Exactly when I wa 9-10 yrs young I watched Convoy (Rubberduck) and Smokey the Bandit, and it just blew me away . It was like something mystical had gripped me, the fantastically shaped box front Kenworths, Peterbilts and the Macks wow...., and even the Cabover types of the same brands??? Just super duper and certainly something to catch the eye especially of any European as the American trucks were so rare to see on our motorways and Autobahns . One could get lucky in the neighbourhoods of any U.S. Army bases throughout especially Germany as it was here that one could spot the Army's versions of Boxfronts or even better the grey coloured Cabovers which I think were actually Internationals? But hey, for us Europeans here were still a sight to see and really brilliant as a young boy to drive past. These rare occasions left their signature in my soul and enflamed a passion that still lives on inside of me even some 46 years later. Thanks for sharing any trucking memories and footage. Keep on truckin....
These old trucker movies are the best. I drove for several years until an accident brock my back and just never was able to do it again. Keep on trucking drivers. Your the heart beat of America
I rode the summers with my dad in the 60s, he passed away at 45 in 1967. He loved trucking, he started just before WW2. It was a different time and different people, they were known as the Knights of the Road because they would stop and help people in need, they drove long hours and got home only when a load brought them home. It was a time in which independent truckers out numbered corporate drivers. They took pride in their rigs and themselves.
I guess you don't know much about trucking. Before deregulation, in the 80's, the only independents were a few exempt freight produce haulers. Independents made up a very small percentage of the total rigs operating on the road. After deregulation, it was a different story. Anyone could haul any type of freight wherever they wanted. That's when the percentage of independents really increased.
25 yrs out here and I learned one thing about kids and trucking. No matter how much money I have made to assure a good life for them, it never fixes the the heartache they feel from daddy missing them growing up. Holidays, birthdays, school functions, losing a tooth...telling you over the phone is no replacement for actually being there. It's a torment I struggle with every day, the love I have for them and the love of trucking.
Roadhammer....., Thanks for sharing your mixed feelings towards the dream job of many a young man or woman. It sure is a torment to be torn between wanting to be a super Dad, to see the kiddies grow up lose their first teeth or their first day at Nursery School or later their first day at Elementary School....! All the more important is the Mum to step in and play her role in the most positive way possible by being the super Mum but also all the time explaining to the little ones why Daddy can't be at home for so long but is required off him to be on the road weeks or sometimes months in a row. It's this continuous and unconditional support one requires off the partner so to pull this difficult job off in the most successful way for all involved. One thing is for sure, over all these years the truckers haven't received the recognition that they deserve neither at home nor by the public. Without the truckers of this world there would be NOTHING in any shops, nor would the factories be able to produce half or finished products. Everything would just come to a standstill!!!!!!!!!!! So next time you go shopping and you pick up a fruit, or a bottle of coke, or try onna t-shirt or a pair of sneakers, stop and think of how that item got to where it is. Yeap and you might just catch yourself getting the jist of what I've just written. Cheers for sharing the moment to read my thoughts. Gordon from Germany (but English born and raised)
Back in the early 1980s when I was a kid I wanted to be a trucker and that’s what I am today and been doing it for 32 years. Now back then in the early 80s I seen only the highlights of Willa during a commercial break but not the whole movie until now. Thanks 🙏 for putting this on RUclips and I hope I’ll get it on dvd 📀.
I finally got to watch this movie 45 years after reading about it. 30 years after this movie, I started trucking in 2009. I drove for a dozen years OTR and then broke a collarbone due to the mechanic taking the steps off. I got a year off on workman's comp with family back in Texas. After getting a clean bill of health, I moved to the Philippines.I'm really glad I got to fulfill the dream of trucking, but in 2023 trucking and America isn't what it used to be. The America depicted in this movie is GONE.. very sad, it's becoming a dystopian hellscape. I really liked Deborah Raffin after seeing her in the true sailing story, The Dove about Robin Lee Graham. 1974 I think..
