- Slab City... the squatter's paradise. A place that anyone can live for free. A place with it's own rules, it's own societal norms, a place of creation and freedom for all that are looking for a different way of life. This is my take on it as I visit to go play the infamous Saturday open mic night at The Range venue.

When your poor you do what you got to do to SURVIVE ! Years ago my husband and I spent a few winters in Slab city ! It’s true about the trashed places ! But there are trashed area’s ALL OVER AMERICA! We got a few gallons of paint donated to the original Salvation MOUNTAIN! The man who started this beautiful project was a very nice man ,a good human being ! R I P! you made a difference in the lives of slab city’s residents and in turn the world 🌎🌍🌏 👍❤️🕊🙏
So grateful I got to meet Leonard be for his passing. RIP that beautiful soul got to hang out with him at a hotel in Calipatria.
How did you empty your holding tanks and fill water tanks? Do ya have to leave every couple of weeks or as necessary?
I love the way you look at the life style with out judging them you are a great man
I live about 45 miles south of Slab City in a small farm town. Awesome to see you down this way. Alot of cool stuff around here. Enjoy the visit.
The bags on the trees are to catch the dates...they are date palms. I lived in Indio as a child in 1965.
Glad you got to visit Slab City! It’s quite the adventure! Loads of colorful folks living the life. I can’t wait to see your evening at The Range. It should be fun👍🏻Thanks for sharing. Be safe and enjoy❤️👍🏻
Been living here for 10 years now, like everywhere there is good and bad 👍🇺🇸😎🌵🌞
How's the weed there
@@jonmacdonald5345 it's good👍
@@capt.jackoffgrid ah I like it better than that I smoke the flame that killed john Wayne!
Right on man! Exactly how it felt:)
@@jonmacdonald5345 the weed is top notch, and not expensive. Straight up.
Ive been to slab ther were a bunch of tweekers and drunks, great place to raise a family.
lol yup all walks of life there
At least they are out in the boonies not bothering anybody
I'm sure you know by now but for others watching, his name was Leonard Knight. He has an amazing story that led him to build Salvation Mountain.
Yup!
They're called dates date palm trees just down the road from there they have an ice cream shop where they make it they make date shakes
Yep the knight armor these ans date shakes are amazing
The armor one is on the other side of town, I think hes talking about the one going to North Shore
The? Is how many date's went and got date shakes on the date and which date it was if no list then they can start 1
@@pieluvr7362 hahaha!! If you can handle them dates then start 1 or 2!
To answer your question regarding FedEx and UPS, yes they deliver to slabs, using the addresses on tired and fences. Google maps helps a lot too
Always have mad respect for RV'ers, VanLife'rs who cover Slab City..... Still looks liveable. Good to see.
My Uncle lived there. His retirement only gave him $450 a month. So this is home SWEET home no dissing
Leonard made it his life's work to spread the message that God is love and it doesn't get any cooler than that, rest in peace Leonard 🙏 ❤
Yup he seemed like a special character.
Before I started my business I worked as a caseworker for the state and you are 100% right when you say the transient community is some of the most creative awesome people. Since then I’ve gone to some of the local homeless spots around town to keep in touch with some people I know. Sucks how people can be so judgmental. The local churches won’t give them cash because they are afraid they will spend it on alcohol. Sorry imo what they do with their money isn’t my business. Yes addiction sucks but you can’t force someone who isn’t ready. ❤️ love your videos Timmy. You are such a free spirit. Wish there was more men in the world that had the same outlook on life as you do 😉
@Christi Halsey...So you give homeless alcoholics and drug users cash knowing there is a 50% chance your supporting their addiction and your indifferent to that? From the churches perspective, I wouldn't give them cash either.
@@Vlfkfnejisjejrjtjrie there is also the other 50% they may not use it on their addiction (that is if there is one) can’t assume either way. Point is if you are willing to give your money to someone for whatever then it needs to be because you are not having expectations as to what that person does with it, it’s because you wanted to do it. There are MANY large scale organizations out there we have all donated to that didn’t do what they were supposed to do with the money we donated for what we thought it was going to. Yet we believe them? Because they are not in hard times? Don’t judge a book by its cover. God bless!
