Bookshelves

- My parents have a lot of books, and need a place to put them. They have a mostly clear 24 foot wall in their finished basement. We thought we would build a book shelf along that entire wall. I designed this shelf a little bit differently than is typically done. Normally you build a box or a frame and build shelves into that structure. If you want more shelves, you build more boxes. In this traditional design, you end up with a double layer of material between each set of shelves. In my design, I built the vertical piece as one layer and attached each section together in the center of the shelves. This reduced the amount of material we needed to buy to 9 sheets of pre-finished birch plywood and also gained 3 to 4 feet of shelf space.

Fits well into my space, I painted the back green. It's very easy to customize just the back if that's something you want to do. I would suggest sanding it first before painting, I got a little impatient. The shelves ruclips.net/user/postUgkxM8H4CjCb79vzeyvgaFMdzmLm88oVFPMkare pretty small so keep that in mind if you're going to have it horizontal that some books won't fit. I like the snug look that it has. Good small shelf if you don't have much space, but not too small. Simple to put together, though you'll need your own tools, a screwdriver and a mallet/hammer, it's easiest to do with another person.
So nice your parents are a part of this video. You're a big inspiration Frank. Thank you.
Maurice why did you stop making your video? They were as good as good can be.
Jealousy is a terrible trait, but that workshop, bookshelves and that number of books has me going to confession. Regards.
seriously. is that a back to back table saw?
@@joshuap9580 it is a double outfeed table
Any man who loves and respects his mom deserves a thumbs up and a new subscriber. Great project too.
Love the slight stagger of the shelves. Awesome touch that stops the shelves from being boring
I have always believed that time in the shop with family is time well spent. Getting your mum in the shop, bonus, Good job mum and great design and execution.
Beautiful! And a nice bamboo bowl cameo.
+Make Something ha ha, thanks!
Thought the same thing! Great job explaining it as well.
Clickspring AND Frank on the same day? Today's my day.
+Noble909 Either one is cause for a smile --- both is absolute awesomeness
+Noble909 Thanks for the mention of Clickspring as I hadn't seen it before. Amazing stuff.
That's wonderful Frank. Thanks for helping your mom and pop. Thanks a lot.
No-one commented on your video editing mastery. Along side the incredible work on the library you created the time spent editing this video to keep it interesting and watchable is so well done that no-one noticed.
i personally loved the stop motion / time lapse

It's true. I keep thinking that Frank has worked (does work) as a professional videographer aside from these videos. I love the videos where he "sets up" an old projector screen when he wants to show two different views simultaneously.
It is a joy to help our parents with our woodworking gift. I'm sure Frank that your joy was greater then theirs. Thanks for sharing. Marc
Not only a great bookcase but a fantastic workshop, which is immaculate. A pleasure to watch.
I can picture your mom walking in while you were bringing the shelves downstairs like, "maybe this project would go a lot faster if you weren't playing with your camera every minute and a half like some kinda goddamn Wallace & Gromit..."
If he's smart he simply left a camera on in each location then took stills out of the feed after he was done.
I don't know why but I read this in a Henry zabrowski voice
God Bless your parents ,They created a great person who creates great things.
I learn so much from you and your videos are educational and entertaining at the same time.
When you have a big home library like your parents do, it's great to be able to put your hand on one volume quickly. My books are like old friends which I enjoy for reference, browsing and re-reading..
Just great family time together. The world needs more of this. You are an inspiration.
Thats a nice thing to do for your Mum & Dad Frank, they must be very proud of you.
This video is nearly 4 years old and the editing is still as fresh and amazing as ever! Love it and love your mom in it too!
Your organization skills are just as impressive as your wood skills. It make your job easier!
Hey Frank. Great job on the mega book shelf....Clap Clap Clap and more so the extra lift from the ground in case it floods. Very few would keep that in mind! Mom and Dad must be so proud sitting back and just admiring it.
I actually yelled stop when you were backing up the truck. Great build!!! My youngest daughter and I built her bookcase together too. Always a pleasure Frank. Thanks for sharing.
+Bosn Ski I filmed leaving, and ran the video backwards.
Ah-Ha! POTS...
I love how the clean design allows the books to be the focus. My favorite part of the video was at the end when your parents filled the shelves. Great projects and video!
