Terrace House - Japan's Coziest Export

- Japanese television, much like the country itself, is often made out to be loud, colourful and absolutely bizarre. Terrace House is a beautiful outlier to that stereotype, a cozy and warm show that strives to bring a bit of reality back to reality TV. The premise is simple: men and women coming together in the hopes of finding friendship, romance, or even themselves.

Could you recommend what is the best season to watch for one’s first time watching Terrace House?
Is there a season that is substantially worse than the rest of the seasons?
I'd suggest starting with Boys and Girls in the City (mostly because it's how I started). The first season (Girls x Boys Next Door) is absolutely fantastic but it's quite hard to find it, whereas 'City' is all there on Netflix. I also really liked Opening New Doors.
Aloha State is substantially worse that the other seasons and I'd really recommend staying away until you've watched another season. It's fine, but it's not nearly as charming and I might not have carried on with the show if I'd started with that one (and it's full of really cringey moments in my opinion)
Yeah I'm dump
When I read your comment I thought you meant in which season you should watch this show (fall, summer etc.) and didn't realize what you actually meant until I read the comment from beyond ghibli
start with season 1 here tecchanhouse.wordpress.com/
Thanks man
Magnitude Reviews just watch whatever one you want, they are all litterally the same premise with different settings so it’s all your choice
"A reality show for people who hate reality shows"
we need a vietnamese version
I can vouch for that, australian reality tv is so forced and is just so uncomfortable too watch, but this was so easy too watch and such a chill vibe
I felt the exact same about this warm, cozy series that seemingly offered a genuine, "fly on the wall" look at real life. That illusion was shattered with the death of a beloved housemate, Hana Kimura. As devastating as her loss to this world (and to our hearts) was, evidenced communications from those close to her revealed the reality of this "reality show"; that producers would tell housemates how to act, often completely out of character and against their will, to forcibly induce drama. It disappoints me to say this, but at least american "reality" shows didn't overtly advertise that there was, "no script".
Unfortunately, I can no longer enjoy this show with the same sentiment you so eloquently express. Thanks for the memories though.
I absolutely love your writing and narrative. I definitely believe you're one of the most underrated RUclipsrs out there. From your voice to the editing to the way you present your videos as a whole, there's something incredibly charming about everything.
Keep doing what you do :)
This seems sadly out of date given what’s happened and revealed since Hana’s passing.
Beyond Ghibli or Beyond Anime, one thing is certain: my already endless watchlist is gonna get longer.
(Someone did sing the Japanese cover of Country Roads from Whisper of the Heart so idk if it's 100% beyond Ghibli but whatever xD)
"Not nearly as real as its label would suggest"
*shows a shot of Rikopin*
Me: *laughs internally*
"How are you so good at this ?"
"Well Im a professional "
the karuizawa season was SO RIDICULOUSLY GOOD
im still in love with tsubasa and sean i cant take it
yesss. Some people say it’s boring but I thought it’s one of the most heartwarming
“Stolen steak” 😂 aaaah, that meat incident!
I feel like there’s not enough attention for Terrace House on RUclips. Thanks for making this
I could listen to your voice for hours.
*Rest in Paradise Hana Kimura* 💕
I love hearing your sarcastic quips at the end of these videos, please never change. It was interesting to see you take a step back from the anime set, and put a reality on display, not a move I was expecting from you, but a welcome one none the less. Watching your videos never feels rushed or formulated and I feel refreshed after every take. I think you're doing a service to the people watching your videos little by little simply by slowly giving a vauge picture of the culture of Japan, which even to a seasoned anime fan (or maybe even more so to an anime fan) can come off wierd or even alien. I'd like to think I speak for lots of people when I say "I'm not sure how the Japanese interact or how their culture defines them" but as an American viewer in a time where our social values differ from person to person, I think I speak for far greater by saying "I'm not sure how people interact on a grand scale, nor how their culture defines them". All the best, and stay inside.
The beauty of boys and girls in the city stays with me still. The friendship between misaki, hansan and arman was one to remember. There was so much love, support and warmth in that season.
