Nathan sounding great on all pieces. I loved your sound especially on the HR* and DV. Hard not to play the DV once you have it. Will have to send you the Burnin’ as I think you’ll dig it. Thanks for the shoutout too!
Of course man! Thank YOU!
@@Saxologic And the Giant jody jazz? . I want to know whether Giant is a good mouthpiece or Hr is "better"
@@rom-ci it seems to me that the giant model is only for tenor
Yeah that DV sounds great!!
This is easily the best comparison vid of these mouthpieces on the internet. You should do one with the tenor pieces next!
Thanks man! I’d be down
I have to agree
When I saw the notification for this video I figured it was only (saxo) logical to click.
Well played
True fans click on the notification
They all sound good. No audience member would ever be able to do a blindfold test, probably no sax player either. it is all about how it feels to me. The free-blowing and the access to altissimo notes as well as bottom is what does it for me. I can find tenor mouthpieces easily, not so for alto or soprano.
It took me forever to find the right mouthpieces on Alto and Tenor! Been through far fewer changes on Soprano and Alto. In fact, I still have my Rovner Deep V #6 I bought new in 1999 for my Soprano! I did add the Theo Wanne Series 1 Gaia in 2016 though. But the Deep V is never leaving!
I'm in the mood for love - Charlie Parker!! I love that solo, it was actually your transcription video that got me into that tune!
i come and watch these videos knowing that i won’t be able to afford one of those mouthpieces or be able to use them to their potential for years, so i just come to listen to you play. your tone and intonation and just everything about your playing is beautiful and it inspires me to go practice every time i listen
You are a kind man!!!!
clicked for the mpcs, stayed for the iconic knife edit
I love the sound of the Jet... I have a Jet 7 on tenor and bari and love them both.
Y’all don’t know how happy I was when I saw the knife action man I thought it was gonna be over
I played on a Jody jazz DV mouthpiece for a lonnnng time. They’re great! Definitely fairly priced for what you get. Especially when compared to Theo Wanne which I think is usually wayyy too expensive.
Totally agree!
The jet seems like it would be a great lead alto mouthpiece!
You can see his face of approval after playing the DV.
Saxologic pulls out the knife:
Aw shit, here we go again.
Ayyyyy you brought back the knife edits!
I play a Jody jazz jet for my alto and I love it because it's so easy to play in the altissimo range while still getting the bottom notes clear
Can always count on a Jody Jazz HR. Excited for this video man!
Greatest transitions ever!
I really appreciate that you play the same excerpts when comparing equipment. Some reviewers just trot out their blues cliches and altissimo notes, which don’t reveal any useful audio information. IMO you sounded best on your Meyer and on the HR Dark. Great review!
I have a Jet and HR* for alto and I love the easy blowing character of the mouthpieces. They simply speak better than many other mouthpieces. The HR* nicely bridges the classic and modern sound for me.
When I listened to your performances, you sounded at home with the Meyer, then next was the custom dark HR
I have had a lot of trouble with mouthpieces and moved from selmer to Theo wanne and now I play Jody jazz and they are incredible! I play the hr* and it is awesome!
They had very distinct sounds for me: and really added something to your playing. Very impressed!
I’ve been playing the DV for 9 years now and never looked back! I did pick up a syos just to see what the fuss was about but it’s nothing like the DV which has the best of all worlds, nice roundness on bottom and great clarity in the top end.
I liked the Custom Dark and the DV NY the best, and your faces at the end of each song 😁
Sounds so good on all!
JodyJazz JET sounded like a beast :o I think that one was my personal favorite
You are my favorite
4:09 I’m in the Mood for Love, I’ve transcribed this solo! I love the lines in it.
+5000 pt for you, I guess
Awesome demonstration! I’m a big Jody Jazz fan! Went on the DV for tenor for a while, then switched to the Jet 5 for alto, and I was also appalled by the sheer power of the Jet! Awesome work Nathan! :DDD
Thanks man! And yeah for real, that thing is a literal jet
Love my DV CHI on tenor. Definitely check it out.
You sound best on the DV in my opinion.
