n54 life, scan tool saved the day, fortunately parked in driveway before shutting off, fan was zoomin & began to notice temps climbing abnormally high but turned off before overheating code, car never started back up… my hypothesis, jump starting the car beforehand caused my failure

This just happened to me at 65k, I got the red overheated light. After letting it cool down I drove it really slow home (luckily I was less than a mile away). Bought the water pump/thermostat kit off FCP Euro and installed it myself. No more issues!!!

Great video, and very helpful. My 2013 335i had only 37K, was still under extended warranty, when the cooling fan started running full blast just like you described. Took it to dealer, they said it was a sensor. Got it back, and it started happening again. Ironically, right after warranty expired. I'm so frustrated with the Dealer, here in San Francisco. There just terrible. Ended up having head gasket problems, etc.. Just a nightmare.. Today, the car has 48K on it..which is very low for 2013...Yet to have so many issues..What a true waste of time and money I have invested in this car..

My N54 twin turbo 2008 failed at 90k (seal went and motor rusted and locked), my 2007 328 no turbo went to 132k but the cooling pump communication error popped up using carly so I replaced it. Took it apart and all looked fine - electronics and motor seal. didn't do thermostat on either as I haven't ever had one fail on my many BMW's.

Excellent explanation, and exactly what I am experiencing with my 2011 E89 Z4 twin turbo. The sound you recorded of the failing pump was also identical to the sound mine was making. Sounded like an old wooden rocking chair creaking every few seconds and nothing flowing at the top of the reservoir. Now the fun begins on replacing that, and probably the thermostat while I am going that deep.

A common fault code with E9x is '2E85 Electric coolant pump, communication'. With this code the waterpump cannot communicate with the ECU. As a precaution the pump will run at maximum power when it can't communicate.
The waterpump should work quietly. In the case the pump is producing abnormal sound then it's probably better to replace it.

I have an 08 335xi coupe at 100,000 miles and my water pump didn't actually "fail" in the traditional way. The plastic housing decided to crack and leak coolant at a rapid rate. I replaced both the water pump and thermostat. It was not fun on an AWD model. The front sub-frame is a real pain in the ass. Following a detailed write-up i found it took me approx 3 hours to disassemble and 3 hours to put back together.

What i experienced is that my car would overheat then I’d turn the car off and on right away and it would be fine for hours even days and then it would get the message and I’d turn it on and off again, at the time I didn’t know but this is because the water pump kept failing and restarting the car forced the water pump on kinda like restarting your phone when it freezes

Honestly with these cars I’ve learned just replace all the fail points ahead of time. Even if there’s no signs of failure. You never know what parts have been used or abused, how many miles they have on them or not hat kind of miles which matter in most cases. Just replace it all slowly but surely and now you know all these parts are healthy and working and when the next replacement should take place. I replaced all my transmission solenoids, oil pan, trans pan/filter, every gasket I can think of for coolant, air, and oil. Valve cover and gasket, new upgraded radiator, aluminum intercooler and all aluminum piping. New fuel pumps and it’s essentially “ bullet proof. “ I say that sparingly because I’m on a custom tune maxing out my turbo 22psi and fuel lol so turbo will go any day now. But that’s also on the list to upgrade down the line ps2 with a s2 hpfp

Mine failed at 7000 I did hear the fan off and on, the oil temperature went up to 250 degrees. Not that you can do this, before I knew for sure the water pump was gone the car could only go 25 miles before it would go into limp mode.

The pump was working fine when the car was cold and it was flushing the fluid, but when it got to 90 degrees and hotter it stopped flushing the coolant and it just started blowing the fluid from the expansion vessel. Is it a problem with the water pump or is it something else? Also I've been seeing that the car starts to overheat and maybe it doesnt work properly.

