Considering the Spice Girls have only released 3 albums in total I thought it would be fun to do a mini discography journey with them.
Today, we begin with their debut album Spice released on September 19, 1996.
I can't believe it took me almost 24 years to listen to this album!
I found this record to be a fun listen bu I didn't know if I'm pulled into the Spice Girls fandom just quite yet.

Spice is the debut studio album by English girl group the Spice Girls. It was released on 19 September 1996 by Virgin Records. The album was recorded between 1995 and 1996 at Olympic Studios in Barnes, London, and Strongroom Studios in Shoreditch, London, by producers Matt Rowe and Richard Stannard, and the production duo Absolute. Spice is a pop album that incorporates styles such as dance, R&B and hip hop. It is considered to be the record that brought teen pop back, opening the doors for a wave of teen pop artists. Conceptually, the album centered on the idea of Girl Power, and the hype surrounding the group was compared to Beatlemania.
A worldwide commercial success, Spice peaked at number one in more than 17 countries across the world, and was certified Multi-Platinum in 27 countries, Platinum in 14 countries and Gold in three countries, including 10-times Platinum in the United Kingdom and Canada, eight-times Platinum in Europe, and seven-times Platinum in the United States. It became the world's top-selling album of 1997, selling 19 million copies in over a year. The album has sold a total of 23 million copies worldwide, becoming the best-selling album in music history by a girl group and one of the best-selling albums of all time.
Five singles were released from the album. The lead single, "Wannabe", reached number one in 35 countries, becoming one of the best-selling singles of all time and selling over six million copies worldwide. The next two singles, "Say You'll Be There" and "2 Become 1", reached number one in 53 countries. "Who Do You Think You Are" was released as the official Comic Relief single in the UK as a double A-side with "Mama" and both songs reached the top 20 in charts across Europe, Australia and New Zealand. In the band's native UK, all four singles went to number one on the UK Singles Chart and, on the Billboard Hot 100, the album spawned three top-five singles.
Dude Spice is a masterpiece. It's funky, sweet, pop, r&b, outspoken in times where there was no social media, tik toks and other bs platforms. They delivered when pop was not a thing.

the first album is much better than the second album as a whole.. but Spice World.. it was more rushed because of the film. they did the whole album in about 6 weeks.
Naked and Last Time Lover from Spice are underrated gems. Love Thing is a total spice classic which should have been a single, maybe a double side with naked. the demo of If you can't dance is very Raw and TLC
it's hard to explain but this album really was a cultural reset. there hasn't been a bigger musical phenomenon since (britney and gaga come close). they were more than a huge group, they were a lifestyle. they really don't get the credit they deserve for starting the teen pop and girl power movements, and on top of that, the music was excellent when it really didn't need to be! this album was nominated for the mercury prize which is England's most prestigious music award, moreso than the brits or the Grammys.

they were mega in Canada until the end of 2000, Forever and Holler was top 10 here. and played on the Canadian music stations on radio and TV. all of the corner stores & gas stations had the bubble gum and lollies with the stickers inside, the bigger stores had the posters, school supplies, dolls, live concert, clothing etc..
2010 at the Vancouver PNE, 'Stop' played on the ride i was on and every cheered very loud the moment it came on (it was epic), kids as young as 6 & 7 knew the dance moves.
1996 when Wannabe Came out. night time radio talk shows would spend quite some tome talking about the song, the group, and how nothing like that has been heard before.
I'm 39, straight, married and male, with 3 kids and the last gig I went to was Liam Gallagher, but I'll still smash this album whenever I get the chance. Particularly who do you think you are. Reminds me of being a teenager along with oasis and blur. The 90's rocked 👍🇬🇧

I met Mel B in London last year. I was attending 9 to 5 at the Savoy Theater, and met her outside. She was promoting her Brutally Honest one woman show, I ended up on the promotional video. She signed a flyer and my ticket for the show I was seeing that day, and I had a lovely picture with Mel. Her assistant got in touch with me online and offered two free tickets for being in the video. I couldn't attend, so Mel sent me a signed programme for helping. Great experience, Mel is so down to earth, and what you see is what you get.

