The problem with this song has always been the fact that it's too short. I wish ol' Waymore would have added a few more verses before he checked out. I can remember being 18 years old, riding around with my friend and "rewinding" this song over and over and screaming it to the top of our lungs. Classic.
My husband is a music man he’s only 28 but lord outlaw music is his kinda music. He’s turned me on to all the classics.. now we’re raising our babies on this kinda music.
This song is pure genius. It makes absolutely no sense, but it does at the same time. The way he strings the ideas together is pure madness. You keep listening and if you aren't paying close enough attention it'll fly right over your head.
Grumstrup12 I'm not too sure about that. When I read through the lyrics it doesn't have any singular train of thought. It's almost like he wanted to work on his technique in stringing ideas together in such a way that the very ideas he manipulates can be all over the place. Usually songs have a progressive storyline, in the basic sense, but this song has no singular 'train of thought'. This is what I think, anyway.
It's probably because the lyrics are lifted from disparate songs. Two verses come from "Keep it Clean" by Charley Jordan: If you want to go to heaven when you D-I-E... and the get the rabbit out the L-O-G... and then the line about having his name on his shirt seems to be repurposed from "Blue Yodel No. 9" by Jimmie Rodgers. Both of those songs were written before he was born. I wouldn't be surprised if you couldn't find the rest of the lyrics in another song. He basically pasted a bunch of songs together over a two chord pattern. I like his music. My band covers his songs (including this one) but I wouldn't call this pure genius.

He seems like a man. A normal man. Just talking with his wife. It feels like he is sitting right next to you. You can damn near smell the cigarettes on him. Just some guy. He's not talking to the audience or the interviewer. Just like a man and women sitting on a bed playing guitar and talking. This video is amazing. Well we still got DAC,,4 got em His old stuff is really good if you never listen to his first couple albums Memphis in my blood,, On My Feet Again Mona Lisa he's got quite a good collection of Outlaw albums,,
I saw Waylon in traffic in Chandler Az. In the month of July ( what the hell he was doing there I can’t imagine). I had a ‘77silverado with a 350, no air, so I had the windows down and Waylon up. I waved a black sedan through and the driver gave me a thumbs up, which I returned a confused look because I couldn’t have looked like much, at which he pointed at his face with both hands and smiled. I recognized him and gave him two thumbs up, to which he touched the brim of his hat and drove past. I had the chills for the rest of the day and I still get the chills when I think about it even in the height of summer; now folks that is cool... And if that story isn’t true, it sure ought to be.
Waylon lived in Tempe until his death,in his later years. Jesse still does,as does his son,Shooter. He's buried in the Tempe cemetery. Just caddy corner from the office building in the middle there. People years ago started a tradition regarding his gravestone. He did a song with the lyrics "I'm four quarters short of a dollar" and they began leaving four quarters on his stone plate. You pick up the set of quarters left, then replace them with your own. So he'll never be broke,in either world. I have my first set of quarters in a small leather box. I go out there sometimes, just to visit, but now I always take with me four quarters,..for Waylon.
I've watched hours upon hours of Waylon tapes, I own his albums I love his music, but for some reason I come back again and again to this video. The views speak for themselves clearly others do too. It's not his best song, it wasn't a big hit. And even here, he makes fun of himself and this song, saying "I don't know what it's about, really". But all of that together wrapped up and performed here is just so...perfect. Waylon Jennings dismissing this song and performance, meanwhile to me this is like watching Van Gogh talk about "Starry Night" A master at his easel.
Lights his smoke.... sticks it in the guitar .... drops a classic.... finishes his smoke... Waylon Jennings ladies and gentlemen

I love you, Willie. I was born in 1975. The first country music I ever heard was my dad singing "Hey Good Lookin' " , Roger Miller, then Willie. God Bless You

God, I love the faces he does!
OMG ‼️
My favorite part was the last sentence 😂 my Pawpaw used to saw that all the time... good memories
That’s cool
It looks like he actually died in chandler
Best version of my favorite Waylon song
In love with this video
I've watched hours upon hours of Waylon tapes, I own his albums I love his music, but for some reason I come back again and again to this video. The views speak for themselves clearly others do too. It's not his best song, it wasn't a big hit. And even here, he makes fun of himself and this song, saying "I don't know what it's about, really". But all of that together wrapped up and performed here is just so...perfect. Waylon Jennings dismissing this song and performance, meanwhile to me this is like watching Van Gogh talk about "Starry Night" A master at his easel.
This performance ALWAYS gives me chills
