Cool graphics, although the problem with league client is not so much UI design but rather the bugs, glitches, server issues and such - which you kind of address but I don't know why design change would actually solve the lag and such. If anything, having every process from home screen, champ select, and loading screen all try to run on one thing like you're trying to achieve could actually create more complex problems in the coding. Also, having the client as a window also helps players multi task with stuff while in queue and champ select. Making friends list collapsible discourages interaction, and those who want to play with their friends has no incentive to ever close it - I'd rather just have it on the side available at all times. The new pregame screen hides the splash art that gives characters and their skins a certain charm. Obv this was a short project and what you can really perfect in the time you had as one person is obviously not going to be perfect and views are subjective.
Nice effort overall and entertaining video

i think making the game and the client one thing would make a lot of sense. league is the only game i know of that runs like this and it honestly makes no sense. the only reason why someone would even use the client during the game would be texting someone and that could probably be changed for the new system in a way that would make sense. also i am pretty sure that u can resize the client and the game by simply changing the resolution to a smaller window so i dont really get ur multi tasking point. the friend list is also collapsible right now so thats not even new. i do agree with what ur saying about the bugs and the server issues tho, that should really be the first thing to fix before going for any UI changes

@@MFHighness Black Desert Online, Realm of the Mad God, and other MMOs very commonly do this Client>In-Game Client set up. Most of them do it for reasons other then why Riot likely does it. Riot likely does it because it was either easier to code or more efficient back when they first made it and it would be to big of a hassle to change it now. But you can see it somewhat commonly with games that have embedded links into them, think the YT videos and blog posts you see on the home page. I don't know why exactly this is the case but there is likely a reason for it otherwise companies wouldn't do it.

    Some criticism:
I'd say this is an example of creating UI without UX in mind, but the UI itself wasn't so hot either. In the process of cutting and compressing everything, you've created a ton of unused space which is a huge no no in this field. Even with the chat box and friends list overlay open, half (if not more) of the client is completely empty, just a background. The client background is not UI, even if its dynamic, so you shouldn't treat it as such. I strongly recommend exclusively designing UI without a background, as the only thing that should be influencing your UI is a grid.
I can't say any of these scenes are anywhere near as good as the original scenes, especially the champ select, loading, and post game scenes. However the quality of your effort and presentation is high, which I appreciate, so keep it up.

    • @IkeDesign
      @IkeDesign Год назад +6

Pretty much what I was going to say, well formulated - with the added downside that the new loading screen before hopping in game kills the full size splash arts which Riot relies on heavily for their monetization.
It's a very thorough and well presented project, but doomed to remain hypothetical. Cool video though! I left a like for the big efforts into presentation and the ambitious scope.

    • @Yese7
      @Yese7 Год назад +2

You're tripping if you think the new scenes aren't better the the current scenes we have, everything about this redesign is an improvement over the current client that we have, the pre game, the post game and the champ select screens especially are a straight up modernisation of the current version.
If you can't see something that obvious of an improvement and are still poking holes in a passion project to this degree, then I can only surmise that you're a stickler for all things design and don't actually care about an updated client, cos this video encapsulates exactly what the community has wanted for a number of years now and it hits the nail on the head perfectly.

