Director: Henry Hathaway Box office: 1.3 million USD (est. US/Canada rentals) Initial release: 1959 Screenplay: Sydney Boehm Plot- Mary Sharron (Susan Hayward), who must single-handedly raise her sensitive young son and oversee the family ranch after her husband is killed in an accident, hires gruff laborer Fred Carter (Stephen Boyd) to help out around the farm. Before long, local gossip Mayme Radzevitch (Barbara Nichols) spreads bawdy rumors about Frank and Mary, so the widowed mother weds her farmhand to keep the town quiet. Unfortunately, Frank's idea of tough love soon drives a wedge between Mary and her child.
That's a good movie but the message isn't one that i personally would've supported. Abuse (SA even!!) should NEVER be forgiven, nevermind to whom - a child, a man, a woman. There is no such thing as a happy ending in such a relationship. But actors did splendid.
I have mixed feelings about Fred. Charlie Barkin never forced himself on an innocent woman, and he never mistreated a child. Manipulated and used for selfish reasons, yes. But he was nicer about it and after the kid gets sick and is kidnapped in the climax, Charlie risked getting ambushed by four mean dogs, and seconds later rescuing Anne Marie from drowning in some water which somehow caught on fire, sacrificing himself in the process.
Whatcha mean? I never spoiled anything. I didn't exactly say everything that happens, nor the beginning. Besides, I was mostly talking about Fred. Charlie was more likeable than Fred to a degree.
I really love Susan Haywards acting,I have never seen a bad movie with her in it I have seen this twice.