Good day boss, now I have a 2006 e90, no overheating issues till I had a mechanic work on the oil filter housing because of leaks, everything done, took car out for a drive, after driving for 20 minutes or so, yellow temp light flashes, coolant leaking from the hose that goes into the oil filter housing, fixed and drove for another 35 minutes with no issue, third day, tried going out, after 10 minutes, yellow temp flashes again, pulled over, same leak reappeared. Changed hose, start car for 15 minutes, pump ran and after 15 minutes, yellow temp warning light reappeared with radiator fan cranked high, no leaks. Car cooled down, did self bleed and waterpump ran for over 14 minutes in self bleed mode. Once car is started after 15-18 minutes, temp light flashes, could that be the waterpump or something else? I don't wanna throw money away on another waterpump if that's not the issue.

' Just got an overheating light on my dash. less than 5k miles ago I had a service engine soon light with code p0128 saying my thermostat wasnt working properly. Replaced it and engine light went away and everything was solid. New coolant, no leaks whatsoever (left splash guard off and checked every day to make sure no leaks). After I did the thermostat and coolant I did the flush thing to burp all the air out, took like 10 mins but again everything was kosher. No idea why its overheating now, with no service engine light, only the over heating light. And after I got overheating light on dash I pulled over and stopped and let it cool off, had absolutely no coolant leaking out of reservoir. Any ideas? '

    Mine failed at 118K miles. 2011 E93 6spd.
Couple of weeks ago I was on a long trip (5k miles trip), just before the end of the trip I stared hearing the pump even after the car is locked. Then engine oil sensor started throwing errors ( unable to measure oil). I ignored and thought that the oil sensor is messed up and will take care of it after my trip. Finally one of the coolant hose cracked and waterpump also failed. Was stranded and had to repair in a local shop. The car was not overheating though.
I thought of replacing the pump before the trip but due to time constraints couldn't do it.

Now trying to put BMW 320 e90 with 105k miles on the clock on the road and one failure after another... still not derivable. Excessive oil leak caused cam chain to snap, now some sensors not working and today coolant leak ...hope is not overheating (aux el. water pump not working ...AC and ABS also) I had BMW 5 series e34 (1989year) and was good but BMW 3 series after 2000 is plastic crap.

This has just happened to me.
    Pump is intermittently failing.
I'm in the city, not sure if I can bring car home.

It's stupid with so much electronic not to let you warn that the pump is failing!

@@SimplyCarThings I connected a reader on OBD2 port and monitored the coolant temperature as I was driving back home. Apparently, there's a monitor you cab get to to show you coolant temp, but I couldn't find it.
It frustrates me that standard car has coolant temp, where this POS, I had to resort to reader sitting across my lap to let me know whether coolant is getting too hot.
Also, I realised there's no warning light to let you know if there's coolant loss happening.
You can loose the coolant, you aren't gonna know, you're gonna start overheating the engine you're not gonna know.
Only tell tale sign is the aircraft propeller that if it spins a little faster it's gonna start pulling the car forward.
My 1994 falcon had a warning light if there's a coolant loss detected in overflow bottle.
This thing packed with all over engineered electronics to the point of stupidity, doesn't have basic things to let you know in time before you damage your engine.
      That's just plain retarded!

So my pump was replaced 30,000 miles ago with a oem one and thermostat done by a BMW shop. I'm losing coolant but the pump still does the automatic bleed all the way through. I M not getting any codes until the coolant is low and its only one code. I don't think it the water pump I think I have a bad hose. Even when the coolant got low the cars temp didn't go below the center 120 mark. (Canadian car so it might read different than USA.)

Just got an overheating light on my dash. less than 5k miles ago I had a service engine soon light with code p0128 saying my thermostat wasnt working properly. Any ideas?

Mine went out in june. I took it apart to see what happen. There is a bushing that keeps the coolant from the fan motor. The shaft of the propellers eats away of this bushing. Once there is no more water seal it floods all the electronics in the water pump housing and shorts out. I learned that in Europe these watervpumps last for ever but not so in the USA. Also the new water pumps as of 2017 last 150,000 ish and most tote a life time replacement warranty. Remeber that blue coolant... Its made with silica I heard.

Your 4th test is wrong. That way which you show you activate Auxiliary coolant pump, not main one. E9x have 2 collant pumps. MAIN pump and AUXILIARY pump (little one), which is used for bleeding coolant system and for "REST" button, which will activate circulation for heating system even with engine off. These auxiliary pumps fail aswell, brushes :)
