Untangle is great. The free option has plenty of features if you don't need the web filtering. If you just want an easy to set up router you can run on old stuff, its fantastic. Thank you so much for spending so much time on educating people on all things networking! If you ever decide to make an updated version, I have a small suggestion: It might be worth it to talk a little bit about the connection from the router to the ISP and the difference between a modem and a router. I am well aware that this is different for every ISP; but in general, when you try to "talk to your ISP how to use your own router", they will give you information how to use your own modem. With modem/router-combined devices being very popular, most people will have such a device from their ISP which also includes a Wifi Access Point. In many cases, this could lead to more confusion: Just connecting our UM250-untangle-router to such a device will make you have essentially two routers, which will make matters worse. Some devices will be connected through untangle and some will not, which will reduce the bandwidth untangle can work with depending on the load of the "other" router/network/wifi. In this case, even the initial speedtest may not be accurate.
Its a shame that Untangle got bought out and massively jacked up the price of the home licenses. $150/year now for what I was able to pay $50/year for. I am lucky I got the 5 year deal for $200 back in 2020, as the pricing now is ridiculous compared to what it once was. My next build will give PFSense or OPNSense a shot to see if they finally fixed the UPNP issue when you have multiple games consoles trying to play the same matchmade game like Call of Duty.
While this setup is awesome its also expensive, complicated and mostly unnecessary for the average user. I think most bad internet 'setups' are caused by low bandwidth, perhaps something like sub-50mbit, in which case a setup like this could be be nice. I think security is better handled on the device, so AV with webfilter installed also works when a device is roaming outside LAN. The ISP in my area also delivers Docsis 3.1 by standard to residents which have QoS already implemented through PIE, which is very effective
_"and mostly unnecessary for the average user"_ he, he. the many people that I have deployed such a setup for strongly disagree. You don't know what you are missing out on until you have it. ;-) _"perhaps something like sub-50mbit"_ Consider that the vast majority of connections are asymmetrical, which means (much) less up than down - so *UP* can still be a major bottleneck while *down* is not. And also factor in the number of users (i.e. 2 parents + 2 bandwidth hungry teenage kids). Then with that in mind connections that do 250Mbps down can still need both SQM as well as some bandwidth management to keep the users happy. _"I think security is better handled on the device"_ Actually you want both. I frequently have Untangle prevent all kinds of security incidents on sites where an average user clicks on a link (or attachment) he should not click on and their client then starts to download i.e. ransomware (luckily blocked by untangle - IT DOES NOT OFFER PERFECT PROTECTION THOUGH!!!) or not so severe problems (like a virus/malware/trojan from a minecraft mod download site). Besides blocking sites that are a security concern, content filtering also helps with ads (which I forgot to mention).
What a great video! In the Cloud Key networks does the "LAN" network need to be enabled for the main Wi-Fi network to be on it? I noticed you didn't change any of it's settings when you setup the main Wi-Fi network.
I am sorry, but subscription based software for essential things like this is a total no-go. Maybe do a video like this for people without kids that don't need this software.
If you don't need what can be achieved with the Untangle apps then *this video is clearly not for you!* If you just want to eliminate buffer bloat then use and EdgeRouter as I said at the very beginning of the video.
@@BattleNonSense Yeah, your video about that is very old, though. People have 1gbit and up connections nowadays and its really hard to find out the QoS capabilities of recent hardware. Most still only are able to route 100 to 300 mbit with QoS enabled and youre forced to use a similar custom setup as in this video. If you know about routers that can deal with 1gbit QoS, then that would be nice to see in an updated version of your old video. ;)
@@cartrips9263 Yeah if you have more than 240Mbps and still suffer from bufferbloat, or when you want to do content filtering or advanced bandwidth control like I showed in this video, then there is *no of-the-shelf router* that can do that. Your only option is to go down the route of building your own router on an x86 platform. There is also no other solution that I am aware of which offers this much, is *session based* and this cheap.
Always love your videos and always learn something but with respects to accommodating as much as people as possible with no command line or at least as least as possible you've basically ruled out people with a budget. Quite an expensive setup.
