The way I understand dark vs bright is by thinking about how I would sing a certain song. One of my favorite classical pieces is Fugue in G minor, if I were to sing this to someone I would use a “bom” to represent the soft round darker tone of classical saxophone. If I were singing what Jay was playing at the end of the video I would probably use a combination of “da” and “ba” to give the impression of the hard sharp brighter sound.
Well, as he says, his Alto sound is rather bright, naturally. You might achieve a similar sound with different equipment. Make sure to take enough time to listen to yourself with each mp. Play in different rooms, and record yourself. (Ideally with a mic, but even your phone can give you a bit of an "outside perspective.")
I just went through a trial of my own a few months ago with the Jody Jazz DV, HR* and Jet mouthpieces when I decided to get a more open version of the HR* I already owned. When I called for the mouthpiece trial, I was surprised to have Jody pick up the phone and talk with me about his mouthpieces. I wasn't going to try the DV because of the high price, but he convinced me that I had nothing to lose in giving it a try. I'm really glad I did, because that mouthpiece is fantastic and the one I decided to keep, easy blowing and seems to work with just about every reed I throw onto it. Stimulus money and birthday gift to myself. All the Jody Jazz mouthpieces were great, consistent like Jay says, just need to pick the one that suits your needs..
Thanks so much for sharing your story - I’m really glad you are happy. I always say if you can afford a DV, there’s nothing to lose in giving it a try and if you can’t afford it we have great options for under $200
This is incredibly thorough and helpful (I’ve never previously fully understood the Jody Jazz lineup). Your engineering and playing skills make this VERY illuminating. Bravo, Jay!
I bought the ruby red for soprano some 17 years ago and I am a die hard fan of Jody Jazz. I have already bought an HR* for my soprano. I would like a DV but it's a bit out of my budget for now. I have been suggesting Jody Jazz to anyone who would listen for years now. I love mine.
I bought the DV 5-6 years ago and it’s still my primary mouthpiece! I’ve never really noticed how versatile it is but I can get my sound to go from Sanborn to Albright to Cannonball all on the same piece
Have you heard anything about baffles,ie I used to have a water proof putty similar to blutac, place different shapes below the reed, press, in place, experiment freely
My phone's a piece of crap(like my Alto mouthpiece) and it won't accept PDFs for some reason. I'm upgrading soon. I can't wait. Yourself and Chad and Pollock. Im so glad I found all of you. Thanks.
Yes, the DV is worth the money. I generally play in a sextet where each member can swing. I must say that after playing for almost 70 years now I depend upon the set-up more than ever before. At 79 years of age my playing has eroded giving way to shaking hands, poor air supply, and extreme fatigue. Bestg regards, Richard "Duke" Blakley
The contest is supercool because in order to make points you have to visit Instagram accounts, websites and Facebook pages that actually are quite interesting. By the way, if you are having problems with your details (you cannot click Continue button at the bottom even if you have put your info) you need to reset the form (It´s an option once you click right mouse button over the form) It happened to me.
thank you for your lesson. I bought the Jody Jazz HR last year and i am so happy. I joined a bigband with my classical equipment and a Rascher mouthpiece and it was just frustrating.I felt in love with the Jody Jazz HR, because of your arguments: you have a wide tone range, you are very flexible, can even play soft jazz or classical music and the high notes are no desaster any more..........Thumbs up 👍
I’m a beginner alto sax player still learning have been watching your videos for a few weeks now and they’ve helped me out a lot. I liked the one that was right in the middle...sounded the most versatile. I believe it’s the DV.
I have Jody Jazz for both my Tenor and Alto sax. Ive tried all of them so far. I personally love the DV 7 for Tenor and Super Jet for Alto. The Jet mouthpiece was the only mouthpiece that I gave away. I think it had a defect.