BeyondGhibli you're easily my favorite youtuber right now. I love the way you express shows and movies you enjoy and how you fit it perfectly in your videos. I always feel like there's a lesson to be learned at the end of each vid as well, in the end your videos always sooth my heart. So i just want to thank you, and don't stop making these!!
I still love Terrace House, I was even trying to write a proposal to Fuji TV to bring the show to Canada (Montréal, Toronto or Vancouver) in order to celebrate their recent 90 years of diplomatic relations. However that matter with Hana last year made me lose a LOT of respect for Fuji TV.
To those unaware, last year during the beginning of the pandemic there was a mixed Japanese girl named Hana who due to a certain incident got isolated in the show portrayed as the “bad guy”, and then they had to stop filming, she was bullied so much for the incident that she committed suicide, she was only 22.
The incident in question was one staged by Fuji TV.
Every reality that show has some levels of scripted events, TH is no difference, the “no script” tag line is just propaganda, so after many participants came forward revealing the nature of said incident, instead of apologizing they shrugged it off and denied, which lead to the shows cancellation and removal of the last episodes on Netflix.
That’s a big problem in Japanese society sometimes, it’s good to be non confrontational but this time they should have tackled the issue and apologize and saved face a little bit. Now they are cancelled indefinitely.
". . . and I'll feel a little bit excited for having done something I shouldn't have."
: P
I always appreciate the way you structure your videos to give a sense of the feeling that is explored in whatever show/movie/anime you’re taking about. Very glad I found your channel and excited for your next project.
your production quality is through the roof and to the point that I would expect this of a paid show. I commend you for making such wonderful videos. everything about them is soothing and nice to listen to even just in the background and the editing is candy to the eyes. keep on doing what you are doping because you need to gain the exposure that you deserve!
It's cozy until someone commit suicide because of toxic comments.
Unfortunately, recent Terrace House member and pro wrestler Hana Kimura has passed away at 22. All indications that the cause was suicide, stemming from online bullying, maybe as a result of situations and things she said while on Terrace House itself. Everyone keep her family in your prayers.
Reality tv fandom is absolute cancer, idk if this is the coziest reality tv show ever to come out of Japan this is still what it lead to. Hana Kimura was beloved in the joshi community and I've watched her in Stardom since 2017. :(
@@berugaslabor it's all good during earlier seasons until people threat them as freaking idols.
Kawaii Potatoes yeah celebrity/idol culture only has dark sides. Her mother has released some info on Twitter now how what went down behind the scenes when the infamous quarrel took place complete scumbags those people
These videos of yours made my watching experience so much better. Your calm steady, over all of the videos, voice is a treasure, there is nothing else to think about besides the setting you are presenting. I am sure your channel will keep on growing as even though it is presenting a subjective perspective it paints a very beautiful and valuable one. There are many movies that I have rewatched and enjoyed way more than on the first approach.
Terrace House understands reality TV, it's the only show that captures the same feeling as 90's real world episodes, where interesting younger people coming of age just had conversations and got to know each other.
you have so many quality recommendations! i hope i get to watch all of them in my lifetime. you also have so many quality videos, it's almost overwhelming in the best possible way, which means i have so many videos to watch. thank you!
Like usual, a very amazing video essay
Thanks for the hardwork
Looks like it really touched you, liked the way you described your feelings, awesome video man!
Thank you for putting in words (and images) most of the feelings I felt watching this movies and series. You make poetry, mate! It's always wonderful to watch your work! Thanks again :)
Great work as always...
You are the only person who has made me interested in checking out a reality show.
I am absolutely loving it! And thanks for Luna Lake! I feel like a kid on Christmas Day!
They are fantastic :D
I think this is the exact show I've been looking for for a while now. guess i'm watching all of it now.
I started watching Terrace House because of you and I want to say thank you for making me aware of this beautiful show. I enjoy every second of it
You are a great communicator in all your videos, including this one. I agree to every point you make and you described others I could not have expressed. Thank you
Very calm and soothing video! Will definitely check the show
ive been a fan of terrace house for about 6 years now, and im never bored, and always excited when a new episode comes out
Love your stuff!
