Stick World Online since I had fond memories of it. Luckily for me, I think you'd tagged some of your trailer vids for FW with Stick World so I found them right away hahaha.

One of my favourite features of GameMaker is a little less obvious one: Packages.
Basically packages allows you to put any part of a project into a sort of zip file that can be extracted into other projects, which makes it easy to separate certain features that need backup and reuse code without cloning and moving project files.
I also love the structure of GML, it just feels far easier and quicker, and more readable than a lot other languages I’ve used, whilst still having a lot of functionality. And since it is a proprietary language, it feels super easy to make games with it without having to clash with language itself to build the game

hmm, I think an MMO that focuses on some form of randomization/RNG(random character designs, items, stats, worlds, etc...) would be cool. IDK if this is just me, but for most gamers today, getting different individual experiences in one game compared to others is something important, y'know what I mean?
Like an example of this is when your friend is talking about what cool item they got or what new unique monster you fought or what new build/strategy you created for unique situations is kind of a cool thing nowadays in gaming.

Also a fun fact: Scandux was supposed to be a runescape meets maplestory. The mechanic I used for shooting the bow was recycled from a game I made that was similar to angry birds. The reason the game was so glitchy is because I was super inexperienced with coding at the time. The inventory system was made with help from someone, I did not have a clue how it worked at the time. I ended up giving the project to Coollog who ran it for the last bit of time. At some point there was gonna be a Scandux remake with better graphics but I ended up giving up on making games due to mental health issues. Thanks for enjoying my game it really made my day seeing it on this video!

If you guys want a Roblox MMO game that perfectly describes what Goodgis is talking about, I highly recommend Hexaria. The gameplay focuses around getting cards which are attacks, creating decks out of said cards, and using them to fight on a hexagon grid map. The game is amazing and gets fairly frequent updates despite the small developer team. The game is amazing and has a wonderful community, as well as an amazingly advanced competitive community that is still very friendly. I highly recommend checking it out if you love Roblox and MMOs.

For a few months i have been thinking about a pseudo city building/ VRSocial MMO.. the concept i have in mind is that players get virtual zones or plots if land (of about 50 km^2 or more ) in which they build a city/town/environment (inside and outside) which can be uploaded to the servers and freely explored in VR, the city building can be done on desktop and exploration and socializing in VR.
Structures can be tagged as shops/clubs/homes or as under construction which will make the tagged building inaccessible and rise from the ground at realistic speeds ( 3 mtr per hour or so).
Now with unreal 5 engine this might be possible.
Sadly no coder and always have these wacky concept ideas :P.

I recall my first learning experience and having people tell me to avoid it, due to its complexity and "it won't be successful". However, by tackling the challenge you learn SO MUCH. That itself is reason enough and as a community we should be encouraging it more.

The problem is, we are not at a point where its all that feasible to make an indie MMORPG that can compete with the big names that have been our for years.
This is due to a lack of ways to overcome the resource differences of an indie VS a big company. Though, that is slowly changing. Bit it'll still be several decades before one can actually compete with the giants.

preach!! I've been thinking this same thing lately about how much fun I used to have in middle school playing runescape, and how different online games have become now .. people focus so much on graphics and giant beautiful maps and less about community and simple things which made games like runescape so much fun. It seems the novelty of meeting people online has largely been overshadowed by all of the innovation and beauty brought into modern games. that innovation is great obviously, but I have much nostalgia for those older, more 'simple' games.. but also to say runescape is 'simple', even in 2007 is probably clunky wording on my end. so much content

I played a lot of fable quest and other similar games around 2009 and really loved those. I haven’t really played any mmos recently though. The closest thing to an mmo I played recently was this idle gacha game called Aurora legend which is now discontinued in the west (I believe the Asian servers are still up). I do miss the the days of finding great communities and gameplay. I miss the days of playing clash of clans and knowing every individual person (at least by their online identity). The wholesome communities are definitely something I miss.

Yeah I suppose it all comes down to scope and what you perceive as a MMO experience. I say that as there are cloud hosting options as a lower scope alternative like Atavism that charge you $30 a month for up to 100 concurrent users, all the way up to $129 a month for up to 10,000 concurrent users(both are base subs).

I want to make a game similar to Minecraft but it's more of a hard survival MMO game. basically, you survive the night from a lot of types of mobs and bosses that try to break your base. but to progress, you need to fight dungeons to make it harder. if you fail to protect your base then you go back once. I also want it to be a multiplayer experience instead of a solo because with friends it brings more fun and enjoyment. I have other games in my mind that are huge than the call of duty. but for now, I'm trying to learn to code but it's too complicated.

Hey so I love your content and I looked back at that other MMO video that you did, and I have an idea to make enemies visible to everyone, (I know that you're done with fantasy world but it's an interesting idea in my opinion) which is to make a set of enemies that the player's game controls, then, the game sends the data of the enemies to the server which makes the enemies visible to all, also, this would encourage people to be more close as a community because there would be more enemies when more people joined. Just a thought, love your stuff.

"no barrier to entry". Right, because a subscription license totally isn't a barrier. I'm not saying that a piece of software shouldn't have a price tag, and GMS2 is a fantastic engine, but saying that there is not barrier is like saying there's no barrier to entry to having photoshop.
Personally, I prefer Godot right now, but that's because gdscript feels like lua which I am most familiar with. I know some C++ and enough C# to make a "hello world", but I just like gdscript's game dev focused features. I don't have enough experience with GML to know if I like it or not, but I know a lot of people do.

Lol, I feel like Runescape was a part of everyone’s childhood - was all we talked about for a bit. Would love to make a big multiplayer game, the more social side of games is really fun; the real life interactions as a result of a game helps bring people together. Personally, I would love to add a multiplayer racing aspect to my game I’m working on - Classy Train; but have no idea where to start for that side of the dev. Uploading dev logs for the game to this channel, so if I get that far I’ll post about it

I know this video is pretty old, I love the positivity though... in a sea of naysayers telling people all the reasons not to make a game... a little positivity goes a long way.
I would just say to anyone thinking of making even a small scale online game, think of how you plan to monetize it from the start because passion doesn't pay the bills, and eventually if you want your game to succeed long term you will need money to keep servers on, to pay people, etc.
