Is he Asian? Normally in many parts of Asia people do not care about safety. Even when they are provided with eye goggles and ear plugs, the workers would not use them. They would only put them on when the safety inspector come to check.

True, experienced craftsman...(not armchair quarterbacks) don't need or use many "safety" options...like guards, googles, etc. that just get in the way, hinder judgement, slow down the job....fast reflexes, fast decisions come from those who work for a living..

I'd also use a face shield & some kind of flak jacket chest protector (if using this machine), cause all it takes, is one bad accident to leave you with a lifetime of regrets. I was a production worker at a sawmill in California for Fibreboard later Louisiana-Pacific. This video can’t be in the U.S. Our saw operator was housed in a high tech booth complete with lasers, HVAC and remote joystick controls. Ridiculous taunting of safety to have worker hand remove slabs. Could easily lose a hand when direction reversed.

Fairly obvious that this mill is not in Calif. This is not about the mill or process, but about the wood, which is world class to many craftsmen and women.
The operator has lost his mind . The number one thing i learned in wood shop was , ask yourself very time you turn on the machine , " where are my hands in relation to the blade "
@@herb601 Easy to say in the comfort of your American office. Much of the world doesn't have access or laws that require personal protective equipment. Like we were in the "good old days" before government safety rules. That's become our culture now, but other places, the owners still see workers as labor, and not their responsibility to protect.
Beautiful slabs. The nail was quite interesting to me. Not that it was in the tree, but at its' location. I wonder how many years growth were around it. I use to live in a small town in southern Colorado many years ago as a kid. ( I am now 64) There was a sawmill there, and my dad once bought a 1x8 from them that actually had a lead bullet in it that had gone through all the processes of milling. We actually cut a foot out of the board to save it. Somehow, somewhere it disappeared. 😢
Bullets in lumber are not that uncommon. We saw them with some regularity when running lumber through the molders at a window factory I use to work at.

The colour of this wood was beautiful. I know that in the UK we laugh about health and safety, but a pair of goggles and some gloves would have really been helpful for this guy.
Gloves, for what? So they can get caught in the saw and drag his arm in? All these safety comments from people who obviously never used this type equipment is ridiculous.
Just thinking about the Walnut sawmill I worked in Kansas City, Kansas. The sawyer sat in a plexiglass enclosure while the blade cut slabs at a very fast rate. Safety was very important. Not so careful in this setup!

But the saw blade really needs to be reswedged and perhaps the guides are a little loose. Too nice of wood to cut sloppy.

My uncle used to be a head Millwright, at the Eburn sawmill in Vancouver. He showed me how to properly sharpen saws using files and stones.
