- Another simple video on the removal and replacement of my front brake pads without turning the rotors. This is one of my better videos with better lighting. It's very straightforward. If you have comments or corrections you'd like to make, please do as I am still learning to do tutorials and learning to provide more and better shortcuts to Lexus maintenance.
Thank you!! You saved me a couple of hours of extra work. Never new I could replace front pads without removing the calipers. Just replaced the front brake pads following your RUclips instructions . Amazingly simple and easy. Without your advise I'd definitely start with taking the calipers off. Would feel pretty stupid if I did :). Thanks again!
Glad it helped!
So thankful to have my GX! Coming from a German luxury car that has electronic sensors for brake pad wear that needs to be replaced when triggered. Toyota keeps it refreshingly simple in addition to not having to remove the calipers to replace pads!
yeah for sure, easiest pad replacement ever.
Bob, thanks for your detail oriented videos. I’ve been starting watching most of your vids and learned a lot. Kudos to you, Bob!!!
Hey thanks a lot, Billa for the kind comment! Much appreciated.
Well done! The last brake job I battled with was my 1981 Gran Prix (when I got into the rear rotors, parts and springs went everywhere).
This video gives me the confidence to do my GX460 brakes myself. Thank you.
The brake job was very straight forward. Good luck Robert!
Thanks for making this video. Never could have done this without you! Appreciate for taking the time and being so clear. I did front and back.
Thanks for watching. I appreciate it!
Excellent video, thank you buddy
Hey Bob! Thanks for the vid! I appreciate your contribution to the GX community!!
Anytime Paul! Thanks for the comment.
Lexus GX very nice car the only issue it like premium fuel
I absolutely LOVE your videos. They're so helpful. I'm 35 and had never changed the brakes on a car before. Sad I know. But I was determined to learn how to do it on my GX. Your video made it so unbelievably easy. You saved us a few hundred dollars. Much appreciated 🙏🏼
Thanks for the comment, much appreciated! There’s plenty of other videos in my library so i hope they too come in handy. 😁
Thank you for this tutorial!
Changed the pads on my '19 GX thanks to you Bob!. It was the little sister comment that pushed me.
God damn it if you can’t do it I’ll callmy little sister to come over and help you out. That’s right man!
Awesome instructional vid, thanks for sharing your knowledge 👍🏾
Awesome repair video 👌, clear and concise. I have to replace my pads and rotors and this video helps. Thank you
You’re welcome!
I noticed that workout equipment in your garage that's the reason why you're all bowed up 🤪 seriously though thanks for the great videos you put out they're awesome helps me a lot with my 2014
True story. I bought that home gym off some fat dude that gave up. I bought it knowing i had more willpower than him only to let it sit and collect dust because when i worked out, i would stop and check out all the hot moms jogging by my street.
great video and great tip on how to get the pistons in with the c-clamp. I removed the caliper to replace my hub and accidentally pressed the brake lever to shift it to neutral. move the pistons out and was able to press them back in using a c clamp.. thanks for the tip :)
Thanks for the comment Lokesh!
Hey Bob! Love your videos. Is the process different for the 20+ because of brake bleeding?
Hey man thanks for the vid. Changed my front pads and rear pads and rotors (ran the pads too far and gouged the passenger side rotor). First time on my gx.
Glad it helped Pay Way! Don't forget to bleed your brakes.
man those were like more than 50% still, but appreciate the vid, thanks.
Just bought my 2020 GX460. Thanks for doing these video cause it's gonna save me so much time. Have you done a brake bleeding video yet?
I have not and you're not the first to request it. It is still on my list of things to do. Thanks.
Outstanding video, Just got a GX and look forward to your videos, Thanks
You think so? I almost hired a stunt double but ended up attempting it myself.
Some of the cars need brake grease for the pins that control the piston, does that apply to GX? Thanks!
Thank you so much. The dealer was trying to charge me $575 and on top of that sell me tires and drums.
I’ve got a lot more on my list of things to do. Hopefully I can pump some more out so I can bankrupt the dealership. 🤫
do you ever have your brakes making noise on cold start first few minutes? mine started doing it for a while
Great detailed information Bob, thanks!
