I think ankle socks and loafers is not girly. Its just how people wear loafers.

I’m 64 and I’ve recently been wearing loafers, socks and a shorter skirt (with tights)! Oversized jacket. I always agree with you, but still wear what I fancy to stay current. I hope I look ok and get compliments!

I’m 64 as well and I’m enjoying wearing all different kinds of styles depending on how I feel when I get up. My nieces have been an influence. One is a soccer playing engineering student and the other is a ballerina attending art school. I love how what they wear is a reflection of their personalities.

At 61 I’m all about wearing whatever I feel like. Couldn’t care less what anyone thinks! I’m loving loafers and socks! Maybe when u hit your 60s you’ll care less too. 😂 I’m same size 4 I’ve been for 45 yrs. So I’m all about wearing anything and everything. I’m obsessed with 60s vibes! I’m all about grunge too! ❤️Love my plaid flannel midi skirt with harness boots! 😎 I started my own RUclips channel a couple months ago. 100,000 views to date! I find that aging and the sense that I’m “unnoticed” has given be a liberal license to take much larger fashion risks than I did in my youth. It seems to communicate a sense of self awareness than doesn’t always come across with a younger person.

Love hearing your opinions. 57 is still considered young. I am going to be turning 68 next month and I am still embracing wearing loafers, but I agree that wearing short skirts and ankle socks will NOT be something I will be styling. I gave up leggings years ago, but I like the English look of wearing them tucked into a riding boot and worn with a wool blazer. I like to stick to a classic look most of the time.

  • @AnneHewitt
    @AnneHewitt 8 дней назад +19

Usually I am in agreement with you, but I think almost all of these trends could be worn well by women 50 and older. I think the key bit of advice you gave was that you have to make some updates and adjustments. It is wet and cold where I live right now and I am wearing chunky chelsea boots and chunky loafers on repeat. I feel that they give my preppy leaning style a little edge. I am also on the lookout for a pair of vintage Frye engineer boots. I think they will add some tension to some of my tweedy-tailored items. Finally, I love some boho touches, especially in the summer. I often wear embroidered tops or tops with a little beading. From a practical standpoint they add interest to my outfits without me needing to add layers or a bunch of jewelry. There are some gorgeous older woman on social media right now who are breaking all of these rules and looking beautiful while at it.

Regarding Boho. We can't all look like Stevie Nicks. I saw her in concert this year and quite frankly, it looked like it took a lot of money and effort or her to pull off. She didn't jsut pop into a thrift store and pull together an outfit. And those tresses couldn't have all been hers still. But we do love her, and her looks. But that's show biz stuff.
I recently stopped dying my hair and decided to grow it out long. It was just too much upkeep. It is very curly and lots of grey. I have a vision in my head that I'd like to appear ertherial and artsy as I enter my 60's. Perhaps like a mermaid witch who reads Tarot cards, grows herbs to make tinctures and paints. However, I know I probably can't pull that off without a full on stylist to help me put outfits together. So I think that incorporating just a few boho peices into my otherwise preppy wardwrobe might be the key. In jewelry perhaps, or some sparkly eyeshadow and a fun boot and vest. Not over the top. I tend towards the monochrome look now, and try to incorporate one statement piece, like a hat, a sparkly leopard boot with a cashmere poncho. It's not quite boho unless I do big hair and a fun statement necklace or something drapey. It seems to only work for evening atire. Not practicle for daytime activities.
However, those of us who are no longer worried about the male gaze or trying to impress a boss., who just want to have fun with fashion, where can we turn for examples? It is harder to pull off the trendy styles as we age . The world is less forgiving of us when we seem to sidestep our "place" in society. The younger trends are aimed at being sexy. And when we copy sexy, we get tagged as "hipsters," trying to attract, or appear cool to the younger generations.
That gives way to the queston,; After a lifetime of responsibilities and pleasing our bosses, husbands, children, once the husbands have gone off with their younger partners, the kids have grown and the workplace has shoved us out the door, shouldn't we be alowed to rebel a little with our style? Can we not start our own trends? Or have we already, and we are simply being overlooked? Rather than copying the youthful trends, I would love to see more examples of older women doing their own styles and showing off our fun and unique personalities. I think some of us incorpoorate things from past decades that we enjoyed the most. The NY/Paris runway might not choose to display the older women's (and mens), styles, but certainly we can be found in the streets of ordinary places. And I'd say that we are due for more representation and our own lane in the fashion world.

