The reason why they had a different actress sing "Soon You'll Come Home" was because Judith was going through a lot of trauma and abuse by her father at the time, which unfortunately led up to her tragic murder. Judith did try to sing the song, but couldn't and burst into tears, since the song reminded her of how she wanted her family to be normal again, but it unfortunately wasn't.
That poor girl was failed by so many people. Surrounded by so many, but still nobody protected her. Her father was known by many to be a sick piece of shit. Yes her mother is a victim too, but my mother also kept me close to my abusive father and there is no excuse to keep your child around someone who harms them. CPS allowed her mother to do so. The censorship really did seem to cut into the pacing and tone. I would love to see a recut that embraces the pg rating. I believe the two stories were meant to blend much better.
@@biancawhallon6337 I found it interesting and a little frightening at the same time. I think it does more good than harm. With Land Before Time, I learned to confront sadness and pain (mom left when I was 3), instead of dousing it in weed and other B.S. crap that doesn't work, but yet so many people try and fail with, anyway. With the hell scene in All Dogs Go To Heaven, I expanded my imagination's palette and learned to face fear a little more effectively. There's a "cool factor" to the "devil" in this film. Like, seriously cool. If we didn't like this dark and twisted crap so much, there wouldn't be a million death metal bands, D&D dragons and video games with just about the most Demonic armor imaginable as the "high tier set".
The gun censorship was because the Judith the girl who voice Anne Marie was killed by her father shooting her in her sleep. So when the film was edited they removed the gun because of it
According to Don Bluth, when they first cast Burt Reynolds, he came to the studio and recorded his lines with a daft 'Dog' voice he thought was brilliant, but because he was a big star, they didn't dare tell him it was bad. So Bluth went to Dom DeLuise and asked what he should do, DeLuise said 'get me in the booth with him and i'll sort it out.' Working with Dom DeLuise, Reynolds started having a blast, forgot about the dog voice, and they quickly got in to the dynamic we hear in the film.
This is my personal favourite Don Bluth movie and one of my all time favourite animated films. Yes, it is flawed and the plot's a bit confused at times...but to me it has one of the most touching endings I've ever seen, one that I saw as a child and stayed with me for decades, even when I hadn't watched it in years and forgotten almost everything else in the movie.
@@TheRiiiight I think they were more going for the fact that the Ten Commandments have been broken so often by people who say that practice them but break them all the time.
Quite honestly, after hearing and learning about Judith Barsi's murder and watching this movie, it gave me a new view of it. This was the last movie she starred in and the last lines Ann Marie said felt like her goodbyes. Makes me cry even harder when I was the ending.
Sorry about your dog. Lost mine a few months ago during the school year when I had bronchitis. My dad was devastated when he had to go and see her get put down.
They had to get someone else to sing Ann Marie's song. Judith tried to sing it, but apparently she kept breaking into tears in the middle.... which makes that song more depressing when you know what happened to her....
I was really confused about the cut in the car hitting Charlie scene because when I was a kid, I distinctly remember the Dutch dubbed movie to actually INCLUDE Charlie getting hit and it was basically an action-packed hit where Charlie's basically moving through time and space and into heaven. Unfortunately, i dont have the old original cassette tape of the movie anymore so I can't go check it out but yeah, not sure if the Dutch dubbed one just wasn't cut or if later versions of the movie were cut and edited to change it? I remember it had this cool strobe-lighting kinda effect and focused on a lot of red-yellow-purple colours which kind of emphasised the original scene a lot. I also remember before they hit the water seeing Charlie being pinned by the car's bumper before he hit the water - which.... didn't scar me for life? Anyway, I think the earlier versions of the movie didn't have that scene cut or edited and later versions of it did. Edit: Mind the last time I actually saw the original taped version of the movie I was like? 12 or 13? So a good 11-12 years ago.

