I keep coming back to what you said here. True. You made a very insightful observation. I read what you wrote a week ago, and it’s been buzzing in my skull since. Thanks.
Guys, no need to diss or hate on Katy Perry. She made a song that Brian liked and wanted to cover. Besides, Brian has said many times that he doesn't like it when his fans diss other genres or musicians. Just focus on what you like.

It's funny sometimes when you hear other artists cover what was originally a fluffy pop song and then you realize that our preconceptions sometimes inhibit our ability to see how good the song writting sometimes is in those fluffy pop songs. Real music fans can acknowledge this. Pretentious music snobs will simply sit back and hate on the original claiming this is what true music sounds like while never acknowledging the fact the song originated elsewhere and without it this version would ever exist. You can see the two types of people in the comment sections.
he's said in interviews years back that he does ghostwriting to pay the bills. I have a secret warm theory that the pop songs he covers are ones he wrote :)
I come back to this video all the time. Whether I'm sad or happy, Brian Fallon singing Teenage Dream Is the motivation I need. I thought I commented on this years ago but alas I did not. Have seen this vid (as well as the whole Troubadour show) many times. Unexpectedly haunting.
Okay, I actually like this song when Katy Perry does it, but. Wow. This is AMAZING. A friend recommended and I'm in awe. Complete and utter awe. This may have gone from being a "hey, I don't mind this song" song, to a "favorite song ever" song.
I love Katy Perry, I think she has a fantastic voice and generally I'm a big fan of her music. But this is just on a whole different level, Brian Fallon brings so much emotion to every song he performs and the arrangement is very clever. His generations answer to Tom Waits.
This is proof that amazing song writing is great, just because it is or is not played on top 40 radio shouldn't matter. You can always make great songs sell or make a great song rock. Good for you Brian Fallon for playing this the way it should of been from the start
Tom Waits ups Katy Perry and she puts her makeup on, "is that better?" "NO, growl, I said without your makeup on c'mon you wrote it, here hold my hat for a minute, try it like this...." (a baby is born)
I didn't even know this was a Katy Perry song. Came on my Gaslight station and searched it on here. Goes to show lyrics work in different genres and isn't as shitty as people think.
The downside of this song is that this version gets stuck in your head...then you start humming it...then your friends and coworkers look at you weird for liking Katy Perry
I know this comment has been written 4 years ago... But I actually don't think that brian would sing this song if he thought the lyrics suck and I'm gonna assume that he is more of an expert on that topic than you are my dear friend. not hating though
I sent this cover to my ex yearsss ago and she was like "Why the fuck did you send me a Katy Perry song?" and I was like "... a what song... just appreciate the beauty of Brian Fallon ; ___; " unfortunately she didn't appreciate it.
Nothing against Katy Perry (I do actually like some of her other songs), but the original version by her is awful. This on the other hand, is pure gold.
+Zachary Scott He has done. He said it in a Hoppus On Music interview that he used to write pop songs. Part of why the style to Here Comes My Man is how it is (it was written for TGA). He has the background so he can use that style.
Simple...because hers sounds better ....I think The Gaslight Anthem are a much better fit for me...I love this guy's music...This version is not better ..end of story...He looks constipated trying to sing it...Like he is in desperate need of Pepto Bismo...You satisfied now? ....
ok y'all are just....(insert derogatory remark)...that, that remark over there, wasn't me, but you can fill in the blanks with your own inadequacies...it's music...play it better, then comment negatively..WHAT WHAT!? A challenge, go for it...let me know how it pans out
is that your nickname...or taste in music... if you don't like something, you can turn it off, look up there, (gasp)YOU CAN SKIP IT...or rant and rave...your choice...oh wait you made it...my bad, go on with those bad feelings, they'll get you far in life

Katy Perry's version, the original: being young and in love
Brian's cover: remembering what it was like to be young and in love.
Ouch.
Here here. Well said.
I keep coming back to what you said here. True. You made a very insightful observation.

Here here
This man can make anything sound profound
I'll never get over this cover. God damn Brian Fallon
Guys, no need to diss or hate on Katy Perry. She made a song that Brian liked and wanted to cover.
Besides, Brian has said many times that he doesn't like it when his fans diss other genres or musicians. Just focus on what you like.
you know she doesnt write her own music.
