That's the thing about nostalgia. I was fortunate enough to have a pretty great childhood, so I most often look back to it as my idealized time. But then I realize that not everyone had the same experience, and in fact some are happy to break free from their past and never look back. I suppose not having that safe space of the distant past to retreat to could be considered both tragic but yet it could also provide an individual with the perk of moving forward unburdened by the same chains of nostalgia.

Hang on to your childhood as long as you possibly can. People may look down on folks who play video games as an adult but those people very likely aren't happy. The key to life is happiness. I know many people who from the outside looking in seem far better off, fancy pool in the back yard, nice cars big house. But they aren't happy. I don't think I miss being a kid as much as I miss the era of society in the late 80's early 90's. I have been pondering this for awhile lately and think although some luxuries we take for granted now we use everyday (such as the internet) would be missing, I feel the social interactions and how we function was much better.
Give me riding my boke till the street lights come on and going to a video store over Netflix any day

    • @tonyp9313
      @tonyp9313 3 месяца назад

Ah yes. Netflix isn't the only streaming service we got tons now. Even if you don't like streaming services you can buy blu rays of movie & tv shows. Also you have to remember cable & VCR's were barely a thing until the 90's. Also t.v watching your shows you may have had a black & white t.v & then a colored t.v...
A lot of us didn't have cable so channels would be a snowy receptions. Then no DVR existed so you either had to watch your tv shows live when they aired or tape them on your VCR with those 6-8 hours SLP mode tapes.
Now lets say you want to watch Star Trek The Next Generation, on blu ray with clarity & they have a lot more content on them. It's very cheap to buy also.

I grew up in the 80's & 90's. I really miss hanging with friends playing video games together, biking. sports such as street hockey & ice hockey & video game & movie rental store along with arcades. I know they still have arcades now but there was a whole lot more of them in the 80's & 90's. It's just mostly the socializing I miss.
As far as being an adult now in 2024 & onward I love my life a whole lot better than when I was a kid. I love the fact that I can drive an SUV & that it has amazing features like apple car play to basically go anywhere & not be lost. I love the fact now that I am making a lot of money just working a 30 hour a week schedule. I love the fact that I can play any video game I want with Emulators & that I bought a small collection of physical video games. Technology such as my cell & pc. For movies & tv shows I buy blu rays & watch them etc.
As a kid school was something I really hated. I was picked on, bullied, sexually & physically abused. Those were more of my high school years more than anything. 5 years as a teenager feels like 20. You talked about homework. Yeah I had that throughout elementary school & high school.
Yeah I did have some great experiences in school like my high school friends who some are still my friends till this day but there was also the negative too. School is 30 hours a week & for what? You learn useless things that don't matter in your every day life, homework everyday then you got to pass exams to get a high school diploma. Now I don't worry about those things.

I work as a taxi driver and I often take my Switch with me to kill the time in between rides, so that’s a great having-fun-while-taking-care-of-responsibilities-combo😊

You make some good points for both sides.
There were plenty of good things about when I was a kid (this was in the '90s), as well as some bad, but it's not something I think about too much.
Ultimately, we're in the time and age that we're in, and we might as well make the best of it from now on: play some games, eat some 'nanners, and be excellent to each other!

The only thing I really miss about being a kid are the adult curated events we got taken on. If I want to go to the beach, a theme park, a fancy restaurant, or cook a crazy experimental mean I’m the one who has to organize that now when it use to be my parents. I have less free time, but the games that require huge time commitments don’t appeal to me as much as they used to. I play a couple hours of an rpg here and there with my wife and then enjoy shorter experiences when she’s at work or doing her own thing.

Found your channel this year from a recommendation and subbed bc it was funny. This video is spot on. I'm 35 on my day off still talking with coworkers over text about work stuff that needs to be done, just finishing 2 loads of laundry, making lunch and taking our small family of 3 out for dinner ($50 for a pizza and a single soda!), taking the dog for a walk (with 3 poop bags in case), and going through all my unread emails that will pile up again by the end of tomorrow while trying to convince myself to sit down and just enjoy a game. I sit down for a bit and look at my giant catalogue of games organizing them in the arrangement I'd like to play them most before analysis paralysis sets in and there's too many games I want to play and then feeling guilty about all the games I played a ton of but didn't even finish (180 hours in Tears of the Kingdom, 36 hours in Hollow Knight, untold hours in Skyrim). So I boot up a game eventually and play for 45 minutes while distracted and then end up buying more games to not play while feeling shameful for taking the time to try to relax.

I definitely still have an issue with finding time to relax, I always have that niggling thought on the back of my mind about things I have to do.

I never ever ask people what they do for work when I meet them... instead, I ask what they do for fun. I couldn't care less about their job... I'm far more interested in what interests they have. :-) Not to mention, work is the last thing I want to talk about in my free time, so I assume others may be somewhat the same about it. heh

I miss playing RPG's. I just don't have the time for those anymore. I can make some time for a shmup pretty regularly, but those are usually a half hour or so, and you can just jump in and enjoy it. RPG's can be difficult. You save a game and life happens for a couple weeks and when you finally have the time to sit down you've forgotten what you were doing. By the time you figure out where you were going and what you were doing your'e out of time. I had to give up even trying.

I really appreciate how silly and optimistic you are about retro gaming, and it helped me realize that the 80s and 90s were the happiest time for me as a gamer, and so I went out and bought a small CRT, an SNES, a Super Gameboy, and some games to play.

