    43:00 I have a lot of respect for Shayne here. He picked up on tones of mental instability in that last story, and because of the great connection this entire group has, in his own way, I think he was kind of warning Damien and Amanda to be careful about the humor they use towards the man in the story (who is, as Shayne put it, clearly unwell). I love this channel so damn much.

    Brain tumors are really scary. My grandmother had a lot of health issues towards the end of her life, mostly cancer related. When i was 14 my family went on vacation and when we came back a week later she was staring at walls and unable to speak full sentences. She got diagnosed and the tumor was removed. She went back to same old grandma after she got it removed, like a switch flipped. So insane.

      My aunt was a roving psycho b1tch for years, she was so bad she felt more like a specter or monster than a human. Then she'd terrorize us about doctors wanting to remove her brain by conspiracy of us (half of us were children 💀). Then she turns up her old somewhat lazy charming phlegmatic self cracking jokes about that tumor and crazy years _still bandaged from surgery._ Sheesh, the change was instant.

      My stomach dropped. When I finally got medicated for adult dx adhd this last year or year and a half, the medicine, or perhaps my brain not knowing what to do with all the dopamine, gave me hallucinations while waking, where I can be up, moving around, and know that I'm awake, but some dream or nightmare image follows me across, like my big gallon water jug on my nightstand spontaneously cracking, water rushing out causing me to shove my hand firmly against it and rush into the bathroom to not find any cracks or leaked water, knowing that I saw and felt the water on my nightstand, which was never actually there. Or the scary shadow man who emerged from out of my turned off tv screen, etc. I missed my stimulant med Thursday b/c I was recovering from a double vaccine (bad idea, feels garbage) and I slept for 16 hrs straight, so when I resumed the meds on Friday I guess that was enough fluctuation to bring on another hallucination last night. Seeing things in your waking state, knowing that you are awake, but being unable to confirm for yourself that what you are experiencing is or isn't real is so terrifying.
      I hope that OP is able to get treatment and recover.

      It may have even caused memories to cross; my aunts brain tumors did a major number on her. I know there were times she would be on the first floor of her house, go up to the second floor and insist that she was supposed to be in my grandma's home that she grew up. Her brain would suddenly convince her she was supposed to be at my grandma's but the layout was switched because she was actually in her own home.

      Sounds like the person's brain got some wires crossed and merged two placed in the memory banks.
      Our brain stores thing like boxes for easy access and it's pretty simple for those boxes to get mixed up even for a healthy brain.
      You know that feeling when you have taken the same trip to work 500 times and they all blur together? At this point probably don't even register the individual moments of the trip... That's also what allows us to do repetitive tasks without consciously remembering each instance of the task being performed. They are all filed under "the task" and more specific information is buried much deeper

      @@JCWM2 It happens both for neurological and some psychological problems. Neurological you can count the effects of CO poisoning, stroke, epilepsy, concussion or dementia. Some severe types of malnutrition or poisoning (ie lead/mercury) can also cause it.
      Psychological any psychotic disorder applies. It can be an effect of severe sleep deprivation, especially if someone uses stimulants to stay up (be it caffeine or adderall). There's dissociative/fuge disorders that can cause such an isolated change in otherwise functional memory.
      In class (psych major) we covered a case with isolated replaced memories like OP described. In his case he visited his childhood home and suddenly there was a basement. He remembered a regular wall where the basement door was. His mom and anyone who'd visit said the basement was always there. He tried to prove it was new with childhood pictures. But suddenly a basement door could be seen in the background.
      After a lot of tests and therapy he went on a guided visit to the basement. When he was there he remembered that his father "mistreated" him there as a young child. He most likely regained knowledge of the basement existing because his oldest son reached the age he was when it happened. Brains are way more breakable than we realize.

I’ve had entire conversations made up where I have bought stuff for work because I remember hearing I would need to, only for everyone to say no one said that. & always lose common words for things. the brain is a freaky thing to have betray you especially when you’re young and are told it’s just anxiety!

    • @cats1970
      @cats1970 Месяц назад +3

      I've got some type of brain issue but they're not sure what, only that I've had it as long as I remember (early childhood) and it seems stable. So I'm diagnosed with ADD but it's not quite right. My psychiatrist agrees that my memory is too bad, it's almost impossible to follow travel direction and not get lost, I deal with dissociation on and off. And they're not sure if the hypnagogic/hypnopompic hallucinations (right before/after sleeping) are related.
      So in short: I so relate to your experiences. False memories are a bitch in so many ways. To me most frustrating is most people assume I misremembered regardless of what happened. About 1 in 5 times they messed up and nobody anticipated it because it must be the one funky brain in the room being weird! I'm not surprised OP had a brain tumor but I desperately hope it was treatable. Knowing is the first step so at least they knew what happened in the end.

    The first story was a massive hit for me. I lost my father to an almost decade long battle with reaccuring brain tumors. He didn’t know who i was most of the time bc he couldn’t remember anything past my sister being born. So he’d always randomly get confused/aggressive because he couldn’t find his family(he couldn’t remember him and my mom split up, that any of my sisters were grown now), my nannie had a massive face surgery after an accident several decades ago and my dad wouldn’t be able to remember her bc her face looks different than what he was able to remember. It was the hardest thing Ive went through

      Small silly story of positivity about my dad: Despite the tumors and awful memory loss, at my brother’s graduation party he got up to the karaoke machine and sang the entirety of the song “Go Johnny, Go”. I couldn’t stop laughing and crying. I was so happy to see him enjoying himself and remembering something he loved, but it was so funny to me that out of everything he couldn’t remember he remembered that gosh darn song. You were the biggest goofball and i try every day to be as funny as you. I love you so much dad, and i miss you more than words will ever explain.

    That first story reminded me of the time I was talking to my sister on the top floor of our house, and when I went to the bottom floor to use the bathroom, she walked out of the kitchen. She didn't pass by me on the stairs, and we had no other way of getting from the top floor to the kitchen. It was also an old house so if she had walked down the stairs behind me, the steps would've been creaking super loud. When I asked her how she'd gotten down so fast without me noticing, she had no idea what I was talking about. I remember walking around the rest of the day feeling super disoriented and confused. I was only six, so everyone thought I was just making things up, but I swear to god it happened. I've had a few other similar experiences with doors leading to rooms they didn't use to, exits in those McDonald's play tunnels disappearing and then reappearing, and even a complete neighborhood I used to walk through to get to school that suddenly stopped being there. Eventually, I had scans done and met with a few doctors, but nothing wrong was ever found. Everyone just figured I had a crazy imagination. I haven't had something like this happen since I was about twelve, so maybe they were right. Still freaks me out, though.

    • @happylittlespoonie
      @happylittlespoonie Месяц назад +6

      The things you describe reminds me of something I experienced. Some years ago I would sometimes have episodes of suddenly not recognizing parts of town I would frequent and then not being able to find my way home and I just had to wait until it suddenly flipped back and I could get back home. For a while doctors suspected mini-strokes, but then one time it happened when I was on the phone with my sister and I could still talk and remember things. So then they thought it might be epilepsy in the brain, but it wasn’t and after a long time with many doctors visits they found out it was a dissociative disorder. It might have been something similar that happened to you in your childhood. Either dissociation or maybe something neurological they just didn’t catch. It’s quite difficult catching epilepsy in the brain for instance. No matter what it’s good that it stopped happening, because it seems like your system just kinda grew out of it 😊