Song writing credits can get weird... Here's what Brian Fallon had to say about it: ruclips.net/video/ojcaTvN1Jrc/видео.htmlm10s
Because he's a nice guy
ALL HAIL BRIAN! WE MUST DO WHATEVER HE SAYS.

+Hallucination So true.
he's said in interviews years back that he does ghostwriting to pay the bills. I have a secret warm theory that the pop songs he covers are ones he wrote :)
+Neil Salter omg!
+Neil Salter unfortunately Brian recently stated in an interview that he didn't write Teenage Dream, I was hoping for that too lol
Hallucination ...your analogy is spot on but i think a less talented artist would never have brought this song to its full potential
My wife and I just had our first dance to this song. Absolutely beautiful!! Brian completely kills it. Thanks man!
Awesome, not many have that special time, God bless
Congratulations bud, wish you both the best in life, great choice for your dance ❤
This man is just perfect I swear.
everytime i hear this song i want to sing : "stay the same dont ever change, cause id miss you...."
Mae
It's the same chords, key and tempo!
Yes. That really landed with me.
What a voice Brian has!!!
I love pretty much everything Brian does
If you listen to the lyrics instead of hating on Katy Perry, you might notice, that they are pretty awesome!
Agreed. This is why Brian covered the song. He thought it was good and his friends wouldn't believe him.
Okay, I actually like this song when Katy Perry does it, but.
Wow.
This is AMAZING. A friend recommended and I'm in awe. Complete and utter awe. This may have gone from being a "hey, I don't mind this song" song, to a "favorite song ever" song.
Einer der besten cover Versionen eines Pop Songs.
The Horrible Crowes is the best thing Brian ever did. How he hasn't revisited this side-project continues to baffle me.
Kinda amazing.
I love Katy Perry, I think she has a fantastic voice and generally I'm a big fan of her music. But this is just on a whole different level, Brian Fallon brings so much emotion to every song he performs and the arrangement is very clever. His generations answer to Tom Waits.
Well put. The Tom Waits reference really landed with me.
I’m obsessed with this song right now. I was born in 1962 👖 ❤️👋🏻 Love this version ☮️✝️💟
Brian Fallon can make an song sound amazing such a great voice.
Why does this make me cry.
He brings that longing beach town vibe to it of running away and it works so perfect.
This hit me hard
most bizarre cover that works so well
Why do you think it's bizarre? The song is similar to Brian Fallon's own songs
At first I thought this was weird even though TGA is my favorite band, but now I can't stop listening to this. Send Help
Wow.. Amazing..!
Oh Brian, you did indeed get my heart racing (and foot tapping). Love the cover, wish to God I could've been there then...
This song was featured on KXCI 91.3 in Tucson
How does he DO this?! That song has certainly never sounded beautiful or meaningful to me until now
Perfection Mr. Fallon... Perfection
Still love it
now that's some Brian Fallon magic!
Listened to this song multiple times on Spotify and just only now realised it was a Katy Perry song. Just goes to show!
It’s Brian it doesn’t what song it is always Awesome and Goosebumps!
I'm hearing a little bit of Tom Waits in him. I also found a whole new appreciation of this song. Well done!
I saw him cover Cold Cold Ground in Atlanta, he's definitely a fan.
This is proof that amazing song writing is great, just because it is or is not played on top 40 radio shouldn't matter. You can always make great songs sell or make a great song rock. Good for you Brian Fallon for playing this the way it should of been from the start
Better than the original by a country mile!!! ❤
Awesome.
Holy shit Brian Fallon makes this seem like a legit ballad. Guess the song itself isn't so passive and mainstream after all.
They should do chasing cars.
The lead guitar part in the intro is lovely
Gênio!
Only Brian can do this...AWESOME
Actually they are the nicest crowes I've ever seen
Simply brilliant!
Love ya ace. Lurp
Good tune good artist
I've heard that he did a cover of Pictures of you but I can't find it. Think he was with the Horrible Crows n it was live
He did. He was singing Ladykiller and it's a quick snippet at the end.
I legitimately think Brian Fallon ghostwrote this song.
Amazing insight. Yes.
Tom Waits meets Katy Perry.
or Bruce Springsteen meets katy perry.
Tom Waits ups Katy Perry and she puts her makeup on, "is that better?" "NO, growl, I said without your makeup on c'mon you wrote it, here hold my hat for a minute, try it like this...."
(a baby is born)
Lookin good Perk
Yes
Still luv it go brian
Excellent. New fan
Just wowwwe its soooo great
Better than original
Brian said once, before playing this song live: You cant keep a good Song down!
