Some churches have a service on a weekday as well as on Sunday. It was more common at that time period, but my church always has a Thursday night service as well as the other ones we are associated with.
I think charles was trying to convince himself it was okay(when he was explaining to the kids they would go to different) The kids took it better than he did himself. I felt so sorry for the kids.

Perhaps you weren't watching the rest of the story.. They said church on Thanksgiving Day which fell on Thursday..