Amen sister!!!! I don't want to look like I'm trying to relive my youth, but after all these years (i.e. experience) I think I am a good judge of what works for my body without looking silly. A key I found is to wear one unique piece and all the other pieces with it are classics. That way it looks like a considered choice and not your audition for a walk on role in a remake of the Brady Bunch/The Doors.

I know a lot of women who have always incorporated bits of Boho in their looks. Maybe just a few elements. If they’ve been rocking it a long time, I think it’s GREAT. If someone isn’t confident in it, it kind of goes wrong quickly.

I love shiny and metallic clothes this season, it brings me joy, I make sure to balance as well. I love, love my leopard jacket it looks so good on and is warm, it’s a classic. I grew up in NYC and we are pros at mixing highs and lows. Fashion is about fun, experimentation and coming up with your own personal style. It’s about balance, joy, fun, and most of all expressing yourself through clothes.

    To the negative commenters-
This is a professional stylist’s opinion about what is flattering vs unflattering on older women, not a civil rights or legislative forum. No one is saying you cannot wear whatever you want or look however you want. We all get that there are exceptions and also varying opinions about what is flattering. Please spare us another comment that you will wear whatever you want. Duh. Of course you will.

Boho is timeless and looks great at any age often as a single thoughtfully chosen piece worn with understated other pieces. A great flowy blouse in an ethnic print looks unique and lovely worn with a nice classic pair of jeans for example.

I agree with most except on the Boho. I live in an artsy town and many older women here wear Stevie Nicks style and look great. I’m planning on sewing a Boho style top to pair with jeans because I don’t want the flouncy material to overwhelm my petite frame.

Leonie, I'm amazed that every item you brought up is a no for me also... I remember early on watching an influencer and buying into the chunky boot... I bought two pairs and ended up donating them to the thrift store after a couple of wears... I made that same mistake with a fringe suede jacket, which I donated as well... It’s all about editing and tweaking as we age. We can look current and stylish without looking like we’re playing dress up. We don’t have to give up looking good, but we don’t want to look foolish. Just like with our makeup up, we need to edit and refine as our skin inevitably changes to avoid the overdone mask look. Let’s look chic and stylish over trendy any day. Thanks for the video

I can only speak for myself, but I totally agree that some of this "second time around" dressing is tricky. As I get a bit older, I am careful to keep it classy with more classic style with a sprinkle of trends, the ones that suit me and my personal style. I love elevated athleisure and sneakers, modern jeans and a sophisticated full length wool coat with a cashmere scarf. I stick to three colors or less to keep it all less fussy. I stand with you on these opinions, Leonie!

Leone you are my go-to channel for fashion advice! You make these suggestions in a practical but gentle way :) I just picked up some short metallic silver boots that I will pair down with jeans & a white tee. Also, just picked up a 3/4 length leopard jacket, simple & not over fuzzy- think I could belt it up with a classy leather belt?? Would love to hear your thoughts or suggestions on wearing it! The boho is tricky (I'm in my 50's) but I find single pieces drawn in to a more modern fashion can work if mindful of balance. For example I have a maxi black wrap skirt with a single line of black fringe- paired with a modern white button down & boots looks very put together. Thanks for your videos!

But, specially in summer, I love it to play around with some boho elements, not too esagerated but just some details like a lightely bohemian summer dress or a blouse, I think that can be really chic and it's so much fun when it comes along in contrast with more polished an clean pieces. I love that mixture!