This movie reminds me of when I was a migrant worker, I would travel to different states. Sometimes I would see beautiful things, and sometimes situation that weren't so good, that why they say the highway can make you laugh, or it can make you cry.
Great story and cast. I truly admire strong ,independent women. I wonder why most men feel so threatened by them. Not all of us need a knight in shining armor to rescue us from the evils of the world.
Thanks for sharing~very inspiring. I’m in my 2nd week of driving & regret not learning sooner. And Wila is right about the incredible sense of freedom you get from the job!
Yeah, used to have. We USED to have freedom. The only thing that hasn't changed is being in the same room as that asshole bean counter. If you're lucky enough to work for a quality employer, where you are treated like a person, you best cherish that as if it is the breath in your body. Otherwise, enjoy bean counters who micromanage and manipulate their bread and butter. While their at it, skim the check and leave you the bones. 16 years, 16 long YEARS. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE what I do, can't imagine any other life, but MY GOD how it's changed. When I started, you still had the freedom to drive when awake and sleep when tired, now, with the e-log device, you are FORCED to operate within certain parameters and will find yourself forced, sooner than later, to drive VERY tired. My first year at swift was by FAR and away, the absolute WORST year, physically, AND financially, I've EVER had
why have i not seen this before,? started in 76 driving transit luton all over uk ,loved it ,y kids came with me when ever off school, went on to hgv1 had too tie seat down in seddon atki and block of wood to rest my feet on, moved on to doing steel , agency work amongst others, then to containers , i am now retired but loved the job, yes freedom you get from the job,
Beautiful, amazing and inspiring movie. Even today, unfortunately, there is prejudice against female truck drivers in many countries. I live in Brazil and i have my truck, and i have some female friedns who also have their trucks and are fighting every day to fulfill their big dream. Only a truck driver knows what i say.

I can't even remember when I didn't want to become a trailer trucker. My step-dad started teaching me on an old LF Mack with a five speed main box, a 3 speed aux and 2 speed rear ends back when I was just 13 years old. I drove trucks in the military including line and heavy haul for the 37th Transportation Gp, 4th Trans Bde
Same here, Randy. I was fascinated with trucks and wanted to drive them since I was about five. And similar to your story, when I was 15 my dad tried to teach me to drive on a 1974 cabover Mack. I say he "tried" to teach me because, even though it had only a simple 5 speed (no auxilliary, IIRC), I couldn't seem to get the hang of it. He died a few years later, and I didn't start to drive trucks until I was 30, so he never got to see that I finally got the hang of it. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I remember this film and it got shown once in the UK on Channel 4 and also remember that The Bellamy Brothers song which in a way got me into C&W tunes.
I appreciate the ground work that was laid by all the women who put up with all the stereotypes and the nay sayers and the bullies to fulfill their dreams of the road so other women had an example to follow. I never thought I'd be a trucker, let alone own my own rig, but I've always loved to go on long drives to clear my head and get away from asshole people. 16 years have come and gone and in-between I tried to settle down. It's a blessing my husband cheated on me so I could just hop right back into my rig instead of trying to make him a good wife. I'm married to my truck now and my kids are the road and the people are my family.
My uncle had a General like that wasn't a 79 because he sold it and bought a Pete in 78. I miss sitting in the pass. seat, now I have to drive the damn things.
Heckuva good trucking movie. I had never seen it before. Thanks for uploading it. Another trucking movie that is really good but you don't see very often is "Steel Cowboy" (1976) starring James Brolin and Rip Torn. They had a poor copy of it on YT here at one time and then it was gone but it might be back now. Anyway, I ended up buying the DVD of that one so that I would always have it. I wouldn't mind having a DVD of this movie here also.
Hi excellent movie 🎥 really enjoy it she was one tough gal more power to her and thanks to all truckers for what you do men and ladies and as always you all be safe 🇺🇸🇺🇸
*I learned to Drive truck on one very much the same as that GMC 5 Star General. The one my step-father had was a 1978. Torn between family and the Whiteline, I know exactly what that's all about.*
But couldn’t drive a truck and being considered a lady... Wow it was very cool back then, when the main issue is hung a purse at the front door of a cafe.
