  • Whether they're guilty pleasures or games that are "so bad they're good", almost every gamer has some games that they think are bad but still enjoy anyways. In this video I talk about why these types of games are so special to us as well as how they become to be.

As a disclaimer, Altered Beast and Daytona USA (Saturn) are the closest games I have to what I'd personally call "bad but I still enjoy". So, apologies if anybody loves them and is offended. I love them too!

Jersey Devil on the PS1. That game’s camera works against you and the controls are almost as bad but there was a demo of it that came with my PlayStation so I played it all the time. Just found out one of my professors (haven't taken a class with him yet) worked at SEGA and made the background art for Virtua Fighter, Daytona USA and Virtua Cop(arcades I believe). Can't wait to talk his ear off. Also, the game I think is bad that I enjoy? I can't think of it... I swear I was playing one that sucked but it made me laugh so much I couldn't put it down. Maybe one day I will remember. Another one could be Midnight Resistance... I don't think it is all that good but man that music keeps me going. Probably more games on NES than I could count.

Altered Beast doesn't belong on this list my friend. It was a good pack-in for the time and I'll tell you why. In 1989 Sega needed something to show off the Sega Genesis's capabilities, had simultaneous two player action, easy to play mechanics, and representative of their arcade roots. Altered Beast was not only drop dead gorgeous in '89 but it was a helluva lot of fun to play. The sound was also incredible for the time..."Power Up!"

No worries my friend! Hey we all experienced the Genesis in our own way. The reason I have such a strong feeling towards Altered Beast is it was the second game I saw and played on a Genesis in 1989. It was one of the reasons I chose the Sega Genesis over the TG-16 as my big Christmas gift. Now, it is true that Altered Beast hasn't aged well in comparison to some of the Genesis's other early titles but I believe it deserves a positive spot on the annals of gaming history.

Ah yes the original golden cartridge of Zelda for the Nintendo NES was a game I started playing as a kid and quickly thought 💭 it was trash.
There was plenty of hype for it, as a lot of my friends owned the game and swore it was amazing. Well I was used to Castlevania, Metroid, Super Mario, Contra, Double Dribble, Mike Tyson’s Punchout and Techmo Bowl. I had no time for Zelda? Ohh was I wrong many of years later when I sat down and gave the game the respect it deserved. I was blown away by Golden Legend of Zelda now knowing what a timeless masterpiece it truly was. 🏆

House of The Dead on Sega Saturn is still good. Purists can't keep comparing the Saturn to the arcade versions because Saturn isn't anywhere near as powerful. Virtua Fighter 2 did well because it was a simple game that didn't have to worry about draw distance. You just have 2 3D models going at it per match and even the backgrounds are still images that move with the camera. The arena is at least in 3D allowing you to strafe around the opponent. Something like Daytona on the other hand for as early as it came out is impressive as heck despite lack of good draw distance. It's not so bad that you can't play it like some critics say. It's just not as pretty as the arcade. Same goes for Genesis ports of arcade games. I don't care if Space Harrier 2 has a choppy framerate. That game is so much better than Space Harrier on the Master System. FIGHT ME. lol Even games like Golden Axe are better on Genesis than the arcade because they actually added an extra level, boss, and a VS mode. Altered Beast has smaller sprites, but it plays better than the arcade. Super Thunder Blade is good too. Even After Burner 2. Understand the console's limitations and how cool it was back in the day to just have these games at home and to be able to play them any time you wanted. They still hold up. They aren't bad.

Buuuut I think the gameplay can be fun once you get used to the controls! I also think the super low-poly graphics and stiff animations are really charming with the simple, cartoonish character designs. Plus that soundtrack 👌 It’s pretty divisive, but I find it amazingly campy lol

I don't have many examples, because if I like a game I tend to consider it good, no matter what. But in the last few months I played Hunt for Red October on NES, which I think is objectively bad in many ways: terrible and extremely repetitive music, average or below average graphics, slow gameplay (because you're underwater). But I still felt the need to give it a chance, and enjoyed it quite a bit. I did beat the first three levels, it was a good challenge, but the idea of hearing that music and those horrible sound effects again keeps me from trying to conquer the next levels.

Two come to mind. One is Friday the 13th for the NES. It really isn't a very good game, but there's something I find fascinating about playing a game and feeling doomed the whole time. Jason is going to find you, and you're probably not going to escape. The other is Turok: Evolution for Gamecube. Not really a very good game, but my cousin and I got endless entertainment out of playing basically one multiplayer stage in a highly eccentric and specific way, charging our melee weapons up and rushing each other to see who could land a killing blow first.

I have several. Space Pirates and some other 3DO FMV games spring to mind. Game play is messy, the acting is goofy, and often the intended story gets trampled by mechanics that don't allow you to actually watch.
Cybermorph and Battlmorph on Jaguar and Jaguar CD also fit easily. Slow and clumsy, but there's something about the weird atmosphere that I like anyway. Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon and Link: Faces of Evil on CD-i are games I legitimately and unironically enjoy as well. The game play is rough, but they remind me of when I was a kid, and Zelda wasn't so rigidly defined. They have the feel of the old Valiant Nintendo Comics System and the Zelda episodes of the Super Mario Bros Super Show.
In fact, I could go on for hours on this topic...