  • @SiMeGamer
    @SiMeGamer Год назад +8

As neat as it might look (it's actually fairly close to the Legends of Runeterra main menu) this doesn't account for A LOT of how the client works.
The reason the client is the way that it is, is mostly for technical reasons. Making it work smoothly is tough and the transitions from client to game are separate because that's how it works. The only reason we even have a loading screen after draft is because the game is literally building on each client (so it only uses the minimum amount of asset resources on each machine) and moving stuff around into RAM. There is a ton of performance reasons for why the game works as it does.
Granted, I'm sure some of the things you showed could in theory exist, but it would require a humongous effort on the part of several teams.
And to fix the client, they would first need to refactor the entire backend which could take years of work even with a team of experts.
I do fine your design appealing but it isn't PC LoL. It's more Wild Rift. Also, in regards to the end screen, there is a huge design philosophy behind changing it that needs to be considered. Emphasis on winning/losing should lesser than how you actually played. There is so much you could in theory do with it in terms of looks and information but the psychology is the most important thing to account for imo. It's something game designers would call an impossible problem because when you fix one thing, you inherently worsen something else. Minimalism could hurt clarity. The font size of "Victory" could emphasize the wrong approach to the game. An MVP makes one player feel great and can make others feel worse. Showing damage is useless if you are a healing support, making you feel less valued by the screen itself. There is a ton of conflicts like that where you just have to commit to what you value more rather than trying to solve both problems and these types of decisions take a long time just to agree upon way before starting to design and implement anything.
The philosophy behind the League client is a lot more sophisticated than it appears. While some small aspects can probably be improved quickly (like UX/UI some of which you've shown), a lot requires a lot more care.
I loved the video btw. As someone who is obsessed with UX, this was wonderful. I don't want to undersell how much I enjoyed this. But I also want to make sure that it is understood that Riot aren't stupid and the reason things are the way they are is for many, many good reasons. Hope you make of of this stuff. Super entertaining video!

I love that i can just drag it to the side and be on Discord or YT or somehting like that. I also think the game loading screen doesn't show the splasharts of the Skins a lot. Whenever i buy a skin I love to have a sick splashart and you only see that in the loading screen so it kinda defeats the purpose. Also having a team chat in the loading screen is a must. I hate it when I have a conversation in champ select and it just ends because of the 5 minute loading screen.

I have mixed feelings ngl, on one hand your work is "good", on the other, it's fundamentally flawed, the moment you said it was needed for it to be fullscreen like any "relevant" game, idk but i have a pretty powerful pc and the funnist stuff is whenever a videogame it's only fullscreen and, you tab out, then the game discombobulates randomly, no matter if you have 16+gb ram with a decent video card lmfao. I personally like windowed clients, they allow for user comfort, wich should be the focus of a client. Gj tho, in my personal opinion what i would do would be making it a fullscreen window like photoshop or gogle chrome, that way your pc won't fuck up the program while you do something else. And tab between apps.

he only made the design without coding etc. Redoing the client would take 2 years probably because the previous company who created league used outdated methods and its very difficult and time consuming to fix. they need to create league of legends 2 or something and write everything from scratch - which they will never do - so they fix only tiny things which takes them also ages and lots of ressources.

    1. In the pregame loading i think there should be a icon next to the banner as opposed to the crest you have rn, i think it looks a but weird and doesnt pop out much.
    2. The after screen should have the dmg charts right next to it or have a siggestive arrow to click that will take you there, since thats the first peice of info somone will always want 99% of the time.

Personally, while I do enjoy your ideas in theory, in practice I think they are removing some truly iconic images from the game. Defeat and victory screens, while arguably boring are special for a reason.
Other people mentioned it too, but windowed client is extremely convenient, especially for high elo players who can wait up to 10/15 minutes for a match.
Also it’s mostly personal taste, but I am not a big fan of that loading screen - I feel like we don’t need an emphasis on the map (unlike Valorant) and you are taking away some of best parts of league (splash arts that are mainly visible on loading screen) And how would you check masteries and eternals and BORDERS on that loading screen?
Apart from that, it was a fascinating video! Keep it up! 😊

I personally don't vibe with it for a few reasons.
-The design feels kind claustrophobic to me in champ select yet too empty in the home screen. (Like why does the splash art of Ahri take up 80% of the screen, but queue take up 5%?)
    - I don't like how the client is constant full screen. (I like being able to have the home client just chilling in the background while in queue. When queue pops and I go to champ select I can still mess around on my other screens to at look builds, match ups, win rates etc)
    - I have a long standing hatred for UI animations. (UI animations always makes an user interactions feel like you have 500 ping between clicking and being able to interact with the next thing)
Though that's the thing about UI design, it's basically art. Some people will love it, some people will hate it. You put a lot of good work and planning into that which I like.