This is an underrated set of movies (there are 2) but they each have a dark tone to them. They're anime movies from the 80s based around Unico. 1st movie is the Adventures of Unico and the 2nd movie is Unico and the Island of Magic. I hope those titles are accurate. Anyway those are childhood favs of mine and I don't see many reviewers talk about them. This review was good, I enjoyed it. Land Before Time was the movie that scarred me as a kid.
Napalm1967 I do, which may be another reason why I don’t like the sequel because instead of Burt Reynolds they had Charlie Sheen do the voice of Charlie.
Napalm1967 I did as a kid and I kind of still do as an adult As a kid I think I had a mini crush My sister and me would pretend to be Charlie and the angel dog it was really funny When we were kids we would pretend a lot my sisters and me we really like the scene with Charlie steals the watch so weird bunch of other objects hanging up in this small area of the room pretending it was heaven for the movie Then I Charlie would reenact the scene stealing the watch it was really fun
Judith basically made my childhood. With The Land Before Time and All Dogs Go To heaven being my two favorite movies growing up. When I got older and discovered what happened to her it broke my heart.
Wow I never realized how similar the plot of this film was to Monsters, Inc. Even down to the little girl and the best friend sidekick character. The only difference is that Sulley isn't friends with Randal at the beginning haha. And being that film works I think that's why this film works. Sulley too changed goals. He was obsessed with being the big monster on campus. But then was concerned with saving the little girl. It's not that the focus of the main character changes is an issue, but rather that their focus changes because they end up loving the inocense and joy of the little girl which is worth changing for.

And while my main interest is in live action movies, I am the type of person that can watch any type of movie and appreciate it as long as its well made. And i have to say that animation isnt getting the love and care it deserves. You can do so much with animation. And your channel is one of the few i think realises that. Obviously the fascination stuck (just look at my name and pic on here), but I remember as a kid being intensely drawn into the Hell sequence. I loved the movie, but that was always my favorite thing (along with Disney's Bald Mountain scene in Fantasia.)
Judith had a very tough time doing this film. She was very emotionally stressed because of the abuse going on at home. The reason another actress sings Anne Marie’s song is because Judith had a full on emotional breakdown on set. This then lead to her agent finding out about the abuse.
So sorry about your dog Steve :(. Thanks so much for putting these reviews together! I would love it if you did more Don Bluth reviews like the secret of Nimh and An American Tail!

Being a mother myself I have trouble watching Anne Marie's scenes knowing what I know. That poor sweet baby angel, I cry just thinking about it. However, this is still a wonderful movie even watching as an adult. I get a lot more of the jokes now. I never ever noticed before how much the ray gun did not look at all like a ray gun. Loved this review, and I really loved how you talked about the deleted scenes, and obscure little facts about this film too! I have a suggestion for a film to review, which is centered around dogs but it’s pretty dark and at times depressing. It’s the 2019 Korean film Underdog.
Wow....I have a lot of things to say about this one. Well first of all I did grow up with the VHS and I adored this one when I was little. Though I never really understood the plot very much. Like how is a child supposed to understand gangsters gambling drinking and all that jazz. But now that I am older and can understand it a lot better. I appreciate the darker tones and more mature scenes......(AND the fact it takes place in Louisiana my home :P) My thoughts on the big lipped alligator scene. Well for one Car faces Casino has a bunch of signs in front of it saying no alligators allowed...so maybe it alludes to his deep fear of Gators? It makes sense since the big lipped alligator ate him at the end so that's how I think it ties together. Not to mention its New Orleans...Mardi Gras....I mean New Orleans is the city that care forgot so that explains the song number.\_(0_0)_/ Idk. But overall I love this film. Also R.I.P teddy. :'(
I grew up with Gangster themes in films/cartoons, I understood it perfectly. kinda grew up wanting to be a gangster as i was bullied as a teenager, still am, by the same fucking people, at 29! I neeeeed to be in mafia to get some... respecc