Have you gone over the Apex Legends tech blog? I always see people complain about the servers and I know that they're pretty low performance compared to other servers but I don't notice much. Respawn downplayed upgrading the servers so it's be nice to get a different perspective on it too.
Hi Chris. Can I ask why you went for an APU? Does the software utilise the Radeon cores at all ? I'm looking to build something similar and I want to make sure it's got plenty of grunt. I already have AP's I can vlan tag, so its just the main router ik interested in utilising. But looking at the cost. Is the APU needed ? Would an older say i5-7500T mini pc I alresdy have with dual WAN which has grunt but no APU do the job ?
Hi, I got my repurposed sophos firewall which is running pfsense to mitigate buffer bloat (+18ms peak on down saturation +1ms peak on up saturatio). So i think I will stick with that. Also my existing hardware is plenty good enough. CPU peaks at 29% the 6gb RAM barley goes over 10% I do like the untangled features, but as I can do what I need for free will stick with pfsense. I just had to setup CoDel limiters with taildrop queues inside them. Then route all traffic in and out of WAN via these queues with 2 firewall rules.
Please make a video where you can see the input lag of Battlefield 2042. I still think that it is horribly optimized and I notice input lag that is not normal in an FPS. Thanks for the work and congratulations for the channel. 😘😘😘
Top notch content as always. I have a question if I may. While playing games I loose connection to servers when playing BFV It boots me out of game. Do you have any thoughts?
I think you should have given asus AImesh a consideration (Asus router software that lets you make a mesh out of standalone wireless routers and APs), and while it is a mesh, it doesn't have to be, because they can work with wired backhauls. Not to mention that a lot of old routers support the feature, so it can be pretty cheap if you have a good used market in your area. EDIT: it might also be better for handing off devices between APs.
This is kind of a tangent, but I am curious what anti-virus suite if any you're running. I think a test of latency, and performance impact would be an interesting video between some of the options out there. No gaming based channel has really delved into that.
Please go further with the DPI video Im very curious how lower the delay gets when you go up to DPIs like 25,600 currently I use 12,800 as a daily drive. Please make a video on this going in further detail with DPIs in the 5-25k thousands to see if there are any benefits of mouse accuracy at all.
Hi Chris, how do air play and Chromecast devices work when the kids are on a separate vlan? Are they able to see it? If not, is there a way to set up a broadcast port in untangle? Oops, just got to the point in the video where you address this. Haha 32:40
I should have mentioned that it works *inside* thei kids network. So when they have a TV and lets say sonos speakers, then they can control their devices, but they have no access to smart devices on the main network (which is not necessarily a bad thing 😅)
I dont know a better way to contact you: Could please do an analysis on the Hunt: Showdown netcode? Its so 90s but the Devs and Admins refuse any criticism.. They have a 800ms threshold and think thats ok....
Content Filtering is not session based (at least I have not found one that is, they are all DNS based) UPnP is still not usable despite their recent attempts to fix it Untangle just provides everything you need to get it done in one package - and the setup is relatively simple.
for the $50 dollar package how did you get past the 50 device limit? Or do you have less than 50 devices in your home? I would think IOT devices probably don't need web filtering?
You tag devices you want to run though the filter, everything else you leave untagged. The device will route an unlimited number of devices with any license, but will only filter 50 that you tag.
Did you link the wrong device in the description? According to the spec sheet the UM250 only has 1 ethernet port! By the way, any reason why you didn't choose a pc from qotom? They come with 4 to 8 Intel ethernet ports for fewer money
That store page is a bit of a mess. The "specs" tab is indeed wrong. On the main landing page of the UM250 scroll down until you reach the "Buttons & Ports for UM250 Mini PC" section. There you see an image of the back of the PC as well as a detail list of all ports, including "2x RJ45 Port" :)
It would be great if you made a Video on the Fritz Box Router line or their Top Devices. They aren't remotely as Customizable as others, but can be considered Jack of all Trades Devices.
