    The Russian approach to things like this is always like they've watched too many Hollywood action movies. There is no such thing as 'sleeping gas' per se - if you want to render a human unconscious through use of sedative substances, no matter how it's administered, they're all going to need respiratory support. The dosage that the people inside received was undoubtedly massive and was always going to end in causing mass civilian casualties. In classic Russian style though this basic fact was ignored and a lot of innocent people died due to reckless incompetence.

    • @darkhymn
      @darkhymn 19 дней назад +1

      It probably wasn’t incompetence so much as willful negligence. The Russian stance on civilian casualties varies between “shit happens, people are cheap” when it’s Russian civilians in question and “yes, as many as possible” when it’s anyone else. They wanted those militants dead and civilian casualties simply weren’t a factor.

    My youth pastor's brother and his family were in the Dubrovka Theatre when this happened. The terrorists released them (at the end of the first day if I remember right) as they were US citizens, but their Russian friends had to stay through the whole thing, I believe they all survived. They still stayed in Russia until the invasion of Ukraine. I was a young kid when that happened, but I remember it well, though I haven't thought about it in 10 years.. We had youth group on Wednesday or Thursday nights, it was a pretty surreal experience as we all sat there watching the tv.

      Technically their government is a Federal semi-presidential republic under an authoritarian dictatorship.

    The gas used was carfentanyl, an analogue of fentanyl reserved for use in sedating massive mammals like elephants.
    Due to the inevitably heterogeneous distribution of the gas, hostages which were positioned near vents used to deliver the gas sustained unsurvivable doses, whilst others got far less in their system.
    All it would have taken is the foresight to supply enough oxygen and naloxone to restore the hostages respiratory drive, and many of the deaths would never have occured.
    What a tragic story, and one told so well in this video that despite being an MD with a degree in pharmacology and detailed knowledge of these events, i still enjoyed the video tremendously and even learned a few new things.

    Hello Simon, genuinely love your videos as they are informative and mostly partial. Here, you've added a deliberate tone of negativity towards one side. I remember this in the news as I grew up in post soviet country. You only mention part of the story of special forces siege and media coverage laws that followed this incident. What forces had to struggle with were the media itself: reporters would go live with images of forces attempting a rescue mission. Those reports were watched by the hostage takers on the inside, so they knew exactly from which angle and how big of a force they should expect. There were numerous mission attempts! At each failed one the Chechens would execute another few hostages as retaliation. Media were asked not to report live, but understandably they didn't as the whole country was watching this. Imagine how many people could have been saved!! Multiple failed attempts also resulted in the decision to use the gas. If I remember correctly, this incident made Russia leaders to say very famous words "we will not negotiate with terrorists". This was received with quite an agreement from the population. Let's be real: hostage rescue missions are extremely delicate and no matter the detail of planning things go wrong and sadly, people lose their lives. There will be of course multiple negative comments from families, however I think focusing on that final comment has ruined this video. It stopped being impartial.

    I remember watching a documentary on this event. And I remember thinking to myself just how shocking it was on the sheer level of incompetence of the Russian government and military and such during this event. I mean, it was absolutely laughable in all the wrong ways.
    Personally, I think the only event that was even worse was an event that took place in. I believe it was Peru. Where a group of individuals stormed the Japanese embassy and took a large number of individuals hostage and the Peruvian government instead of trying to do things easily they literally , I think it was like two months digging a tunnel underneath the road so that a bunch of commandos could pop up and take down the various insurgence or whatever you wanna call them. A whole process that I feel was needlessly, complicated and complex.
    Also, it seems that even now Russia has not learned its main lesson. They are still thinking in terms of the Soviet system where the citizens are basically just statistics. I can tell you that if an event like this happened in the United States, it wouldn’t have taken as long as it did resolved. If anything, the event would’ve been dealt with in probably less than two days.

    24:20 On the subject of naloxone.... It's also important to note that - while effective and rapid acting - naloxone is also incredibly *_short_* acting. Meaning, often times, multiple doses are needed following opioid overdose / poisoning, as the previous naloxone dose wears off. This is because naloxone works by competitively blocking the receptors, temporarily preventing / limiting binding by more dangerous opiates. It however, does nothing to help break down those opiates more quickly; meaning those opiates are still there once the naloxone wears off.

    Hello there. Since I always hear the term "Chechen terrorists", I wonder if you could make a couple videos covering the Russian terrorist attacks on Chechen civilians. Those attacks took place before any of the events you covered in your channel. It would be good if you would tell people about Samashki or the bombing of refugee columns in 1996 and 1999. Another Russian terrorist attack to cover would be the terrorist attack in Aldi. Those attacks are terrorist attacks because one of the goals was to scare people. The terrorist attack in Samashki actually worked well for the Russians because nearby villages surrendered to the Russian army.