I don't do fringing but big earrings and drapy long kimono style tops over vests and jeans. I'm there for it. Just like my art teacher! 😊 Do you! Fashion is for enjoyment and fun. Don't get bogged down by it. Rules are great if you feel a bit lost and don't know where to start, but just use them as guidlines. Xxx

Super helpful. I tend to dress too young out of laziness. I’m not the best at updating my wardrobe. Now that I’m 50 I wonder if that laziness is making me look like I’m trying too hard or trying to relive my youth. I’d much rather have that outside perspective as guidance on how I may come across when I’m wearing something too short or out of date ❤

I remember my mother telling me that double-breasted jacket are unflattering because often the two top buttons coincide with where your nipples are. It's true and I never forgot it, especially if the buttons are gold, I straight away think of nipples. Double breasted jackets also make you look wider, I've always hated them so good riddance to this trend.

When I was a young woman, living in Seattle, I remember seeing these older women who were really stylish on the hill. They definitely had what you would call a "boho style" but it looked great. In fact, I thought that I would much rather look like these ladies as I got older than I would the more conservative women I am used to seeing. I think there are more boho type styles that look great on older women, such as wraps and ponchos, blouses with lacey cuffs or drapey sweaters. I would consider these all "boho fashion" but I think they look chic and classy on an older woman. Just my opinion...

Stopping by for the first time, honey the clothes shouldn't wear you, you wear the clothes, find your style and go for it, everyone is an expert, smh, life is too short for someone on the internet to tell me what to wear.

Good thoughts on styling... If I do metallic (I'm 53), I'll go neutral... beige, black, silver. Ralph Lauren does a sofisticated boho style that's nice. I admit, I love the 70s, early 80s style, but I try and find pieces inspired by that era. Love me some platform sandals 😆
    Have a merry Christmas 🎄🎄🎄

Sound advice. I think I agreed with everything you said in this video. I love the BoHo look personally, and gravitated toward that in my 30s, 40s but stopped those looks when I turned 50. I’m more conscious, classic, and even conservative now. I think it just suits me better. Not an age thing so much but how I’ve grown as a person especially with work, new location, new hubby etc. ❤ these videos!! Really helpful and thoughtful content. I think our culture is still so impulsive about spending and fashion that I really appreciate more thoughtfulness and deliberation behind an image that we put out there.

Hi Leoni, I’ve been following u for years! I L ove this video Leoni! I’m 46 & I feel your right! I find so many stylish young ladies on here that have such great style but sometimes I think they look great on younger women but on us it makes us look older! For me it’s the classic style! Unless yr going to work, it can age us in my opinion, but like u say everyone should wear what makes them feel good and happy but that’s just my opinion on it! 😊💕😘✨🤩⭐️😍

Good morning Leonie, your trend videos are always fun to watch but it seems you opt in and out of trends very quickly. I'm 58 and petite and although I don't have your experience I think I'm quite good at spotting straight away if a trend is going to last and if it's flattering to someone in mid-life (we're not old!) For example this year I invested in a few suede jackets, bags and boots, one of the suede jackets is the exact copy of the one my Italian grandma wore in the 70s and I know I will treasure it forever (£229 from Zara, they've sold out of the brown one I bought but they've just brought it out in chic black). What I did not invest in was suede jackets with fringes, embossed logos, too boxy ones, etc.
Another trend that's popular this year but that I think will go out of style very quickly is those enormous, thick, colourful (plaid) scarves, they just swamp you and are so unflattering, I prefer a faux fur scarf like Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy wore on her wool coat. I never liked any of the trends you featured in this video, and I could spot they looked cheap from the start, for example bright coloured teddy coats and shearling jackets, they just look too young, buy a dark-coloured not too voluminous faux fur coat instead to look timeless, chic and luxurious.
I was never 100% convinced that wide leg jeans were good for me as I'm very petite. Eventually I bought a cheap pair from H&M. As predicted they make me look wider and they encourage overeating as they're a bit too good at disguising a bulging tummy so I suspect that after this season they're going to end up in a charity shop and it's back to my straight and bootcut jeans.