Yeah the album holds up better than the film but the film is a great blast from the past, definitely Top 100 Movies Every Adult Should Watch While Drinking lol

Hey, loved your reaction. A few things that you mentioned in the video. 'Mama/Who Do You Think You Are' was never released in America and 'Something Kinda Funny' is about the girls themselves and how it was fate that they 'found' each other and became a group. They clicked straight away and hence the title and lyrics 'we've got something kinda funny going on'.

Love thing was originally suppose to be their first Single instead of Wannabe.
Love thing was also one of the very first songs they ever wrote together as a group when they got together in 1994.
Love thing is in fact the very first song they wrote that made it to their debut album Spice aside from Something Kinda Funny.

“Who Do You Think You Are” is actually one of their most iconic songs. They performed it at the 1997 BRITs Awards and one of them, Ginger Spice, came out using a Gucci dress with the British flag on it. She was everywhere the next day, and kinda embodied what the Spice Girls were and stood for.

Spice is a good album but for me Spiceworld is better, so much that it's in my Top 10 Favorite Albums Of All Time. You should check out Girls Aloud, they're the 2000s version of the Spice Girls. Out Of Control is particularly epic for me, definitely in my Top 100.

2 Become 1 has a strong safe sex message: ("Be a little bit wiser baby, put it on, put it on") which was quite out there for a group with a lot of young fans. Also, Last Time Lover was originally called First Time Lover but the record label made them change it.

The Spice Girls are unilaterally considered a Pop group but they're actually a mixture between Pop and R&B. The harmonies, the sounds and the vocals on their albums are more R&B-oriented than what people might think. The R&B album tracks are my favourites (SKF and N). My favourite hit single is however "Who Do You Think You Are" (Melanie C owns the song totally) followed by "2 Become 1" and "Say You'll Be There". My least favourite song is "If You Can't Dance" too! I loathe it. In the 90's I used to skip it and turn over to side A just to listen to Wannabe again 😂. Melanie C is the voice that sounds "womanly" to you. She immediately conquered me with her amazing voice, unique unmistakable vocal tone, original unconventional sporty looks and athletic moves in the videos "Wannabe" and "Say You'll Be There". She's the OG of the sporty look and the Voice of the group. She eventually went solo and became my favourite artist as well. She made great albums and had a great success as an independent artist. Mel C embodies talent, uniqueness and originality which is what I love.

The original title was "First Time Lover" as was about losing your virginity". They changed the lyrics and title to be less provocative.
OMG! I don't usually like REACTIONS but Sal, you remind me the time when I listened SPICE, for the first time. "SAY YOU'LL BE THERE" is an amazing video my fave one & I have to mention "HOLLER" (Forever) because it is one of my faves too.
"LOVE THING" should be a single.
I love the fact you like MAMA it is a beautiful song. My memory about this song is also related to a shocking moment in history. When Princess Diane of Wales, died in that terrible car accident back in 1997.
This song was included in her Tribute album. It was so meaningful because Prince William & Harry two little kids who were devastated, were close represented by this song in that album. They both loved the Spice Girls back then, specially Harry.
The world was in love with Princess Diane it still makes me feel emotional when I listen "Mama".
Yes we all remember the first time we got instantly in love with Melanie C. And believe me it will be forever.

Love Thing is a absolute banger. Such a fun song to just get down to.
Among the Spice Girl’s fandom it’s regarded as one of their best none single tracks hands down.
It’s also a song that the Spice Girls hold special to themselves as it’s one of the first songs they ever wrote and it’s the first song they wrote that made it on their debut album Spice along with Something Kinda Funny.
It was going to be their first single originally, but that changed to Wannabe which is crazy to think about.

The reunion tour was incredible and so was the sound. Unfortunately on their first show back they has major issues with their sound system. However it was all resolved and perfect after that 😁

I just recently re-listened to this album since I got the 25th anniversary edition of it and while I liked it, I do think their second album Spice World is much better (so I hope they do a 25th anniversary for that too). But it has some good songs- all the singles are great. I'm glad you enjoyed it some too and looking forward to watching the other two as well. By the way, to show how old I am and this is, I had the cassettes for their first two albums not the CDs lol.