Best thing in life is to make your old folks happy. Good job
rhays Thats a lot of plywood...oh yea and the books..lol nicely done. .and that's awsome your mother got in there and went ta town on the drill press!! shes a hustler!!
+Joe basementwoodworking Thanks, she did a great job.
+frank howarth she really did! does she do crafting or woodworking? like in the past?
+frank howarth She saved you 2 days
Brilliant as usual, Frank!
Mom's deserve the best and you certainly delivered on this one. I loved reading the book titles too. I can see why she bugged you to get this project done.
Keep teaching and entertaining us, Frank. You're an important member of our woodworking community and every video episode you produce is a gift to us all.
"why she bugged you" was that an intentional pun? :D
Nice job Frank, you're a good son. It was nice to see your mom and dad.
Very nice shelving unit from a fine woodworker and a wonderful son. I am sure your parents were delighted.
Great job! I liked your little laugh when you talked about making your mother drill the shelving holes. Tee-hee.
Aww, this is one of those projects...
How rewarding it is, at the end, when you assemble it, to see all the work you've done comes to a neat library that changes the room. And gets used! How rewarding that feeling is...
Dude! Your mom is so cool!!! Enjoyed it. I dig the approach to the cases, the I box method. I had not seen that before... Thanks again Frank!
The straightforward time lapse presentation and demonstration of your work is archival and beautiful to watch. Thank you.
This was beautiful to watch. I love everything about this: Woodworking, problem solving, kindness, family and books.
The smooth flowing, relaxed, conversational style makes for a very easy listening. Well done.
Another classic Frank Howarth build video. Awesome!
I love the design of it. The seemingly random heights of the compartments make it look so much better than a perfectly square and even set of shelves.
Good job Frank, it looks amazing. You made your parents proud of ya...
Practical solutions with an aesthetic appeal all the way around! Even with a helper and being in a new locale, the video production was great!
You're a good son.
Must have good parents.
And, the book shelves look great.
With all due respect to you sir, I admire your parent's "Library" and was the star of this video for me.
Your Book Case was a well thought out and functional design.
....But them books !
As a reference book hoarder myself, I get the need to save them all for the ones that come after us to have and read as well, NO software upgrades needed !!
Nice job. Your parents are lucky to have a thoughtful son.
Mom in the shop with you nice. I really like your "out of the box" thinking there Frank (pun intended). ;)
Thank you Frank H. I used your method to do built in bookcases/entertainment center for my living room.... and it looks absolutely awesome in here now.
I'm also going to watch your kitchen videos again before I built cabinets for my kitchen. I build some cabinets for the garage, and then some nicer ones for the laundry room so far. I'm an amateur, so I needed the practice.
I love your channel and have learned so much from you and others. Keep doing what you do. I really appreciate it.
Awesome project. Getting help on the drilling was a good idea. That's so much work!
Nothing more exciting than opening up your You-Tube subscriptions to see that Frank has posted another video.
Well done as always and thanks for posting.
Ingenious design as always. Your mom was a trooper for drilling all those holes.
I love your mom.
It´s a pleasure watch your videos. Congratulations from Spain.
It was nice to see mom willing and able to help out with her shelves. Nice job.
I love the economy of the single upright instead of the double ones with the box after box set up! Well done Frank!
Big job, but with Mom's help it turned out well. Very impressive.
I'd like to call that little chuckle "the howarth laugh". Thanks a lot for hours well spent from germany!
Found this video independently but, I remember seeing a video of this woodshop and how it was built! Well done!
Each of your videos is a work of art, thank you, Frank. I love you
Frank you're my zen fix man. I'm always so relaxed after watching your videos.
Good job Frank. Mom and Dad should be very happy.
Capitalize, all bold...LOT OF BOOKS!!! haha, great video as usual and the shelves look nice.
WOW!You're parents are lucky to have you!
Awesome that you got your mother involved!!
That collections of books will rival most city public libraries. Good job on the construction. That was smart of you to enlist the aid of your mother to drill all the shelf pin holes. It now gives her an appreciation of how much work went into building the wall of book shelves.
+bwillan good point.