I'm 58, and if I've learned anything as I get older, it's that I am the only one who gets to tell me what I can wear, how I style My hair, & how I live.
My hair reaches my butt, my front strands are bleached so I can paint them pink, turquoise or whatever color I like, I wear nose rings, mini skirts and low cut jeans. I'm not trying to be younger (I see myself in the mirror every morning, I know I'm 58) I buy the clothes that attract me (Whether they're trending or not) and live for myself, not for what others/society think/s I should do/be. The more me I am, the healthier I am.

The rest which Leonie shows us in this great video is nothing I can identify with.

Shiny pieces are often intended with a little tongue-in-cheek. This week, make your intentions clear by styling with a red and white Santa hat. This is the week to wear your collection of sequin vests and satin button-ups in the context of last minute shopping, delivering end-of-year-tips, wrapping presents, decorating cookies and come-as-you-are cocktail pop-ups. Or if you're Nordic, glög parties. If you're not into pickled fish and glög, substitute with Irish coffee or hot cocoa and schnapps. Perhaps more important to your sense of personal style is a sense of humor, good humor, generosity, kindness and a twinkle in your eye. ❤️🎄❤️🧑‍🎄

Love the term "fashion time warp" because a lot of these trends mentioned are just not any better the second time around LOL. If I loved them the first time, I would definitely will wear them again like tie-dye or crochet. irregardless of season and whether they are in style or not. Because hey if we are the "invisible" generation then who cares WTF we wear right? And if I hated them the first time, not planning to revisit no matter how many times designers try to resurrect them. Could not pull off boho when I was 17 in the 70s and not gonna try now LOL.

I agree with the other styles but not with Boho. I think with Boho age is not the problem. For any age, I think Boho dresses look best on slim, tall "ballerina" type figures. As a petite senior, I personally would only wear the blouses.

I think at 55, I have finally decided that I am worth the time and effort to choose what expresses who I am. I think anyone who wants to wear a trend or something considered youthful should be free to do so. If you want to present a certain vibe, do it. Your age is irrelevant.

I feel like most of these Trends that you mention are not the most flattering to begin with. And yes, maybe you should wear them carefully, no matter what age, to not look frumpy. But on the other hand, who cares? If Grunge is your style, go for it. If you like the schoolgirl look, embrace it. It's the Person wearing the clothes who needs to feel good in it.❤

I love more of a sleek cleanline monochrome style... I want a look that appears effortless but stylist at the same time... Thank you for your wonderful videos...😊❤😊

I understand your intention but don't agree. Our world now is so casual and most people don't have time to worry about what " goes together". I personally wear what makes me feel happy and usually don't care what others think...which is the gift of getting older. I think the key is to suit yourself when putting an outfit together and use what you have. I play with all of the trends you mention and my style is to avoid looking " classic". I don't care about looking cheap but want to look interesting. As we grow older I think comparing what different aged women wear is out of touch with real style. I think talking about adjusting your style to how you view the world as you age is a better guide.

Softer lines no matter the age. So much better. Lol! I guess I truly do like classy presentation than harder lines & all that exposure. First impressions do count & brush up on your vocabulary. Doesn’t everyone want respect . Fashion can be fun if done with good taste. Shows you have deeper thoughts & presence & intelligence. Let’s clean up girls we don’t have to look cheap no matter what the trend! Make it classy! 🥰

Leonie, your advice is excellent as always, and your Christmas decorations are lovely. I'm 73 and have always had a classic, minimalist style, but I enjoy seeing other women who dress well, including some trends. I won't wear them and still love to see it done well on other women my age. By the way, that tweed coat is beautiful. And - you are not 67. Really?

Boho softens the look and is very feminine which can be desired when you get older. I think it looks very nice at any age, but I would combine it with some modern classic/basic pieces so you don't look a copy from the sixties and stuck in time.