Nice video although why in the way did you change your brakes is they have long time remaining thickness around 7-8 mm which seems new I would recommend changing if thickness below 3 mm or at 2 mm
I do a lot of things prematurely because i rarely wait for things to fail before i replace them. I’m more proactive than to wait to hear the brake wear detector scour my rotors.
Muchas gracias por compartir tus conocimientos bendiciones 🇭🇳
Luckily my friends are teaching me Spanish. Te gustas podas tras con dos dedos o un mano?
Thank you very much for sharing your work. Today I also changed the front two brake pads at home by myself. I wonder if the rear brake pads are still the same as the previous ones.
I typically change all 4 as a set, but it wouldn’t hurt to do the rear tires and see how much life is left in the rear pads.
Okay, I'm thinking about changing it later thank you
hey Bob. do you have any video to show, how to replace alternator/water pump belt? also do you know what is Timing Cover, r& r (add oil & filter) ? went to Lexus dealer and they say those needs to be replaced and they quote me almost the price of the car. thanks
Is it the same for the back brakes? Btw thank you for making these videos. I’m now a follower of the gxbob church.
Church of god or church of satan?

hey Bob, if you don't mind me asking what kinda JackStand do you use and let us know where is the best place to put jack under the truck? I have 3 ton jack stand and it seems very short for the GX? Can you also show where do you put your Jack to lift the truck? Thanks! appreciate your feedback!
Hi Sunil! Yes, i have a specific floorjack that is perfect for the GX460 I am going to pick this up during the labor day sale. It is a long reach for trucks with a foot pump so you don't have to use your arms which makes this floor jack awesome. Here is the link:
www.harborfreight.com/automotive/jacks-jack-stands/floor-jacks/3-ton-long-reach-low-profile-professional-floor-jack-with-rapid-pump-blue-56641.html
The jackstands i currently have are no longer sold by harbor freight but were intended for higher vehicles such as trucks. Here is a similar one that also has a higher lift point.
www.harborfreight.com/automotive/jacks-jack-stands/6-ton-heavy-duty-ratcheting-jack-stands-black-58342.html
I will do a video soon about the jack and jackstand but my truck is in the shop having some work done. I am currently doing projects for a 2022 Toyota Forerunner.
Hey Bob, great video! Thanks for contributing to the GX community. Can you do a video of you bleeding your brakes and changing the brake fluid? I've always struggled with how to change fluid in the brakes and how to properly bleed them. Thanks!
Hey Veritas, I've never had to bleed my brakes because i have never had to break the brake lines to replace my pads. The only reason i would bleed my brakes is if i introduced foreign air into the system and that is due to opening my brake lines to replace my caliper assembly. But a simple removes and replace of the pads doesn't require bleeding in my opinion. I always check my brake fluid canister and make sure the level is correct after i install the new pads. Other than that, my brake system works perfect w/o bleeding.
@@GXBOB thanks for the reply, Bob. I asked mainly because I plan to lift my truck and plan to install extended braided break lines. I've never bled brakes before. A "how-to" on this would be very helpful to the GX community!
@@terraformingcats8175 Ahhhh, i see. Well, i hope to do that as well when the time comes. I just haven't had a reason to bleed my brakes yet and plus my brakes are like a month old. I don't think i'll be attempting that for quite some time. There is plenty of info on google on how to self bleed brakes as a one-man job. The general concept can be used on the Lexus brake system. Its the same thing.
@@GXBOB thanks, Bob. Yes, there is a lot of info out there. I just really enjoy your videos. If you haven't bled your brake fluid and replaced it with new fluid, you might want to. Brake fluid breaks down after a while. It would be good to see you do the job.
@@GXBOB brake fluid absorbs moisture and the moisture will reduce the boiling point of the fluid, reducing performance of your brakes. So, most manufacturers recommend changing the brake fluid every two to three years or so.
When you say push it on second start, literally push the engine/start/stop button twice then pump breaks until breaks are tight. Correct?
Thanks for all your help!
Just start your engine. You want your brakes to activate. I didn’t bother bleeding because i didn’t open any of the lines. Recheck your fluid levels when you’re done. You should be good to go.
Hey Bob great video! I was wondering when doing the front pads do you have to do each side simultaneously? Or can you jack up one side at a time and do them one after another
Why would you do twice the work when you could just jack it up once per axle and knock out 2 brakes? Unless your resources and situation doesn’t allow it then yes doing one at a time is perfectly fine if it’s just a simple remove and replace
Why did you have to reuse The old shims for the brake pads. Don’t you get new shims with the new brake pads?