Thank you for sharing another persons passion for real books, long may both they live 👍👍👍👍👍
Wow! Super MOM. Great project, Frank. I have about 10 sheets of prefinished maple ply waiting on me to produce cabinets. I designed the cabinets to surround our Theater Room screen using Sketchup. Then I imported the Sketchup file into Aspire and produced the CNC vectors and toolpaths. I just need two more hands to load these sheets onto the CNC. I have been waiting just over a year so far. Wish I had mom like you :)
That is huge! Great job done there. I like your approach not to build boxes with shelves. Thanx for sharing!
Wow you weren't kidding when you said they had a lot of books.... AWESOME!!!! Great project, super clean bockcase unit that looks great... and as always your videos are super clear and very well put together.
Your parents must be proud of your accomplishments. I know I'm impressed. Not just with this video, either.
Your videos making skills make for easy viewing. Your Mom is a good sport.
Awesome work Frank as always. I love the way you solved the double end problem and the clever little set of shelves at the end with double purpose. Great for the little knick knacks.
What a great job Frank, nice work and, kepted mom and dad happy!!
.....great show Frank...love the design....would give anything to spend day in shop with my mom.......lucky man.
Great video, I especially like the fact you put your mum to work. I'm going to start implementing that strategy too.
What a good son you are. Nice job Frank.
Your design and work is impeccable! Yes, drilling that many holes can take a very long time. When I made lots of kitchen cabinets I ended up buying a line boring machine which is great for constant cabinetry building.
What a great project and video. Nice to see your mom helping out.
Frank... i just want to copy your stuff. Completely and without changing anything. Ive been going backwards through your videos and you've brilliant and simple and elegant solutions to virtually everything im overwhelmed with trying to fix or remodel in my own home.
Thank you for these videos, the simplicity, and artistic takes on these solutions. Not sure where i will start but i love all that you do
Frank, your channel is my favorite. I always look forward to your videos. Keep on, keepin' on!
I think its really great that you did this for your parents! And it does look like a library!
I like the idea of a knick-Knack / small book rack on the end of the bookcase run. I am going to steal that idea for my one.
Great work Frank, both on the construction and the video editing. And excellent work getting Mum in to do the drilling!
I like that you tell us your thinking and your videos are top notch, great editing and effects. Your craft skills allow the artist and engineer to create some superb projects. So having said all that, you are close to being a RUclips god... Which reminds us that your Mom made you. We bow to the MOM. Great job! Thanks for sharing with us Frank.
Frank Howarth. You are a Genius!!!!
Well done Frank's mum, rolling her sleeves up and getting stuck in.
wow working with parents is the best you are lucky.
Thanks for the video. I really like the way you explain your process and problem solving. And as always, love the stop motion.
You've made such a woodworking project into an artwork. Simple yet beautiful.
Another great video Frank. I love that you got your mom to do the holes - and Dad got some air time too!
A fine looking project that is both useful and beautiful.
Slick job Frank. Well filmed too. You've given a total rookie some good tips. Cheers!
Thanks for sharing as always. I like working with my mom in the shop too.
How AWESOME is this video!!! 😍
Thank you, thank you for sharing!!!
The visuals in the beginning are so well executed
Good to spend time with mom in the shop. Nice work.
You either have a fantastic Mom, or a twisted idea of payback. LOL (My Mom actually taught me my first lessons in woodworking when I was 7 years old. Bless her heart.)
Very well done. Hats of to you sir. Simple and clever, that´s the way it should be done.
I look forward to all your videos. Nice touch with the small shelf support on the end. Great job Frank!
That is one hell of a bookshelf! Not to mention a lifetime of books. If that were in our house it's hold 4 iPads, haha.
I like the projects where you get your friends and family involved. And like always, great video!
LOL Nagging, knick-knacks, and boundless love. Moms are great. :)
Very nice, and the fact that you did it for your parents it only makes it even better, good work!
Wow! Beautiful! They do have a lot of books!!!
Kudos to your mom for the great work!
You have an interesting way of looking at things. I guess we all do, but your ideas seem to make more sense than most of us! I like the simplicity and low cost of this design. I agree, it ended up looking even better than I thought it would from when you first described your plan.
Oh frank, I'm always impressed about your videos, I don't do this wood stuff, but the only person i love to watch doing this thing and make me smile about it, is YOU! I love your work frank, Keep it up! the Bookshelves are Awesome, ended up great! my greetings to your lovely parents
+Hmarichane Thanks!
Book shelf turned out really nice.