  • @QuienSoy-d1q
    @QuienSoy-d1q 11 месяцев назад +1

Yeah, it looks pretty good... however, is there even a problem with the actual client?
As a concept it is a great idea... but, your solution for a better client was to redesign it from the bottom, when you didn't even take the time to identify the problem correctly.
I will repeat it for those who don't understand, it is a great design concept for a 2 week project.
BUT saying that's the solution is out of question when you didn't defined the problem. Sharing a concept is cool and you never know when it will open you opportunities... the approach of "I got the solution for ____(for what?, really)" is just so unnecesary.
My concern comes for the people watching and thinking that it should be done as a solution, or young desginers that think the same way when approaching a project. NO, never give solutions for things you haven't investigated well enough. The problem might not even be the one you are thinking it is.
The video makes a great point when asking "why the need of two clients loading at the same time?", but then, he never explained why is that or why haven't they changed it, as a part of a diagnosis in any project. Repeating one last time, my concern comes from a planification standpoint, do not think you have solutions when you haven't correctly identified the problem.

You simple changed the navigation bar from horizontal on top to vertical on the left, the "content grouping" already exists, in the exact same manner and removed a bunch of features. on the home screen alone, these things are missing:
    -crafting
    -voice chat
    -bugreport
    -clash
    -your shop
-social tab management (adding friends, creating folders, options)
-patch info (yes this is useful)
    -esports advertisements/info
    -patchnotes
    -merch
-tft (no you can't just remove it, in fact a proper redesign should incorporate all of riot's games in 1 client)
also how does the friendslist being collapsible make navigation easier? you have nothing behind it. furthermore the current friendslist is equally collapsible.
getting into a match also isn't faster unless all you do is play the same queue solo.
but if you want to do something else, like play aram then in your design you have to click pvp, then make a selection. and all this while not using 90% of the screen. there's no reason for it to be that small, that'll create miss clicks and frustration in general. being able to drag ppl from the friendslist into the current lobby is also something useful that's gone.
champ select screen while not bad, i can't call it an upgrade at all. at least here you didn't remove functionality i don't think
loading screen: there are technical reasons for it to exist, that wasn't a visual design choice. separating the client and the game helps low end systems a lot in fact. the client auto closing/reopening is a SETTING you can enable/disable that's meant to help low end system, taking this option away is not an option.
post game screen: again you just removed a bunch of things and just hand waved "people get performance metric based titles". implementation is the first problem in a complex game like LoL. furthermore having the post game screen in the content tab of the client isn't practical, you are limiting the usable space on the screen for no real upside.
furthermore the obsession with putting all navigation on the left is bad, this isn't mobile, you navigate with a bar on top. that is practical and standard, hence intuitive.
overall, this redesign removes functionality to implement a visual style that you personally prefer, not one that is better.

  • @Ryurin9

  • @huntersuper98
    @huntersuper98 Год назад +1

While I think this redesign is definitely more modern it also loses any and all style that the current client and look has which is already a stylistic downgrade from what they had previously. It would be significantly more functional yes but people can get over the small inconveniences if it feels satisfying to interact with the medium. Which is why fundamentally if the client worked better then it does without changing anything stylistically that would be perfect. Of course adjustments here and there are to be expected but I'd hate to see a full group up "modernization" of the League client when personally I think all passion and style has been lost with all the games that do the whole "modernization" aspect of it. A middle ground would be perfect but considering that this video was done by a single student it looks great and if it really did only take you 15 days or so to make it that's all that more impressive. It's also impressive that no truly new assets were really made, mostly adjustments to what already existed which is no easy feat. Despite that though I can't say I would want something like this to be the League client. That's my own opinion though.

not original imo, every game nowadays goes for the left-side, it's giving mobile game. the loading screen is a botchery, looks exactly like valorant. the problem is people in league also pay for splash arts when they buy skins so making their specific splash art cuts into 'namecards' ruins the whole purpose of buying skins. not to mention people pay for something called "borders" for their skins, this goes against what people purchased. minimalism will be the death of us