I'll be honest, since watching 'Boys and Girls in the City' I've been nothing but a massive fan of this show. I hate reality shows that my family always try to recommend, but this was just one of those things I put on because I couldn't find anything else. It's fair to say, it's now my favourite show, it's feels so pure and humble. The cast are amazing and I love their banter in between the actions of the members of the house.
If you're not sure about it, then just give the first part of 'Boys and Girls in the City' a chance.
Love the intro! Also the rest of the video :D
Anime just gets more and more realistic looking.
I think I needed something like this right now
amazing review of the show. thank you
I clicked so quickly- I love your videos AND I love Terrace House.
You're the man dude. This video was beautiful.
Thanks to you now I'm hooked on Terrace House.
I finished watching this recently on your recommendation. Nothing truly beats the first season and its unfortunate knowing that there will probably never be another season again.
I loved this video and completely agree with it. I just discovered Terrace House last week and I'm obsessed
Very nice review
you gonna really make me start watching this again huh
Wow I've never heard of this. Thank you
Thanks for the video. Keep safe and stay well.
I liked this show a great deal, but after what happened, I absolutely can not watch it anymore.
This is my first time watching your video and I’m getting goosebumps just hearing your voice and enjoying the feel of this video. You’re awesome!
And I came here to watch reviews because I started watching it because some RUclipsrs recommended terrace house to get real world feel of Japanese language, but I hate reality shows. You telling me terrace house is a reality show for those who hate reality shows is FACTS!
A lot of my friends love Terrace House, and watch it, like you, religously, and I cannot fault anybody for doing so. I watched half a Season myself, and I felt myself falling in love with it's uniqe approach to reality TV, it's somberness and cozyness. But at some point I realized that while this is the only reality TV Show I ever liked, it's inherent voyerism felt even more insidious to me. The inhabitants of Terace House subject themselves to the judgement of the panel and the viewer and therefore to society in general and creates a feedback loop that engouracges behaviors that is being viewd as favourable by the Audience and therefore by proxy the society. Being shown the Mirror of a reaction of a general public might be often benign or even helpful to achive Insight in ones own worst qualities and possibly become a better Human being, it being broadcast on such a grand stage is a form of collectivist judgement that doesn't sit well with me.
I am so torn about this beatiful anomaly that is Terace House.
I’ve been avoiding reality tv for a long time. This essay made me reconsider watching Terrace House. Thank you.😊
I'm hooked!
Welp, you done it, I'm finally convinced to watch this.
rip Hana Kimura
binged one of the city ones a long time ago, but never finished it. IDK, I just kinda dropped it. Thanks for reminding me of this!
I signed up in the right channel for the right content. Thank you!
No way! New video!!
I hate reality TV shows but I absolutely love Terrace House.
gorgeous essay,, i'd totally send this to a friend who i'd recommend terrace house to
This is literally the best show on the television. I live and breathe for Terrace House.
Seamless, effortless, peerless. Shit's great dude, I'm actually bummed I don't have Netflix for once lol
I don't like reality show but you have advised so many great things on this channel that I will give it a try.
THE KING HAS RETURNED.
Yessssss. Exactly
The open doors season i think is the best, it has the most people crying everytime someone leaves or confesses emotions. I noticed most japanese men in the show finds it hard to convey their feelings or flirt physically with the ones they like. its probably bevcause of their culture or busy lifestyle
Great video as always. The only live action show from Japan I watch is Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories on Netflix. It's very heartwarming and charming. I think you'd like it too
I love that show! I watched the two seasons together with one of my room-mates, one episode per night, and it quickly became one of our favorite shows (Whenever I hear the intro I can't help but calm completely down). We are grown men in our early -and mid-30's, and E1S2 left us both sitting on the couch with tears in our eyes
could not agree more to the entire video
how do you do it? you always make me want to watch the thing you're reviewing!
this video alone made me almost cry what
I loveee Terrace house. I'm so happy I found it on Netflix lol
Really nice
“No script” Lol
Love the TH series. Great analysis :) where could i listen to the complete slow version of the TH opening theme?