Hello @Battle(non)sense ! Can you PLEASE!!! make a video about the server performance from hunt showdown... people are claiming it has an adaptive tickrate between 10 and 120 hz some say it is between 80 to 120 hz and the devs do not give out ANY information about the servers whatsoever... it feels like 30 ticks at most... i would highly appreciate a testing of that game... i love this game but i have the feeling that the servers have a lot of issues... i can buy you the game if you want to test it... it is a great game
i have an old rig with a xeon cpu a quadro 2000 and 16 gb of ddr2 ram the problem is that valorant runs at 180 fps average on this pc however the latency is horrible and i cant figure out why since the fps is high, when i play with a friends pc the fps is lower but i statistically preform much much better and it feels extremely smooth. My question is since both the gpu and cpu have a 70/ max load when running the game could it be the ram that is causing the latency ??? or should i just get rid of this rig and buy an actual gaming one ??

While this setup is awesome its also expensive, complicated and mostly unnecessary for the average user. I think most bad internet 'setups' are caused by low bandwidth, perhaps something like sub-50mbit, in which case a setup like this could be be nice.
I think security is better handled on the device, so AV with webfilter installed also works when a device is roaming outside LAN. The ISP in my area also delivers Docsis 3.1 by standard to residents which have QoS already implemented through PIE, which is very effective
_"and mostly unnecessary for the average user"_
he, he. the many people that I have deployed such a setup for strongly disagree. You don't know what you are missing out on until you have it. ;-)
_"perhaps something like sub-50mbit"_
Consider that the vast majority of connections are asymmetrical, which means (much) less up than down - so *UP* can still be a major bottleneck while *down* is not. And also factor in the number of users (i.e. 2 parents + 2 bandwidth hungry teenage kids).
Then with that in mind connections that do 250Mbps down can still need both SQM as well as some bandwidth management to keep the users happy.
_"I think security is better handled on the device"_
Actually you want both.
Thanks for the amazing guide :)
Hey little notice on this Old video.
In the Discription you accidently Switched the Link from "WiFiMan" (Android and IOS Version)
Does nvidia image scaling adds extra inputlag ?
How I miss your videos!
No, but it is recommended to not use image scaling for higher and more consistent FPS
What a great video! In the Cloud Key networks does the "LAN" network need to be enabled for the main Wi-Fi network to be on it? I noticed you didn't change any of it's settings when you setup the main Wi-Fi network.
Brilliant video, thank you.
Pls make one hitreg video for battlefield 2042
I am sorry, but subscription based software for essential things like this is a total no-go. Maybe do a video like this for people without kids that don't need this software.
If you don't need what can be achieved with the Untangle apps then *this video is clearly not for you!*
If you just want to eliminate buffer bloat then use and EdgeRouter as I said at the very beginning of the video.
Could We please have a revisit to Escape from Tarkov network delay. Would be super interesting to see the actual change after all this time.
Watching this on my laggy wifi, video constantly stopping :(
Always love your videos and always learn something but with respects to accommodating as much as people as possible with no command line or at least as least as possible you've basically ruled out people with a budget.
CPU peaks at 29% the 6gb RAM barley goes over 10%
I do like the untangled features, but as I can do what I need for free will stick with pfsense.
I just had to setup CoDel limiters with taildrop queues inside them. Then route all traffic in and out of WAN via these queues with 2 firewall rules.
Ich liebe deine Videos, nutzt du das Setup immernoch so ?
Can you do more net code explaining vids. I would like to see how the halo net code works
I must have missed it somewhere, but why Untangle instead of pfSens?
Hey buddy, if you're there we really need you for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. I hope all is okay!!!
I just read some comments that you're no longer making videos. That's too bad. Life trumps RUclips as for darn certain. Best of luck!
You should do a video on netcode in games like Hunt Showdown, where the netcode, desync, and hit reg are huge issues.
Easily the best videos, very detailed, might I ask is the mini pc of particular importance ? Or will any small form factor pc do the job ?
great video! thanks
Hey when do you plan to make an update to the Escape from Tarkov Netcode Fix?
absolutely amazing
This is kind of a tangent, but I am curious what anti-virus suite if any you're running. I think a test of latency, and performance impact would be an interesting video between some of the options out there. No gaming based channel has really delved into that.