No i did not.
thank you anh hai 🙏🏾

Did you have to remove some fluid from brake reservoir before pushing pistons back?
No. I had to remove fluid from reservoir after the pistons were pushed back to meet the max line.
@GXBOB ok thank you!
Great video!!! Any tips on replacing the rotors on a 2019 GX460?
I’ll be doing one soon. Cross drilled slotted rotors
Thank you for the video, very hard to find videos on gx 460’s! I just bought one two months ago, and the rotors were warped. I had them replaced under warranty and they are warped again only a month after being replaced. Took it back to the dealer and they performed an alignment and replaced the rotors again today. I have no idea what’s causing this, do you have any suggestions? I drive pretty conservatively, like any average driver, so I doubt it’s my driving style, but who knows...
(Edit: I detected they were warped because the car would shake under braking at highway speeds. This is what happened with the new rotors replaced a month ago)
For one, your SUV is too large and heavy for your brakes. You're always going to eventually get steering wheel vibrations due to warped (heated) and/or thinning out rotors. I"ve learnt to deal with it. I've gone thru the same ordeal only to accept defeat. Your best bet is to buy slotted cross-drilled rotors which have significantly improved the life of my rotors from getting warped or overheated.
Great video! How did you determine that the rotors didn’t need to be replaced or resurfaced?
Because the original owner had the brakes done at the dealership. The pads were still new when i replaced them.
Do you have video of rotor replacement for this truck front and rear?
i actually included the rotor replacement during a brake job on my first-generation GX. Here is the link:
ruclips.net/video/LB0bDN5uUh0/видео.html
12:46 - Probably should have mentioned this part first regarding venting the brake reservoir :D
Hey Bob, thanks for all your GX videos. I've changed the front and rear brakes and rotors but my brake pedal feels very soft and spongy. The first half of the pedal travel does absolutely nothing, and the truck creeps on the stop light if I'm not standing on the brakes. Do you know what could be the cause? Thanks!
You got air in your brake line. You may need to bleed your brakes. Unfortunately, i haven't that issue and i don't have a video on it....yet. I would take it to a local mechanic and just have them bleed your brake line. It typically a 2 person job but i hear some folks have a way of just doing it with one. I dunno, for something as critical as your brakes, i wouldn't chance it. Just take it in. Pretty cheap and fast.
@@GXBOB Thanks for the fast reply, I'll bleed the system and let you know. Thanks again.
Question: is the line you used for the brake pins just WD40?? I couldn’t tell from the can.
try lithium grease or marine grade grease since your system might hit rain or wet weather from time to time.
Is your Clamp 6 inch or 8 inch?

So what Brand of brake pads and rotors do you recommend to buy ?
@@brandonfeliciano4615 R1 Concepts cross drilled slotted rotors and Lexus/Toyota oem pads is what I use
@@GXBOBthanks are they available on Amazon? Or where can I buy them, also they don’t squeak right. The dealers replaced mine for free and they still squeaking after 4K miles
@@brandonfeliciano4615 I purchased my rotors on Amazon. All Lexus parts I purchased online at Bell Lexus in Scottsdale, Arizona. Free shipping and they are the cheapest
Hey Bob, just got my calipers replaced. The 2 caliper pins on the driver side are tight but the 2 pins on the passenger (right side) side are not tight and can move easily in and out. Is that normal?
You want completely free moving pins. This enables your brake pads to slide towards your rotors with ease. A stuck pin will cause steering wheel shudder/vibration. Instead of lubing them up, i would just replace them with a brake hardware kit sold on ebay or Amazon. Fairly cheap.
Did you end up selling the pre-facelift 460? Congrats on picking this '17 up.
Yes i did! I had it for less than a month. I just picked this one up and i'm doing a 2020 facelift in my next video. So excited!
@@GXBOB Nice!!!!! Can't wait to check out that video..
Hi Mr. Bob, what Brand Break Pads do you recommend please?
i have always used oem Toyota brake pads.
Your the Best Funniest Instructor 🤣 Mr. Bob, and thank you for the bottom of my heart ❤️ 💙
Is there a preferred lube or grease for the pins?