This album is just so so good. I bet the more you listen, the more you love. I used to hate if u can’t dance and now it’s one of my favourites. The girls brought pop, with R&B, house, disco and just that raw 90s sound that they created. It’s weird you say you think wannabe and Love thing are similar as the record company wanted that to be the debut single but the girls fought for wannabe because there was nothing else like it. I still wish they later released love thing though. This album is all killer and no filler.

If you love Spice Girls, you will love Steps. Both bands started around the same time, but Steps saved 2020 with their comeback album What the future holds. Sia wrote the title track. So awesome. Bubblegum melancholy pop bangers and a few ballads. Their harmonies, vocals, melodies and key changes are soooooo good 👌❤️

This song is about a woman knowing where she stands when dating men.
This song released back in 1996 now almost has half a billion views on RUclips.
Due to British radio stations stigmas, they would've not played the girls if they found out they were British as it seems dull. They taught the girls were black American girls until the video aired.
2 - SAY YOU'LL BE THERE
This song is about telling a man to meet a woman half-way in a date or relationship
That's the song that sent the girls flying high

The song is basically about sex

the 2nd versions was done for British charity 'Comic Relief' where they cameoed British comedians dressed as The Spice Girls
8 - SOMETHING KINDA FUNNY
This song is about puppy love and crushing, the first level of dating basically.
That's one of the songs that led the girls to get signed at Virgin Records
9 - NAKED
This song talks about a woman who's possibly had a bad past so therefore she's very cautious of relationships she gets into. Able to see people for who they really are.
On their first world tour, they performed naked sitting behind chairs hiding their upper bodies, later replaced by their male dancers sitting naked on the chairs
10 - IF YOU CAN'T DANCE
This song is pretty self-explanatory. If the man can't dance on the dancefloor with that particular lady, he ain't the one the party with.
Geri (Ginger Spice) is half Spanish on her mother side, which explains her verse

Who Do You Think You Are/ Mama was a double A Side in Europe and the rest of the world but actually did not get released in the US. They had their second album out only a year later in November 1997 and released in the US a bit later than in Europe with their debut so 2 Become 1 was still on the charts in September/ October and they had Spiceworld lined up for worldwide release in November and Spice Up You Life as single in October so really there was no time to release Who Do You Think You Are in the US unless they'd have to push back the second album in the US. I think they could have sold even more of Spice if they had pushed it some more.

I did. I've always thought the lyric change unnecessary. I say this as A GAY MAN. It's weird to me to think the lyric "boys and girls go good together" was viewed as anti-gay.
Ill let you in on who was who vocally
Geri (also.known as Ginger Spice, wrote about 3/4 of the lyrics (and because her mother is Spanish she wrote the Spanish raps) she was the leader of the group, wore union jack dresses and had red hair) had the sultry deep voice she sung the "treat me right/all night" lyrics in "Last Time Lover" lines
Melanie B (also known as Scary Spice she is a African- British girl very wild outspoken and fierce! )had a louder deep voice "she usually sang low with Geri
Melanie C (aka Sporty Spice, she wore Adidas sweats and runners.with her hair in a ponytail) was the "Whitney" of the group
Victoria (also known as Posh Spice-aka Victoria Beckham) you dont hear much of
Emma (also known as Baby Spice, had blonde hair and was girly) had the sweet innocent voice (she sung the "tonight is tonight when two become one" line)

yes, it was a double a-side CD single that came out in the UK, maybe elsewhere, but not in the USA (no idea why, though I can guess the reason) and if you go on exploring the SGs' singles releases you'll find that 'Mama' got a little remix thus turned into a shorter, more polished and radio friendly version, same with WDYTYA - radio mix with a little touch on intstruments in break before the second verse (easy to hear it ✌🎧)

The single version of “2 Become 1” is better as they changed a verse. It went from Geri singing “boys and girls go good together” to Victoria singing “love will bring us back together”. Better lyric and vocal.

I understand that there are copyrights and you're listening to music critically but for me it's a grave mistake... It's unbeliveable how It's possible to stop those tracks, jump through them, not to listen every second of them (!?!), e.g. the intro of Say you'll be there - it's got the atmosphere... But all in all I'm glad you like some songs.