Leaving the door open/unlocked doesn’t mean that the place and the times are more safe or have less crimes. 90s were bad in terms of crime rates and serial killers sprees. But the 70s and the 80s were worse than the 90s for numbers of serial killers, especially in rural, small and isolated areas and communities. My grandparents and parents always closed and locked the door, and they grow up in different cities Dallas and NYC (Manhattan). When I was a kid I was immediately taught to always close and lock the door (day or night).
What a great flick! Relaxing. Been driving since 2000, and mostly local til recently now otr. There's some joy to be found yet. Govt hasn't taken it all.. most but not all. Just me and the Lord out there.
Underrated? She was everywhere. How about the movie where the egg falls to the floor and she gets kidnapped by Andrew Prine? Or Nightmare in Badham County?
Life simply got too sped up for humans to smell the flowers. Technology was advancing, but things were still at a good pace before the internet became a reality. Things will never be good again
The internet was a bonus to the human race for a while. Unfortunately most people live online now and there is no going back. Social media was the killer.
This was the Era I started. It was tougher to get in then not like today. Now it is tougher to get out. I wonder if the new breed could handle using pay phones and real maps instead of cel phones and gps
I started my horse hauling business in 1988 went till 2012.. Was tough er then than now. Sometimes I only had $40. to make a trip gambling on my hustling more work to get aload home. Lots of folks told me that I couldn't do it. I proved them wrong.
Yes, dang pay phones in rain / snow and Wait to get a back haul from Canadian border/WA area. Could freeze ones toto off in that weather!! Love PAPER atlas/ still a good idea with help from Google map for latest on height clearance ect.. I started in early 70s was real different then but I don't think I'd do tanker runs in & thru LA, CA like I did then No Way. Not enough life ins...😇
Well, not sure what part you mean, but the welfare lady was right, why should the state pay for her children while the deadbeat father doesn't pay a dime. Problem we have in the UK is some people here think the government is firstly responsible for their kids, and then maybe them.
This is a lovely movie with great performances by the cast especially Debbie Raffin. Splendid and appropriate score by John Barry and some great specially-composed songs. Anybody know why the Bellamy Brothers never got a credit - or it's composer L.E. Williams? Ok - the song wasn't specially composed for this movie (having been released in 1975) - but it is unusual for it not to receive a credit. This movie is gagging time and time again for a DVD / b-r release!!
My Little brother's a trucker and has this (had) dream a running this fleet with his big brothers , but we all went different ways . I enjoyed the show
I remember the old days driving a conventional semi truck and trailer in school double clutching the gears with the H pattern and doing the pre trip inspection before the trip going cross country with a log book before the digital log book now its longer hours behind the wheel.
It was the same attitude at the racetrack. A gal had to work harder and longer to prove she deservved to do the same job as as a guy. When I was starting to gallop racehorses , they would put you on the rattiest behaving horses to see a "free rodeo". But I made it despite the obstacles. Just like Willa!
Odd that this movie never made the list of movies that Deborah Raffin was in. I've always enjoyed trucker movies, but I've never seen this one. Deborah's mother was the female truck driver.
back when you didn't have to be an enthusiast to drive anything other than a Freightliner Cascadia and Volvo VNL I would absolutely love to drive a GMC General all over the country

This was a good movie and reminded me a bit of "North Country" well done.
@@rebeccaknox2567 Yeah, I don't know if I believe that BS! But you're entitled to your own version of the industry, historically speaking or otherwise. I'd need to see the hard evidence of the claims you espouse to believe that their was ANY so-called attitude adjustment. Believe what you want to believe.
Even had Hank Williams Jr in it nice 👍
And Merle!
My uncle had a General like that wasn't a 79 because he sold it and bought a Pete in 78. I miss sitting in the pass. seat, now I have to drive the damn things.