I love jody jazz for all the different tones build quality. Been playing for a couple of yrs now time for me to try a different mouthpiece. My kids bought me a jody jazz power ring for fathers day. Which would fit and my favourite super jet if I win or have to buy one . Keep the great work up love better sax .
i love this channel played nearly all my school years on sax mostly bari saxiphone and allows me some nostalga as it hard to find a bari sax thats affordable in my area
Thank you Jay. This video has really helped me figure out which mouthpieces to try out for my playing and budget. The winner for me was the Jet. It was brighter than i'm used to but with the dark ligature it's a great combination. Changed my whole sound and ease of getting low notes and altissimo notes! Great video and you play your tail off!!!
I know the video is about the mouthpieces, which are amazing by the way. but man, you're a hell of a sax player. bet you hear that a lot but congratulations for all the work and study put in, it paid out!! huge fan
Jay...I like the DV and the Jet 7 for big band and small group setting. Would like to win any of these! Love your Channel, wish I would have had this when I was beginning my study in the 70’s.
I've been using the rico B5 for 3 years now and know I should probably upgrade but times have been tough... but I'm not only in love with the DV NYs ascetics but as soon as you started playing it reminded me of my grandpops because of the same rich deep tone he always played in. 🙌🏾🧡💥
"Spend time with a new mouthpiece because first impressions can be deceiving" - That is an absolute gem of wisdom! Totally agree. I've stopped buying mouthpieces and reeds online because the supplier I use (Saxtienda.com in Madrid) have a soundproof booth you can practice in as long as you like and they will let you play on any number of mouthpieces which they then disinfect professionally. They even have a complete suite of Légère plastic reeds to try out. I've spent endless hours in there checking one piece against another and I've never come away disappointed, unlike when I've bought things untested online. (NB - this was pre-Covid, I have no idea what they do now but I suspect this service will be suspended until Covid is over) It's also true that there's a surprising diversity between different mouthpieces of the same model, I've tried different Selmer Soloist and Concept models which perform quite differently. Surprisingly, possibly my favourite mouthpiece is a humble old Otto Link Tone Edge 7* that I picked up second hand when I bought an old Keilwerth EX90 II Tenor for gigging with years ago. It's easily the most fun to play of my collection, and you can get really creative with it, although it's definitely Jazz-leaning and doesn't do pianissimo very well. It kind of reminds me of the Jody Jazz Jet 7 tip in this video. I hate to admit this because I've spent tons of money on metal mouthpieces that really look the part, my old Tone Edge is faded and kind of khaki coloured, but I've really grown into it and it's a joy to play!
I use a Jody jazz DV NY and matching ligature for that mouthpiece I love it , I don’t use anything else , I found it hard to come by here in the uk 🇬🇧 and omg it was expensive
Hello Jay, A few years ago, I tried (at my cost) the Jet, and the DV New York. I returned both pf them. I realized that you have to be ready to play them. I think that you are doing great with all of them but the Super Jet sounds great. If I win, the DV new york, Great video Jay, keep up the good work.
Love the channel Jay. Been self-taught for a month now, and its all thanks to you. Got my Jean Paul AS-400 a few weeks back thanks to your recommendation, and its been a blast. I actually love riding my electric skateboard at the park while practicing my saxophone. Going to be looking to upgrade my mouthpiece soon, keep these mouthpiece videos coming, I'm still not sure of what I should get.
Hi.on my journey ' of saxo.mouthpiece's, lessons. One are jody jazz.cost are super.heavy weights. Sound so great.cost are top to the sky.moneys are good for nothing. Jody jazz .mouthpiece 's , are angels gifts 🎁
Four years ago I started playing tenor again (after many years not playing since high school) and, about 6 months into it, was looking for some mouthpieces. I purchased the Selmer Soloist C* which I play in HS for band concerts, but had to "guess" at what to get for a jazz mouthpiece. I ended up purchasing the Jody Jazz HR* 5 (I play Java Green 2.5 reeds on it) and the Jet 6 (I play Vandoren Jazz 2.5 on it) based on Jody Jazz's recommendations. I love them -- and I guess I got lucky! And they perform pretty much like you advertise!
