    I was so mad when Santa turned out to be the villain, he gave a wonderful explanation as to why he didn't pick candy, the job is all about delivering presents to kids and someone who can't connect with kids is just wrong for the job. Why did they have to go for the cliche twist villain trope when he was doing so well?

      Most likely because as an audience, we were expecting the series to be summed up with that speech and for Candy to learn a life lesson that would've progressed her as a character (as is expected in the Christmas specials this series was satirizing.)
      But, no. They just went: "Screw it", and went with the cliche ending BECAUSE it was unexpected (and Somehow that is supposed to be funny.)

    That Santa scene is actually incredible. When Santa saw how she interacted with children, he realized that she didn't want the position to bring joy to the world, she wanted the position just so she could be the first female Santa. While Santa liked her and her ideas, he realized that she didn't have her heart in the right place and someone with that attitude towards the job and towards children could never be a worthy Santa that children around the globe would write to. Like how are you gonna be Santa if you don't even want to read the kid's letters? It's a shame that they missed this and made Santa out to be the villain. The show would've probably been much better if episode 6 was the last episode.

      Yeah someone that has big ambitions just for the sake of ambition can only lead to disaster, it's not even somebody with good intentions that unintentionally hurt others, if someone just wants something to mark their name in the stars they'll do anything to achieve it no matter how many must be left behind or atrocities must be commited

    I actually agreed with Santa when he chose Devin as the next Santa Claus. Like, Candy is more of a person who just wants to get the work right. She didn't seem to care about the kids. She only cared about perfect delivery. And when she said "Fuck you" to Santa, I was like "Bruh, he has a point. You don't give a crap about children".

    Men can be abused and it's honestly disgusting that this type of normalisation on abuse cause the person who's reserving it is a guy, abusive relationships can happen to anyone regardless of gender and we shouldn't be downplaying and making jokes about it when the person receiving said abuse is a guy

      @@TSBJunkie Honestly this is a really common issue with shows; they have someone be the villian and do some bad things and just expect us to forget that no they actually have a very valid point. Like all things the "for the greater good" argument isn't a binary "you said it so you're wrong" thing and a lot of shows have the villains making very excellent points that no, seriously, they may be right this may be a necessary thing but shrug it off just because "oh well, they're the villain so it doesn't count". Sometimes it seems sort of intentional like we're not supposed to just assume the protagonists are actually the defacto good guys and there is nuance, but other times it just feels like the writers didn't bother to think about what the villains were actually fighting for long enough.
      (in hindsight, not just shows, I can think of movies, games, books, all sorts of crap that has this issue.)

      @f-22raptorlandingzone30 Год назад +86

      It could have redeemed itself, the simplistic petty "go fuck yourself" could've been a cold closing to the scene used to communicate that candy is still not getting it or something and will learn the hard way, y'know to go with the 10 million other clearly intentionally communicated character flaws including the primary reason of the discussion of not being good with kids. Where the show really fucks up is when they wasted all of that by making Santa actually "bad" in the most forced way possible. "Because anytime someone you antagonize gives you an answer you don't want that countless people more driven than you have to make do with, it must be because they're lying snakes!!!" I think it could have been saved, but not by THOSE writers. The moment Candy said f off and walked away, it could have been the starting point where the show began showing the environment not from Candy's perspective, but from a third person, objectively this time. Progressively we learn how Santa has been right all along, while we gradually see Candy becoming the villain, going down a path of ignorance and hate against all those who denied her dominance over the company, revealing how she doesn't care about making kids happy, but more about her gaining full control over the place and establishing her rules. It could be easily achievable, considering how toxic her character was shown to be since the begining... But I guess the people who run it sympathise more with her than they do with anyone else.

    Santa’s reason on episode 6 moment really hit home with me.
    My sister always talks about how she wants a baby one day, but from what I’ve seen she hates being around kids. I try to explain to her how that there’s a difference between wanting a baby and wanting to be a mother, she said that she’ll learn eventually but ik she doesn’t have maternal instincts.
    Whenever we babysit our younger cousins she only wants to hold and play with the babies but when the actual responsibilities come to play (such as feeding, changing and bathing and helping them sleep and when they start crying) she leaves me to do the work. Once the babies turn to kids she starts to ignore them.
    I don’t think that she’s intentionally bad with kids it’s just like what Santa says “you either have it or you don’t.”
    She also is on the spectrum so I don’t blame her if it’s too overwhelming, it sometimes frustrates me when she says she wants a family but won’t work for it.