What A Wonderful Movie 😀😊😀 I Loved Every Min of It
Heckuva good trucking movie.
I have not seen this since 1986, thanks for the upload.
Digging this movie! My first time seeing it since I was a child!! Thanks!
haven't seen 5 minutes yet but I love it already! lol....the ''good ol' days'' of Truckin'
Have a ton of respect for Truckers....... This country couldn't function without them
I have never seen this and its a much to watch.i was born 65. Thanks for upload 👍
Thanxx 4 posting this nostalgic movie 💚💚💚
Thanks for watching and commenting 🙏
Back when a lady could hang her purse at the front door of a cafe...
But couldn’t drive a truck and being considered a lady... Wow it was very cool back then, when the main issue is hung a purse at the front door of a cafe.
@Proud Straight White Christian Conservative Man More like "used to leave doors unlocked around here" - no way today!
Would love this movie. Thank you for upload guys! Love the time for written comments, fellows! Be great!
I watched this in 1992, there's only one TV channel in remote area in Indonesia that time. Thanks for the upload
Credits: lady in the welfare office - Piccola Martin… that’s my grandmother
Lol thats amazing! I looked her up at imdb, she only appeared in this movie. Great name!
@@Mister_Listener Well she wasn’t an actress, she actually worked for ‘Mike n Debbie’ in the early 80s, they must’ve hooked her up w a small part
That is one good movie. I wish people today had that kinda drive
This was a good movie, enjoyed it.
R.I.P. Deborah “Willa”Raffin
I just had to look that up..Very sad..Always liked her.
She was considered for the part of Lois Lane in the 1978 Superman movie. I’m putting this down on my To Watch list.
Absolute clastic trucker movie ❤
Oh the ending turned out to be just fine!
Good movie 🎥
What a great flick! Relaxing.
Been driving since 2000, and mostly local til recently now otr. There's some joy to be found yet. Govt hasn't taken it all.. most but not all. Just me and the Lord out there.
Deborah Raffin was everywhere back then! Funny how many of her movies i have seen.
Really enjoyed this! Thanks for sharing!!
This brought back some painful memories.
5 star GMC General and the Chevy Bison were always good looking trucks 👍
Great movie she did an awesome job.
Deborah Raffin was _such_ an understated goddess...
hot
Underrated? She was everywhere. How about the movie where the egg falls to the floor and she gets kidnapped by Andrew Prine? Or Nightmare in Badham County?
Or when she played the skiier? Lol.
Life simply got too sped up for humans to smell the flowers. Technology was advancing, but things were still at a good pace before the internet became a reality. Things will never be good again
The internet was a bonus to the human race for a while. Unfortunately most people live online now and there is no going back. Social media was the killer.
Corey Feldman has had the same haircut his whole life lol
Little gem of a film!
Great movie!! I feel you you should always go for what you want to do!!! Recommend this movie!!
This was the Era I started. It was tougher to get in then not like today. Now it is tougher to get out. I wonder if the new breed could handle using pay phones and real maps instead of cel phones and gps
The short answer is hell no but you already knew that
I started my horse hauling business in 1988 went till 2012.. Was tough er then than now. Sometimes I only had $40. to make a trip gambling on my hustling more work to get aload home. Lots of folks told me that I couldn't do it. I proved them wrong.
And the computers in them I drove over the rode few months it was an experience.God bless the truckers
That vergil was one hell of a good man of corse she was dam good lady
Paw. This almost made me cry. Liked it never seen it. She got her own truck. Never saw a w900 like that.
Amazing how government always seems to make it harder for the honest hard working person
Absolutely ....
Well, not sure what part you mean, but the welfare lady was right, why should the state pay for her children while the deadbeat father doesn't pay a dime. Problem we have in the UK is some people here think the government is firstly responsible for their kids, and then maybe them.
@@harryo6126 the gov. Makes money from welfare, it's not free. I just paid back 100 grand and my child is 42!