I have friends that tell me they really like it there and then others not so much. It definitely has individual character which has its' own appeal and has my curiosity about going there for a visit. I really love the idea of being off-grid in somewhat a community. Good and not so good come with that. Thanks for sharing your journey there. Looking forward to the next video there.
You have multiple friends that live or have lived there? Sounds unlikely.
@@allaboutroofing2 you're reading it incorrectly. At no point did I say I had friends that lived there. Check your eyes.
Enjoyed the video! You were driving right by my house as you were saying that the Coachella Valley is unsustainable. lol! The valley sits over a massive aquifer and because the aquifer has been managed well, water levels have actually increased over the past 10 years throughout most of the Coachella Valley. It seems crazy at first blush, but Palm Springs and the rest of the Coachella Valley is doing just fine :) Cheers!
lol pretty crazy place

The Coachella Valley has tons of spring water underneath, that's why it exists.
Yes, all the surrounding Mountains supply the low line desert water table with ENDLESS water.
It also has a under ground volcano.
This area has water?

Now that’s an interesting place I’ll add to my list, thanks very much for the tour Timmy!
no worries!
That was a terrific look around Timmy. I watched a documentary on Slab city a year back and it has had me curious ever since. Looking forward to the Range night 👍
I have a channel that features a lot of slab city. I have been here for 8 seasons and recently started a channel.
I love seeing folks live free in their rvs.... it is SO American...
No man, five guys is the bomb. It's been fantastic every town I've visited and I like that.
Five guys here in Arkansas is beyond awesome man, very interesting video Timmy!
Finally, a realistic video about Slab City that doesn’t say it’s lawless and doesn’t make it seem like something it’s not. Awesome video Timmy. I love the Slabs.
It is lawless. He even showed a place that was burned out.
A common practice in the slab
@@TheCattledog2 It is not.
I have been there many many times. Sheriff and Border Patrol cruise through periodically. Fires happen by accident 99 percent of the time from out of control burn pits or bad electrical wiring etc.
@@CaptainGnarkill ok captain save a hoe
@@TheCattledog2 you've obviously never been here, sheriff and border patrol is here on a regular basis. I've been here since 2019. It is not lawless.
It's not lawless and I actually have a slab city myths video discussing this. There are 4 different law enforcement agencies that patrol here.
I also speak about the fires out here too in that video, explaining the hazards of off grid living, solar, propane, dry climate. Etc.
First heard about this place from watching that movie into the wild, didn't know it was a real place at first and it seemed like a cool place to visit.
Into the wild, freaking awesome movie
I don’t know if I would spend the night there there might be powder kegs laying about, I’m talking about people.🔥☮️🌵
The water in the Coachella Valley runs under ground.
I was there in November 2015 with my truck and travel trailer for one day passing thoug. In some ways, it still looks the same, yet in other ways it has evolved. Still loss of trash, that part hasn't changed.
Enjoyed the video, thanks. Does make me think of Mad Max's Thunderdome without the road warriors.
yup!
Seems like Slab City is place where people just want to be left the hell alone to live their lives on their terms, I cannot think of anything more American
If i am not mistaken, Palm Springs, that valley has a large underground water system, i think thats where they get their water.
Really?? Masks required in the middle of the desert with no one around? Ridiculous! Timmy I do enjoy your videos! Great adventures!
Haha, yeah, to each their own, thanks man:)
Hantavirus will put you down if you are careless.
People can decide what rules they want in thier own camps and homes.
Its great that you can set up Home in Slab City or just camp there for a while,I love the Massive painted monument....So hot n dusty in Slab City, lots of water is important, real Community....
Its the night Skies that I would love so much🙏🥰
I went there in 2020 during the pandemic and left almost as soon as I got there. The Salton Sea in general gives me the creeps. There's something about that low an elevation that takes a certain type of personality to appreciate.
Awww. Next time stop by the California Ponderosa (it's on airbnb) in slabs if you'd like a closer and safe look at town. My channel also has some info too
Go to slab city in August and take a walk around 1pm and let me know what you think😄
another generation going to slab city, good luck and dont piss off the locals
There’s water underneath all of us all you Gotta do is dig a well, and learn the real history not what they taught you
Salvation Mountain has never been the same since Leonard passed on. But every Japanese girl I meet wants to go there. :D
Leonard, the guy that made Salvation Mountain actually lived in that truck cabin and a couple of the other vehicles there.
nice!