Does anyone know the bass and guitar tabs for this? It is so pretty, they definitely made this song better!
I didn't even know this was a Katy Perry song. Came on my Gaslight station and searched it on here. Goes to show lyrics work in different genres and isn't as shitty as people think.
Still great !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go brian
Brian is magic
The downside of this song is that this version gets stuck in your head...then you start humming it...then your friends and coworkers look at you weird for liking Katy Perry
Zen Jon I swear I won't look at a guy weird if I heard him humming to this song. I think it's rather cute :)
😂
He brings like this insane rock soul to it, fucking nice
Hi from Singapore! I hope you'd have a fantastic day =)
how did people not realize this was a cover the first line of the song is 'you think i'm pretty without any makeup on'
Some of Brians songs are written from a womans perspective, "Here comes my man" is one example.
Ben Rejström bro!!! Listen to the words of that song. He's quoting a song. She's finely singing oh sha la la here comes my man"
haha... just listened to that before this. I think i listen to both of those songs at least once a week.
Fucking awesome
Rick from "The Walking Dead" is really good at keyboards
Brian makes even the worst lyrics sound like gold.
+Niko Pappas What's wrong with the lyrics though?
I know this comment has been written 4 years ago... But I actually don't think that brian would sing this song if he thought the lyrics suck and I'm gonna assume that he is more of an expert on that topic than you are my dear friend. not hating though
😍😍😍
I sent this cover to my ex yearsss ago and she was like "Why the fuck did you send me a Katy Perry song?" and I was like "... a what song... just appreciate the beauty of Brian Fallon ; ___; " unfortunately she didn't appreciate it.
her loss pal
yeah i like the katy perry song but this....is perfect
He's basically singing the Katy Perry song while the band plays Mae by the Gaslight Anthem.
Mae-Be! That's an interesting theory!
Playback speed at 1.25x fucking awesome
Everything he touches turns into gold. He even made this terrible song sound good.
who is Katy Perry?
sounds like springsteen having a bit of katy perry haha.
i would love to have a bit of katy perry who wouldn't lol
May 23...... It's Me scam
One of the only people on the planet who can pull off a fedora.
I was there. Great show, but this would have been way better had they just played the original chord progression. It doesn't need any changing.
Only brian fuckin fallon can make a Katy perry song not annoying and Tolerable..
Good songwriting really does transcend genre. Irrespective of how much you may hate Katy Perry; her breasts, and this song rise above it all.
Katy Perry brought me here
Nothing against Katy Perry (I do actually like some of her other songs), but the original version by her is awful. This on the other hand, is pure gold.
Panties were flying at the end of the song.
Erm....how? I swear I used to hate this song
I'd maybe expect a cover song like this from... say... Against Me, but not from Brian Fallon and the Hirrible Crows....
gaslight anthem Mr. Brian, gaslight anthem...
No
at singing the song
convinced he ghostwrites for female pop singers....this....i do not hook up...etc
+Zachary Scott He has done. He said it in a Hoppus On Music interview that he used to write pop songs. Part of why the style to Here Comes My Man is how it is (it was written for TGA). He has the background so he can use that style.
+ReturnDivided I just remembered that. Nice reference man
No.
this.....this is how you polish a turd.
Katie has the way better version. ..This is a completely different song...
Why do you feel like Katy has the "better version" (except because "it's different" or "it's the original". I don't think theses are good reason) ?
Simple...because hers sounds better ....I think The Gaslight Anthem are a much better fit for me...I love this guy's music...This version is not better ..end of story...He looks constipated trying to sing it...Like he is in desperate need of Pepto Bismo...You satisfied now? ....
in a good way as in hes better than her
No irony whatsoever.
His tone doesn't really match the instrumental and the vibe of the song.
you're right. It's better
Ryan Kellar
no it makes it true to the wording, which is the beauty of it all
1,178 tone-deaf people.
Well aren't you just swell, Kent.
Very Horribles..
It's actual music. You wouldn't understand what music is though being a Katy Perry fan.
ok y'all are just....(insert derogatory remark)...that, that remark over there, wasn't me, but you can fill in the blanks with your own inadequacies...it's music...play it better, then comment negatively..WHAT WHAT!? A challenge, go for it...let me know how it pans out
geez he makes katy perrys song so bad
Lame
