Actually, the novel is way, wayyyy darker. The rats are everywhere. They sing disturbing songs in Coraline's dreams and everything in the other world is organic and decaying. Also the tunnel to the other world is alive. It's an ancient being, far older than the Beldam.
The Dom made review of this adaptation and from what he told this tunnel sounds terryfing. Every time Coraline was in it she sensed SOMETHING behind her. Something old that was creeping onto her, slowly but steadly.
The reason Coraline has such calm reactions to these bizarre scenes is because of her personality; She’s innocent and wants to explore, but is slightly skeptical. Ex: When she arrives in the alternate universe, she just wants to explore, when she sees something disturbing, she tries to hide her fear, when she’s told she’s in danger, she brushes it off and assumes she’s tough enough to fight the danger off!

When a cat brings their owner dead things it's taken as a show of affection. Wyborn getting excited about it (although from his tone it's more of sarcastic goofy excitement) comes from the fact that he knows what it means when a cat does that. Even though he doesn't consider the cat his he still appreciates the sentiment. I've known plenty of cat owners who get excited when their cat brings them a dead mouse or bird or things like that and they're clearly not serial killers or anything like that- I guess it's an Oregon thing to be excited about stuff like that. it's like getting excited when you call your dog's name for the first time and they come to you, or you teach them a new trick or if you own a dog that was bred for hunting and they get their first kill. Things like that show that your pet loves you or at least cares about you.
Exactly! I feel like a lot of little things like this put him off when it’s really not all that strange. And I felt like he just didn’t like Wyborn at all.
To be fair, I think he was just playing that up for laughs. Wyborn is rather socially awkward and it can come off as creepy...I should know, I was/am like that myself, but you two have good points as well.
That’s a good point too! My only problem is that if it’s being done for laughs, the joke is at Wyborn’s expense. What’s funny about calling a kid a future serial killer? About calling him a mistake? Saying that his parents called him Wyborn because they didn’t want him? Sure, he’s not real, but if he was, what would be funny about that? Nothing. It’s just mean-spirited.
I live in Oregon and I own cats and I can agree that most cat owners get excited over dead animals on their doorsteps. Although my cat is a little silly.. she brings me giant worms after it rains thinking that they're snakes
@@angelangelis8362 I understood that it might have been made as a joke, I just wanted to clarify that getting excited about things like that is natural- especially if that animal is your only source of affection- just in case someone might have thought it was weird to be like that.
10:47 Why would you skip the Banana Slug scene?! That helped build up the friendship between Coraline and Wybie, and also showed that he was not stalking her.
I like how Wybie looks at the banana slug and goes like “huh?” with a confused expression. It really shows how he almost compared himself to a slug. I always chuckle when I watch that scene.

Imagine if there will be a sequel to Coraline, where she was all grown up and has a child of her own. Then, the Other Mother snatches them and Coraline decided to confront her childhood fears to bring her kid back. I THINK THIS WILL BE GREAT IDEA.
I remembered watching the original trailer saying from the director of the nightmare before Christmas or I was talking about corpse bride, I feel lied to
4:30 WHAT!?! The opening title is amazing, you can only wonder how something like that was made. Stop motion is truly amazing, too bad you failed to see how creative that scene was.
I feel like at the beginning of Coraline when the Beldam was making the Coraline doll, the Beldam was changing into the form of Coraline's mom, if that makes sense. What I mean is that in the first half of the song, you here a woman with a deep humming voice, (she sounds like a black woman) and the doll was a black girl (Wybie's grandma's sister) who was a victim before Coraline. And in the second half of the beginning, you here Coraline's mom humming the song as the Coraline doll was being made. But thats just a theory...
I remember my teacher reading the book to us in 5th grade and I enjoyed it. I love the movie even to this day. I also thought it was cool finding out they created Wybee for Coraline to talk to because in the book she talks to herself most of the time, and so for the audience to not see her as crazy they created him.
A theory is that she's so accepting of all of these events is because at first, it's so surreal that it can only be a dream, and you tend to be more accepting of things in a dream. It's only with the offer to stay permanently with button eyes that she realizes it's actually all real, and a real threat.
Makin up a song about Coraline She's a peach, she's a *doll* She's a pal of miiine She's as cute as a *button in the eyes* of everyone who's ever layed their eyes on Coraline
One thing that I saw on Wikipedia is that the Beldam’s food is extremely dangerous, since it will cause the consumer to fall for the illusions more easily. Probably why Coraline wasn’t noticing any red flags until the button eye offer came up
Huh, never thought about them as lesbians, but that's an option. But yeah, no sisters - miss Spink and miss Forcible, different surnames, that's why it never even occurred to me...
Yeah right?! I loved it soooo so much but I was too scared at the same time everytime I watched it I was having nightmares all night. I was 9-10 years old I guess.
12:15 I did notice while I was watching this film the other day, even though the cat says "I just can," he ONLY talks in the supernatural realm. When the cat returns to the real world with Coraline, even though he can still understand her, he can only communicate in meows.
I watched this show when I was a kid and when that scene where the lady was naked I was like WTF? Also near the end or the “ other mother “ kind of TERRIFIED me
I'm here trying to do an assignment on this movie because I love it so much and completely forgot about this scene so I got startled when it showed up early in the vid LOL. My mum and sis would always make sure i'd never see it.
Agent Trash exactly. People are over dramatic about this kind of stuff. If they really knew what a psychopath was, they’d know these kids aren’t psychopathic at all.
Even though some of Corallines choices might be odd or don’t make sense, remember this is a kid who is bored out of her mind, has parents that are always busy or won’t help, and is feeling slightly rebellious because she’s still mad they made her move away from her friends. Most if not all of her reactions and choices make sense, sure if your older and watching this you would be like “why would you go through that tunnel” but as kids who don’t know everything like red flags and much more, her choices make a lot of sense and as a kid who grew up exactly like Coralline (I mean have parents who were always busy and just weren’t there when I needed help, moving away from all my friends to a old house and etc) I would of done the exact things she would of and had very similar reactions.
Fun fact: One day I sat down to properly watch Coraline, but the opening doll sequence freaked me out so much that I was just like, "Nah. Not doing it."
I think you’re reviewing this too harshly. You’re holding it to the same standards as an adult film, and while it might be pretty horrific for a children’s film, that is what it is and should be reviewed as such.
9:12 there is something i'm surprised you missed but in his song the other father is trying to warn coraline here are two lines from his song that stand out "shes a doll" "shes as cute as a button in the eyes" see what i mean
I think her reactions are accurate. The movie clearly makes it out like Coraline is not like other "ordinary" girls. She is a little weird, quirky and at times mean spirited, so her not really being phased by all the weird stuff and warnings seems in character for her. She is spirited but also has a sort of edge to her, so she just blows it off like its no big deal or all just hoax warnings and "tall tales".
If Whyborn is a serial killer in the making, then Coraline is a serial killer victim in the making, considering her complete lack of a sense of danger.
One thing I always found extra creepy that few seem to pick up on is even after the Beldam reveals it's true forms it continues to talk in Coraline's mother's voice. We never hear it's real voice and Coraline now has this monster talking to her in her mother's voice.
Dark Devil They’re called Laika, but yes definitely! Would 100 % recommend people to check put their other movies (like Kubo and The Two Strings, Box Trolls, Paranorman, Corpse Bride etc)
I think Coraline’s not very scared or unsettled by the Other World because it implies the first two times she visited it in her dream. You often are more relaxed and curious in a dream than in real life.
heres a little story: when school was ending, i had civics class, and since we didn’t have work we decided to watch this film, it was a very entertaining film although we had to end the film when Caroline was talking to the other mother about hide and seek (the scene that i think is close to the ending of the movie) but when that scene (1:05) came up we were shocked and we told the teacher to skip that part, i never EVER expected that kind of a scene to be in a kids film.

