"Viktor, something's different. You've changed. What did you do?" Heimerdinger says this to Viktor after seeing the hexcore for the first time. What does it mean? This is before Viktor used the hexcore, it's before he used Singed's shimmer, it's before he killed Sky -- so what's actually changed? There are two possibilities, one that's more character based and another that's more lore based. Did inventing the hexcore signal a shift in Viktor's personality and way of seeing his place in the world? Or has he started to be corrupted by the Void through his blood mixing with the hexcore? Both show us an interesting nuance, not just in Viktor's character arc, but in Heimerdinger's as well.

Viktor was just bedridden and he's on his feet again here. I think he noticed a physical change yeah. He also has more colour in his face already.
Hex crystals are not void magic. They are pure magic/crystal scorpionmagic
@@dakilla123 He didnt change himself with hexcrystals, he used the hex*core* + Shimmer he got from Singed which IS void magic
@@littlepinktiger3891 If I remember correctly, Viktor hasn't used the shimmer yet at this point.
@@matman730 Wait he hadnt? Man Im getting my timeline mixed up here. In that case he isnt connected to the Void yet, but he is connected to the Arcane.
Just speculation now but, maybe these two things are never meant to mix? and by combining them within himself hes accidentally created the end times? It would be a pretty stereotypical plot line, I know, but I think it would be really cool if we ended up meeting another mage who finds out what Vik did and just *loses it* because Viktor maybe just caused the potential end of the world or something. Unlikely, but that was where my mind went first.
@@dakilla123 with colour i mean he just looks healthier. Not corrupted or anything.
I thought it was just Viktor standing straight. He crouched a lot before, was about to go whole "shadow of jayce" arc. But then he like regained strength, posture and prob implicitly confidence.
Good eye, didn’t notice that.
Heimerdinger the philosopher vs. Heimerdinget the observant
I liked this moment because Heimerdinger knows Viktor more than anyone else in the show, He worked for him before even meeting Jayce and Heimerdinger trusted him enough to let him lock up the archives without supervision. That implied a good trust and usually years of working together.
When you know someone for so many years, you notice ANY change. Physical, personnality, even if you can't put your finger on exactly why you just feel something is off, different.
Well said.
Heim is also magic. The whole race is about portals and messing with time-space. Hexcore possibly pings his special senses.
Yeah kinda feels like his a dear friend who suddenly got very healthy combined with heimes knowledge of dangerous tech use is more why he is worried and not some egoistic need to see things happen his way where Zaunites die young or whatever...
This just made me rethink some of my past relationships and I unlocked some memories of this very feeling that I had without realizing. Kinda mindblown right now 😭🤯
Heimerdinger is a Yordle so I lean towards the later because they as a species are naturally magical and have a deeper tie to the magic of Runeterra than other races, I interpreted that line as whatever Viktor had done had left a kind of magical residue on him that was different than what might of been around him working with Hextech. Using that as a way to show that this wasnt Hextech anymore this was something different and now it had attached itself to Viktor through the absorption of his blood.
One theory I read was that all the parts of him that were transformed into that mix of organic metal are from the void (that Mages commune with if I remember correctly) and the Hexcore is becoming sentient, so it could be heimerdinger feeling either the magic or the being that is tied to Viktor now
Agreed. It's clear that something did change physically since Viktor just seemed to be in a better state overall, but I feel like Heimerdinger could also sense a sort of magical or personality shift in Viktor. Maybe he was able to sense how the hexcore was already beginning to change him.
or 3rd Theory: Heimerdinger just realised Viktor is looking hotter than usual

i don't think that's possible tbh

Heimerdinger: “it’s cuz you always on that damn phone”
Nooooooo hahaha!
Wait but comic joke wise, hypothetically speaking, what would happen if the main cast members (independently or all together a la you need to see this shit) discovered the darkest recesses of the internet? And what dyou think it'd be specifically? Would it be something like the Homestuck fluids bucket incident or the Funky Flaying? Either way Heim's gonna start petitioning for Tiktok's banning.
Even in a short video like this, I'm BLOWN AWAY by Arcane's facial expressions. I love Viktor's expression when he says, "What do you mean, Professor?"
It’s probably a combination of both. I really like your dual interpretations for the one line, different layers of meaning. I also hadn’t thought about the Void being involved before, but it makes sense from the imagery of the Hexcore.