Thanks Bro, time for front brakes on my 12 GX. They’re toast. Enjoyed your videos!👍
Hey Bob, how many miles the brake pads last? The last time mine last 10k miles but I thought it would be longer
Hey Ben, there is no scheduled brake pad replacement since everybody's driving habits are different. But it is recommended that you check the pads at each oil change (roughly 5k miles) to determine amount of wear. I wouldn't let the wear get down to the metal brake warning clip, that will end up digging into your brake rotors.
@@GXBOB thanks again Bob. Appreciate it
I prefer to change if they wear down to 2-3 mm thickness agree not to wait till brake wear indicator alarm
The main issue I observe is that rear brakes wear before front once around 10K
Hey Bob, What brand of break pad you used?
Oem Lexus Toyota brake pads.
Hey Bob please my Gx 460 2016 model calliper is not good once i m on speed the steering will be shaking. Please I need a place to buy it and waybill to me in Nigeria
i had the same issue. Try replacing the brake pin first to ensure that they are not getting stuck, then replace the rotors afterwards. These are common problems on the GX.
ruclips.net/video/pjHUubQ58zE/видео.html
What brake pads do you recommend?
I bought oem Toyota
what does that bottom spring do at 10:32? My GX460 Front brakes dont have that.
Dude. What do you mean your set up doesn't have that spring kit. It comes OEM that way for a reason. I'd go online and buy it if I were you. That tells me the previous owner left that spring out by accident or he forgot. Here is a link to what I'm talking about:

This is retainer spring to remove brakes from the rotor if not there your brakes will wear faster and you will feel squeeks all times
Hi Bob,
I can't figure how to send an email to you, so I have to use this video to ask a question on bleeding brake fluid on my 2011 GX460.
Q: Is there a power bleeder to fit my model, that you or anyone is aware of..?
Since my ABS is attached to the side of the reservoir & the master, I believe, is underneath the reservoir (3+" underneath the cowl) - Motive Products says they don't have an adapter for their Power Bleeders' to fit my reservoir filling neck.
Q:: do you know of any issues in flushing my brake fluid by the old pump the pedal method ..?
Also:
I heard you should pull the ABS fuse before flushing the brake system..
Q: Any logic to this pre-cation ?
Appreciate you man..
Whoaaaaa….. you’ve taken a simple brake bleed into another dimension. I’ve always done the simple straight forward loosen the bleed screw method. Have my kid pump the brakes, top off my reservoir, move to the next brake. Done. Kept it old fashioned and there’s plenty of RUclips for it. I didn’t bother with fancy gimmicks but if it works for you then great. I might just check up on this power bleed system you’re talking about. Thanks and hopefully someone can add onto this thread.

Mine is also 2017 :)
Did u do the facelift and headlamps conversion yet? I think that's the biggest investment that makes or breaks or breaks your car as far as eye appeal. The original grill makes your car look like a forerunner for some reason.
I only will ever use Akebono.....
To each their own. I have chosen Lexus/Toyota brake pads because the price is fairly decent.
So, when I turned the AutoZone brake pads back in, not only did I wind up saving $13.... I was told that the AutoZone brake pads were the best they sold and hard as rock.... And they would have destroyed my rotors.... You saved me quite a bit of trouble.... Why didn't the original AutoZone guy tell me that??? Anything for a buck I guess...
I have a rule of thumb: Anything that is for looks, i'll go cheap. Anything that has to do with safety, i'm buying original Lexus.
@@GXBOB Amen!
@@gatekeeper99924 I should have known....
@@gatekeeper99924 You do have a point. Their knowledge is very general and not specific to the badass GX.
Hello. I changed the front brakes according to your instructions - everything is fine. The only thing is that the wheel turn indicator on the display stopped showing the turn of the wheels. What could it be? I'm talking about front tire angle
Did you mean the display doesn’t show the pic of the truck with the tire angle at all? Or did you mean the truck just shows the truck with the tires pointing straight and not turn with the steering wheel? Toggle the switch on the right side of your steering wheel till the tire angle display shows up. The latter issue is you have a sensor unplugged around your wheel and not even aware of it.
@@GXBOB Well no. The display just shows the picture without the wheel sign. But now everything works. I just drove a kilometer and everything started working. thanks a lot for the advice!
