    WOW! You are a true craftsman. Its nice to see there are people like you around to build bookcases and entertainment centers, instead of the IKEA products that most of us have to endure.

    Bookcases! My favorite subject! I love watching wood shop videos because like everything else, it has its own lingo that you have to learn. When you said "toe kicks" I kept waiting for you to break out into some ballet or other dance moves. LOL!!!! I have much to learn.

    It’s so refreshing to see a working business with a RUclips channel as opposed to weekend hobbyists. I’d love to know how you find the time to work on your actual wood shop (ie cabinets, storage etc.) between client jobs!
    Fantastic channel mate. Great work.

    • @MikeFarrington
      @MikeFarrington  6 лет назад +2

      Thank you. Finding time is not easy, Its just something I force myself to do. When it comes time to build stuff for the shop, I justify it by considering how much time it will save me over the next few jobs. i.e. having a better system of organization will help produce work faster. If you look around my shop carefully, I really have not built very many storage solutions and lots of things are messy and unorganized. I hope to change that slowly over the next year or so. I will video as much as I can.

    Terrific project Mike. Making great use out of a space most folks would miss. Fine organization. I hope you have good luck with the thinner MDF drawer bottoms. I ended up going back and replacing the stuff I used in my shop with plywood. It wasn’t too much work and anytime spent in the shop is premium time for me.

    • @MikeFarrington
      @MikeFarrington  5 лет назад

      So far I have not had a MDF drawer bottom become a problem. I have on occasion, put a rib under the bottom of a drawer for added strength. Also, if a drawer is going to get really heavy use, I use 1/2".

    Oh, and you have THE best tools. Honestly didn’t even know some of the tools you had existed :)

      Thats great to hear. Thank you for the kind words. Its funny, people are always looking to save a buck on tools, I get that. I'm in a different boat, I'm looking for value in a tool, the Domino provides tons of value when considering its cost. I have spent a lot more on tools that do a lot less. For the hobby woodworker all the way to the high end pro, the Domino is a tool of many uses. I'm happy to hear you like yours. Also, I'd just like to mention that, to their loss, Festool isn't paying me to say this either.

    Fantastic job as always Mike. I wish you'd take more care over dust though. It's not the dust you can see that's the problem, it's the tiny particles that stay in the air for days that you can only see through bright light occasionally. Your lungs can't eject them and they stay there and come back and get you later.
    I love that up-down bench, I considered doing something like that with an old hospital bed but never did anything about it. Love those specialist machines.

    Mike,
    Thanks for this video from a fellow Coloradan.
    I am building a cabinet for the front garage (4 drawers...cabinet with shaker door...cabinet with shaker door..4 drawers).
    BEFORE watching this video I just had plain old SLAB MDF for the drawer fronts.
    AFTER watching...I saw how you used a traditional shaker style with the drawers ABOVE your cabinets.
    So...out to the workshop (undisclosed secret location in Colorado, too) and cut up the MDF slabs and re-worked them into the same as the adjacent Shaker style cabinet doors!
    For the STILES...used the same thickness as the adjacent cabinet doors.
    For the RAILS...used 1/2 of stile width...anything else...and the center portion would have been way too tiny! Yikes.
    Jeez...the now look so much more consistent with the center cabinet shaker style doors!
    WHAT THE HECK WAS I THINKING?
    OK...this is my FIRST big 104" wide cabinet project ever.
    Now it's going to turn out really GORGEOUS...with some inspiration from a fellow Coloradan!
    Got an email? Like to send you pics when it's done.
    Don't do Instagram, etc.

    Hey Mike. I too am in Colorado-Aurora to be exact. It's been near 80 all week, so I'm expecting a temperature drop with snow and cold shortly 😆.
    I see so many RUclipsrs with equipment I'm envious of. Festool stuff is superb, but the cost is way beyond what garage DIYers like me can afford. I like the way you work: efficient and straightforward.
    I'll be checking out more of your videos to see what I can learn. Keep up the good work!
    One more thing: I really like the hidden door latches. Very interested.

    • @MikeFarrington
      @MikeFarrington  6 лет назад

      Thank you. I'm pretty close to Aurora. I hear ya, I'm sure it will snow in the next week or two, we are due for one more. I fully understand the high cost of tools. Its not easy, and there really isn't a good answer. My solution has been to slowly save and buy as I find deals. Not sure thats the best business advice but its worked for me. I really like the tip on hardware as well. I think its the best on the market. Give my other videos a watch, let me know what you think.

    Honestly I keep coming back to your older videos, they are so packed full of knowledge and tips on cabinet making.
    Usually you are adding solid wood edging. Here you are painting the mdf directly. How difficult is it to paint the mdf edge and why do one over the other?

    • @MikeFarrington
      @MikeFarrington  7 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you. I use my sanding disc to prep the edge, I use only high quality MDF, which is denser. It's easy to paint the edges. Both ways have advantages, but what I like about this way is there will be no witness line where the solid and MDF come together.

    Hey Mike,
    When I have to make a shelf 1 1/4, I use this stuff call SLCMDF. which stands for spruce lumber core with a MDF cross band. Then I glue a piece of mdf to the front edge. Its a lost lighter that solid 1 1/4 MDF

    • @MikeFarrington
      @MikeFarrington  5 лет назад

      Thank you. This is a really good trick, but then I would need to contend with the glue joint between the panel and edging. Not a big deal, but sometimes it can show down the line.