The Jody Jazz DV NY litterly made me c••• every time you played it, even with a closed eyes comparison. 100% the best saxsound I heard everrrrr :)
😂😂😂😂
When I upgraded from my stock tenor mouthpiece a few years ago, I managed to find an absolute steal on an HR* size 7 tip for $70 as a clearance deal at my local music store. Safe to say that I'm very happy with a find like that as someone who loves a warmer sound.
I don't know why, but I always laugh when you're opening a box with a knife and pretend to go mad. And then say, "Okay okay".
Always great to have a new video!
Thank you sir Osborne
@@Saxologic I rlly missed the unboxing scenes (knife PTSD) 🥰.
What's tricky about mouthpiece testing, is that the reed REALLY matters! Mouthpieces that I absolutely hated sounded better when I changed reed brands, filed, unfiled, strength, etc.
yeah man, the reed is OP
I’m sure if he had the right reed for every mouthpiece in this video, he would struggle more and more to pick a favorite. Sometimes it’s best to let the reed pick the mouthpiece so that you don’t have to go around searching for the right reed. Sometimes it’s the opposite.
The effect used for the knife was great, enjoyed the laugh. Really good mouthpiece review!
I use an HR and they’re really good mouthpieces! It’s lasted me multiple years and it tastes goo- I mean it plays with a really nice bright sound!
charlie parker - in the mood for love
I like these mouthpieces
I just bought the HR* because it had that beautiful warm sound that I was looking for. If you ask me, it’s probably the best hard rubber alto saxophone mouthpiece on the market.
Man o man how I would love to try a box out like that! Awesome vid!
That custom dark mouthpiece 👌
Then again, I'm a euphonium player, so of course that's my favorite
I like the HR most...Thanks great video!
I've been playing on a jody jazz HR 6* for about 6 months although only play sax for a year but it definently is my favorite mouthpiece
hi!what reeds are you use to your jody jazz hr 6*.thankyou
It’s funny that you say that the DV might have sounded the worst, but honestly from what I am hearing, that sounded the most freest of all the mouthpieces you played in this video. The microphone doesn’t lie. You could hear that things felt easier on that piece by far. DV NY also sound great, with a subtle darker sound to it. Jet was the brightest of them all. I agree that the HR* was a cleaner Meyer. HR custom dark was ok for breathier sound. Aside from the pieces, your playing was absolutely awesome! As we Minnesotans like to say, “Uff da!!” :)
I could definitely tell that you felt more comfortable playing with the DV mouthpiece :)
I’m a huge fan of the Jet on my alto.
I have the DV, I love it
3:50 IM IN THE MOOD FOR LOVEEEEE
I definitely want to try the JodyJazz HR or the Jet if I can, I played for a good amount of time on the JodyJazz SuperJet on Alto which I love but I feel like it's good in playing where it asks for power, kinda like the DV like you mentioned. Loved your playtesting.
Thanks
I love the smile 😁🤪
Like the "Paul Desmond" sound on the Custom Dark.... But the HR* is also nice.
I have the Hr for both alto and tenor and really like them
the ending of each test made me laugh every time
I have jodyjazz dv 7. Such an awesome mouthpiece.
Since I'm a Meyer player, I would gravitate to the HR * model which is their Meyer version.
I'm in the mood for love 😄
Lets go, new video. :D
The dv is incredible. I don't know that I've played a nicer mouthpiece for alto. They make one called the super jet that is out of this world bright and powerful. Lots of fun for brass band type gigs. It's worth checking out.
Should do a Theo Wanne shootout next! I own a few of those, and they stopped my mouthpiece search! (Early Westcoast Sax models actually: Mofo1 on tenor, MOAM on Alto. Gaia series 1 on Soprano. Ivan Meyer custom contemporary on bari-that last one is made is Brazil. Super pieces!)
I've been looking for a new jazz mp for both alto and tenor, I'll definitely check these out! I think I'll like the jet based on what you said!
I don't play saxophone, I play trumpet but I find your videos very interesting!
I’d tried all three DVs for tenor and an HR for alto. JJs aren’t quite for me. I thought that the HR was as resistant a piece as I’ve ever played. I really liked the DV which was a bit bright and thin for me personally, and I thought the Chicago was their best. Ultimately I decided against them. Obviously, mouthpiece choice is a very personal thing, and the same piece can sound very different between two different players and horns.
every time i watch your vids you make me alto jealous ,i can't wait to get my saxophone :)
Oooh you’re getting a new saxophone?