Viktor: Finally, I can save myself.
Heimerdinger: Don't you fking dare.
I actually came to a 3rd conclusion:
Viktor never changed, but Himerdinger either once saw a former friend use magic for evil that presumably caused the apocalypse shown in his flashback, or he thinks that Viktor is being ‘corrupted’ by the Hexcore.
He’s so afraid of magic that he gets a bit delusional and thinks that this is a ‘corrupted by the dark side’ situation instead of the reality of the situation, all due to his past trauma.
The cool thing is that since Arcane is good at restraint, it could be all three interpretations, which is great because it gives us a ton of insight into how Hemidinger thinks.
Heimerdinger fears magic because as yordles are immortal because time works differently in bandle city, heim was around during the runewars and watched first hand how magic corrupts and consumes people.
That "apocalypse" you're seeing was actually memories of the Rune War that happened in the ancient past of Runeterra. Heimerdinger was alive to experience it, and the results of that war changed the world forever. Hell, the reason Demacia is afraid of magic and mages is BECAUSE their ancestors had seen the terrible, destructive power of strong magic in the hands of mages and sought to stay away from it and keep mages out of their lands (which was impossible to do forever since many people in that world are born with magical talents be they Yordles, Humans, or Vastaya)
this is exactly how i interpreted it when i first watched it: heimerdinger is paranoid about the magic's potential and the possibility of it corrupting anyone, thus bringing about what he fears. so what does he do to try to subvert it ? project those fears onto someone he knows has been dabbling in its workings.
@@evelynnlol and what's worse is his assistant is working with void magic, so it isn't even the normal type of magic! Its a new addition to the lore, because I'm pretty sure the hexcore was just hextech before, but now its void magic in Arcane
This
“Did I just catch you tryna’ live n’ shit?” - Heimerdinger (Abridged)
Heimerdinger just noticed a physical change. He even looks up and down Viktor in confusion. It's a pretty straight forward scene, there's no much to read into it. Heimerdinger has known Viktor for the longest time, it makes sense that he notices slight changes in physicality.
“guys Occam’s razor is applicable to screenwriting right”
@@frog4307yes, it is in many cases. Using it is certainly better than making things up with no basis in the script like this video does.
I just hope they make Viktor kind but miss understood like in his canon lore instead of just evil just because he found a way to not die.
Arcane hasn’t yet treated any character in a reductive manner
@@jensboettiger5286 If anything, they're treated better than canon lore at points
@@TechnoArpanseriously, also, doesn’t cannon Victor want to replace all biological parts with mechanical ones? And doesn’t take no for an answer? Doesn’t sound very misunderstood to me, especially because not dying is not natural and usually twists people’s minds. Look at almost, if not all, the undead characters in the lore! It isn’t just empowerment, it actively fights against the way you were born to function, so messing with that WILL mess with your mind!
@@JCArules13I was pretty sure Viktor still only wanted to replace all HIS biological parts with mechanical one's, because he's seen how weak flesh is. To become the perfect creation of Life. He's a wisdom seeker and wants to become perfect, immortal and enhance himself forever. There's nothing evil about his character, even tho he's stoic and slowly stops seeing the "worth of biological life", as described by me due to a lack of more fitting words 😅
He gets obssesed with technology and magic, but not for evil reasons.
@@JCArules13 He doesn't force it on other people, he promotes it. He's misunderstood, Jayce is the evil one in his story.
I find it interesting that this is one of the few times where Heimerdinger seems to truly acknowledge the state of a human being while he usually just sees humans as these short-lived beings. Also Heim appears to find change in general off-putting. The change in Victor might be something he has seen before, something that he has witnessed as the omen of disaster
The Scene where Viktor does the "Forrest Gump" (first run in years/since ever) gets me every time 😭
I think its more that Viktor has jumped from barely being able to stand without his cane, to now being on his feet and energised and barely using the cane in the space of 1 afternoon.
I also noticed that in this scene were victor connects with the hexcore is happening the same time Mel takes Jayce to bed I could be overthinking it but it could be representing an arc for both of them almost a symmetrical parallel. The two characters are becoming more intimately connected with something at the same time and hence them having thematic symmetry.