Dear Jay, your sound on HR* is absolutely wonderful. I already play a HR* on alto with a small tip opening. I'd like to try a 7*. I still play it on tenor as you all might se from my image 😆
Also it’s not bright all the time I prefer my lower notes to have a darker fuzz to them and that’s still possible while having a bright mid and high range
I bought the Custom Dark HR* in an 8 opening back in February. Boy is it a fantastic dark mouthpiece. Easily the best mouthpiece ( to me anyway) that I have ever owned. It is wayyyy better than anything else I’ve ever owned. Much better than the regular HR* that I had, much better than the new Links. I play it with Rigotti Gold 2.5 Medium and also D’Addario Select Jazz 2H. Love it with my P.Mauriat PMXT-66RUL I guess the DV projects more so that is the alternative for me, if I was to change or add a new one.
This vid is probably theost helpful since I have no idea how to characterize the "dark" and "bright" timbre.
The way I understand dark vs bright is by thinking about how I would sing a certain song. I’m Japanese college student studying jazz.
I learned a lot from this video.
Thank you so much!!!
You are a very sensitive and emotional professional that has stayed very humble, and that is extremely rare! May GD bless you! Love your channel!
I love the darker ones but they are all beautiful sounding. I’m an intermediate sax player and this is exactly what I need!
The HR* sounded great! It's perfect for bebop or lead alto. Absolutely has that
New York Meyer vibe, such a perfect alto tone.
I really love the Super Jet mouthpiece.
I just went through a trial of my own a few months ago with the Jody Jazz DV, HR* and Jet mouthpieces when I decided to get a more open version of the HR* I already owned. Finally! a video which properly demonstrates the differences between bright and dark tones on saxophone.
Been playing professionally over 45 years and am a huge fan of the Super Jet Series! Play them on all my horns ...
I love the sound of the DV, best. It sounds like the most versatile of the five Jody Jazz mouthpieces. Thanks Jay.
All music sounds brilliant when you play.
Oh man that HR* is so smooth
This is incredibly thorough and helpful (I’ve never previously fully understood the Jody Jazz lineup). Your engineering and playing skills make this VERY illuminating. Bravo, Jay!

The HR* was definitely my favorite
I really love the sound of a DV, it sounds so clear and tuned whatever on lower or upper registers.
I loved the tone and sound of the Jet mouthpiece
Have you heard anything about baffles,ie I used to have a water proof putty similar to blutac, place different shapes below the reed, press, in place, experiment freely

Got my DV NY years ago & still love it. I’d like to try the HR*. All in 6. Thanks for your vids.
Got an HR* last year, and I absolutely love it!
His mouthpieces cost more than my entire Amazon alto saxophone 😂
Ouch lmao
Those mouthpieces cost more than my entire homestudio and musical equipment :( haha
The DV one is nearly the same price of my saxophone lol.
Same
@@Edgarromero94 Yes, it is overpriced, 10x more expensive compared to average price at Amazon. Only silly guy/student will buy it for practicing
I like jet and hr sounds great 👍🏻
I like the DV because it has a unique sound and it stands out from the rest
HR* & DV sounded really nice!
I’ve been playing a DV on alto and tenor for ~2 years. Simply the best mouthpiece I’ve ever played.
I think this is the best mouthpiece test video of the year... thank you🙏🏻🙏🏻
HR* sounds the most consistent. The extremes are great aswell but I like the sound from the HR*.
Wow the HR* sounds amazing

Jody Jazz Super Jet - For me, is the best mouthpiece of them all! Hope I can win it :D
They all sounded incredibly bright to me

Drooling over the SuperJet and that beautiful sound and look. Or the DV NY.
Another great video Jay!
Love bright tone more bright is good
I hit like because I like saxophone gear review videos and premium mouthpiece giveaways like this one.