YESSA
@@old8235 you paid back welfare? I'm lost. The only way in the UK you pay it back is if it is later found you were claiming illegally.
A beautiful patch of life, I am enchanted.
My
Little brother's a trucker and has this (had) dream a running this fleet with his big brothers , but we all went different ways . I enjoyed the show
I remember the old days driving a conventional semi truck and trailer in school double clutching the gears with the H pattern and doing the pre trip inspection before the trip going cross country with a log book before the digital log book now its longer hours behind the wheel.
I always had 2 old school pencils log books . One legal One hot
Wow, What a Good Movie ,Almost cried at the end .
"Just shove it right in there!" 😂😅😁😅😂
My favorite line!
Wow she did well, you needed a tin opener to get into that gap 😂❤
Well, I wasn't a truck driver in the civilian world, but I did drive truck(s) in the military (Transportation Company).
Greater Trucks 🚚 And One Person Rip Clu Gulager We're Miss Him Too
She puts allot of drivers to shame backing that rig between other parked rigs!
Very nice movie. Brings back memories.
The truck they went east in was really good looking truck I love the old movies just to see old Detroits
John Amos must be losin it, took him forever to change a light bulb.
Yeah, but he was one damn fine actors, and a hell of a human being!..👍
So great to see him in his younger days!
He was handsome
There’s a music video for Cody Jink’s “Lost Highway” featuring scenes from this movie. It’s pretty badass
Lol I love Cody Jinks and his music this is how I found this movie
Thanks, I was trying to find some of the songs on Shazam in the movie with no results..
I especially liked the part where she put the ventriloquist dummy on the chair and sang Christmas carols to the dummy 🙌🙌⚡🌟😂🐸👴
“It’s snowing down south”
Means your slip is showing
but nobody wears slips anymore, thank goodness🧡🌿🦋🍃🌷🌿🌼🍃💕🌿🍄🍃💧🌴☀️🌿🌻🍃🌺🌿🐝🍃💜
It was the same attitude at the racetrack. A gal had to work harder and longer to prove she deservved to do the same job as as a guy. When I was starting to gallop racehorses , they would put you on the rattiest behaving horses to see a "free rodeo". But I made it despite the obstacles. Just like Willa!
That's interesting, Nancy. Thanks for watching and for sharing your perspective.
💜
thanks for uploading this movie love it
Anyone notice when she emptied the coffee pot out on that guy at the counter but then when she put the pot back it had coffee in it? 🤔
i did
A ventriloquist dummy put more coffee in there but they edited it out. ☕🍵🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃😷☺
I did
I did but decided to let it go:-)))

And then you didn't!! lol
wait, that voice, that's .. JJ's father! oh my .. "Nice" (::)
I cannot understand for the life of me why these movies are not being preserved
Brilliant film 🙋♀️🙏🚛🇬🇧
Good. Movie! James from Good times is in it.
He's a great actor
He plays the tuff guy roles perfectly....
Odd that this movie never made the list of movies that Deborah Raffin was in. I've always enjoyed trucker movies, but I've never seen this one. Deborah's mother was the female truck driver.
Wow
John Amos in this film from Goodtimes?
Sure the hell is. I never knew he played in this movie.
Good Trucking Move 👍👍👍 never seen it at all till tonight seeing how it was at that time .Thank You for sharing 👍
back when you didn't have to be an enthusiast to drive anything other than a Freightliner Cascadia and Volvo VNL I would absolutely love to drive a GMC General all over the country
i have adamiration for all women truckers all the best to them they fight in a man"s world. love them all.
That looks like a Dootson Truck Driving School Truck in that tight parking spot....
Remember when Jimmy Deisels ruled the Highways ? I can't imagine trying to make in hillls with a 6-71 ..
We used to have a 359 pete started life with a 6-71 when it was wornout and done with they put a 8v92 in it it slung a rod a short while later and now its got a 3408
I really enjoying this amazing movie like this one
That was a pretty good flick
Great job young lady
