The major thing that helped me was to chew my food until it turned into a liquid before swallowing. This helped close my esophogus where the acid was coming through. I am losing weight and my stomach is shrinking and my brain was still wired to eat large amount of foods and really fast as well. I didn't know how much overeating I was doing until I slowed down and I realized after actually chewing longer that I was getting full very quickly... and before this, I was literally overstuffing myself. Since I've been chewing longer, half my plate is full when I have to stop. Blew my mind.

You are 100 percent right! I notice a huge difference after just starting to slow down and chew down to liquid. I use to eat so fast and not chewing all the way.
Also stress triggers my flare ups big time so stress definitely plays a role

Acid reflux is such a pain psychologically, especially when you are trying to gain muscle mass. It's like your body is violently telling you what to do, what to eat, how to live, etc.

Hi Dr Josh, long story short, I was praying cuz I had really bad heartburn and constipated, while newly diving into a fully raw vegan diet. Getting rid of old junk eating patterns! I thought of ACV and was concerned if it would make it worse. But this video and Braggs website confirmed to get it. I can say, within the first day, heartburn was gone. Within the second day, all constipation was gone. What a Glorious and easy breakthrough! :-) I used two tablespoons Braggs Raw Apple Cider Vinegar in a cup of water 3 times a day, reducing to once in the morning, as symptoms greatly improved. I'm a new subscriber. :-) Hallelujah! God Bless you, for the quick and easy and simple tips!! Shalom! :-)

Acid reflux was keeping me up several nights a week. Prilosec kind of worked as long as I took one every twelve hours, but could always feel the possibility the acid reflux could really flare up. I didn't like the long term side effects of Prilosec and needed a better solution. I found this video, tried it, and by the second day of taking the digestive enzymes and apple cider vinegar I never had a problem again. It's been over two months now. While I don't take the enzymes regularly, I've come to really enjoy the apple cider vinegar on it's own. Since I've started I've never had a flare up or any of the other problems that comes with reflux (bloating, gas, etc). Life is good.

You are 100% spot on but you dont need me to tell you that. My heartburn started with big Rueben sandwiches (high fat) and too much sandwich. The intense, painful burning was so bad I thought i would have to call 9-1-1. Acid reflux was hands down the WORST thing I have ever experienced. I am gonna say it again... It was the worst thing I have ever experienced. It lasted about a month and then vanished. I could not go through it again. I researched everything. My doctor put me on acid reducers! Wrong! I eventually found my way to Digestive Enzymes and it changed everything. Smaller portions, chew your food, enzymes, lose weight. I dont know if there are different pain levels to acid reflux but my heart goes out to anyone who has the bad one. You cant even describe how bad it is. Listen to this guy. He knows what he is talking about.

I have acid reflux and my chest area is sore as well. When I try to do a deep breath to calm myself, I can feel the soreness very much so. Last year I was told by my doctor I had costochondritis. Which is the feeling I'm getting right now. I also end up stressing at the same time, so it causes my heart to go fast as well sometimes.
This started when I was drinking Tea while standing up. The reason why I was standing was that I was helping out with something at the time at home. All of a sudden I felt a cramp in my left side. After I felt it, I kept breathing deeply to try and relax it. It ended up turning into a sharp pain afterwards. The sharp pain stopped after a while, but I'm still stressed, as I feel sore.

I wonder, do we start to sabotage our stomach acid balance when we start to eat what adults eat? I've seen parents give their 2 year old kid, BBQ, burgers etc, pastries, processed sweet cereal, sugary drinks & salty snacks. Is that the beginning of not having enough acid?

Dr Axe, I want to say THANK YOU A LOT !! I had acid reflux since april, and after visiting a gastroenterologist, she put me on PPI (pantoprazole); I took it around two months, with strict diet ... and nothing, the reflux was still there. searching on the internet, I found your blog where you talk about the danger of PPI's, the importance of diet and THE SUPLEMMENTATION WITH HCL BETAINE & PEPSIN. So, I started reading about that supplement, reading reviews on amazon, and I dedided to buy a bottle. I stopped taking pantoprazole and I started taking HCL Beatine With pepsine... after 4 DAYS the reflux was gone, my body change a lot, I feel with more energy than before. Basically, my stomach acid was low and I had to increance my acid to have a good digestion (something that my doctor didn't check before put me on PPI; I think they almost never check that). I can not believe that a simple pill can change that so incredibly. I really appreciate your information and your time to teach us about healt. Thanks so much! I've had acid reflux for quite some time. Though I didn't know what it was until I decided to go to a throat doctor a few weeks ago. I've gotten sick with the flu at least a couple of times a year, & then it turned into a dry cough. I thought it was just a natural sickness that came several times a year. I'm a music-voice major in college. Therefore, I sing a lot & could barely afford a dry cough. Many people noticed the cough, & were getting worried. They were recommending an ear, nose, & throat doctor, so I agreed. According to the Doctor, the dry cough is from acid reflux. He prescribed me to some medicine & gave me a list of things of what to eat & what to avoid/limit. Since I began taking that into consideration, the cough was getting better. I'm still coughing a little bit, but not like crazy like I was. I'm still taking medicine for it, & I realize it will be a little bit before it's 100% gone, I am patiently working my way there. I also drink a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a small glass of water 10 minutes before each meal. Now that you mentioned it, maybe I will try a tablespoon. Thanks again, & blessings.