It should be on discobible.com soon! I'll give Patrick another poke ;) it's such a lovely piece, it came out so much better than I hoped.
I have a recommendation if you like the Terrance House.
A small set, some very brilliant actors with uniquely amazing stories. When you put all this together what you get is a brilliant TV show called Tokyo Diner.
I hated Japanese Television before I tried Tokyo Diner.
Thank You
5:33 natsumi, perfect person to describe
hahaha so funny to use a song that Studio Ghibli used in Whisper Of The Heart! Ur a Genius
Joe, I wonder if Midnight Diner might be worth a video as well. With your takes on Mushishi and Terrace House, I feel Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories would make a great addition to your catalogue. A show that marries the calming beauty of self-contained episodes of Mushishi with the distinct authentic Japanese-ness of TH.
I'm sure you're already aware, but if not, do give it a try on Netflix. It's amazing, and the second season just very recently dropped after many years of waiting.
I love Midnight Diner. Going to watch this video to see how its received as there are a couple of Live Action shows I'd recommend if people are interested.
@@BeyondGhibli Definitely very interested :D
My favorite shows on netflix, hope the missing seasons of Midnight diner and Terrace house
will make their way onto there eventually.
Don't tease me with clips of Kamen Rider in your sizzles BG, because then I'm going to start hoping you'll include Toku in your channel one day. Otherwise, video was very warm and thoughtful as per usual, song choices also gave a nice inviting atmosphere.
Beyond anime is a pretty cool idea, and could be a nice series
Honestly, I love Terrace House. I've been watching Tokyo 2019-2020 and I've loving it so far. I know about Hana's death and I'm saddened by it, as anyone who watched the show would be.
The show feels human. It's about people and their relationships, their struggles and their motivation, and I love it because of it.
watching this show religiously, ever since I first stumbled upon it on netflix and I just can't wait for new episodes whenever I binged the current ones.
this show, to me, is just simply perfect television!
They brought back last air bender. Maybe he does exist.
2:30 yoooo AKBingo
Where can I listen the remix version of the soundtrack ?
It’s great!
I was wondering if you'd ever consider covering the short film "Garden of Words"
It's one of my favourite films. I'd love to hear your opinion on it.
It's also a favourite of mine! I've covered it twice on the channel before :) once in my first video, then a deeper look in my Shinkai video. Hope you enjoy!
@@BeyondGhibli Thanks for your reply! I'll definitely check those out!
I love the content, stay safe!
I'll feel ashamed, repentant... And a little bit excited for doing something I shouldn't have.
You made me laugh so much there :)
I have never heard of Terrace House, it sounds like the Japanese Real World? In any case this was another well done video.
glad you're not afraid to go beyond anime :)
Omg! I just recently found out about this and wanted to watch it. Which season would you recommend to start with? Also lovely video and editing :)
I would recommend Boys And Girls in the City, it's meant to be the starting point on Netflix and gives you a little context for the reaction panel element.
@@ashtonmackle4242 Definitely agree.
@@ashtonmackle4242 thank you sm, I will 💛
Where do I get the slow down version?
Anyone know the song at the beginning of the festival?
This man definitely deserves all the subscribers he is earning at a high rate. All his videos have a warm melancholic draw to them. His voice is enchanting too! I found him when he wasn't too high in subscribers and I can't wait for him to reach new heights!
Did this video start off differently before? Was it re-edited?
I wish I'd started watching Terrace House a long time ago. Maybe it's silly, but it's hard to get into it now after how fans bullied Hana Kimura
what's the song used after intro?
I've always stayed away from reality tv like it's the plague, tbh. I'm generally picky about media, and tend to avoid anything that is clearly a mediocre experience or won't educate or move me, and reality tv is often too exploitative on top of pointless. but this looks remarkably different and I appreciate the lack of loud fabricated drama. might give it a shot!
and it would be cool to see more videos like this from you! nothing wrong with diverging from the norm every now and then. :)