    The scene with Santa on the bench reminds me of a plot thread in the Artemis Fowl books. One of the protagonists is basically what amounts to the first female police officer, and the commander relentlessly calls out every little mistake she makes, and way more harsh to her than any of the male officers. And when she finally confronts him about it, he basically says "Yes. I am absolutely being harder on you because you are a woman. But that's only because everyone else is going to be judging you unfairly. I need to push you to be more than average, you have to be exceptional, otherwise they will never give other women the chance to do what you are doing."

    The problem is Seth Rogan tried way too hard to be progressive, and in doing so, he became offensive himself. He wasn’t telling a story, he was giving a political statement, and that’s the biggest problem here. There’s nothing wrong with having a message about racial diversity or inclusiveness, but you need to make it a good story with good characters first, and the message comes second. That way, the audience will be willing to follow the story, and thus would be more receptive to the message. If the message is all that your story has going for it, you risk alienating your audience, especially if not everyone wants a message shoved down their throat. Especially with Santa Inc. where they went really overboard with their message that they forgot to make the story compelling and their characters likeable. Everyone is either mean or abusive or both, and Candy, who we’re supposed to be rooting for, is an angry feminist who doesn’t care about making friends or who actually believes in her cause. She treats everyone like a means to an end at best or an enemy at worst, and that makes her unlikeable. That is exactly the wrong way to give the message, because if we can’t like anyone, we’ll have no desire to stick with them, and thus the message is lost. In order to give your message, you need to first give a good story with likeable characters.

    • @sygos
      @sygos 2 года назад

      The problem is, racial diversity and inclusiveness isn't what they promote. Santa is a white male so he cannot be Santa anymore. Why exclude white men from the job?

      You perfectly summed up the right way to handle representation. When writers don't actually care, or they focus more on being inclusive rather than the character themself, you often end up with a boring, rude, or sometimes offensive character as a result. The character still needs to be interesting. The audience should be able to sympathize with them. It doesn’t matter what race or gender the character is, if they're poorly written people aren't going to care about them.

Taking everything to the extreme and ruling everyone up so bad in the process that she effectively destroyed Christmas that year, and would justify ruining everyone’s holiday and the careers of Santa Inc. employees by saying “we can rebuild a new Christmas, better than ever” and then spout these ideas that make everyone feel uncomfortable because it wouldn’t even feel like Christmas with them. The. She says F*#k all of you, leaves the village and then Christmas was officially bought by Amazon, now being a true soulless conglomerate instead of the magical, love thy neighbor time of year it has been for centuries, and we all had to thank one little elf who focused so much on the bad she saw, that it was all she ever welcomed, and never saw the good in what was happening, because it didn’t involve her getting her way the way she wanted it.
    A super bummer ending indeed, but at least it would have stuck the landing on so many levels and at least be a decent satire and even cautionary tale on what’s practically happening now with Christmas and how people are acting, especially when trying to solve a problem they genuinely wanted to solve instead of transforming it into something else entirely. That’s just my opinion though. Please don’t treat me like Candy and the gang treats everyone on the show for this. 🥺

    You know, that great speech that they end up fucking up, about the role of Santa going to someone best deserving of it not based on competency with the other aspects of the role, but care towards children, was done PERFECTLY in Arthur Christmas. Like that movie showed the person realizing he wasnt deserving of the role of Santa that he wanted for years, and it was better suited for his brother, who went above and beyond just to get a little girl her bike for Christmas.
    Go watch Arthur Christmas to cleanse this series out of your palette. It's funnier and more compelling than Seth Rogen's excrement

    7:36 I think we should take a second look at this, notice how they’re trying to say sexual harassment is bad by having a man do it, yet they’re fine with having a woman do it and have it as a joke. I personally think this is kind of rude, as if to say a woman can’t harass a man, a double standard in the show, just like the cookie abuse joke.

