  • My first video, it's a bit slow and boring. But was a good test.
    On an engine with hydraulically adjusted valve clearance, the rocker cover gasket may never get changed in routine maintenance.
    The gasket on this car hasn't been changed for 120,000km's and was leaking quite badly.
    New gasket = cleaner engine bay :)

    Just done mine perfectly.
    Re-used a 13 year old one and don't leak one bit.
    Apply loctite SI 5980 in the cam cover to hold the gasket in place not forgetting to apply to the half circle rubber parts where it leaks the most.
    Leave 16-24 hours to fully cure.
    I did start it up after 2 hours after finishing the job and put the car in the garage as it was cold and getting dark and could not push it in the garage because its on a steep slope but turned off again after 5 secs and got away with it.
    But perfectly ok the next day after a 1 hour run.

  • @chrispix

    @nigeya69007 As far as I know, it's pretty common. Mine was really bad before renewing it and now it hasn't leaked since. So I'm really happy that I changed it.
    Regarding the sealant, it depends what you use. The silicone based sealant I like to use sets in about 15 minutes but it takes up to 24 hours to go off. But then again you don't have to use the sealant if you don't want to.
    Cheers.

    What is the purpose of the gasket sealant? To hold the gasket in place while putting the rocker cover back on or would a new gasket not necessarily seal up without?

    • @sanavip
      @sanavip 7 лет назад

      isnt sealing properly just gasket, changed couple month ago on my astra, leaked without sealant after first startup, only sealant help to properly seal, tried without sealing couple times, with Elring and Reinz gaskets, still leaked without sealant

  • @caveiramotorizada50
    @caveiramotorizada50 4 года назад

    Has it started to leak again? Because my one didn't stop the likeage after the gasket change, so I think that the cover is probably deformed, and it is maybe commom on this engine.

  • @John27346

    Yeah, probably. It's an excellent video though. The lighting is perfect.
    I'm doing this job myself soon. I see you use gasket seal all along the gasket. I was hoping to put the rubber gasket in with a minimum of sealant, maybe just on the spark plug rings.
    What do you think?

    Chris can you help?...My Astra G has oil on the spark plug threads and plug sealing rings
    There isnt much oil in the plug tubes but there is above them in the sides of the cam case recesses...
    Any ideas how oil would be getting down the tubes and onto the threads/ rings?
    the car isnt using major amounts of oil either?? needless to say I have high carbon build up and emmissions fail..
    Dry sooty plugs and good compression readings...
    very confused.com!

    • @chrispix
      @chrispix  9 лет назад

      switchest26 Probably fine mate. Mine had a fair bit of oil above the plugs. Dry sooty plugs sounds ok if they are not too sooty and it's a grey soot. Emissions fail could be something else going on.

    don not use any solvent like thinner to clean cover grooves it dissolves plastic will break when tightening hard. and wow, same cover as vectra b it seems....many use the red engine putty rtv high temp and will not emit cholrine gas like normal putty that destroys sensors.

    Hi there,
    Can anyone help..
    Had an oil leak at top of engine on my astra h 1.7 cdti.
    I had the Rocker cover gasket and 8 seals around cam cover replaced along with breather pipe from my local garage.
    When the engine was run there appeared to be a diesel leak from around the first and third injector, the cam cover was taken off again and checked before being put back on. Diesel was still leaking from top of engine so sealant was used around 1st and 3rd injector but then the 4th injector started leaking, the mechanic has recommended that I replace the injectors as he cannot find the problem, does anyone know what the problem could be ?
    Thanks in advance.

    can you have an oil leck from the rocker cover i put my car in to vauxhall because it wouldn't start and they sipped the top of the engine down an rebuilt it to make sure the was no damage and re done the timings now i have an oil leck coming from the around the rocker cover down the front of the engine

    • @lofturhjalmarsson295
      @lofturhjalmarsson295 7 лет назад

      yes , can try to tighten it a little more but too much can make groove edge bite through the gasket if it is protruding from too much sealant under it

    • @chrispix

      OPCRoss Genuine. I find that the breather pipe that connects the crank case to the head leaks a lot. It might just be that if it's around that corner.

    • @chrispix

      +Ale. Costa I actually do not recommend that blue hose at all. It leaks oil through the silicone and after a year or two has discoloured and looks pretty bad. When I get around to replacing it, I will go back to a standard one or I'll have to find a better quality aftermarket one.

      That a 1,6L 8V X16SZR? Change your inlet to shorter and wider, upsize the injectors, bigger exhaust, lighter flywheel and a remap. It is a big job for a little hp gain, it is more giving just to swap the entire engine for something bigger.

    I'm just about to do this for the turd time on daughters 2.2 Vectra it last about a year then lets go oil pissing every where, this time gonea shoot down to the wreckers Pic and Payless and get another valve cover 30 bucks for the nicest straightest looking one I can find and try that because the valve cover on hers seams to be just starting to disintegrate inside where the gasket flange on cover meets the head which I hadn,t notice before so hopefully that will fix it once and for all cya Neil.

    I've never understood why the pipe goes over the top of the engine! Such a bad design. It must heat the air up. How about an air filter housing from a 2.2litre on which the outlet comes out of the front? Then you stick a small pipe from that to the turbo. It should make a bit of difference and will fit if you don't have aircon. If you have, then it might take a bit more imagination. For someone with your experience it will not be a problem.
