NocturnalBass is only $89 until Jan 16th, so grab it while you can!
bit.ly/3TU48o2
I love the signature Stingray sound. That's why I play that bass too, by the way the SBMM Ray 34 is definitely not a bad choice, great bass.
Yeah the Ray34's are pretty killer!
Seeing Mike Herrera using one made me want to get one back when I was 14!
Great video, Aaron. Thanks for featuring Nocturnal as well - we're stoked with how that came out.
No problem Ermin! It's definitely one of my favourites you guys have put out so far!
I bought a sterling Ray 4 used recently. It’s an import version of the stingray, and it goes typically for 250-300 used, 350-400 new. I put new strings and gave it a setup, and it plays and sounds as good as basses twice the price - in fact I get more compliments on its sound than other basses. You don’t have to spend 2-3k on a real musicman.
100% this.
You can get a sterling SUB, cheap and has the sound of a stingray. Not saying as good, but a great option.
In my opinion, the Ray34 is a fantastic instrument and is more than good enough to record with. They're about $900 new, but you can frequently get them for $500-700 if you look around. So they're about the same price as an MIM P Bass and at least as well made, if not better.
For sure! I think I got mine for about £300 used, and it was basically in mint condition. So I got pretty lucky on that one, haha.
I don't have a Fender P-bass or a Stingray, but I do have a Squier PJ (with a Matt Freeman signature neck from his Squier P-bass swapped in) & a Sterling SubRay4, with all the stock pick ups replaced with Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound pickups. I'm pretty happy with both.
Neat ✌
Unmistakable. So is the 5 string/sterling(model not brand) with its ceramic magnet.
They certainly have their own very unique tone!
A few years ago I bought a brand new made in America Stingray 5 and had nothing but problems with it, the input jack straight up died within 24 hours, the wiring in the 18v preamp went bad within a week, and it wouldn't hold tuning. I sold that POS in less than 6 months. Worst purchase I've ever made.
I'm done playing any bass with more than 4 strings but has anyone had any issues with the SBMM basses? Seems like in my experience in the expensive American ones aren't worth the money but their little brothers work great.
I have a white Music Man StingRay that I got back in 2017 when I turned 18 mainly because of guys like Flea (the main reason I wanted one), John Deacon of Queen and Cliff Williams of AC/DC and it’s my favourite bass I have after my 2019 Rickenbacker 4003S that I got in the summer of 2021 (which is my main #1 with both playing at home and with my band but my Music Man is still my backup and for when I want that specific sound) but I do agree they have a distinct sound, and are still one of my favourites basses as well
Awesome 🤘
Whooooaa since when did you start talking in videos? That's an interesting development. Nice to hear you're a fellow Brit as well! I always assumed you were American because it's an American genre lol
Haha yeah I think most people assume that. And I've been doing it sporadically for the past few uploads. It won't be on every, but I do plan on doing more of it for future videos.
My bass player in Limitpoint had a nice blue burst stingray with a black pickgaurd. Sounded so good with his style of playing.
🤘
Proud for calling the bass from the thumbnail and Fugazi from the first bass note! ✌💗🤘
Nice one!
I'm more surprised that Blink 192, MXPX, and such are considered "classic punk" now
I said "pop punk" tbf.
I love this bass, I also love the Pete Wentz signature edition as well, can’t wait to get one as my first stingray
Awesome, good luck with it!
I got the PW signature in fiesta red and love it
I once went to a guitar store to buy a bass for my productions, tried out all the basses in the cheaper price range, I ended up with a vintage p-bass with sounded so much better than all the others IMO. Also I think using to many midi instruments makes mixes sound non human, but thats also a matter of taste I guess. I spend hours on programming drums to make them sound as realistic as possible.
I agree to an extent, but I think the way bass is processed for a lot of pop punk and metal mixes doesn't make "real" bass tracks sound realistic anyway. So I've always found they slot in nicely whenever I'm working on a production - and even better if you double it up with the real thing.
@@SugarpillProd doubling basses? Wouldn't this create some phase issues/ chorus effects?
@@joa1232 It can, but I've never had a problem with it personally. As long as you play tight with the MIDI bass, then it usually works out fine. You can always flip the phase if you do encounter issues as well. Sometimes I'll use the real track for the tone, and then the MIDI for the DI.
HELLO FELLOW REASON USER!!!! Always so cool to see people in the wild using Reason, haha
Haha yeah I feel like it's fairly uncommon for the styles of music I tend to make. Still though, it's a great DAW!
