Wait wait, hold up. You mean that keeping your tools in good condition helps them last longer? Wild... . I'm just making a joke, this was incredibly helpful. Thank you.
Yup I figured how to sharpen rasps maybe a year or so ago from an article in the AFJ. Sooo freaking handy and never calculated how much savings but that's crazy to see! You and I also have the same hoof pick! Wire brush is a must! We'd have a lot to talk about if we ever link up!
Also I never asked, but how long have you been at it? Seems like you've been at it for awhile! I've been at it since I was 14 but taking it seriously for 5 years now, I'm 24 now.
Ya I'm sure we could pick up a lot of tips from each other! I started shoeing at 18, but didn't go to shoeing school until 2013, so almost 11 years of being at it full time.
You could definitely try it, but in my experience it works best to start right away with a brand new rasp. I've heard of acid sharpening for files but I've never tried it myself.
That’s a nice shoeing barn setup!
Thanks! It is really nice when it is nasty cold or super hot. Do you shoe?
@@FarmsteadForge I don’t shoe, but grew up on a ranch and have several friends who are farriers, so I can recognize and appreciate the setup.
Nice tip Jayce. I will have to try that. Great savings over the year.
Ya it's nice to not be throwing money away on files!
For sure Jayce, Merry Christmas to you and the family.@@FarmsteadForge

Yes, who knew?? Ha ha. You're welcome!

I was not aware of this process. I wonder how well this would work on a de-rustified old rasp. Are there any good tricks for sharpening files?