Thank you Dr. Axe. I don't suffer from acid reflux during the day, but I've been told I have silent reflux at night, or LPR. I have done most of the lifestyle changes, but still seem to have an issue. I had my gall bladder removed about 15 years ago. Could my reflux be from a lack of bile in digestion, and will digestive enzymes be a good solution? I thought the gall bladder removal was a blessing because before I suffered from heart burn almost everytime I ate. Now it seems only during the night. Thanks.

I would say 99% of the time acid reflux is due to gallstones, tho you dont have any gallbladder. So you most likely have stones blocking in the liver ducts. This is a huge problem that the medical community dont have any treatment for, more then removing the gallbladder. The stomach acid is correlated with issues with the liver and enzymes production. You can look up Andreas moritz for help, or go to curezone homepage "forum" "liver flush".

I can drink coffee again! I had to stop for about 3-4 weeks, but doing the above, plus what I list here, got me back on it (not as much per day now though ;) It may or may not work for you:
-I would add Caprylic Acid to the supplements. It's good for if you have a fungal overgrowth of yeast (sugar and carbs can feed it).
-Calcium citrate and magnesium citrate. I've noticed that caffeine seems to affect the LES it because it causes malabsorptions of these two. I also notice acid reflux as I'm COMING DOWN from my caffeine use. Obviously you can speed up the effects by slowing or stopping your coffee consumption, as well as naturally eating these via some green vegetables. Tums is simply calcium carbonate, but it's good to internally take in calcium as well.
    - Also a weird exercise: Drink a low/zero sugar carbonated drink and do NOT burp for at least 2 minutes. You'll feel your LES (lower esophageal sphincter) tighten when you hold it down. This is the only way I know to manually flex that muscle, which has been worn down from acid reflux and poor nutrient absorption. I felt relief when I did this, but I would say this is something to try and see if it works for you (may not).
Watching this video because I was curious how much it lined up with my process. I've gone through the above process twice, with my last "episode" only lasting a week.
I got everything I needed from amazon (plus a multivitamin, just to be safe):
NOW Caprylic Acid 600 mg,100 Softgels
Digestive Enzymes Plus Prebiotics & Probiotics
NOW Betaine HCl 648 mg,120 Capsules
    Solaray - Calcium Citrate Complex
    Now Foods Magnesium Citrate Veg-capsules
    OPTIMUM NUTRITION Opti-Men
    Good luck!

    1. what about drinking apple cider vinegar when you have ulcers in the esophagus junction due to GERD? i bet this will turn into an erosive esophagus with more acid
    2. what about hiatal hernia causing GERD? if you drink apple cider vinegar, then wont you be flaring things up more by adding to your acids?
    3. what about the PPI drugs becoming widely used and prescribed by doctors, isnt it contrary to take PPIs and at the same time drink apple cider vinegar which is acidic?
    4. last but not least, why do you say in the video that oranges, tomatoes, etc trigger acid reflux while you recommend increasing the acid in the stomach by drinking apple cider vinegar. if oranges and tomatoes trigger reflux because they are acidic, how come some people still recommend to add acid to the stomach by drinking apple cider vinegar?

I had gotten off my PPIs (Prevacid) because they left me deficient in vitamin D, B-complex, and likely magnesium as well (the first two were confirmed by blood work). The reflux rebound was rough. I had changed my diet but highly dense foods like carrots would kill me. Some random guy on FB was going on about vinegar and balancing PH. So I took a swig of balsamic vinegar, which was all I had. It burned hard for a moment and then the relief was significant. Been a vinegar user ever since and picked up some Braggs soon after. .

I had NEVER had pain with my reflux before, but NOW I had acute pain, n/v, almost called 911. ...but I'm lucky a kid in my local health food store 'suggested' maybe I had too little stomach acid vs too much. He offered the Betaine HCL and I readily took it and it worked. and to think I did this to myself - by stopping abruptly - going 'cold turkey'. OMG. Wish I had seen Dr. Joseph Mercola video BEFORE I stopped my PPI.

    3. Walking After food

May this is why I am with this burning after the vinegar? or I do you should i think i have the opposite, excess acid? What can I consider?

What about someone with Barrett's Esophagus or people with a lazy lower esophageal sphincter? Adding acid to a problem stomach doesn't make sense, it's not going to fix their problem. Avoiding the triggers like mint of any kind, chocolate and caffeine are crucial but ultimately, they may need Laparoscopic antireflux surgery.

I have gastritis and esophagitis and I get relief from drinking a lot of water, eating smaller meals and staying away from my known triggers like chocolate, tomatoes, oils and anything sour.
