I signed up for "selective service" just because, yeah, penalties for not doing so weren't things I could afford. My parents had no money for college, so I needed federal loans, etc. My mom used to tell me if it ever actually went into effect I should declare myself a "conscientious objector", though I have no idea if that would actually do anything if the draft were implemented. In any case, I had just turned 18 in May of 2001 which of course was followed just a few months later with 9/11, and immediately I figured "welp, US is going to war, draft is coming"... but obviously it didn't and I've long aged out now, but there was a time I thought I had really drawn that unlucky deck.
It was different in the Vietnam era. If you were young, healthy, poor with no connections, registered with the local draft board, and finished high school or dropped out, it was almost certain you would be involuntarily inducted into military service!
I must be honest about one thing: It seems that most draftees never saw duty in Vietnam. It depended on your MOS.

Depends. Those who dodged the Vietnam draft were not seen that way and a number of them became President, Clinton, Trump, Biden. More Universities hired draft dodgers over vets.

Every wealthy person or government official that has dodged the draft: "I'm Wealthy and or work in the government therefore I am exempt from risking my life unlike the rest of these peasants.
I'm a vet that severed while a certain draft dodger was in office. This is exactly the thought that went through my mind while he made his speech about how brave we were for risking our lives for this country
Thats why theyre shipping in illegals because they cant be drafted either.
I enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 17 and spent 4 years active duty. I held blue collar jobs after that. When I was 51 my mother passed away and I decided I wanted a college degree. I was denied loans cause I never signed up for the Selected Service Program. What a fight that was to get a waiver. Got my AA degree now and working on my BA.
Problem is there is no way to prove or disprove someone registered Selective Service can always claim someone registered when they didn't and likewise claim they did not register when they did. Some claim President Obama did not register, currently he is the only President to have been subject to registration who was not subject to the actual draft. Unfortunately the only validation is with Selective Service, and who knows how honest they are.
Instead of joining the navy at 17 you should have gone to university instead

When I turned 18, I didn’t fully know about the selective service. I thought it was optional until about 6 months later I got a letter in the mail telling me was I required to sign up for it. Kind of ridiculous, how going to war at 18 could be mandatory but doing anything else is still illegal or prohibited because they think we’re still too young.

For one, the Preamble of the Constitution says that it’s made to “provide for the common defense”, but besides that, Article I, Section 8 states much about what Congress can do to raise an army:
Section 12: Raise and support armies
Section 13: Provide and maintain a Navy
Section 15: Call forth militia to suppress rebellions and repel invasions
Section 16: Organize, lead and discipline all federal militia, state militia will be left up to the states
So the Constitution clearly says that Congress has the power to raise an army, no restrictions on how. This has been upheld in several court cases with one conclusion stating “the power … to classify and conscript manpower for military service is beyond question.”

You have a higher possibility to stay alive if you decide to go to jail instead of war
Dodging the draft was almost a national pastime for many. Most just went along with it or found ways to get in a uniform and type of duty they wanted. Guard, reserves and other ways. Go 2 counties over and join the Air force instead of getting drafted into the Army for Vietnam. Might have had to enlist for longer but you were punching your own ticket. For the most part enough served where and when needed.