@@Saxologic nope im just starting and your vids help alot even if i dont have my sax yet
The jet is like the blue Vandoren jumbo java
I feel as though Jodi Jazz has more of a buzzing sound which I enjoy a lot.
Superjet is the best one
i play the hr* in an 8 size on bari and altissimo doesnt really get any easier with any reed you use, you just have to move your math around till it works, the high g is the weirdest change to play by far. but the over blowing altissimo notes are pretty easy on it
I swear by these mouthpieces. So good!
It’s most def a flex when your WHOLE saxophone AND mouthpiece are 24kt plated.
And ligature...
Kindly do a give away for your old mouthpieces. Will be needing them
Meyer NY 6M is earned
Love the knife part , never gets old 😂😂😂
Great video. I think the JET and DV had a really good sound, to me it sounded like a clearer sound. The Custom HR I can see me liking it since I love the idea of sitting in a corner a gig and playing soulful music.... if I was going to spend the $.......... I think I would go for the DV which would be a perfect partner to my Meyer 6m.
Oh man you would love the DV. The metal mouthpieces are something I can see myself really getting into in the new future.
12:03 - This is why we play saxophone right here
wow, epic
Meyer👍✨
"In The Mood For Love" By Bird if I'm not mistaken!
In the mood for love Charlie Parker 😩
Honestly for the bebop stuff that you love playing i think the HR custom dark sounded the closest to the desired Bird-like character. Also, you seemed to really "sing" the phrases with it. If you played more fusiony or modern stuff, you could go with the NY or DV.
my choice fell to DV
This was a great demonstration. I'd love to give the HR+ or a HR Custom Dark a try on my sop. As things stand for me $$-wise, though, I'll have to put such things off for now.
i currently use the custom dark on my alto, it has an amazing sound and feel to it. It’s very rich in sound in the higher register and has a smoky sound in the lower register. at first altissimo was slightly harder to play consistently, but that was most likely because i hadn’t gotten used to the mouthpiece yet
solid 9/10, definitely get one when you have a chance
I'm so glad the knife vids are back😭😈 Great video Nate. I kinda need a new mouthpiece, so I meannnn...🤷♀️💅
Getting rid of the knife scenes were a mistake. The love is just too strong.
& I think you’d like these!
"Over a decade" 😂. You rock, BTW, but that opening statement was funny 🖖
The DV is not my choice, the rest definitely are!!!
I'm more west coast fan dry martini sound
I'm hanged making a purchase choice Jody custom dark or Morgan dry martini !
I'm never gonna forget the time my mouthpiece got stuck in my saxophone ans my band director shamed me for it.
Since then I think any mouthpiece is good as long as it plays well.
Jody jazz dv best
Dv NY✌️
Yessir
cool
On a side note, I've played with Derek Brown and he is insanely amazing
Just curious. I subscribed, but I haven't been receiving any of your videos. Good to see you!!
Strange. Have you tried hitting the bell notification?
I use jody jazz jet 5
Ive just subscribed to your channel having followed Zak for a while and have immediately reached the conclusion that you are as mad as your brother! lol
Both fabulous musicians though :-))
You’ve got to try out a MACSAX mouthpiece, excellent mouthpieces made in Austin Texas. They tend to be on the bright side, although they do have a classical selection. I play a Rattler 9* w/ Legere signature 3.5 on my Bari and it is the best mouthpiece I’ve ever played.
Ooh sounds interesting. I want to try out every mouthpiece in the universe
@@Saxologic That's what she said
I actually preferred the Meyer NY 6M. Sorry Jody Jazz. The metal Jody Jazz pieces seemed to play louder and the banded rubber Jody Jazz Dark piece did seem to be the darkest.
You should definitely check out some Theo Wanne mouthpieces if you're ever looking for some punch
I love it when you do crazy shit for giggles
Played for some years on JJ Jet 6, and really Love it, but it's too bright for many music situations (even cover band)
For now i'm playing on hr*6, and whis piece is ultimate universal thing.
Maybe a little too bright on hights, but still it's BEST piece i ever played on alto.
