  • A very powerful surface creation tool that uses an STL.
This is part of the Reverse Engineering tool bar.

Nice!! I have a question. Do you know if realize shape is used in f1? Sometimes I see very complex shapes and I dont know if somonof then can be generated at the primary surface workbench of nx... Regards!!!

Hi Steven, thank you cvery much for your great tutorials. I have a question about the Fit Surface tool:
Is there any possibility to fit one surface to multiple facet regions. I just scanned the upper and lower part of an engine housing from a motorcycle. I want to create a plane through the parting plane between the upper and lower engine housing. Therfore I need to design a plane through multiple faces caused by the connecting faces between upper an lower housing. Thanks a lot!
    I use NX 12 Mach 3

You can't fit a surface in like that. If it is a planar surface you can do random point selection while creating a DATUM. A true plane through 10 points gives you a best fit scenario.
Please let me know what you come up with.

Hi Steven, thanks for your answer. That's the solution I also found in NX. I use in parallel "GOM inspect" there is a function to get any kind of primitives through multiple regions. So I design the major planes/ axes in GOM inspect during postprocessing the scan data. Then I import the scan STL together with the primitives IGES to Siemens NX.

NX has a detect primitives tool that is pretty good. In certain cases it is better to use an inspection tool to get your shapes. I only say that in the context of: the tool is meant specifically for that and you may not have a license in NX. Also because the inspection tool is purpose built it may offer some choices NX will not have.

Hi, Can you tell which scanner did you scan with? Clear edge