      Hi Mike, Thank you very much. My sister lived near Water Town NY for a while, they got huge snow up there. I don't build too many kitchens. Since I am a one man shop, I can't turn them out fast enough to meet client demands. If I bump into the right client (not in a hurry), I will build them a kitchen. I mostly do built-ins, mantels, wall paneling, free standing furniture, and other small items. My large shop and tool set is the result of constant bargain hunting over many years. I love tools and I love hunting for deals.

  • @MaydaysCustomWoodworks
    @MaydaysCustomWoodworks 5 лет назад +1

    I really like your format man. You arent a crazy editor and full time RUclipsr, but you are still good at it. The star is the woodworking and serving your clients. I think I'm gonna start a woodworking channel with the same kinda idea. Maybe a little more unfinished since Idk what I'm doing with it lol. I honestly dont know what the profit margin is for RUclips and I dont have high hopes with my youtube plan. Cabinet making is the profitable heart of my income and I dont expect that to change any time soon. But I think it would be cool to talk more about woodworking and my process with people, get their feedback, and have an avenue for clients to see their cabinets and furniture come to life.
    By the way, I normally use super refined MDF for paintable edges but I never thought of edge banding MDF if I can't get my hands on some super refined. Might even be nice to get some 5/8 ultra light and edge band it instead of lugging around 3/4 super refined sheets lol. Unless it has to be routed of course.
    Anyways, love the channel man. I love seeing your method to building all your stuff. Am always looking to steal ideas from any pro I see. I have stolen many ideas from you and will continue to do so lol. Thanks Mike.

    • @MikeFarrington
      @MikeFarrington  5 лет назад

      Thank you very much. Get going on your channel, it can only help. All I use is super refined MDF, when I'm using MDF. In this video I used a combination of MDF (for the painted surfaces) and melamine for the interiors. I was edge banding the melamine.

    • @MaydaysCustomWoodworks
      @MaydaysCustomWoodworks 5 лет назад

      @@MikeFarrington ahhh. Got it. Sounds good! By the way, idk what brand of melamine you have access to. But i have American Laminates Melamine which is good stuff. Have you ever tried sanding your melamine to 220g and just hitting it with a top coat instead of using MDF for a paintable surface (if you dont see the edges of course)

    Just an FYI to those of you having an interest in Mike’s crazy cool, commercial/expensive, adjustable work table. I acquired a well-made hospital gurney which has a hydraulic, foot-pedal actuated, adjustable height mechanism. It also has large, lockable wheels so it rolls around my shop very easily. All four wheels lock with each wheel having a single operational locking mechanism that locks/unlocks all four wheels. Fancy engineering.
    One last point, make sure you get a gurney with two support pedestals rather than one. The one downside to the unit I have is that there is only one pedestal in the center so I tend to get some rocking which should be mitigated significantly with a two pedestal model.
    I found it was a little difficult locating my gurney but they are available If you’re diligent in your search.

    Technology and quality suitable for the pantry. Tacker-staples-drill-screws-glue - it will not fall apart, but it is not a piece of furniture for the living room :) A Japanese carpenter, watching this, would have a heart attack :)

      When you pay me, I'll build it how every you want. I'll hand cut dovetails and use no power tools to build it. When its someone else who is paying, I'll let them decide. Literally, this design and material selection was specified by the customer. Not every person can afford top quality construction, for that I don't turn them away.

    • @KraeuterDZ
      @KraeuterDZ 6 лет назад +1

      Ok, I understand. The customer is our master, even when the order does not like us ... :) Life...

    • @MikeFarrington
      @MikeFarrington  6 лет назад

      Yes, the customer is always right. If I were building the things that I wanted to build, they would look nothing like this one. Solid wood, dove tails, mortise and tenon, etc. but I need to earn a living and pay some bills.

      I confirm: life is quite brutal and often forces us to - let's call it - unwanted simplifications. And our soul is crying then... But do not worry about it anymore - it is practically in every profession. And we must believe that although, from time to time we get a task that will give us real pleasure and satisfaction. Kind regards, D.

      I am a tool lover myself. I just missed out on a 25" Northfield planer from the 70's. I couldn't get a forklift and help fast enough before it sold. I have plans in the future to restore a few old machines when I have the time and cash. Yes, the yellow head gear are noise canceling muffs. They have an AM FM radio and an input for an iPod. I listen to a mix of news, podcasts, audio books and music (classic rock mostly). Yes, more videos to come, I have 3 in the works currently. Thank you, our little kiddo is the best, we love him dearly.

    I'd love a video on hinges and other cabinet hardware. As someone that doesn't do cabinets all the time, its hard to know what to buy and how to use/install it properly.

    • @MikeFarrington
      @MikeFarrington  6 лет назад +1

      Its on the way. I promise. I fully understand not using the hardware enough to get comfortable. My goal with the video will be to arm you with a couple setups for a few common situations so there is no guessing, just buy and install.

    Hi Mike, and hello from Scotland, just want to say I love your videos, like u I really rate my festool domino,but instead of buying the smaller model there is an adapter on eBay that allows you to use the smaller bits on the 700.works great and costs about $60 big difference anyway keep up the great work I take great inspiration from you.