Date palms it was cool place 50 yrs ago...
yeah definately
I know someone that grew up there, lived there for 12 years of his childhood. Of course, he’s doing a loooooong stint in Federal these days.
Ive watched several vids on slab city..i sure wouldnt chance taking a rig like yours there with your belongings in it.
Good video. Been there a few times and lets just say it wasn't as cool as it was when you visited it. On another note, I love the fact that most of your videos are around 15 minutes, not all videos need to be 30-45 minutes long...too long. Keep up the good work.
Thanks man:)
How do they empty their holding tanks and fill their water tanks? Do they have to leave every couple of weeks or as necessary? It doesn't look like it.
We have a few different FOBs behind slab city. They’d always come beg us for MREs. Hated slab city so much.
First time I hear about this place but do recognize it from the Ke$ha video, "Praying"
Yes
I love the speed limit signs . "Slow the blank down ! ".
My husband and I stayed there in our RV for several days about 25 years ago. We met some nice folks.
nice!
The biggest downside I see to Slab City is it's located in CA. (Yes, I know IL isn't any better, but hopefully I can eventually relocate.)
I didn't know. That's is so cool. It's more of an upside to me as ai am in California. I'm gonna check how far it is.
Sorry to let you know. Cauchella Valley has one of the biggest fresh water aquifers. From Palm Springs all the way past Indio. You dig less than 100 feet you hit fresh water. Even though Calif gets drought rules and laws. The Desert never has them. Been living here for many yrs, cheapest water bills in Calif
Cool seeing local attractions on youtube i live like 30 mins from here
Without the aqueducts there wouldn't be an LA, SD or any of that concrete jungle. But there is quite a bit of water under ground in the desert. And those paper wrappings keep the birds and bats from eating all the dates.
That guy with the trike…lol….reminds me of: I grew up out in the high desert and was back there. Stopped at the local little post office and an older guy comes whipping into the dirt parking lot on a beat-to-hell go cart. Got his mail, looked at me before he started the cart and said, “first time every time.” Pulled the engine to life (first pull) did a donut and was drifting that thing to the paved road. I sure do miss the desert and it’s people.
haha!
Nice to see you out here that's awesome I stay about 1hr away
I was fortunate enough to meet Leonard Knight before he passed. Super awesome guy.
Nice!

Over priced.they closed the one in Simi valley. Try smash burger.or habit.
I spend a lot of time down in Palm Desert. Slab City gets hot AF during the summer months! Interesting place though.
I posted this on a reply, but thought it deserved it's own post since it's such a critical subject on the Salton Sea and surrounding area. Many of the locals are completely unaware of the issues their inhabitance face in the coming years and I wish them all the best.
The Salton Sea story is an insane rabbit hole one really doesn't want to go down, especially if you occupy the immediate area and live in Southern California in general. All the politicians and talking heads in Sacramento are fully aware of the long last effects the Salton Sea has and it definite trajectory of drying up and becoming the largest environmental disaster in the Western US, possibly the entire US in recent history. Once it dries up (and yes it will) the alkaline, salty dust bed combined with the consistent winds in this area will saturate all of Southern California with the worst dust and environmental issues we've ever experienced. This isn't some "climate change" patrol, this is real life and it's the best kept disaster secret in Sacramento they never talk about. All is fine now, but 20, 30, 50 years from now, let's revisit this post and see what California is dealing with, if we're here at all. I wish you all the best in the coming years.
"if we're here at all' says it all! Best wishes from upstate NY!

"Masks Required" ... outside, ... in the desert ... in a junk yard ... with no one around?
Gotta be told what to do even way the fuck out there lol
For many people the ONLY thing they've ever been good at in life is following the governments directions, they can't give it up even when alone in the desert.
And how many obeyed and still obey?
Interesting, cool how close the truckcampers are the same! Lookin forward to jam night.🎶
Coming up tomorrow!
Those bags Timmy….
Are the trees nut sacks.. 🙉
I would like to know. how do people bank roll these "expaditions" and where do they work? there are still food, fuel, healthcare costs.??
Mostly they live of food pantries and food stamps
Very poor they take showers in canal
How can you require masks on land you don’t own? And why in that outdoor environment?
It because of the mindset of the ones who moved their bring their bullshit with them.
Understand the current situation was not the same as the first timers of the past...