The feature viktor(ingame) hes already like a cyborg inventing things to help humanity like blitzcrank(a golem made to help humans)
Or it’s like a parent trying to find a reason to take away a teen’s phone
I always thought it was Heimerdinger noticing that Victor was looking less sick, and that he was mad because he was using hextech on a person.
He is a innately magical creature. He definitely saw a magical difference along with simple body language that victor is standing straight and proud instead being sick
Victor is not a slave, his master was death.. and now he is unchained.
I know we should be serious and all but I felt a punch on my gut when I heard "Pure Boy, Viktor". Sheesh *bites lip*
Wow good job. You pointed out the obvious.
Hexcores are powered by crystal scorpion souls, iirc, they're not even void related
I saw a video about heimedinger's immortality and him possibly having PTSD, in the video it's explained that maybe heimedinger's just can't see how someone would act when they now they will die, and that's why he reacts this way
Viktor acting like someone with a future now, he is so happy now.
Victor using the Shimmer to complement the hex core blew my mind. Such a simple and effective solution. Singed was a genius
Fun fact: in the german version, Heimerdinger has the same voice actor as Spongebob
I always interpreted it as spirit shenanigans, what with him being one and all.
I always just thought he was commenting on Victor looking healthier
I think when I saw this scene originally, I thought it was the personality change, though calling it personality feels like it's downplaying the importance of the change that's happened. I kinda feel like it's more a change of being (which sounds stupid). But to me that idea kinda encompasses both the physical change (you're all of a sudden very confident or self assured, the way you present yourself to others, like standing taller once you become more confident) and then also the personality change of being more inspired about your change
I just thought He was picking up on Viktor being "enchanted" by it.
Viktor is looking at it with love in his eyes (with good reason, mind you) but Heimerdinger doesn't trust magic, and given his first reaction to the core, he sees red flags
Like the first interpretation…
As viktor seemed to admire his teacher not even to dare to cross him.
The idea of changing the world connected viktor to heimerdingger
The fact that he barely seeks his teachers approval.
He was sooo excited to first show hextech his teacher .
A small inconsistency maybe I can shed some light on.
Zaun only exists as a dream with vander and Silco.
It’s one that vander let go off bc of new life to protect those he loves.
In silcos eyes zaun can exist but it’s a.man idea like he sees jinx as being perfect.
In reality she’s the broken parts of powder.
In silcos mind It’s our broken parts that make us more then what we are.
So, there never is a zaun. Jinx is not interested in creating zaun.
Jinx is bent on choas and the fair nature of destruction.
Just like the hextech took her life without restraint or bias.
Vi is like vander sees a corellation between her actions and consequences.
It’s always about the price of progress
So it’s not zaun and without vander it’s not the lanes.
It’s a monster created by shimmer , def not the free nation of zaun… nor would it ever be under Silco
Heimerdinger is literally Magic. He is made of Magic as all Yordles are. He can easily sense magic and can differentiate all its types because of both his line of work and life experience.
Theory #2 is the closest assumption to what I thought as well.
Yet alone, Viktor is just trying to live a life where he's needed.
Poor Victor, a great scientist as well as a friend
heimerdinger is literally just trying to prevent the end of the world and people act like he's the secret villain
Considering what viktor becomes later on both of these theories aren’t far off.
Honestly i went from thinking viktor was a boring champ, to him being one of my favorites because of this show. I really liked his character
How'd you think he was boring?! Did you ever even read the lore on him? 😭 Or listened to his voice lines...? 😅 He was one of my favorites since forever hahaha
@@slatka_maco i didnt find his gameplay appealing was the problem
@@jacobpartin4553 yeah that I get hahaha
I think maybe the meaning is more simple. Viktor sicness was visiable, and he was getting worst by the day. However, in that scene, he was displaying a much more healthy appereance, and that was Himmer saw.
I think that the"difference" in his personality is more due to that. I mean, when you feel sic every second, is dying from the deseas, and it only get worst by the day, its natural to feel more gloomy or be more harsh. And if you get better, or até least feel better, that probably will reflect in a improvement of your mood. Not to mention that his discovery and experimenting represents a hope of living longer, witch obsvioously gives him hope.
I know arcane is a masterpiece and have a lot of details, but no every line or scene needs to be a theory or a foreshadow.
Immortal Viktor, i don't mind infinite sigma aura :0
I always thought that his blood mixing with the core meant that his illness corrupted it.
