For years I thought my walk required a purpose such as getting a paper, a coffee, etc. Thanks for helping me see that walking is its own purpose and reward.

Hi Dave! I'm 52, a grandmother and mom of three grown children. I've been walking seriously since high school. It's taken me through all my life's ups and downs. I live in New Hampshire where the weather isn't always the best! But as a NewEnglander, I walk in every kind of weather! I listen to you every day, I walk everyday. Thank you so much for your podcast, it helps so much. Especially with a busy work, family life, it helps me with my anxiety and stress. Thank you so much! Heather

I have noticed that my pants keep getting bigger.
I remember reading a story about a secretarial pool from decades ago that switched from manual to electric typewriters. Each secretary gained an average of ten pounds over the next year.
We have made life too easy with our cars, automatic dishwashers, robot vacuum cleaners, riding lawnmowers, etc. Walking adds back that bit of exertion we have engineered out of our lives.

also its not about the burning of the calories during the exercise, its about how it improves your baseline metabolism for daily calorie consumption. think of it as adding a multiplier to your metabolism.

Hi, Dave, with your consistency in uploading you support my consistency to walk… what I enjoy most is the mood changing, though weightloss is my goal, too. We underestimate the power of 'a bit'… and the power of 'every day'. I’m grateful, that I CAN walk, there are many in my age, who can’t , and I’m grateful I found you at a time, where my motivation was low. Love from Germany, Monika❣

I started walking about 8K to 12K steps a day the last four years. While it certainly was beneficial for weight loss and general health, I think cutting food intake by about 15-20% and eliminating colas from diet was equally beneficial. Thanks for your channel.

Loosing weight is about eating healthy. There is a Dutch expression: “ieder pondje komt door het mondje” (literally translated: every pound comes through the mouth). My mother used to say it a lot. It also depends on the weight you are coming from. It goes fast at first. The closer you get to your “ideal” weight the harder it gets. I have been on the same weight for the last 30 years. I tried very hard to loose the weight that built up in the post menopausal years. I lost it everywhere but there. So I came to terms with my “middle”, the 72 kilos/163cm and size 12. With my 76 years according to BMI I'm okay. Walking (and I do a lot) does not make me loose weight. However, and this is the important part, it keeps me from loosing bone mass and muscle mass (and building fat mass).

I am getting older and must walk with a cane due to old injuries. I have dogs and they get me out walking for their sake. I find when I walk, it's easier to lose weight and my mood is so much better. I just feel a little happier all day.

Ask your PT about Walking Sticks. Using two during the walk made them much more enjoyable for me. You get the same stability as a cane, but you get a more normal movement and a lot more support. It also makes your upper body movement more normal. It took a day or so for my dog to get used to it, but now they are fine.

Great question, but I actually don’t know. I’m not a doctor or licensed personal trainer, but I know it’s important to push the heart rate occasionally…and I try to do that by increasing my pace and finding some hills (which isn’t easy when you live near the beach) Thanks for watching

I lost 60+ lbs in 2014 by going low-carb eventually shifting more to carnivore. I maintain now eating more of a Mediterranean style diet, but my approach kickstarted the weight loss. Took 10 months. Check out the movie “Fathead”, it sparked my initial motivation. Hang in there and best wishes.