The current situation is a new community of wish to be what they believe artist should be...
Good and bad - they have made improvement in some ways - but they do have a high school klan thing going on...
Out of respect - where is that not the case!
I literally laughed out loud at that. Like you are there illegally and you want to tell me what to do? Fuck off.
Your winning brother. Dig your dig. Peace and safe travels. Get a run 😊at it!❤ 16:11

Looks like a miniature off-season Burning Man…
The Dead Sea and date palms. Good old imperial valley.
I must be getting old as dirt, i remember slab city 60+ years ago, Originally was a WW2 training base for desert warfare, after WW2 it pretty much became a haven for low/ limited income old school retirees looking for hassle free- long term camping & also attracted cheap migrant snowbirds looking a free place to camp, drive their golf carts around. In the late 60's early 70's Salton Sea was just starting to evaporate & noticably degrade & decay, losing popularity as the vacationland it once was with back in the late 50's to mid 60's Sinatra & the Rat Pack, Elvis and others who lived in Palm Springs could hang out at the Restrauntes, Bars ,Resorts, Marina's, Hotels and mingle with normal people, while going mostly unnoticed. About 40 years ago the demographics of both slab city and Salton Sea communities changed, Seaside business & residential properties abandoned & a new breed of rent free campers, post hippies era relics & leftoversas well as the new homeless generation started migrating out to the desert. Much to the dismay of those retirees and snowbirds & their newfound concept of a free paradise. By then i think there was 1 cafe and 1 gas station left on the Sea. Fast forward to Now and its become an Toxic & chemical laden wasteland, and one of the EPA's worst nightmares. It's good people still have a place they can go, exist and maybe find some sense of community or personal independence if their heads are firmly attached, & are self sufficient people, but willing to share.. I left the Coachella Valley back in the late 70's as the desert was filling up those sleepy desert towns dissapeared. Now todays Gas-life video campers live off the grid & camp in Wal Mart parking lots.Where modern convenience supersedes "roughing it"
I'm sure it's changed a ton!
So are there septic tanks? Or is all the waste just emptying into the ground
@@patticrompton4425Hi Patti, Not sure which tanks your reffering to, I didnt notice any rental- porta potties in this video. But sanitation can & is obviously a major health problem in a sprawling transient community of this extent. When Slab City area was a military base in the 1940's the military had large communal latrines with ample underground septic tanks for the solid effluent & waste and maybe some of these camper folks who are parked permanently near the underground tanks actually found the tanks & tapped into them for that purpose, if the tanks still exist. Any above ground tanks would be exclusively for water storage. Otherwise permanent residents likely dig their own and make an communal outhouse ,or use a perferated 50 gallon drum buried below their personal campsite or RV , or they simply dig a hole nearby their camp becoming a rent free cat box out in the desert .Some of the transient, yet well heeled snowbirds in Motorhomes may use their RV holding tanks for their seasonal stay, and drive somewhere to properly empty their waste tanks at a disposal station. But sadly many of those mobile snowbirds just drive out into the desert & dump their solid waste tanks directly on the ground. I live out near Death Valley NP & there used to be quite a few nice "free" camping areas that turned into significant seasonal communities over the years, Minus all the dead or broken liveaboard vehicles and recycled artistic efforts, Unfortunately those camping areas up here were all closed around 20 years ago or so, mainly because the Motorhome people would dump their solid waste tanks out in the open desert not far from their free camping community..Eventually both the National Park & BLM rangers patrolling those free camps & got a whiff of the outlying dumping areas citing the health problems and illegal dumping of trash and closed it all to any further free range camping. If you want to see a good documentry on this area check out: "Vice TV" series called "Abandoned" the episode is called "Wet Dreams"- California's water crises". which covers the interesting history and decatying enviroments of both Salton Sea & the Owens Dry lake. Again, i think its a good thing that homeless and less fortunate people have some place they can to go and live feeling as being a part of a community, Better than in existing on the cityy streets & sidewalks or under a freeway. You can see the health hazards created in any city, both in real life or on many videos posted about the homeless plight on RUclips.
@@westho7314 seen that documentary, it was very interesting. I was referring to septic tanks. And you ans my question on that. Thanks for all the info.
Salton Sea is a man made accident and needs to dry up and blow away (like much of California)