Something I thought about was Jinx's quote ''He didn't make Jinx, you did.'' towards Vi. When Powder last saw Vi, Vi's last words where ''Because you are a Jinx'', Silco wasn't the one who called her Jinx, Vi did.
Vi said Powder is a Jinx, she didn't ask her to change her name from powder to jinx
Viktor is a precious-feeling boyo. I dunno why I love him, but I do.
Victor's gonna get cyberpsychosis like Cyberpunk.
Victor's weakness is gone. That's a massive and sudden change given his cane is integral to his character.
My theory is that his behavior has changed because of him injecting himself with shimmer.
He hasn't used shimmer yet in that scene though
He was always raggedy looking and coughing. He sounds and looks better when heimer sees him.
I lean to the later because Heimendinger actually knows magic and because even though he is ignorant to hardship he isn't malicious.
I for one can't wait to see Viktor join the glorious evolution
Viktor has always been my favorite character and every theory/analysis of him just makes me love him more and more I swear. He’s such a complex character, and I know everyone in arcane is but as someone with a chronic illness and a disability he has always stood out to me. His only “sin” was wanting to live, to find a way to help others like himself.
My interpretation: Viktor's eyes glisten with Hope of finding an "easy" fix, which makes Heim nervous because he already knows that magic can turn him to something he witnessed in the past... Like the wish fullfilling genie, it comes with a non expected cost, like the assistant being sucked by the thing
I like the first theory because it goes really well with your heimerdinger video because of him being immortal and having seen everything. But I also like the spiritual change too
Arcane could be rewritten with Heimer painted as the villain. He's a little, inert, immortal shit.
He is a villian
*antagonist.
He’s certainly done enough Subtext against Zaun to qualify as a villain, but he’s not frames like a villain the way Silco and Marcus are. His direct involvement in Arcane’s Plot vs subtext/things happening before Arcane is basically “Heimerdinger telling Jayce and Viktor NO”
Which, whereas Marcus acknowledges to himself that he made a deal with the devil and feels “trapped” to continue it, and Silco makes no ilusions that he isn’t a Monster (although he believes his actions are “justified”-even against the zaunites he claims to fight for), Heimerdinger is still “likeable” by basically everyone, including Zaunites like Ekko, and Heimerdinger doesn’t view himself as “a bad guy” at all.
Why isn’t Heimerdinger a villain, but an antagonist instead? Because the world of Arcane is shown to universally like him, and he exudes “likeable charm.” Which I think adds to his subtext-some really “likeable” people in positions of power can create/perpetuate/turn a blind eye to the suffering their actions cause. (And in this case because Heimerdinger is THE founder and held a council position until Jayce motioned for him to be booted out? Heimerdinger’s all three.)
Hiemerdinger escapes being a villain, by simple virtue of the fact that the dangers he is trying to protect the world from are real. Nobody else remembers the disasters except him, but he's not *just* some sanctimonious snob waving his creed in everyone's faces. He's seen the dangers that void magic can bring, and he has a reasonable grounds to be afraid. He is a Cassandra Prophet, and though the people reject his message, the doom he foretells is still coming.
Now, he is an out of touch old fogey. He can't effectively empathize with the mortals he is supposed to be leading, well enough to communicate why they need to make the sacrifices he demands, for the safety of the society as a whole. Maybe Ekko can teach him what he needs to know, in order to accomplish his mission, now that he has found the humility to listen to younger voices.
A villain? He has no bad intentions, doesn't intentionally hurt anyone. A villain isn't someone who's just ignorant of the bad side of things or too naive and passive
@@TechnoArpan he's a genius, and he founded piltover (and I assume he's held a chair since its beginning). Being ignorant of the world is an excuse for a peasant, not someone who has ruled a city all of their immortal life.
Thank you so much for this!!! I was just thinking about this scene and wishing you had a video on it, I really appreciate seeing your interpretation of this very vague scene, its been perplexing me for a while.
It could be tied to the fact that in runeterra. Heimerdinger (and all yordles) hail from Bandlecity a magical demi-spiritual demi-physical world that was distroyed by magic from humans so some yordles left Bandlecity, that could be why Heim is against magic.
Also, do not forget! Yordles are incredibly magical beings, to the point that they are immortal. Him sensing the void taint is absolutely plausible
That deserve a bigger video!!!
