This song is such a raw exploration of the duality of mourning. How you can rage against the unfairness while still reeling from the misery of loss. Such an underrated song that anyone who has lost a loved one can relate to.
I lost my dad a few years ago and every time I hear this song I sing it angry because "Pulled walked away before your time. I can't stand it, it's very unfair," but then I feel better. These songs are the ones that help you show your emotions a little and when it's over, you return to normal.

If remember correctly Dexter wrote this in memory of his girlfriend who passed away. It's a beautiful song
nah its not, i saw a video couple time ago where they explain it, its about somethings hapenned when they was in ''vacation'' with his wife, ....they where in a store when someon starting shooting rounds everywhere, after that he wriht that song, like if him or his wife died in that tromatic experience ( sorry for my bad english ) ....................... if you whant to se that video search for '' The Offspring: Why 'Gone Away' Is So Misunderstood About Dexter Holland's Personal Life '' ( its the title of that video )

@michaelserrano3689 You're correct, he wrote this after his girlfriend was killed in a car accident. I don't know what (marc5384152) is talking about, but it has nothing to do with this song if it happened at all.

I checked out the video and channel (marc5384152) referenced and found that channel has a long history of posting videos with false information about subjects that have a polarizing aspect just to get views and comments on his channel. There's even a disclaimer at the beginning of his videos stating that he holds no accountability for the accuracy of the information in his videos

The original.. Yes!! This needs to get more love over 5FDP since alot of people think they originally did it and it was a remake.

I am so excited that I finally get to see The Offspring play live in January next year. Smash was a frequently played album during my high school years. The band still kicks ass and writes amazing and relevant songs.

Saw Offspring live at Lolapallooza São Paulo, awesome perfomance!
Stand mic gives more movement, but the mic they used is like a pendulum, which plays more for the atmosphere the video is creating. And I was a college freshman when this tune came out and had dealt with a friend’s death, so to me, the song hit the right beats.

Offspring doesnt get enough credit
I can never listen to this song without tearing up, this song always makes me think of my niece that passed away in 2014 from a drug overdose. She was so young and had so much life ahead of her, I miss her so much

In The Offspring version you strongly feel the anger and frustration that you can't change what happened, but Five Finger Death Punch conveys the sadness better. 2 brilliant versions of the same song
This came on the radio in 2015 as I was driving home from my father's funeral. Still hits me today.

I feel you. my sister used to listen to guns n roses in her teens, while I listened to trash. and now its vice versa.
About 7 years ago my mom was in the hospital for the last time. The rest of the family wanted to pull the plug but me and my sister wanted to take a day to talk about it because we knew our mom would want at least that. So we did and decided that it would be best to let her go. So we got in the car and this was the first song that came on. I immediately hit skip and was like, nah not today. Took like 5 years before I finally said ok and didn't skip the song when it came up.
Funny that you mention Avenge Sevenfold's song, because I have both that and this song to remind me of my best friend who is no longer here.

This is so much better then the Five Finger Death Punch cover, to me anyways. I know people like the meaning of the FFDP video, but I remember when this version came out, so maybe that is why I like it better.

I understand Ive probably forgotten more songs and bands then i remember, and the only way to trigger those memories is to see someone elses reaction or mention
People use "iconic" way too often these days, to describe things that are just good, not emblematic of something. This song is truly iconic, it captures the essence of The Offspring, and even the whole rock movement at that point in time.

Hmm, my musical taste hasn't really changed much since my teens a bit over 50 years ago. Finding newer stuff that satisfies it isn't that easy, though.
Pretty sure Dexter is an actual rocket scientist or something very similar.
Phd in molecular biology, and has done a fair amount of research into HIV, even got a paper on it published in 2013

@rayactions Indeed, FFDP did a version of this song, to which you already reacted. But nothing to do with one interpretation with the other. The version by FFDP (a band that I like a lot, although not exactly that version) is simply a normal song, with respect to which the virtues it has are not from the version itself, but from the beautiful composition of lyrics and music from the original song, which Dexter Holland composed after having endangered his life and that of his wife in a shooting in which they were accidentally involved (although there is an erroneous legend that Holland composed it in honor of a deceased girlfriend). However, the original Offspring song is a marvel, far, far superior to the FFDP version, not least because Ivan Moody's voice is a very good voice, but Dexter Holland is simply one of the 40s or 50s (I would say i) best vocalists in rock history.
You should react to Billy Howerdel's recent solo album - song called Free and Weightless. He is the second vocalist in A Perfect Circle.

It is the lead guitar player from an old band called deep purple with their front man. Ronnie James Dio. dio went on to have a solo career and also was the second lead singer for a band you might have heard of called Black Sabbath
The only Offspring song that is true and heartfelt…. They nail this song to the wall and envelope all the emotions, beautifully….. Their one true masterpiece of pop/rock.

I just don't know how you could remember this unless your sister listened to the Greatest Hits album for years after its release. Then, why would she know this song? She would have to be a lot older than you, or your parents were into The Offspring and your sister liked it from a very young age.
The original is much rawer than five finger death punch's iteration. It's not made for money but for what it means to Dexter.