  • @gtagusta
    @gtagusta Год назад +1

although your design is very good looking it has a major flaw, that being that it straight up, just is not convenient at all, its worse in most aspects when compared to the current one
    client :
i like a lot of the design but i got to disagree on a few places, you said the original client is all over the place, when its quite organized, specially on layout, its easier on the eye since things arent divided between each side of the screen, every single part of your layout is on the left, while the profile and socials is on the right, so when you try to use both at the same time you are going to need to dart from one side of the screen to the other.
while on league's original client as the layout takes only the top part, the left part being focused on the game aspect of the layout, and the right part being reserved to the client itself, you only ever need to go to the left side when you are going to queue up, even the home and tft page since they are on the top are faster to access than a sidebar.
the TFT part of the client is also very important since it not only makes the client more accessible to TFT players it also helps a lot to maintain league's player base since a lot of people only play league for the TFT, so making it harder to access anything TFT related would just be a bad decision
Where is league voice? its an important feature of LoL, and although a bunch of people dont use it, you still may prefer it over discord if you dont want to give your discord information to strangers, or if someone in your team doesnt have a very great pc and cant handle both at the same time
Another important thing is where is the profile page? is it in the profile picture? If so, is it separated from the profile customization and if thats the case in what way? since they serve completely different purposes it would be a little bit unintuitive to just put it there without any way for the player to know without clicking. you cant also make them the same page since the profile page is massive and it uses a lot of that space not only to convey important information, like match history, your playstyle, your rank progression and rewards, honor levels, exact amounts of exp, trophies, banners, masteries, etc, from your design it just feels like we lost all that or that it got compressed so it could fit in a page with the profile customization.
where are the skin offers? are the skins on the background the offers? if so where is the homepage cause if its included on that area, then its just a straight up a worse homepage, since you dont really get the names of each section of the homepage it would be harder to ascertain what dot is which
and although combining everything into the collection page may look good from a desing perspective, cause the collection page already has so much shit, adding the loot page onto it could feel even more cluttered.
another problem with all that is the performance, since one of the reasons for the current client being so laggy is how reactive it is, and with the new client you made being even more reactive with a bunch of new effects and animations, it would get even more laggy.
you also gutted the gamemode select screen cause instead of using all the space to improve it, you tried to make it so small that it actually gets cluttered, and would most likely be harder for a new player to ascertain what is what at glance, like the multiple gamemodes, if they can or not play those, the reason for that, those gamemodes descriptions, etc.
and again WHERE IS THE LOBBY? Why remove cool and interesting features just like that, and yes i do see that you simplified it but making it smaller. But again there is a bunch of important things missing, like the button to make the party invite only, the gamemode selected, what points you get from playing that gamemode, the list of suggested invites, and people already invited, the button TO LITERALLY STOP THE QUEUE, you also cant see other peoples profile icons, tokens, borders, banners, names, challenge ranks, which kinda of removes the point of having them in the first place, even tho they are an actual good and interesting feature that helps make your account feel unique
and again there are actual things that i like about your design cause they are better than the current client ones, like the social list, although it could smaller and more concise to make better use of the space, the fact that you actually can collapse is just massive, since the size of the social list doesnt really matter if you can just collapse it and use the space either way. the design is also very good looking specially the play button, same can be said of the content area, and using the extra space for splash arts is just a genius idea, but the thing is none of these things solves the problems talked about above, and that is what makes this design worse from my point of view, as the design is not a piece of art to be looked upon but rather a game element, its way more important for it to be easy and intuitive to understand, be it for people that already play the game or newcomers.
another problem is that a massive change like that in design would take a lot of time for players to get accustomed to, especially since its such a radical change
    two more tabs to go
    champ select:
where is the button to edit your runes and select automatic runes depending on champs, there is no reason to remove quality of life improvements, other than to make the game blatantly worse, and no matter where you put those its a straight up downgrade, since if they are inside the rune select it would just be an inconvenience, since instead of a single click to access those functions now you need two, and that adds up pretty fast if you need to make multiple changes, being specially detrimental if those changes are last minute changes
league voice again nowhere to be seen, the same can be said for the missions tab that you cant even check anymore, and although the entire social tab is nice, the only thing that adds up is being able to see who is online and such, since you can already access your friend's chats from the current client, you cant even double check what gamemode you are playing either.
although removing the color and adding the shatter on top of the icon sound like a good idea, since it does look kinda good, its just not a good idea, it makes it harder to recognize a few champs in their splash arts with a glance, specially if you dont fully know the roster
on topic of new players, removing the "DECLARE YOUR CHAMPION!" text isnt a very good idea, since its there for a reason, and it does help guide players.
and although like you said, you try to stay true to the hextech elements, that isnt really the case since the current client does a way better job of actually showing that thematic. Even then I do have to agree with you when it comes to skin select, your design does look better and more sleek, well that is, until you see the sidebars, the problem with them is that, 1 they dont show the original champions icons and that is very important for a new player so that he can differentiate the champions easier, and know their actual looks, instead of getting confused with skins that can variate a lot in looks but retain the same name, this even interacts with the store better, since the new player is going to look for the name of the champ and the image that he saw, which can be either harder to find since he is looking for a skin not the actual champion, or a let down, since skins can look way better than the base design at times, and 2, the name, position and spells are quite far apart which again although not as much, kinda makes you dart where your looking from side to side, when trying to see both at the same time.
    pre-game:
although the new features are nice like team chat, customization and socials, you still have things like the tips and trivia being at the top of the screen when your eyes are going to be resting at the center/bottom area of the page since that is where there are the most elements to interact with, so having to move your eyes all the way up there to check on the trivia and loading timer is bad
and again for whatever reason you decided to gut another huge amount of features, way less space for the splash art, mastery, eternals, banners, icons, borders, tokens, the ranks borders, titles, hornor, not only all that but it also retains that same problem of the champ select, that being separating both the runes and the summoner spells.
and guess jackass you still are going to need to wait for the client to open and load the game, or at least an equivalent to that, since the reason it takes time in the first place is that its loading the rift and its assets, and just having those loaded can again affect the performance, and another reason for having both as one not charging loading times is that a big part of that is synching everyone's internet up, so it depends on the players wi-fi not on riot.
    post-game:
again the post game does look good but it still is missing a lot of important information and aspects, like honoring teammates, other important game metrics that arent dmg dealt, like dmg taken, cc scores, gold leads, the amount of exp isnt shown, the LP gain although shown its in a very minor way which doesnt help with feeling victorius since its looks like such an after thought, you also dont see challenges nor eternals progression, and you also dont get your rating, which again, are things that help you feel victorius and like you played well, and if thats the whole point of remaking the post game screen why not include those too? Its one of my favourite pages by far that you made, and yet it lacks so much important things.
i do gotta say that queuing up again is nicer with that design, although its not like the current one makes it a lot harder