Btw, Coraline also came out the same year as 9. Which people say Coraline is the reason 9 is not popular.
people also seem to miss out that 9 had the same release date as the dorian grey film.
Eh, 9 is certainly not on the same level as Coraline, I've watched it multiple times since it's released and still don't remember what it's really about. Personally I don't believe it wouldn't be as popular even if Coraline wasn't in the spotlight :/
In the dvd release of coraline There is actually a trailer for nine
I've never actually seen 9 but I remember everytime I watched Coraline I saw a trailer for 9.

Are you kidding me!? That's scene is freaking creepy! If you can't see that then you insane!
I think everything was too creepy for him.
A FILM THEORY!
That's a very good theory
Good theory but you can’t sound like a “black woman”

I remember my teacher reading the book to us in 5th grade and I enjoyed it. I love the movie even to this day. I also thought it was cool finding out they created Wybee for Coraline to talk to because in the book she talks to herself most of the time, and so for the audience to not see her as crazy they created him.
4:22 I don't think it's the opposite at all, I actually love that scene. Though I also like making and repairing plushies so maybe that's why.
When he says the opposite what he means is that the doll repair scene in this movie is creepy while the one in toy story is anything but.

We've made it, we actually made it!
A theory is that she's so accepting of all of these events is because at first, it's so surreal that it can only be a dream, and you tend to be more accepting of things in a dream. It's only with the offer to stay permanently with button eyes that she realizes it's actually all real, and a real threat.
i would like to reassure those who haven’t read the novel that the cat literally has the exact same reason for being able to talk in the book.

One thing that I saw on Wikipedia is that the Beldam’s food is extremely dangerous, since it will cause the consumer to fall for the illusions more easily. Probably why Coraline wasn’t noticing any red flags until the button eye offer came up
Okay. Wow that kinda makes a lot of sense especially bc she makes food that appeals to kids like cake and smoothies

“¿Now how do you suppose that we’ll react to you using the same joke over and over again?”

I think Coraline’s not very scared or unsettled by the Other World because it implies the first two times she visited it in her dream. You often are more relaxed and curious in a dream than in real life.
The Coraline doll making scene is way more satisfying to me than the Woody fixing scene (which I never found satisfying ngl).
heres a little story: when school was ending, i had civics class, and since we didn’t have work we decided to watch this film, it was a very entertaining film although we had to end the film when Caroline was talking to the other mother about hide and seek (the scene that i think is close to the ending of the movie) but when that scene (1:05) came up we were shocked and we told the teacher to skip that part, i never EVER expected that kind of a scene to be in a kids film.
She's not showing anything. It's meant to be a performance with artistic nudity. The human body (including the female body) isn't inherently sexual.
@@SepticShockAKAVinI mean.. she grabs her boobs, which are specifically enormous, and there's definitely emphasis on the jiggle, like come on. if anything, she *thinks* it's more artistic than sexual.