Heimer is a Yordle... These creatures don't see people the way people do. I read somewhere that they can actually see life forces and can easily vibe with magical forces.
considering heimerdingers age, and the history of runtera, he has a point
humans that go against their nature end up becoming monsters (darkin, mordekaiser, shadow isels, etc)
Worth mentioning that the magical change that the hexcore underwent looked like the void. Which would be an unexpected twist coming into season 2. Imagine they rework victor into a malzahar, a bringer of the void. Or maybe he remains attached to his mechanical evolution but it’s fueled by a desire to reject the void.
Ngl, i'd watch an entire show just based around Arcane's Viktor storyline
Maybe it's both?
This is before the "reunion" with Singe, but Viktor is already headed there.
I think theory #1 also fits well with the "Do you contemplate death?" talk between Victor and Heim.
Considering how connected yordles are to magic he definitely could sense that hexcore connection
bros hair is immaculate
Yordles are not just inbred animals or something, they are spirits deeply connected with magic. Heimer must've felt the hexcore's magic fusing to Viktor's body.
wonderful analysis as always
i haven't rewatched arcane in a while but thats because i'm waiting to do it with my friend group!
i'll have my eyes peeled for all these ideas you've so wonderfully put together
thanks you for your amazing insights, schnee!!
"Join the glorious evolution"
Heimerdinger is a yordle, they are magical being, so he is sending the magical change
I think the latter is more probable, as heimer is actually a being of magic, which is easy to forget in the show
I was thinking that Heimerdinger just wanted to find a reason to accuse the orb to get it destroyed, and he felt something vaguely different about Victor and jumped on it.
“Pure boi like Viktor”
Yep
I honestly think it was both - he noticed a very wide swath of things wrong and immediately clocked each one. Doesn’t have to be mutually exclusive!
The amount of only up references mixing with the biblical last supper references makes this stream an absolute masterpiece.
Gotta remember that Viktor and Jayce hate each other in league of legends lore so the fact they have a positive relationship in arcane is going to make the fall out that much painful.
I think it was a bit of both. Not only was Viktor standing upright and looking better, yordles are an inherently magical race by nature, given how long they can live. So Heimerdinger knew something was up.
Pretty sure we had at one point mentioned somewhere that because yordles are magical beings they also see magic to a degree even non shaped. So he probably could see some sort of change in his magic aura
It's the void, Heimerdinger sense it's corruption
Heimerdinger can't control Viktor anymore, so he blames magic because he doesn't believe humans have the capability to rebel.
I always thought that his blood mixing with the magic was like the hextech equivalent of blood magic, like what the darkin do
That's not Viktor anymore.
He's now Jerma
I always enjoyed playing Victor.
People would sleep on him like crazy back in the day. So many easy punishes and trades.
Unrelated to the video but I still can’t wrap my head around Heim being a flipping YORDLE. Why are yordles so powerful they sound like wordle but as a toddler
Heimer does not understand glorious evolution!
I'd say both. "Both. Both is good."
since heimer is a being of magic
the void is propably super fking alien to him
the fact he senses it in him even faintly is propably enough to make heimer shiver
considering the fact that the void did insane shit in their world
heimer should know that
Theories are cool and all, but it’s way too early to predict much considering how little information we have on heimerdinger’s experience with magic.
I dont blame viktor like heimerdinger was expecting him to do nothing about his disease💀
Just arcane fans are gonna be in shock upcoming season for multiple characters and i hope we see the glorious evolution aswell
I prefer the first theory because it fits perfectly into Adeptus mechnicus Victor is in game, someone who feels digusted by organic glesh (his old nature)
I feel like this is some English teacher level of speculation. Heimerdinger was talking about Viktor standing and seeming healthier *_AFTER_* Viktor had that diagnosis. Sometimes the author says the curtain is blue because he likes the color blue professor, not because he’s trying to reflect his melancholic state of mind.
It’s because hiem has seen first hand what append when people were corrupted by the magic of world tunes. So he is able to see how this magic is corrupting him
I always saw it as Heimerdinger trying to gaslight him ngl
Heimer gonna be the final baddie.
GLORIOUS EVOLUTION
I think he’s sensing a magical change Viktor. Sometimes when humans are days from death they can have a moment where they feel better than their previous days, almost as if they feel cured. Kinda weird how Heimerdinger is no longer the dean at the academt after he’s voted off the council though