The first one was superb
Thanks Jeff
I have Jody Jazz for both my Tenor and Alto sax. Ive tried all of them so far. I personally love the DV 7 for Tenor and Super Jet for Alto. The Jet mouthpiece was the only mouthpiece that I gave away. I think it had a defect.
It's a DV for me!
Believe a greatly discounted course on that day would be a wonderful way to celebrate!
I'd love the superjet!! I'm a rock'roll guy!
Yet another great giveaway. Thank you so much for your generosity, Jay. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
Jody Jet 7 is amazing , don t hesitate to try it , love it myself
I like how you labeled the different sections of the video!
I'm a fan of the Jet and Super Jet mouthpieces, great videos by the way Jay! Thank you!
I just ordered the Jet, thanks for the reviews.
I pray for winning the contest... Like so much the JET.
I love jody jazz for all the different tones build quality. Been playing for a couple of yrs now time for me to try a different mouthpiece. My kids bought me a jody jazz power ring for fathers day. Sounding damn fine there Jay.A mouthpiece would be nice, but how about you send be me a bag of your technique!
Superjet metal. I blow a Beechler Bellite 8 and I am in love with it. So loud it strips wallpaper and saves buying a mic. LoL
I reall love the sound of Super Jet mouthpiece ,but all of them are very great.
I know the video is about the mouthpieces, which are amazing by the way. but man, you're a hell of a sax player. bet you hear that a lot but congratulations for all the work and study put in, it paid out!! huge fan
I concur. You play your butt off!!!
I’ve always wanted to try a DV. Jody told me once that it should pair well with my Reference Alto.
I’m totally going to thumbs up this video when I get one in the mail
Every mouthpiece sounds amazing but the DV for me is the best!
Jay...I like the DV and the Jet 7 for big band and small group setting. Would like to win any of these! Love your Channel, wish I would have had this when I was beginning my study in the 70’s.
I have a DV and I love it
HR star for me
I would love the super jet mouthpiece
I've got the HR* alto piece and would love a DV to go with it, 7 tip opening. Drool.
I have the HR* and love it's verstility. The one that would suit me best is the DV. They all sound great.
My horn professor persuaded me to get a HR* when I was in college and I love it still! It would be great to win the DV, it sounds amazing!
I have been playing on the HR* for years and I would like to move up to the DV NY.
Pulled my alto out after a fair number of years and the mouthpiece is definitely pants. Any of these would be a major upgrade as I got back going.
I've been using the rico B5 for 3 years now and know I should probably upgrade but times have been tough... but I'm not only in love with the DV NYs ascetics but as soon as you started playing it reminded me of my grandpops because of the same rich deep tone he always played in. 🙌🏾🧡💥
I would like between the DV for its pop or Jody Jazz Jet for its gurgly warmth. Nice presentation of each mouth piece

Done!! I'd really love to have a dv original mouthpiece. And huge thanks for this opportunity..
I love the sound of DV and HR* i think it's good to play at higher note...
Mouthpiece videos are the best
U should do a Jody jazz soprano saxophone video
I use a Jody jazz DV NY and matching ligature for that mouthpiece I love it , I don’t use anything else , I found it hard to come by here in the uk 🇬🇧 and omg it was expensive
Hello Jay, A few years ago, I tried (at my cost) the Jet, and the DV New York. I returned both pf them. I realized that you have to be ready to play them. Thanks Jay, I bought the HR star for my Soprano.
The DV NY totally got me. What a great sound!
I'm looking for a new mouthpiece for marching band, the jet or super jet looks great for that.
super jet of course! Loud!!!
I love the Dark sound of Jody Jazz DV NY!
I 'd LOVE the HR* !! .... I reckon this will sound great on my Truetone Alto :)

Hi I would love the DV in 7 tip opening,it seems ideal for the mixture of styles I play.
HR would be great.
You should do the same video with the soprano saxophone 🙏
Thanks immensely.