Good try, but honestly I don't like this design. It looks much more complicated and many decisions are not UX friendly.
    1. there is so much space in the center of the screen with no relevant information or buttons that I will use on a daily basis. As an example: Why do you think the play button needs to be on the left side of the navigation? This button could be much better placed on the left big screen.
    2. the "choose your mode" info box after clicking the play button is absolutely terrible imo. They don't look like clickable objects, the border is too small and the buttons don't prioritize the most common and important and advertised game mode - ranked. The "Last played" placeholder above the duo mode indicates that you can't even find this button in the list, much more it looks like this is a placeholder for the last played mode. I know the intention, but it raises questions.
    3. the flow after you hit the queue is very good! It doesn't feel clunky at all and that's a very big plus point. But also the feedback when you go into the queue is non-existent. It's too small, no real visual feedback that you've actually hit the queue. I also don't like that the "Accept Button" is on the left and the middle part is still untouched. I imagine this would cause many to not get to the game because you have to go all the way to the left to click the little button that doesn't have as much impact on the screen. There's a reason why it's currently in the center of the screen and very large because people often forget to click it.
    4. the loading screen is missing most of the skin splash art. This is not good because people buy skins to have something for themselves, but also to show to others. Also, the loading screen is hard to expand if Riot wants to add new personalized stuff. I really like the team chat!
    5. the victory screen is really decent and I like the idea that the winning team should feel the victory after the game. But the buttons like the scoreboard and stats are so hidden. Why is that? When I first saw the video, I thought you forgot about them, only to realize they were at the bottom of the screen.
I mean, the Design looks clean and good and probably thats the main goal for this design: To look good.
But in perspective of UX it is, sorry when I say it so harsh, terrible and very bad.