    I think you're the first reviewer on RUclips that I've seen to have ACTUALLY WATCHED _all_ *8 episodes* of this crap-show before reviewing it. And I say this as someone who did not (and who happily has *no intentions* to *EVER)* watch this absolute _mess_ of a travesty. Most reviews I've seen of this show never even mention the "twist" from the Santa character, so I honestly had _no clue_ about this plot point.
    @ *Steve Reviews,* _this_ is what I like about you and your channel. When you review something, you GENUINELY give it a chance, no matter how bad it is, no matter what the "popular" opinion is about it. You judge things for YOURSELF. I am suddenly conscious of the fact that I am perhaps far too lenient in regards to what I am willing to overlook in other channels. While it was obvious from the get-go that _Santa, Inc._ was going to be "bad", I admit that I had no problems with watching other channels completely crap on the show WITHOUT actually providing any solid examples of _WHY_ they thought it was "bad" (beyond the crude jokes and stupid potty humor seen in the trailers).
    *Steve,* your review actually reminded me that, yes...this show IS _bad._ But it's _bad_ due to *FAR MORE* than what we saw in the trailers. As always, I am NEVER disappointed in an upload from you. ❤️

However, the reason they can attempt to play it up for laughs when the power dynamic is in the woman’s favor is one of the basic rules of offensive comedy: punching up. tbf, I think a decent counter argument could have been written, especially with his last point, to not make candy come off as an entitle bitch and really make what Santa says look even better. They could have just had her say something along the lines of "while appreciate the ability to implement my changes in the background i still feel like this a let down as i don't like a precedent of this guy just getting the spotlight and credit while somebody is stuck in the background doing all the work. I think people should have recognition for the work they do yada yada yada."
      the show would probable need other changes, and people may not agree with whatever counter argument they came up with, but it could have been interesting. I think the writers just had their heads so far up their own ass they didn't think they needed to actually write a counter cause they just assumed their audience would see what Santa was saying on the same level as " blacks had it better during slavery"

    Modern Entertainment for the majority, sacrifices character for checklists and tokens. Thus getting rid of the heart. I always bring up 90s X-Men and 90s Batman ANIMATED. Storm wasn't a black woman, she was a kick ass super hero and amazing mother figure that just happened to be black. Jean Grey wasn't great because of her gender, but her power. And for 90s Batman I always point to ONE episode; "Girl's Night Out", I want to say it's called. Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy accidentally rob the same museum and bump into each other. Harley trips the alarm, and they both flee together with the prize they were after. Ivy wanted some rare seed, and Harley a jewel (if I remember correctly). The end scene is great. Poison Ivy gets on a Feminist Soap Box talking about how she's a criminal to prove women are just as capable as men at being super villains or some nonsense. TO WHICH Harley Quinn beautifully replies; "Yeah, I don't know about any of that, I just do this for the thrill, not as a huge statement." And that's why That character was awesome. A wholly invented character for the Animated Series. Back when women used their sex appeal as a disarming tool in their arsenal but also had great brains as well. Poison Ivy was a world renowned botanist, Quinn grade-A psychologist/psychiatrist, and so on. The only failure in 90s Animated was Jubilee, and that's because she was a gimmick first and never a character. She was an audience foil with a crappy power.

      It's a shame cause the animation looks nice.

      @@am2382 to be honest this is kind of a blessing in disguise because future creatures will look at this and say yeah definitely not going to do that

      Exactly. As someone in the animation industry I've seen how incredibly difficult it is to have your ideas pitched and greenlit. Ideas that are original and creative with a pilot and plot that's genuine. Yet rubbish like this gets the greenlight, millions go down the drain and people involved waste their talent while real talent gets the cold shoulder for absolute political garbage that's masked as "comedy"

    Didn't Inside Job do this exact plot, but like, a million times better and not bound to a time specific holiday?

    WHAT THE HELL???? I thought santas reasoning was fantastic, showing how candy got dragged into the very identity politics she hated so much. But I guess being self aware takes talent, something this show clearly lacks in. I kinda got a little upset at episode 7.