I dunno, besides "Can't Keep a Good Dog Down" I feel that "Let me be Surprised" was a memorable song as well as it called into question that idea of everlasting paradise and how boring it could be, as evident In Charley's distain for everything being so peaceful and orderly compared to the thrill of not knowing what to expect. "Today there's sun, they said there'd be snow. When all's said and done it's fun not to know. What keeps my heart humming is guessing what's coming, let me be surprised!" countered with the angel trying to convince Charley that life is harsh and cold compared to the tranquil eternity of the afterlife. "But Charley please remember down there's a world of used cars, singles bars, broken dreams and hard to reach stars!" I dunno. it just kinda stuck with me growing up in a Christian family and all.
Also as an added "Funny Meme" joke to pep up the mood a bit; Charley: "You mean there are no surprises here?" Angel: "Oh no no no we know everything." Charley: "You mean if I'm waiting for an inside straight up here I'd know in advance if I filled it?" Angel: "We know how it all turns out." Chaley: Side glances the audience as if to say, *"Yo, I'm about to end this chick's WHOLE CAREER..."*
Has anyone else seen the sequel to this film? I actually saw All Dogs Go To Heaven 2 before seeing the original 😂 It was straight to VHS and Don Bluth as far as I know wasn't involved. The censorship really did seem to cut into the pacing and tone. I would love to see a recut that embraces the pg rating. I believe the two stories were meant to blend much better.
I never noticed as a kid, cuz kids are dumb, but as an adult it's really, really distracting. I wish we were able to see a director's cut of this.
Such is true of censorship often. Most censorship (especially here in America) does more to damage the quality of Art more than it helps it.
@@biancawhallon6337
I found it interesting and a little frightening at the same time.
So when the film was edited they removed the gun because of it
@@biancawhallon6337 it is. There's a song in this film made after she was killed and its dedicated to her
According to Don Bluth, when they first cast Burt Reynolds, he came to the studio and recorded his lines with a daft 'Dog' voice he thought was brilliant, but because he was a big star, they didn't dare tell him it was bad.
In the words of a veeeeerrrrryyyyy nostalgic critic, the alligator song was...
"A BIG LIPPED ALIGATOR MOMENT!"

Could you review the other two Don Bluth classics, Secret Of Nimh and An American Tail, as well?

Quite honestly, after hearing and learning about Judith Barsi's murder and watching this movie, it gave me a new view of it. This was the last movie she starred in and the last lines Ann Marie said felt like her goodbyes. Makes me cry even harder when I was the ending.
Sorry about your dog. Lost mine a few months ago during the school year when I had bronchitis. My dad was devastated when he had to go and see her get put down.
This review definitely made me realize some things I didn’t notice because of my nostalgia for the film, as it’s probably my favorite animated movie.
Sorry about the loss of your furbaby. It's always hard to loose an animal. Glad you reviewed this, always have a soft spot for Don Bluths work.

Anyway those are childhood favs of mine and I don't see many reviewers talk about them.

man that ending scene always gives me all the feels. Even now. I only have to see a few seconds of it and tears starts rolling.

I think you should do more reviews on animated movies that arent just dark but just straight up amazing. Im extremely passionate about filmmaking and want to become a filmmaker myself. Can you review Don Bluth’s “Thumblina” and “Rock-a-Doodle”
Judith had a very tough time doing this film. She was very emotionally stressed because of the abuse going on at home. The reason another actress sings Anne Marie’s song is because Judith had a full on emotional breakdown on set. This then lead to her agent finding out about the abuse.

I remember watching this movie as a kid and while I never really remembered any one scene the most, I do recall liking it quite a bit and I vaguely remember the scene for the one song where the puppies are eating pizza.
Why was this split into two videos?

Being a mother myself I have trouble watching Anne Marie's scenes knowing what I know. That poor sweet baby angel, I cry just thinking about it. However, this is still a wonderful movie even watching as an adult. I get a lot more of the jokes now. I never ever noticed before how much the ray gun did not look at all like a ray gun. Seven year old Leslie did notice how ineffective it seemed but assumed it was supposed to be a toy and the dog was just dumb. I have been seeing you pop up on my suggested viewing and now I am going to subscribe. I look forward to binging on your videos so I have a chance to catch up.
Fun fact: The alligator is voiced by Ken Page, a.k.a, Oogie Boogie.

What keeps my heart humming is guessing what's coming, let me be surprised!"
countered with the angel trying to convince Charley that life is harsh and cold compared to the
tranquil eternity of the afterlife.
"But Charley please remember down there's a world of used cars, singles bars, broken dreams and hard to reach stars!"
I dunno. it just kinda stuck with me growing up in a Christian family and all.
Also as an added "Funny Meme" joke to pep up the mood a bit;
Charley: "You mean there are no surprises here?"
Angel: "Oh no no no we know everything."
Charley: "You mean if I'm waiting for an inside straight up here I'd know in advance if I filled it?"
Angel: "We know how it all turns out."
Chaley: Side glances the audience as if to say, *"Yo, I'm about to end this chick's WHOLE CAREER..."*
