I just had a similar issue in a more catastrophic way. The same thing happened along with the brake strut and spring flying out. It damaged the dust shield behind the hub. The shoes welded themselves to the rotor. I tried using the push bolts but ended up cracking the rotor. I had to hit it with "my purse" to get it off. I repaired, replaced, lubed, and adjusted everything( used the rare earth magnet on the pins and zip ties on the spring method) but now im getting a clunk in reverse after moving a foot or 2. I suspect that the rear shoe may be sticking to the drum. Probably want to opt for the 12 pack instead of 6 for this job! Thanks for the entertaining GX content!
I installed the spring by seeing another video where the spring was compressed using three small zip ties and to keep the back washer on place the shoe and locking washer on spring I used the quick glue and spray catalyst to keep things together. Even after the spring was installed correctly the pin seemed longer which I pulled from back and kept shortened by adding thick copper wire on the stem before the pin back side head. It was definitely a very frustrating experience doing it at 11:30 pm at night and taking the whole tire off after doing an emergency brake tightening and the test drive revealed this agonizing screeching sound. I love your videos and the humor you put in which really motivate your viewers to do DIY as you make them so simple with detailed instructions. Keep up the good work on GX460!!!
Bob, your videos are honestly a god-send. Just picked up a '17 GX460 around Thanksgiving and am now hearing the noise that you were describing. Definitely going to be using this video to fix my noise!
@@GXBOB Appreciate the response!. But I ended up not being able to get the rotor off even when using the screws to back the rotor off. Got it scheduled with a mechanic I trust
Bob, your video is timely. I've seen some Facebook posts on some GX sites asking about the scraping noise on the rear drivers side. Like I do a lot I link your videos for a possible fix. You are a hero to many and I think President Biden should give you a Metal of Freedom award for your help from rip off repair shops.
Bob you have to remove the emergency pad then install the pin with spring. That is the reason for the slot in the pad instead of a hole, so you can slip back the pad under the spring and lockiing washer.. Thks for your videos !
Bob, I just set aside our new 2022 GX 460! It’s suppose to arrive in the US on 3/14 and at the dealership two weeks later, so we should finally have her home by the end of the month. I look forward to completing several of tour mods, LED turn signals, interior lights, etc. Thanks again. It’s crazy that if you don’t set one aside before they arrive they’ll be gone by the time they hit the dealership, just nuts! Take care.
Enrique! I dunno. For some reason i prefer a used one that needs TLC. That’s where i can actually get my hands dirty and put her back to new again. Not much you can do with a 2022 except stare at her beauty. 😀
Yes she’s going to be very nice, however there are still mods that are necessary like the LED lights for the interior, turn signals, puddle lamps, etc. there are a few that you’ve completed over the years that I will do. Thanks and take care.

i was working on the brakes last afternoon and noticed that the right side rear brake rotor was not coming off at all. after about 6 hours of non stop banging the rotor and even stripping the 2 screw holes, i was finally was able to get it off but caused cracks in my parking brake shoe and both sides of that spring with cotter pin came off. im hoping that the brake shoes wont cause any noise but im so glad i found a video that shows what i need. you should really retitle it "gx460 parking brake repair" or something like that so its easier for people to find. took me hours to find this video. now im really sore and afraid to do the other side...
Seems like more and more people are being affected by this. Mine happed right after a brake job. The sound was very miniscule but enough to drive me crazy.
Can you show us how to unprogram the garage door opener. This would be helpful when selling your gx460 due to the high gas price so the new owner doesn’t use the garage door opener to break into your house
gxbob, i have the rear passenger side having scraping noises, it wouldnt be e-brake issue? i see your video the e-brake adjustment is on the driver side ?
You have E brake adjustment spindles on both the driver and passenger rear drums. You might want to take your entire rear rotors off to see if your inner brake shoes are down to the metal. It happens when you keep driving off and forgetting to release the E-brakes. I'm doing a video on that soon as mine are making squeeling noises already.
@@GXBOB thanks for the quick response, really appreciate it, right now when i lower my front passenger or rear passenger windows i can hear a spinning scraping sound, this was maybe 2 months ago, now my rotors are scratched up, could this be a result of my e-brake shoe? i suppose to have 20k more miles left on the brake pads but recently when i press on the brakes i get a shudder and metal sound, feels like brake pads are done, is my e-brake shoes done too? the driver side rear rotors looks okay but the passenger rear rotors looks shot and scratched up bad
@GxBob - Another great video Bob! Ever do any repairs to the parking sensors ? I was pulling into a driveway. Stopped and shifted to reverse. When the ⚠️ light came on. Now I get “check parking sensors” warning on the center console screen. Any experience with the parking sensors / repair?
If you had unhooked the top springs would you have had enough side-to-side play in the pad to have used a brake spring compressor tool to compress the spring?
I just did my rear brakes and rotors this am and the spring fell out on me. What a pain. I cussed and spent forever….I was finally able to get some curved hemostats through the hole on the hub and compress and twist into place…in about 30 seconds.
Hey Bob. A little off topic. But might need addressed. I hear a lot of problems with people getting their catalytic converters stolen. Do you know if this is a problem with the gx460s?? Or are they to hard to reach? Or should we be doing something about it before we get a huge repair bill. Any thoughts on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
I was going to do a video on an anti theft for it probably in April. The issue is people trying to steal your catalytic but end up stealing your resonator instead.
I’m confused bob. Is the part referred to as a parking brake shoe or just the brake shoes because I checked with auto zone and they said the official part is called a parking brake shoe. My mechanic checked it out and told me to get the brake shoe and the brake hardware kit just like you did in this video
Technically its the same thing. The part is called the brake shoe and it acts as the parking brakes. Others call it the drum brakes. Power Stop B850 Autospeciality Rear Brake Parking Shoe www.amazon.com/dp/B01NAQ0SRQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_QQ68FDHPGR7T4EQK435H?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Might want to clean your windows with alcohol front and back of glass to rid of whatever residue was left prior. Then rewax the front and back of your glass with ceramic wax. 👍

I here the squeak with windows down but when u touch the break pedal it goes away, does that sound right?
If you had unhooked the top springs would you have had enough side-to-side play in the pad to have used a brake spring compressor tool to compress the spring?
I thought about that and no there is not enough play. Even if there was, it would have to align with the fixed hole in the back plate.

you either have very tiny fingers or you're double jointed. I had a terrible time trying to get that spring compressed.

Should have put the tabbed washer under the pin head on the shoe side to retain it in the shoe slot.

Hey Jeff, that pin would have to creep a good distance to fall out of the slot. The compressed spring won’t allow it to creep.

hi bob, do you have any issues with your gx front window in the rain. my window doesn’t fog up its like really blurry.

I did attempt that but even with the springs compressed to the max, the amount of space the zip ties took up gave No slack to add the cover plate.
Compress by vice grip pliers, insert wire and twist it tight. Installed it then clip off the wire.
