    I had to rewatch this video, now, after having seen Groundhog Day...twice.
    Loved what you said about the play on words, of having fun with the dialogue and the lyrics--
    and "Stuck" is exceptionally funny--
    but something has to be said about the performance of "Hope" and "Night Goes On."
    The two times I saw the show, "Hope" had people laughing/clapping in the beginning because of the amazing staging, choreography--and, of course, Andy Karl's singing. But the laughing quickly tapered down when the audience realized the gravity of the song. And I thought it was a powerful moment in the musical. Act 1 was pretty much comedy, and although "Playing Nancy" kind of sets you up that things are about to be more serious, the emotional punch "Hope" delivers is just... It's breath-taking.
    And then "Night Goes On" comes on without a warning after the more hopeful "If I Had My Time Again" and "Everything About You (Reprise)." "Hope" has a great set up, but "Night Goes On" just suddenly happens, and you have no idea of the emotional gut-punch it's about to deliver. Again, the staging and the choreography of this song is just wow. But, this time, it's Minchin's lyrics that tips you over to an emotional free fall. Especially with the callback to Ned Ryerson's life insurance jingle that you kind of expect, but also don't.

    I feel like the idea of something being too perfect to adapt is exactly what plagued Amelie this season

    I once fell asleep during the afternoon and dreamed I got ready to go to school. When I woke up a few hours later I thought I had to get ready to go to school so I did just that. It wasn't until the moment I realised I had a deja vu that I realised it wasn't even time to go to school, it was a friday afternoon. Sorry for my english, I'm not a native speaker, haha.

    I quite like Groundhog Day; "Stuck" is my favorite (I have a weakness for good comedy songs) and Barrett Doss (Rita) has such a great voice. I hope she sticks around on Broadway. Can't wait to see their Tony performance!

    since we're talking about a movie to musical adaptation, I want to bring up Heathers. what the musical did was flesh out the characters and give them motives that you can really see. They also take the wierd parts from the movie and cut them. And what you said about recognizable movies and quotes, with heathers they use the quotes just right so it's more of an "eeeeeeeeeh" *finger guns* kind of thing

    • @demondollee
      @demondollee 5 лет назад

      I genuinely think the musical gave the characters too much of a backstory. You're not supposed to feel sorry for JD,you're not supposed to think he's just misunderstood and damaged. It's the same with Heather C. She's just a mean person,nothing else needs to be said about it. It also ruined the character of Veronica completely and emitted one of the most subtle yet important characters (Betty Finn).

    I'm honestly really desperate to this show of all of them, heck to see any Broadway show would be neat since I live in the UK, hopefully it comes back here soon, probably without the original cast though, just looks really good and apparently the staging for the song 'Hope' is incredible but anyway, great and informative video my friend

    'this musical comedian has found his place in musical theatre'... / 'early work of authors'... I mean I'm glad he's getting recognition for theatre writing now as well, but he's been working in musical theatre for decades. He's gone from musical theatre/theatre to comedy and then back to musical theatre. But anyway. In my extremely humble opinion, it was the best scoring of the year - the complexity and cohesion of it along with the witticisms and detail made it by far the best of the contenders. I understand it not winning best musical, but I will defend its score wholeheartedly.

    The thing you mentioned about the musical repetition is exactly what struck me when I heard Groundhog Day was getting adapted into a musical. How do you adapt the perfect repetition of scenes on stage in a medium that has to be performed every night rather than carefully filmed? How do you write your songs to be continuously reprise but in creative and interesting ways? The idea has so much potential and I'm glad to hear it mostly lived up to it.

    In regards to the "show must go on" situation: that's why I was apprehensive about DiCaprio winning an Oscar for The Revenant specifically. This suffer-for-your-art behavior is respectable, certainly, but is a tad irresponsible to encourage even unintentionally.

    What do you think about the placement of playing nancy? I feel like it was a kind of jarring 2nd act opener since Nancy wasn't super "important" in the first act. When I saw the show, I was a bit confused at the beginning of the number because I sort of forgot who Nancy was and thought maybe I missed something. I think Hope would have been a better opener but thats just my opinion.

    • @markweissglass5893
      @markweissglass5893 7 лет назад +3

      The point, as I read it, is that the form of the show is mirroring the message of the show. Groundhog Day ends up being (at least partially) about the importance of details. Over the eons he spends in this town, Phil learns to slow down, appreciate the elements he overlooked or had prejudgements around. So, after a first act with lots of elements, comedy, and clear protagonists, Minchin starts Act 2 with a deep look at a character that the audience likely hasn't paid much attention to and has almost certainly made judgements about.
      So yes, you did sort of forget who Nancy was. That was on purpose.

    • @SilvanaLTD
      @SilvanaLTD 7 лет назад +2

      Mark Robert Weissglass that's a good point. I felt like it was there for a reason, but I just missed it. Also I definitely need to listen to the album all the way through and see how the experience is then. Most of the songs I've only heard when I saw the show.

    • @SecondValveSteam
      @SecondValveSteam 7 лет назад +1

      Songs like 'Playing Nancy' and 'Night Will Come' exist to remind the audience the show isn't all about Phil, in the same way that Phil isn't all about Phil. Its a very clever choice, and apparently was juggled around a bit, but it works.