My childhood was like a dream. My parents were still married until I was 12, I had an older sister and a younger brother, we lived in a quiet neighborhood near a grade school that had an awesome playground, and there were at least 5 other boys around my age right there across the street or around the block. I was 7 or so when the NES came to the neighborhood. I still remember each house where I first played Super Mario Bros, SMB2, SMB3, etc. One of my friends even had an in-ground pool in his backyard, not common in Oregon.
I was home schooled, so I didn't have to get up early or leave the house if I didn't want to, and I could pretty much study things in any order on my schedule. Those were glorious days. Playing in the back yard with action figures, climbing trees, digging in the dirt, making little rivers with water from the hose. It just didn't last long enough, and I was still doing that stuff at 15. My brother and I had so much fun together.

I do and don't miss being a kid. I do miss being a kid as I got to spend a lot of time with good friends and the feeling of video games in general was quite exciting (it easy to get jaded with gaming as an adult). Not to mention, having a lot of time to play said games as a kid. I don't miss going to school as a kid or having a lack of freedom when living at home with parents.
Adulthood is hit and miss, too. Having a job, you can afford any game you want, but the downside is not having the time to play them as you're working 40 hours a week or you have to catch up on the weekend with chores and errands. Another downside to adulthood is your social circle begins to shrink and sometimes you just are too tired to enjoy what you used to enjoy. I will say the big plus of adulthood is when you are able to invite other gamer friends over to hang out and play games all afternoon/night! That is always incredibly fun!

I live my life as if my childhood never ended. I still have a bunch of old consoles that I loved as a kid and even ones that I wanted but couldn’t afford *cough * Neo Geo. I’ve amassed a huge library of retro games on a dedicated pc just for emulation and got it connected to an old CRT to keep that feeling of old school gaming alive. But the one thing I miss as a kid that cannot be replicated was the fun I used to have with my best friends and my younger brother (who I sadly don’t communicate with often anymore). I miss hanging out in the living room and talking smack while playing Mario kart or staying up all night trying to get as far as we could in phantasy star online for GC. Moments like that are long gone but never forgotten as they were memories I truly cherish. I smile, but almost simultaneously shed tears when I think about it.

I miss having my mind blown by video games as a kid, but as an adult, I like that I appreciate more kinds of games now. I try my darndest to go in blind with games and minimal outside opinions, and it helps keep that sense of wonder alive. Amazing how many more games you’ll enjoy when you stop letting others condition your expectations.

What I miss about being a kid, is the ability to have happiness instantly. Where as a kid, there were numerous things that instantly brought me happiness. From Quality Television in numerous forms, for my kid self. Whether it's the best edutainment on PBS, Saturday Morning or After School Cartoons, or decent programming on Cable TV, like Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network. Playing outside with friends, especially in the country side, where a majority of my childhood was spent. Going out to favorite places like Chuck E. Cheese's, for Birthdays, or Video Stores like Blockbuster, for Movie Nights. And of course, playing Video Games, like Nintendo. And as a Late Millennial myself, from 1996, all of that happiness came, at the cost of my dedicated parents, whose policies, while strict, looking back, actually benefited me in the long run. Like how they didn't allow me access to the Internet. Such a shame how the cost of having happiness now comes at a heavy price, as an adult. Like Gas prices being raised more than a Dollar.

Biggest thing I miss was the world felt freer and willing to take risks, follow dreams, and create mistakes. Which I don't think is a coincidence that it led to the greatest 20 years of gaming in my opinion. I don't know if the world has just been hit with too much tragedy, or what, with Japan' economy tanking, and ours being what it is to survive. It feels like the greatest winners, corporations, are the most afraid to take risks, and it's understandable, but the world feels like it's slowing down.

I said this in the poll earlier this week, but I'll reiterate it here. Adulthood is underrated. My childhood was good, but I had a good deal of restrictions that bummed me out more often than not (not to say parents shouldn't set boundaries at all of course). As an adult, I like my job more than school, the things I enjoy still hold a sense of wonder to them, I can make my own decisions on things I couldn't before, I have more disposable income, I even feel like I have more free time. Plus, I don't need to spend endless time having fun, balancing it out with productivity keeps it feeling fresh. Childhood is good, but adulthood can be great too.

For all the things that may have been more fun back then, my relationship with videogames is better now than when I was a kid. Back then, I'd have no control over when I received new games, and I'd obsess myself with garbage like Boogerman and Johnny Bazookatone. Now, when I buy a game, it comes with the knowledge and experience that means it'll probably be something good. And my dad isn't coming in to show irritation or concern if I spend more than an hour on one. That said, it's definitely less wondrous now. I don't have my mind blown like I did when I first played a Super FX game, or the giddy thrill of playing something I probably shouldn't, like Mortal Kombat II or Grand Theft Auto. I give Breath of the Wild a lot of credit because it made me as excited about the experience of playing a new game as I did when I was 8. Something that offered possibilities beyond my expectations.

I was playing ps3\4 on a big screen rear projection tv somebody gave me in a house I recently bought, well got a mortgage for, with my awesome wife, young child and new baby. Now I got an even bigger new tv, a nice pc and a cool handheld emulator.
When I was a kid, I had to play Nes on a small black and white tv most the time.

As a kid you could get a great game from the local game store, you rush home to plug it in and actually have TIME to finish it. It sucks starting a game now, life happens, then 2 weeks later you cant remember WHAT you needed to do or where to go in the game. :)
