every time you take a picture with your phone camera it adds a digital tag to the picture. that tag tells the date and time a photo was taken, if your gps is turned on the tag will include location data, and what device you used to take the photo. the tag data varies depending on phone models.

appreciate your vids Becky and your honesty :D... calibration is basically comparing a 'unknown' value to a known value.. if the program knows the dots are .25" apart it can interpolate/calculate the points/nodes between in order to follow and cut a path.. also.. since the machine uses a optical sensor , it uses its own light to detect the location of the registration mark, by 'adding' lights to the process is making it harder for the machine to differentiate between the black mark and white paper.. its flooding the sensor, effectively blinding it : ), try going in the opposite direction, I mean shut ALL the the lights in the room OFF , at least until the registration is made.. we started with a 'maker ' and are looking forward to a cameo system.. the Studio tools/Business edition has ALL the right stuff

Thank you for the video, I am sorry you went thru “the nightmare” but happy you shared it. I got my Cameo 4 before Mother’s Day and went thru the same thing with the Print & Cut. With Covid-19 I didn’t get answer back from Silhouette Support for weeks and weeks. Not my experience in the past. Everything they asked me to do didn’t work. Finally I just barrowed back my Cameo 3 from my daughter to finish all my Print & Cut projects. Its probably time to test it out again since there have bee a couple of updates, but like you who wants to battle all that? Thank you so much!!! I am not alone

I've gone through hell trying to get my pixscan mat calibrated. Like, I've had it for over a year, I've tried to calibrate it easily 10 times and still am no closer to being able to use it than I was the day I got it.
Also, calibration is basically teaching the machine what is where, so that it knows where to cut. And the machine knew what phone you have because when our phones take photos, they include information about the photo- where it was taken, when it was taken, what device took it, etc. 😁
I haven't tried using this video. I hope it helps...

I had a very similar experience with print & cut using printable htv. It was hit or miss when it read the registration marks. Tried all I could, updated sw, added light, tried the manual set. Nothing worked consistently. Eventually I got everything I needed cut! But not ready to give it another try real soon.

I would recommend trying without shiny vinyl near the corners. I know this is an older video but when you think of how the light reflects and the laser scans, holographic vinyl especially could cause reflections that could cause the scan to fail.

The holographic vinyl may have interfered with your scan. It probably reflected back at the camera and you got an error message. Try replacing it with just a color card stock as a place holder for you scan and then put the vinyl back for your Final Cut.

one other issue i had was the mat loading to far into the machine so far so that the mat was no longer in contact with the wheels. Can you do a tutorial using the PicScan mat on a Cameo 3, cutting a simple design off of a sheet of printable vinyl? I don’t have a sublimation set up yet and printable vinyl is a good option for multi color designs. You are so patient! That project was quite involved. Thank you. P.S. The newest version software has an unusual PicScan set up , so I reverted back to my previous version that looks more like what you are using.

I've been fighting with my PixScan for months... get frustrated and stop... But today decided again I would make it work. It just seemed to me that the mat itself was too short, it would never read the bottom registration mark and just push the mat out the back. I took on old regular standard 12x12 mat and cut it up and used packing tape and added 3 inches to the bottom of my PixScan mat... and guess what!!! it now reads all registration marks and cuts perfectly!! I received a Cameo 4 for Christmas and have been working each day since learning the software, hardware, techniques and tricks to create all the projects that can be made with it. I saw this video tonight and the issues you were having with Pixscan mat and had a though. Is it possible the holographic vinyl you had on mat, top right, caused a reflection with the optical eye the machine uses to map the material on the mat? I know from work at a optimized DC that even clear plastic on optical eye can interfere with its ability to read the scan. I do not have a mat yet, but it will be soon.

Just watching this for the first time, that was my immediate thought, the reflection of the holographic paper especially because it's pearlescent. So put dark colors close to the registration marks... and omit all the photographing, transferring information from phone to email to cameo. If it's on mat and image fits inside scrap, then it should work.... yes? New to the cameo world so I'm watching the trouble shooting videos before I do anything! Lol

The reason it knows what phone you have used to take the picture is that the phone embeds the information in the picture file. It will likely also store some or all of the following information as well: Date, Time, Location, image size, F-Stop, Exposure time, ISO Speed, Focal length, Flash, rating, tags. You can see the details in Windows by right clicking on the photo and select "properties", then click on the "Details" tab.

I find the Cameo so frustrating. I got it as a gift and received it passed the return date or I would have returned it. I strongly dislike that you can only communicate with Silhouette through email or chat and only M-F. Because let’s face it most of the time you’re doing crafts on the weekends or at night and they are not open to help you with a problem. I spend more time trying to watch RUclips videos on how to use the darn machine then I spent on actually making a project. I am grateful that I found your RUclips channel because it has been very educational and helpful. Unlike Silhouette. Thank you for your honesty. I get this message: "The selected Calibration Profile is not compatible with the PixScan photograph being imported because it has a different aspect ratio. To provide the most accurate cut line possible, it is recommended to take the photograph using an aspect ratio which matches a Calibration Profile." Any suggestions? I am trying to print out my ephemera then cut it on my Cameo 3 using the PixScan mat. Similar to what a Brother Scan n Cut would do.

Okay, I did everything as you directed. The image is in showing on the mat but there are no cut lines? I tried the trace, it yanked it in made a heck of a racket, spun the mat sideways, paused, then spit it back out saying couldn't find the registration marks!!!! HELP as I bought files to use this stupid mat on.

    • @LaynieFingers

Your machine will save the calibration for your camera (your phone, your tablet, an actual camera, whatever), and you will need a separate calibration for each camera you use. That tells your machine basically how your camera works.
Once you do that, you're done with calibration. However, you will need to take a photo of whatever media you're cutting on the mat, so that your cutter knows where the bits are.
So, for example- I got a piece of junk mail with a cute clock on it. I didn't want to cut out the clock by hand, so I put the card onto the pixscan mat and took a photo of it. Once I pulled the photo into the pixscan setup, I was able to tell the machine where to cut, and it worked perfectly!
      Does that answer your question?

I have tried for over 2 hours taking and retaking, picture after picture, from close up to far away of the calibration page and my sticker images and it keeps telling me either the resolution is too low or to retake it with better lighting (lamp is literally above the page) and making sure grid of dots is within the image (the calibration pics are nothing but dots, so I don't understand what that means). nothing works. how do you increase the resolution? I'm beginning to think this pixscan was a complete waste of money.

When I feed the Pixscan mat it searches for the upper left registration mark, above the actual mark, then goes down a little to find the registration mark then it goes down too far so that the mat isn't below the rollers so it can't move the mat anymore. I don't know why this happens. It's like it's scanning a different size mat. Does anyone know a solution to this? I have the Cameo 4 and software is up-to-date.

Using a scanner is so much easier. You can use your printer scanner. Scan your PixScan mat twice, one on each side and the software sttiches the images together. Trace image as per usual and it will cut very accurately. Using the phone was an absolute nightmare and inaccurate.

I am completely frustrated with the pixscan mat. It wont read the registration marks at all. I have tried everything you tried, with NO success. So i purchased a scanner to scan the image, the software will not recognize the scanner, the driver is not compatible with 64 bit systems. Contacted Silhouette......no response.
