A few years ago I took classes in forensic sketching (the kind that police departments do). It was good basic information in learning to draw a variety of faces head on, but unfortunately we didn’t spend time on 1/4 or 3/4 views. It was really good to learn proportions, though. But one thing we did that was really fun and interesting was to draw a face just from someone else’s description of the person’s features - no reference photo. It was fun to draw the face based on the description, then see how it compared to the photo. I surprised myself that I did pretty well at it!

Thank you so much for this video! It's so helpful and inspiring! All the tips and tricks. And it's so relieving to see, that also great urban sketching artists (you are!) are in some portraits drawing not that good. Do you know that feeling, when you are on a concert and someone can play the guitar. And the drums. And the violin. And the flute! It's great, but sometimes I'm jealous and I think: do these people have to be geniuses in everything? Hahahaha!

I think it really depends on how you’re feeling. I had the same experience with the ups and downs.

I've been practicing cats and I did 2 one night at a drawing event...... the second one was horrifyingly bad and everyone who saw it was like oh you got better! Nope. Nope. I floundered.

It really helped to hear about your discovery of the ups and downs of progress. I get discouraged. Now i will just keep plodding along!

I love the faces you draw! You have a cool, distinctive style that I enjoy looking at. You've inspired me to try this challenge.

I love your folky style with faces. Now I suck at buildings and backgrounds and love doing faces so maybe I need to challenge myself this year. Thank you for sharing.

Same 😂. I actually have totally different style with landscapes vs portraits. My landscapes are very illustrative and my portraits are semi realistic.

Thanks for sharing, I've got similar fluctuating experience like WOW followed by OMG, and my faces goes skewed... still working on reference points to correct that.

For lots of faces, Google: This person does not exist
(thought I posted this but don't see it in the comments)

Hi Tara, can you pay monthly for that or do you have to pay annually. I got a bit scared off when I saw that it was annual - thank you 😅