Not enough jazz basses in punk.
Jazz bass with a pick and a bit of drive will give you a narly punk sound! I swap between that and my P bass pretty evenly.
@@PhoenixDawn93 Same! Picked Jazz bass, fresh strings always. GK gear with some Darkglass in front of it. I'm getting pretty snarly in here.
Man I should have looked at the run time. Well played sir, I watched an ad to watch an ad. You didn't click the contain paid promotion check box. Very naughty.
Yes I did lol.
Own the “must have” Basses. Played the Jazz for years, since it’s most comfy. Than bought a P, never get real happy with it. Than a stingray. Played and toured with it for like 4 years. Got back to the jazz… now I’m discovering the P again. Seems to had a horrible setup which didn’t fit me. Now I finally understand why the P is so commonly used. :D
Nice. Yeah I think I had a similar issue with the setup on my p-bass too. They seem to set the action way higher than I'd ever want it. But once I changed that it plays really well. Though I still like the feel more on my Ray34.
Oh what the heck hes talking
Bit late on that, I have been for the past few videos haha.
Yeah I noticed that
But damn they're expensive
Haha that is the one downside. Even worse if you're a Dingwall fan 😂
Nice ad 👍
Idk why it never once occurred to me this guy could be British
Don't worry, I think most people assume I'm American, just based on the music I cover haha.
If the two finger GOATs use it - Bri Robinson and Karl Alvarez - that's worth it
Haha very true!
im gonna guess its a stingray 🫢
Gold star for you⭐
Enema of the state was recorded entirely with a precision bass. Mark hoppus was using the stingray only in early blink 182 debut til dude ranch album.
No, part of it was recorded on a Stingray. Mark and Jerry only bought a precision bass midway through the recording process. The bass part I show is actually Mark's bass track, and it's very clearly not the sound of a precision bass.
Oh and Dude Ranch actually isn't a Stingray either. It's some weird bass that Trombino had laying about in the studio - can't remember what the exact model was now, but I think I put it in my Dammit breakdown video, in case you're curious.
Enema was recorded with three known basses, a P bass (Petey), a Stingray and a Jazz Bass, however the later is the only one that it is harder to hear in the record compared to the P bass or the Stingray, some songs have parts with one and others with the other, Mutt for example is the most evident song that it is a Stingray along with Wendy Clear, Dumpweed, Don't Leave Me, Party Song and Adam Song
The reason it is a little bit harder to hear comes down to the production, there are so many guitars tracked compared to the bass that the P bass cuts better than the Stingray, but saying that the Stingray wasn't used it is just false when you can clearly hear it in some songs
Yeah exactly. Stingray's have a very unique sound, and it's quite clear there are multiple tracks on that record that use one. Especially if you compare parts that are obviously the precision bass (like the opening of WMAA) to the bass in The Party Song.
@@SugarpillProdFor Dude Ranch. It was an Ibanez bass! ….I know…
i mean this is cool but its just an ad for a vst
Correction, a "cool" ad for a vst 😉
@@SugarpillProd i can admit tho, i like the ad and cool product
He's english!! Whaaaaat? Noice!!
Correct gov'nor!
@@SugarpillProdguessing you’re down south mate? Daft geordie ears couldn’t quite place the accent! 😂
@@PhoenixDawn93 Haha! Nah I'm more towards the east of England, around Norfolk.
Pete Wentz signature dropped 🎸
✌️
Are you sure that enema was recorded with a stingray?
Yeah I believe Enema is about half and half with a Stingray and a Precision bass. I think Mark said he got "Pete" - the sunburst p-bass, similar to the one I play in the video - around the middle portion of the recording process. So some songs like What's My Age Again & All The Small Things are played on the p-bass, and others like Party Song & Wendy Clear are on the Stingray.
Stingray: Dumpweed, Don't leave me, The party song, Mutt. I am pretty sure. Wendy clear sounds like Fender Jazz. Who knows. It doesn't sound like Stingray or P-bass.
Ok thanks guys 👍
this just turned into an ad very quickly:(
But a great one at that 😁😂
Where are you from ? Your accent is not usual
Lol thanks? The UK.
@@SugarpillProd just fyi average English learner comes out of school thinking all Brits speak like Theresa May because it's the only accent used in listening excercises in the textbooks
Yeah I kinda got that impression too 🤣
