I know almost nothing about the wars in Chechnya or Putin's origins, so thank you for this informative episode. I would very much enjoy more videos on the history of the Caucasus region!
God be with you out there, everybody. ✝️ :)
Yo my fav history teacher! Thanks for the upload now I have another vid to watch/listen to at work and to chat with my delivery driver about. We can listen to your vids and talk about it for up to an hour.😊 keep it up man I just wish I can do what you do. Love most history
Dude its been a long time and it never fails to impress me

Good evening Sir, Outstanding informative video and very well done 👌👍 Cheers 🍻
About life during the 2nd chechen war, i recommend the comic "Amère Russie" by Doucoudray and Aurélien. It's the story of a russian mother who has no news from his conscript son sent to fight in Chechnya, and her journey to Grozny to find him. It's heartbreaking and awesome, totally recommended
Russian army suffered much betrayals from it's own politicians during 90s. Just like when deputy of Russian Government comes with squad of Chechens to encircled Russian soldiers and suggests giving up while it's known that after giving up they will be killed
where can you find the comic in English?
Sound intresting... Is there any english translations of this comics?
@@ThanosManThing @maku found it published in italian (Cecenia: la guerra dei figli) i think on the internet there's an english scanlation, maybe on the mule or some /co/?
Don't trust any books written by russians about Chechnya
Thanks for the video. One smal corrections: the Moscow theater where 2002 hostage crisis took place is known as "the theater on Dubrovka", while "Nord Ost" is the name of the musical which was being performed in the said theater before being interrupted by the attackers
Please can you continue this by discussing the power dynamics of the 2008 Russo Georgian war?
He will completely miss Georgian position on ethnical purges. Or rather mention them once
Don't know if y'all have done this, but Chinese history has some pretty metal wars that would make for several good videos

My grandfather is a veteran of the both wars. He saved a nearly dead helicopter pilot and has 21 medals for service, mostly for the Grozny offensive. Now he lives in Volgograd and i sometimes visit him.

Spetsnaz aren't a specific unit, like for example Green Berets or Delta Force. It's more like a classification category of various units.
He forgot to explain the conflict in Dagestan
and Ingushetia, and Osetia, and criminal activities in other regions.
I remember I met a kid in California high-school. He came from Dagestan, Russia. He said that he's dad was taken away from home by armored Chechens. He never saw him again.
Lots of Russians in the Sacramento area

Awesome and interesting video thanks for covering this Griffin Johnson.
Will this be a series? I’ve been interested in seeing a Netflix quality political drama on Putin similar to House of Cards or The Crown
Much appreciated coverage!
Thank you so much for this precious video!
I remember watching this war on TV. It was Russia’s version of 9/11 and the continuation of their war on terrorism
Ironically Russia (Soviet Union if correctly) provoked this conflict breaking up with other republics and letting nationalism raise just like US helped Ben Laden raise.
Who are the good guys in this war? Who should I cheer for?
@@therealchen Should I cheer for Ukraine as well?

Well following the Russian defeat in 1994. It’s commonly believe the Chechens provoked the second Chechen war. I was ok with the Russians going in and cleaning their clocks

Can you please do the Troubles next? Such a complicated and politically divided conflict needs to be simplified for people to understand better.
Nice to finally see a video that is not about ww1 or ww2
You should make an Emu War video 😊😊
man i got to say im loving the quality of the videos! watching this channels videos is like an event!
Love him or hate him you gotta admit Putin has done some AMAZING "ladder climbing" in his life. Not long ago I read an article said he was the most powerful man in the world!

Who are the good guys in this war? Who should I cheer for?
@@chaosXP3RT Normally in War, There are no good guys but the ones who survive. However, To me since the Chechens comitted Terorrist Attacks outside of Chechnya and also collaborating with Radical Groups such as ISIS, it seems to me like the Russians are the "Good Guys".
If you are talking about the Ukraine War. I a Russian cheer for my country, It should be you to develop your own opinions, you should probably research on your own. If you dont know where to start, Look up "Stepan Bandera"

Yes the Putin bombings. I love that the Russian military guards caught FSB agents planting the bombs. The Putin bombings is a great documentary.
Finally you are doing Russian history. I had to live through 2 Chechan Wars
Just saw TommyKays reaction to this, amazing video, awesome animations!
Y’all did him dirty with dat thumbnail 😂
If you want to be chilled to your bones, listen to the conversation between the defending commander in Grozny and the attacking commander. They were acquaintances and the defender knew his ambush would annihilate the Russians so he begged him to have pity for their mothers and retreat, not to kill his own men and that noone would win in this war. All he got in reply was that he had orders and he would follow them.
i've heard that conversation they both fought in afghanistan together

I still remember the night when windows in my apartment were trembling after the explosion in Bratislavskaya. Putin looked like a good guy back then.

I like the video very much. I am especially glad that you decided to cover the topic, but I believe more should have been said about the apartment bombings, and that they were a bit suspicious. Another pretty significant event that I am surprised you did not cover is the Beslan hostage crisis

I remember reading about this in High School and I had always thought it was framed as a Rebellion being disrupted by the Russians. Thanks man!
It was a rebellion, a coup made by a military general and a member of communist party who decided to make a revenge on "Moscow liberals"
Outstanding piece of work!
Can you make a video on World War 2 from China's perspective? That would be really interesting!
That's fascinating. And incredibly relevant.
Seems like a great case study for understanding geopolitics, modern war, guerilla movements
The conclusion and aftermath part feels like something out of Star Wars
It's crazy how much the Chechen War reflects the current Ukraine War. I love how this video looked into modern history! I'd still love to see a video on the Soviet Afghan War! That war has influenced so much of the 21st century that we're still living with its effects today. It would be interesting to compare the Soviet Afghan War with the Vietnam War and the American Afghan War.