. Yo, how dare you don't saying
Hi my name is Kris, and this is battlenonsense
Please go further with the DPI video Im very curious how lower the delay gets when you go up to DPIs like 25,600 currently I use 12,800 as a daily drive. Please make a video on this going in further detail with DPIs in the 5-25k thousands to see if there are any benefits of mouse accuracy at all.
This is why i live alone and don't plan on having kids. I just disable my wifi when i game.
well...if youre alone and its passworded whys it even matter?
I really want to see some tests of input lag with Nvidia image scaling (in Nvidia control panel) and fsr from battlenonsense
11:08 in the case of UPnP, you can have it in the LAN only not in the WAN for the same reason
One thing the old ui has features that aren’t finished being developed in the new ui
Why was pfSense was not a good fit?
Content Filtering is not session based (at least I have not found one that is, they are all DNS based)
UPnP is still not usable despite their recent attempts to fix it
Untangle just provides everything you need to get it done in one package - and the setup is relatively simple.
for the $50 dollar package how did you get past the 50 device limit? Or do you have less than 50 devices in your home? I would think IOT devices probably don't need web filtering?
You tag devices you want to run though the filter, everything else you leave untagged. The device will route an unlimited number of devices with any license, but will only filter 50 that you tag.
Please can you measure the idle power consumption of your mini PC? I have one running at under 10W and I was wondering if the UM250 is as low power?
Ok next video a DIY untangle build with a 10gb sfp+ nic gogogogogo
Did this Kid-Friendly video got demonetized, or why so little views?
Did you link the wrong device in the description? According to the spec sheet the UM250 only has 1 ethernet port!
By the way, any reason why you didn't choose a pc from qotom? They come with 4 to 8 Intel ethernet ports for fewer money
That store page is a bit of a mess. The "specs" tab is indeed wrong.
On the main landing page of the UM250 scroll down until you reach the "Buttons & Ports for UM250 Mini PC" section.
There you see an image of the back of the PC as well as a detail list of all ports, including "2x RJ45 Port" :)
The UM250 is so expensive, is there anything cheaper I could use?
please test if hdmi audio splitter making input lag or not, every one need it now for ps5 and xbsx&s
It would be great if you made a Video on the Fritz Box Router line or their Top Devices.
They aren't remotely as Customizable as others, but can be considered Jack of all Trades Devices.
subscribed cuz why not :)
has anything changed since this video? hardware? settings?
Does the version of PCI-E or Ram u use (DDR 4 or DDR 5) matter when it comes to input delay?
Please make a tickrate video for Battlefield 2042!! Also I hope you're doing well
so big question here is untangled better at QOS than edgerouter or the same
Where are you ? I was hopping to find you on Battlefield 2042
Just to let you know, they recently made an announcement stating they are no longer making videos. Check their community tab for more details.
Yo
Battle(non)sense
Discord server when?
Hello @Battle(non)sense ! Can you PLEASE!!! make a video about the server performance from hunt showdown... people are claiming it has an adaptive tickrate between 10 and 120 hz some say it is between 80 to 120 hz and the devs do not give out ANY information about the servers whatsoever... it feels like 30 ticks at most... i would highly appreciate a testing of that game... i love this game but i have the feeling that the servers have a lot of issues... i can buy you the game if you want to test it... it is a great game
My 2.4ghz scan looks nothing like that every channel being used by some neighbor and half of them on 40 mhz.
i have an old rig with a xeon cpu a quadro 2000 and 16 gb of ddr2 ram the problem is that valorant runs at 180 fps average on this pc however the latency is horrible and i cant figure out why since the fps is high, when i play with a friends pc the fps is lower but i statistically preform much much better and it feels extremely smooth.
My question is since both the gpu and cpu have a 70/ max load when running the game could it be the ram that is causing the latency ??? or should i just get rid of this rig and buy an actual gaming one ??
with the times of covid hackers are getting more persistent and even pegasus software is scary