I like it but I also think that things like "news" and "patch notes" might be good to have grouped together in an "updates" tab or something similar! Great vid man

I really like the fresh new look and the idea of sorting the content shown in the client in groups that make sense, the post game screen is a cool concept as well but I'd miss all the detailed statistics compared in a chart. My biggest issue was with the loading screen, because I'd rather want to see the full splash art of the champions and skins instead of a zoomed in version. Imo your design focuses a bit too much on sums and runes, they can be smaller maybe. The idea of having the teams sliding in from the left and right side of the screen is great because that opens up a better way to look at the splash arts if the squares had a different format

I really like the re-design idea, but there seem to be some huge flaws:
With your concept (at least as per shown in the video), the role selection kinda disappeared and, assuming it would be an "update" on the gamemode window, I do not honestly like the hidden info it would cause (removing gamemode selection to show role selection).
While the accept button is really cool and with a nice animation that doesn't break the client's flow, a really big and centered button like it is right now would be way more user friendly. Especially considering that people alt-tab quite a lot during matchmaking (in a medium elo environment it takes at least 30 seconds to find a game; in high elo even more than 10 minutes).
Really like the friends chat during champ select, which kinda balances the lobby chat visually. I'm not really sure about a so small "first pick" font-size (and same goes for its position) but I honestly cannot stand the summoner spells being so small. A thing I would've thought of adding, more player than design-wise, would be my ally's keystone rune and maybe the secondary if it ain't too much visually.
Pre-game screen is probably the worst screen there is in the redesign. In itself, as always, it keeps a good flow, but both as a player who spent money and a developer who's trying to get money and make people grind, I would make champion banners way bigger (kinda like they are right now) to make people flex skins and rank borders, since in your redesign they are so visually ignorable. Still like having both chats on by the way. It's not necessary, but it's a nice thing to have for sure. Last but not least for this screen I still feel like summoner spells are too small. They are really important from a player PoV, so I would make them bigger and more noticeable. The same goes for runes.
I really like the end-game recap screen, but your "victory concept" lacks a little. All in all it's a nice idea, but the most important thing that makes a game feel like a win or a lose, is the LP loss/gain (obviously this goes only for rankeds). To find it in your concept I had to really look for it, which ain't a good sign.
All in all, congrats for the project, the successful video, and wish you the best of luck 💪

Riot should be paying this man for this idea!
However if I know anything about companies they'll just find a way to steal it and claim it was their idea 😭
Amazing redesign. The only thing I like better is Wild Rifts end game screen with the MVP because it shows all the champions on your team, but your idea of giving everyone labels is amazing. It would highlight what everyone did rather than not giving them any credit at all.
Even if their KDA is ass do it matter if they're the only one that took objectives and caused a lot of pressure? Shit like that would be nice to highlight 😁

I'm gonna be honest, while this is a good showcase of your skills, it also fails to address some core problems of the game's client.
You did spot on with the single client for both out-of-game and in-game stuff. Quick game from the home screen is also brilliant. But that aside, you focused on the coolness factor more than the actual utility the current client brings, bugs and lag aside.
The end screen was abysmally negligent of the actual intent to me. I want to see stats, I want to see information, not pretty animations and skin previews.
The pre-game loading screen hid the skins' splash art, literally one of the main selling points of the skins, let alone the borders from bundles. Riot wouldn't ever allow that so it's unfathomable that you would even consider alternating the design. Plus, the current design could only use some selective modernization, a full revamp is almost unnecessary.
And the biggest offense is the in-game vs out-of-game utility you missed on. Nothing like entering your profile settings in-game with the single client you have, and adjusting settings and preferences, in either the same game, or in a separate window, like adjusting rune pages, item sets, purchasing skins, champions, buying RP, looking up profiles like you would with u.gg, having an official source of game statistics like win rates and such.

You'd think in 2023 Riot would've grown out of the client being a web app (It's standard HTML, CSS, JS) but here we are lol. Perfect opportunity to rework both lobby and in-game into one client.
